Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.

Undergraduate research offers academic librarians and archivists an additional motivation to engage students with special collections. Curriculum design, course instruction, and mentoring by librarians and archivists can benefit not only students but also the institution as well. I explore an example of such engagement with a collection of New Jersey sheet music. The project gives students experience producing work with real-world implications. In addition, it increases digital holdings, reduces the backlog of under-cataloged materials, demonstrates the archive's unique value to the institution, and makes new information available to scholars nationally and internationally.

This study examines music library practices regarding School of Music recordings in the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The most significant difference among libraries is between those which accept deposits (a majority) and those which do not (a significant minority). Reasons for not collecting include having an effective system outside the libraries and the amount of labor involved. Arguments in favor of the service include the view of the recordings as a vital part of the university record and world heritage; a pedagogical resource; a key expansion of library services; a source for fundraising; and a demonstration of disciplinary equality. A comparison of two narcocorridos, Los Tigres del Norte's "Contrabando y traicion" (1974) and Alfredo Rios's "El Katch" (2009), highlights both continuity and change in core features of the genre. Whereas Los Tigres del Norte demonstrate a greater degree of restraint, a change of perspective enables Rios to enthusiastically celebrate the illicit lifestyle of the narco-trafficker. The lighthearted musical setting of "El Katch" emphasizes personal autonomy by degrading the sense of the power of death, but a preoccupation with mortality remains, following Rios beyond the song's boundaries into his off-stage reality. The Packard Humanities Institute has released a new edition of Johann Christian Bach's operas and dramatic works, available in both printed and digital formats. The University of Iowa's Rita Benton Music Library has received a grant to digitize and preserve early recordings of Czech music. The RISM Editorial Center is seeking updates to its Series C, the Directory of Music Research Libraries. The Leon Fleisher papers at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University are now open for research, documenting Fleisher's career as a concert pianist and educator.
