1. Semi-automatic detection and evaluation of metastases in lymph nodes in diagnostics of the prostate from PET-CT data

Abstract

We present a novel tool designed for the semiautomatic detection and assessment of prostate cancer during recurrence diagnostics using PET-CT with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). The tool automatically generates a structured report, which is enhanced by 3D images and ensures the reproducibility of the findings. Moreover, the area of the findings is automatically determined and can be corrected manually. Image data from 50 patients following radical prostatectomy was used. Our approach and its user interface were qualitatively evaluated by a nuclear medicine specialist. The segmentation analysis revealed a requirement for further automation. The resulting report was deemed highly beneficial, particularly in terms of the resulting reproducibility and the presentation of 3D images depicting the findings. The presented tool has great potential for much-needed support in everyday clinical practice, as it facilitates the communication of the diagnostic results to colleagues and patients and thus prevents misunderstandings.

Abstract

This article explores the differences in the proteome composition of cardiac adipose tissue (cAT) and perigonadal adipose tissue (pAT) using immune-competent adipoids (Ad). The study found that cAT and pAT have distinct phenotypes, with cAT containing multilocular lipid droplets similar to beige adipose tissue and pAT containing monolocular lipid droplets typical of white adipose tissue. Proteomic analysis revealed significant differences in the quantities of key lipid biosynthesis proteins between cAT and pAT, suggesting disparities in fat depot lipid metabolism. These findings have implications for understanding the role of cAT in cardiovascular disease and developing targeted therapies and prevention strategies. [Extracted from the article]

30. Report of three patients with extensive neurocysticercosis in rural southern Tanzania: neurological, serological and neuroradiological findings

Abstract

Background Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is common in eastern Africa, but disease presentation varies considerably. Most patients have single or few NCC-typical lesions in their brain but some present with a large number of lesions. We present three patients with positive antibody-based serology for Taenia solium cysticercosis screened at the Vwawa district hospital, Mbozi district, southern Tanzania, in whom extensive NCC was confirmed by neuroimaging. Case presentations Patient 1 was a 55-year-old female from the tribe Malila smallholder farmer who has had four generalized tonic–clonic epileptic seizures over a period of 11 years and one episode of transient left hemiparesis one year before seizure onset. The patient also reported monthly to weekly episodes of severe, progressive, unilateral headache. The computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain showed 25 NCC lesions of which 15 were in the vesicular stage. Patient 2 was a 30-year-old male from tribe Nyha mechanic who reported monthly episodes of moderate to severe, progressive, bilateral headache, but no epileptic seizures. The CT scan showed 63 NCC lesions of which 50 were in the vesicular stage. Patient 3 was a 54-year-old female from the tribe Malila smallholder farmer who suffered from frequent generalized tonic–clonic epileptic seizures with potential signs of focal seizure onset. She also reported weekly to daily episodes of severe, progressive, unilateral headache. The CT scan showed 29 NCC lesions of which 28 were in the vesicular stage. Conclusions Clinical presentation of NCC with multiple brain lesions varies considerably ranging from few epileptic seizures and severe headache to severe epilepsy with frequent epileptic seizures. Individuals with neurological signs/symptoms that may be due to NCC, based for example on epidemiological criteria or serological evidence of cysticercosis, are recommended to undergo neuroimaging before anthelminthic treatment is considered.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic illustrates the necessity of effective preventive measures for existing and newly emerging pathogens. When confronted with pathogens or spoilage agents, especially if they are not yet well studied, effective hygiene protocols are needed immediately. In the medical field, effective preventive measures are key to prevent vulnerable patients from infections. In production areas, effective hygiene measures are needed to protect goods from spoilage or microbial contamination.The European standardization framework established by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) ensures that effective hygiene measures are available and can be immediately implemented when needed. Based on a broad portfolio of standards/laboratory tests, activity claims specifically addressing the special features of applications of antimicrobial formulations are substantiated. In this review, the concept of using standardized surrogate test organisms is explained, and the European standardized test approach to claim microbicidal and virucidal efficacy, the specificity of claims and their relevance for infection prevention measures is illustrated. Furthermore, relevance of the European Norm test methods is elucidated in the light of legal requirements.Finally, the review explains the systematics of the standardized methodological portfolio of CEN, Technical Committee 216, which is very useful when effective strategies for fighting or preventing microbial and viral induced infections, contaminations or spoilage are needed on an immediate basis. Die SARS-CoV-2-Pandemie verdeutlicht die Notwendigkeit wirksamer Präventionsmaßnahmen für bekannte und neu auftretende Krankheitserreger. Wenn man mit Krankheits- oder Verderbniserregern konfrontiert wird, insbesondere wenn sie noch nicht gut erforscht sind, sind sofort wirksame Hygieneprotokolle erforderlich. Im medizinischen Bereich sind wirksame Präventionsmaßnahmen von entscheidender Bedeutung, um gefährdete Patienten vor Infektionen zu schützen. Ebenso sind in Produktionsbereichen wirksame Hygienemaßnahmen erforderlich, um Waren vor Verderb oder mikrobieller Verunreinigung zu bewahren. Mit Hilfe der vom Europäischen Komitee für Normung (CEN) erarbeiteten Normen im Bereich der Desinfektion und Antisepsis können wirksame Hygienemaßnahmen kurzfristig und bedarfsgerecht etabliert werden. Auf der Grundlage eines breiten Portfolios von Normen/Labortests werden Wirksamkeitsauslobungen begründet, die speziell die Besonderheiten bei der Anwendung mikrobizider Formulierungen im Fokus haben. In der Übersichtsarbeit wird das Konzept der Verwendung standardisierter Surrogat-Testorganismen erläutert und das standardisierte europäische Methodenportfolio zur Auslobung der mikrobiziden und viruzider Wirksamkeit, die Spezifität der Auslobung und ihre Relevanz für Maßnahmen zur Infektionsprävention veranschaulicht sowie die Relevanz der Testmethoden der Europäischen Normen im Hinblick auf die gesetzlichen Anforderungen erläutert.Abschließend wird die Systematik des standardisierten Methodenportfolios des Technischen Komitees 216 des CEN erläutert, das von großem Nutzen ist, wenn wirksame Strategien zur Bekämpfung oder Verhinderung von mikrobiell oder viral bedingten Infektionen, Kontaminationen oder Verderb unmittelbar erforderlich sind.

Abstract

Companies in the textile sector have shown great concern with environmental issues, using raw materials that are produced by systems that are less aggressive to the environment. In this context, naturally coloured cotton (ANC) becomes an alternative to reduce the negative environmental impact, since the products do not need to be bleached or dyed, and is attracting the attention of industries and consumers.In Brazil, naturally coloured cotton (ANC) is mainly produced in Paraíba, where there is a Local Productive Arrangement (APL) for clothing and artifacts made of ANC.In this sense, this study aims to verify whether the interorganizational relationships of this APL have contributed to the arrangement?s formation of value and growth. To achieve the proposed aim, data were collected in the State of Paraiba, in the municipalities of Campina Grande, Juarez Távora, São Bento and João Pessoa through interviews, questionnaire and observation. The data, which was collected and analysed using the Content Analysis methodology, indicated that the APL has important groups that are formed with the purpose of adding value. The group formation was observed in almost all links of the agroindustrial productive chain: processing, certification, acquisition of raw material, production, commercialization and export. In addition, it was possible to conclude that these groups are formed from different perceptions about the market for naturally coloured cotton, resulting in the formation of the value of their products and, consequently, in the growth of the APL. Abstract

Particle properties such as size, shape and composition are key for many products and in many processes. For example, in order to enrich minerals in a targeted manner, an ore must be crushed, classified and sorted so that high grades are achieved with a high recovery at the same time. To describe and optimize the processes, the influence of particle properties on the process result must be determined. X-ray computed tomography (CT) can image large volumes of given particle systems with a sufficiently good resolution to allow for the analysis of individual particles. However, methods to efficiently analyze such image data and model the observed particle properties are still an active field of research. When image data of particles exhibiting a wide range of shapes and sizes is considered, traditional image segmentation methods, such as the classic watershed algorithm, struggle to recognize particles with satisfying accuracy. Therefore, more advanced methods of machine learning can be utilized for such image segmentation tasks to improve the validity of further analyzes. In this talk, experimentally measured three-dimensional CT images of a zinnwaldite-quartz composite material are considered before and after a magnetic separation process is applied to enrich valuable minerals. Therefore, an image segmentation method using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN), specifically an adaptation of the 3D U-net architecture, is used. This has the advantage of requiring less hand-labeling than other machine learning methods, while also being more flexible with the possibility of transfer learning. In addition, a fully parametric vine copula based model is designed to determine multivariate probability distributions of particle size/shape/textural/composititional characteristics—allowing for the estimation and interpretable characterization of highly-dimensional interdependencies of particle characteristics. The described methodology is then applied to characterize the particle systems before and after magnetic separation, to quantitatively evaluate the separation success.

45. Prediction of mineralogical particle composition using CT data and R-vine copulas

Abstract

Computed tomography (CT) can capture volumes large enough to measure a statistical meaningful number of micron-sized particles with a sufficiently good resolution to allow for the analysis of individual particles. However, the development of methods to efficiently investigate such image data and interpretably model the observed particle features is still an active field of research. When image data of particles exhibiting a wide range of shapes and sizes is considered, traditional image segmentation methods, such as the watershed algorithm, struggle to recognize particles with satisfying accuracy. Thus, more advanced methods of machine learning must be utilized for image segmentation to improve the validity of subsequent analyzes. Moreover, CT data does not include information about the mineralogical composition of particles and, therefore, additional SEM-EDS image data must be acquired. Here, micro-CT data of a particle system mostly composed of zinnwaldite-quartz composites is considered. First, an image segmentation method is applied which uses deep convolutional neural networks (CNN), namely a U-net. This has the advantage of requiring less hand-labeling than other machine learning methods, while also being more flexible with the possibility of transfer learning. Then, parameterized models based on vine copulas are designed to determine multivariate probability distributions of descriptor vectors for the size, shape, texture and composition of particles. For model fitting, the segmented three-dimensional CT data and co-registered two-dimensional SEM-EDS data are used. The models are applied to predict the mineralogical composition of particles, solely on the basis of particle descriptors observed in CT data. The power of the introduced prediction models for estimating the mineralogical composition of particles by means of CT-based descriptor vectors, are evaluated with respect to the prediction of the zinnwaldite volume fraction of particles. Results obtained for the goodness of fit and the predictive power are quantitatively assessed.

Abstract

The production of prompt D-0, D+, and D*(+) mesons was measured at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair root S-NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels and their production yields were measured in central (0-10%) and semicentral (30-50%) collisions. The measurement was performed up to a transverse momentum (p(T)) of 36 or 50 GeV/c depending on the D meson species and the centrality interval. For the first time in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC, the yield of D-0 mesons was measured down to p(T) = 0, which allowed a model-independent determination of the p(T)-integrated yield per unit of rapidity (dN/dy). A maximum suppression by a factor 5 and 2.5 was observed with the nuclear modification factor (R-AA) of prompt D mesons at p(T) = 6-8 GeV/c for the 0-10% and 30-50% centrality classes, respectively. The D-meson R-AA is compared with that of charged pions, charged hadrons, and J/psi mesons as well as with theoretical predictions. The analysis of the agreement between the measured R-AA, elliptic (v(2)) and triangular (v(3)) flow, and the model predictions allowed us to constrain the charm spatial diffusion coefficient D-s. Furthermore the comparison of R-AA and v(2) with different implementations of the same models provides an important insight into the role of radiative energy loss as well as charm quark recombination in the hadronisation mechanisms.

Abstract

Recent p(T)-integrated cross-section measurements of the ground-state charm mesons and baryons, D-0, D+, D-s(+), Lambda(+)(c), and Xi(0)(c) are used to evaluate the charm fragmentation fractions and production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5), in pp collisions at root s = 5.02 TeV at the LHC. Abstract

The p(T)-differential production cross sections of prompt D-0, Lambda(c)+, and Sigma(0,++)(c) (2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) in pp collisions at root s. = 13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Sigma(0,++)(c) production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Sigma(0,++)(c) isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Sigma(0,+,++)(c)/D-0 and Lambda(+)(c)/D-0 are calculated in the transverse momentum (p(T)) intervals 2 < p(T) < 12 and 1 < p(T) < 24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e(+)e(-) collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Sigma(c). The feed-down contribution to Lambda(+)(c) production from Sigma(0,+,++)(c) is also reported and is found to be larger than in e(+)e(-) collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Abstract

Background Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is common among people with epilepsy in low-resource settings. Prevalence of NCC and radiological characteristics of patients with NCC vary considerably even within small areas but differences have been poorly characterized so far. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study between August 2018 and April 2020 in three district hospitals in southern Tanzania (Ifisi, Tukuyu and Vwawa). Patients with and without epileptic seizures were included in this study. All patients were tested with a novel antibody-detecting point-of-care test for the diagnosis of Taenia solium cysticercosis. All test positives and a subset of test negatives had a further clinical work-up including medical examination and computed tomography of the brain. NCC was defined according to the Del Brutto criteria. We assessed epidemiological, clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with NCC by presence of epileptic seizures and by serology status. Results In all three district hospitals, more than 30% of all people with epileptic seizures (PWE) had NCC lesions in their brain (38% in Vwawa, 32% in Tukuyu and 31% in Ifisi). Most PWE with NCC had multiple lesions and mostly parenchymal lesions (at least 85%). If patients were serologically positive, they had in the median more lesions than serologically negative patients (15 [interquartile range 8–29] versus 5 [1.8–11]), and only serologically positive patients had active stage lesions. Furthermore, serologically positive PWE had more lesions than serologically positive people without epileptic seizures (10.5 [7–23]), and more often had active lesions. PWE diagnosed with NCC (n = 53) were older, and more commonly had focal onset seizures (68% versus 44%, p = 0.03) and headache episodes (34% versus 14%, p = 0.06), which were also stronger than in PWE without NCC (p = 0.04). Conclusion NCC is common among PWE. A combination of clinical and serological factors could help to establish an algorithm to identify patients potentially suffering from active NCC, who benefit from further clinical investigation including neuroimaging.

Abstract

Understanding the production mechanism of light (anti)nuclei is one of the key challenges of nuclear physics and has important consequences for astrophysics, since it provides an input for indirect dark-matter searches in space. In this paper, the latest results about the production of light (anti)nuclei in pp collisions at root s = 13TeV are presented, focusing on the comparison with the predictions of coalescence and thermal models. For the first time, the coalescence parameters B-2 for deuterons and B-3 for helions are compared with parameter-free theoretical predictions that are directly constrained by the femtoscopic measurement of the source radius in the same event class. A fair description of the data with a Gaussian wave function is observed for both deuteron and helion, supporting the coalescence mechanism for the production of light (anti)nuclei in pp collisions. This method paves the way for future investigations of the internal structure of more complex nuclear clusters, including the hypertriton.
