Abstract

Owing to its outstanding physical properties, graphene has attracted attention as a promising biosensor material. Field-effect-transistor (FET)-based biosensors are particularly promising because of their high sensitivity that is achieved through the high carrier mobility of graphene. However, graphene-FET biosensors have not yet reached widespread practical applications owing to several problems. In this review, the authors focus on graphene-FET biosensors and discuss their advantages, the challenges to their development, and the solutions to the challenges. The problem of Debye screening, in which the surface charges of the detection target are shielded and undetectable, can be solved by using small-molecule receptors and their deformations and by using enzyme reaction products. To address the complexity of sample components and the detection mechanisms of graphene-FET biosensors, the authors outline measures against nonspecific adsorption and the remaining problems related to the detection mechanism itself. The authors also introduce a solution with which the molecular species that can reach the sensor surfaces are limited. Finally, the authors present multifaceted approaches to the sensor surfaces that provide much information to corroborate the results of electrical measurements. The measures and solutions introduced bring us closer to the practical realization of stable biosensors utilizing the superior characteristics of graphene.

2. Long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation treated by intraoral condylectomy: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract

Abstract Background Noninvasive management by closed reduction is a desirable treatment for temporomandibular joint dislocation. However, reduction of long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation is often difficult. Various conservative treatments have been attempted, but these often render poor outcomes. This article reports the case of long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation that was successfully closed using intraoral condylectomy. Case presentation A 69-year-old Japanese man who sustained an injury in a car collision was unable to close his mouth. Owing to the diagnosis of long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation, intraoral condylectomy was performed. In the case of temporomandibular joint dislocation, it is convenient to reach the condyle from the oral cavity because sufficient opening is maintained. The condyle can be clearly visualized using an approach similar to sagittal split ramus osteotomy, and the operation using surgical instruments can be facilitated by resecting the coronoid process. By separating the surrounding soft tissue and pulling the cut condyle with sufficient visual field, the condyle can be resected while addressing the hemostasis. During the 12-month postoperative follow-up period, no temporomandibular joint dislocation recurred and the occlusion remained stable. Conclusions The limited intraoral incision of this surgical technique provides sufficient access for condylectomy. The results of this case report suggest that condylectomy by intraoral approach could become the treatment of choice for long-standing temporomandibular joint dislocation.

Abstract

Cancer cells utilize epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) during invasion and metastasis. This program has intermediate cell states with retained epithelial and gained mesenchymal features together, referred to as partial EMT. Histone demethylase LSD1 forms a complex with the EMT master transcription factor Snail to modify histone marks and regulate target gene expression. However, little is known about the formation of this complex during the Snail-dependent transition between partial EMT and EMT. Here we visualized the nuclear complex of Snail and LSD1 as foci signals using proximity ligation assay. We demonstrated that the nuclear foci numbers varied with the transition of exogenous Snail-dependent partial EMT to EMT. Furthermore, we found that long exposure to dexamethasone could revert exogenous Snail-dependent EMT to partial EMT. In this reversion, the nuclear foci numbers also returned to previous levels. Therefore, we concluded that Snail might select partial EMT or EMT by altering its association with LSD1.

Abstract Background Various wearable devices for objectively evaluating motor symptoms of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) have been developed. Importantly, previous studies have suggested protective effects of physical activity in PD. However, the relationships between conventional clinical ratings for PD and three-axis accelerometer measures of physical activity (e.g., daily physical activity levels [PAL] or metabolic equivalents of task [METs]) are still unclear, particularly for METs. In the current study, we sought to elucidate these relationships on a daily basis, and to clarify optimal predictors for clinical states on a 30-min basis. Methods Patients who were hospitalized for adjustment of drugs or deep brain stimulation were enrolled. Using waist-worn three-axis accelerometers, PAL and METs parameter data were obtained and compared with UPDRS-3[On] and symptom diary data. We extracted data from the patients’ best and worst days, defined by the best and worst UPDRS-3[On] scores, respectively. Thus, 22 data sets from 11 patients were extracted. We examined the correlations and produced scatter plots to represent the relationships, then investigated which METs parameters and activity patterns were the best predictors for “On” and “dyskinesia”. Abstract

The low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor p75 is a stratified epithelial stem/progenitor marker of human epithelia. We found OM-1, a human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell line, showed distinct cells with p75 cluster, especially located at the center of a growing colony in a monolayer culture. A cell with p75 cluster was surrounded by cytokeratin 14- and cytokeratin 13-expressing cells that settled at the outer margin of the colony. OM-1 cells were also capable of forming tumor spheres in a cell suspension culture, an ability which was attenuated by the inhibition of p75-signaling. Intriguingly, we also found a p75-negative cell population from a growing culture of OM-1 that re-committed to become p75-clustering cells. These results indicated the possibility that SCC with epithelial multi-layering capacity can exploit the p75-dependent stratified epithelial progenitor property for the cancer stemness.

Abstract

Abstract Background Moyamoya vasculopathy (MMV) associated with Graves’ disease (GD) is a rare condition resulting in ischemic stroke accompanied by thyrotoxicity. Radiological findings of vasculitis have been reported in the walls of distal internal carotid arteries (ICAs) in these patients; however, no reports have described in detail the processes of progression of the lesions in the proximal ICA. Moreover, treatments to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke and progression of MMV have not yet been sufficiently elucidated. Case presentation We report a progressive case of MMV associated with GD and review the literature to clarify relationships among recurrence, progression, thyrotoxicity and treatment. Our patient developed cerebral infarction during thyrotoxicity with no obvious stenosis of ICAs. Five months later, transient ischemic attacks recurred with thyrotoxicity. Antiplatelet therapy and intravenous methylprednisolone stopped the attacks. Stenosis of the left ICA from the proximal to distal portion and champagne bottle neck sign (CBN) were found. She declined any surgery. Afterward, gradual progression with mild thyrotoxicity was observed. Eventually, we found smooth, circumferential, concentric wall thickening with diffuse gadolinium enhancement of the left ICA from the proximal to the distal portion on T1-weighted imaging, suggesting vasculitis radiologically. The clinical and radiological similarities to Takayasu arteritis encouraged us to provide treatment as for vasculitis of medium-to-large vessels. In a euthyroid state and after administration of prednisolone and methotrexate, improved flow in the cerebrovascular arteries on magnetic resonance angiography was observed. Based on our review of the literature, all cases with recurrence or progression were treated with anti-thyroid medication (ATM) alone and accompanied by thyrotoxicity. CBN was observed in all previous cases for which images of the proximal ICA were available. Conclusions We report the details of progressive stenosis from a very early stage and radiological findings of vasculitis over the entire ICA in MMV associated with GD. Cerebral infarction can occur with no obvious stenosis of the ICA. We treated the patient as per vasculitis of a medium-to-large vessel. Management of GD by ATM alone seems risky in terms of recurrence. Adequate management of GD and possible vasculitis may be important for preventing recurrence and progression.

Abstract The single-correlator conformal bootstrap is solved numerically for several values of dimension 4 > d > 2 using the available SDPB and Extremal Functional methods. Critical exponents and other conformal data of low-lying states are obtained over the entire range of dimensions with up to four-decimal precision and then compared with several existing results. The conformal dimensions of leading-twist fields are also determined up to high spin, and their d-dependence shows how the conformal states rearrange themselves around d = 2.2 for matching the Virasoro conformal blocks in the d = 2 limit. The decoupling of states at the Ising point is studied for 3 > d > 2 and the vanishing of one structure constant at d = 3 is found to persist till d = 2 where it corresponds to a Virasoro null-vector condition.

Abstract

Early detection of primary bladder cancer (BCa) is vital, because stage and grade have been generally accepted not only as categorical but also as prognostic factors in patients with BCa. The widely accepted screening methods for BCa, cystoscopy and urine cytology, have unsatisfactory diagnostic accuracy, with high rates of false negatives, especially for flat-type BCa with cystoscopy and for low-risk disease with urine cytology. Currently, liquid biopsy has attracted much attention as being compensatory for that limited diagnostic power. In this review, we survey the literature on liquid biopsy for the detection of BCa, focusing on circulating tumor cells (CTCs), urinary cell-free DNA (ucfDNA), and urinary microRNA (umiRNA). In diagnostic terms, CTCs and umiRNA are determined by quantitative analysis, and ucfDNA relies on finding genetic and epigenetic changes. The ideal biomarkers should be highly sensitive in detecting BCa. Currently, CTCs produce an unfavorable result; however, umiRNA and ucfDNA, especially when analyzed using a panel of genes, produce promising results. However, given the small cohort size in most studies, no conclusions can yet be drawn about liquid biopsy’s immediate application to clinical practice. Further large studies to validate the diagnostic value of liquid biopsy for clinical use are mandatory.

Localized treatment has recently become an option for treating oligometastatic prostate cancer. Metastasis-directed therapy (MDT) is a new approach for localized treatment, and many clinical trials are ongoing. In the present case, biochemical recurrence occurred 8 months after a radical prostatectomy for localized prostate cancer, and oligometastases were diagnosed via whole-body magnetic resonance imaging. Metastasis-directed radiotherapy (MDRT) was performed on all oligometastatic sites. After MDRT without androgen deprivation therapy, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decreased to an undetectable level and did not increase for 24 months.

Abstract

Abstract Background Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) and Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) are a group of autoimmune neurological disorders (GBS spectrum disorder) that rarely recur. Recently, anti-ganglioside complex antibodies (GSC-Abs) were identified in patients with GBS spectrum disorder. However, there has been no case report describing GSC-Abs profiles in a recurrent case showing different phenotypes. Case presentation We report the case of a 33-year-old male patient with GQ1b-seronegative BBE-GBS after two prior episodes of MFS-GBS. Our patient showed ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, areflexia and a weakness of the extremities (MFS and GBS symptoms) in all episodes. In the episode reported here, our patient showed disturbed consciousness and an extensor response to cutaneous plantar stimulation was observed (BBE symptoms), with severe disability and requirement for artificial respiration management. GSC-Abs detected in previous episodes were also detected in the subsequent episodes, while new GSC-Abs emerged in each episode. Interestingly, whereas antibodies to GA1/GQ1b and GA1/GT1a, which are commonly identified in patients with GBS, MFS or BBE, appeared in all episodes, antibodies to GD1a/GD1b and GD1b/GT1b, which are predominantly associated with severe disability and the requirement for artificial respiration management in GBS, emerged for the first time in this episode. Conclusion This study reports novel phenomena about the GSC-Abs profiles and its relationship with clinical features in a case with recurrent GBS spectrum disorder, showing different phenotypes in different episodes. Further studies are required to reveal the significance of the GSC-Abs profiles in recurrent GBS spectrum disorder.

Abstract

In order to determine broad ranges of particle size distribution, a new measuring method combined both light scattering and electrostatic separation-condensation nuclei is experimentally investigated. From the experiments, it is confirmed that by using a sensitive optical particle counter connected to a digital computer system, the particle size range of 10 nm to 10 µm in diameter is adequately measurable. Furthermore, using the same criteria to count the number of particles over the entire size range, this method is found to be remarkably applicable as a practical means of more accurate measurement.† This report was originally printed in J. 14. Giant Dirac point shift of graphene phototransistors by doped silicon substrate current

Abstract

Graphene is a promising new material for photodetectors due to its excellent optical properties and high-speed response. However, graphene-based phototransistors have low responsivity due to the weak light absorption of graphene. We have observed a giant Dirac point shift upon white light illumination in graphene-based phototransistors with n-doped Si substrates, but not those with p-doped substrates. The source-drain current and substrate current were investigated with and without illumination for both p-type and n-type Si substrates. The decay time of the drain-source current indicates that the Si substrate, SiO2 layer, and metal electrode comprise a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor due to the presence of defects at the interface between the Si substrate and SiO2 layer. The difference in the diffusion time of the intrinsic major carriers (electrons) and the photogenerated electron-hole pairs to the depletion layer delays the application of the gate voltage to the graphene channel. Therefore, the giant Dirac point shift is attributed to the n-type Si substrate current. This phenomenon can be exploited to realize high-performance graphene-based phototransistors.

Abstract

Irregular menstrual cycles, reduced responses to exogenous hormonal treatments, and altered endocrine profiles (high FSH/high LH/low AMH) are observed in women with increasing age before menopause. In this study, because the granulosa cell-specific Nrg1 knockout mice (gcNrg1KO) presented ovarian and endocrine phenotypes similar to older women, we sought to understand the mechanisms of ovarian aging and to develop anewstrategy for improving fertility in older women prior to menopause. In the ovary of 6-month-old gcNrg1KO mice, follicular development was blocked in bilayer secondary follicles and heterogeneous cells accumulated in ovarian stroma. The heterogeneous cells in ovarian stroma were distinguished as two different types: (i) the LH receptor-positive endocrine cells and (ii) actin-rich fibrotic cells expressing collagen. Both the endocrine and fibrotic cells disappeared following long-term treatment with a GnRH antagonist, indicating that the high levels of serum LH induced the survival of both cell types and the abnormal endocrine profile to reduce fertility. Moreover, follicular development to the antral stages was observed with reduced LH and the disappearance of the abnormal stromal cells. Mice treated with the GnRH antagonist regained normal, recurrent estrous cycles and continuously delivered pups for at least for 3 months. We conclude that endocrine and matrix alternations occur within the ovarian stroma with increasing age and that abolishing these alternations resets the cyclical release of LH. Abstract

Background Moyamoya vasculopathy (MMV) associated with Graves’ disease (GD) is a rare condition resulting in ischemic stroke accompanied by thyrotoxicity. Radiological findings of vasculitis have been reported in the walls of distal internal carotid arteries (ICAs) in these patients; however, no reports have described in detail the processes of progression of the lesions in the proximal ICA. Moreover, treatments to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke and progression of MMV have not yet been sufficiently elucidated. Case presentation We report a progressive case of MMV associated with GD and review the literature to clarify relationships among recurrence, progression, thyrotoxicity and treatment. Our patient developed cerebral infarction during thyrotoxicity with no obvious stenosis of ICAs. Five months later, transient ischemic attacks recurred with thyrotoxicity. Antiplatelet therapy and intravenous methylprednisolone stopped the attacks. Stenosis of the left ICA from the proximal to distal portion and champagne bottle neck sign (CBN) were found. She declined any surgery. Afterward, gradual progression with mild thyrotoxicity was observed. Eventually, we found smooth, circumferential, concentric wall thickening with diffuse gadolinium enhancement of the left ICA from the proximal to the distal portion on T1-weighted imaging, suggesting vasculitis radiologically. The clinical and radiological similarities to Takayasu arteritis encouraged us to provide treatment as for vasculitis of medium-to-large vessels. In a euthyroid state and after administration of prednisolone and methotrexate, improved flow in the cerebrovascular arteries on magnetic resonance angiography was observed. Based on our review of the literature, all cases with recurrence or progression were treated with anti-thyroid medication (ATM) alone and accompanied by thyrotoxicity. CBN was observed in all previous cases for which images of the proximal ICA were available. Conclusions We report the details of progressive stenosis from a very early stage and radiological findings of vasculitis over the entire ICA in MMV associated with GD. Cerebral infarction can occur with no obvious stenosis of the ICA. We treated the patient as per vasculitis of a medium-to-large vessel. Management of GD by ATM alone seems risky in terms of recurrence. Adequate management of GD and possible vasculitis may be important for preventing recurrence and progression. Abstract

Background: Patients with minor acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack are at high risk for subsequent stroke, and more potent antiplatelet therapy in the acute setting is needed. However, the potential benefit of more intense antiplatelet therapy must be assessed in relation to the risk for major bleeding. The SOCRATES trial (Acute Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack Treated With Aspirin or Ticagrelor and Patient Outcomes) was the first trial with ticagrelor in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack in which the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor were compared with those of aspirin. The main safety objective was assessment of PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes)–defined major bleeds on treatment, with special focus on intracranial hemorrhage (ICrH). Methods: An independent adjudication committee blinded to study treatment classified bleeds according to the PLATO, TIMI (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction), and GUSTO (Global Use of Strategies to Open Occluded Coronary Arteries) definitions. The definitions of ICrH and major bleeding excluded cerebral microbleeds and asymptomatic hemorrhagic transformations of cerebral infarctions so that the definitions better discriminated important events in the acute stroke population. Results: A total of 13 130 of 13 199 randomized patients received at least 1 dose of study drug and were included in the safety analysis set. PLATO major bleeds occurred in 31 patients (0.5%) on ticagrelor and 38 patients (0.6%) on aspirin (hazard ratio, 0.83; 95% confidence interval, 0.52–1.34). The most common locations of major bleeds were intracranial and gastrointestinal. ICrH was reported in 12 patients (0.2%) on ticagrelor and 18 patients (0.3%) on aspirin. Thirteen of all 30 ICrHs (4 on ticagrelor and 9 on aspirin) were hemorrhagic strokes, and 4 (2 in each group) were symptomatic hemorrhagic transformations of brain infarctions. The ICrHs were spontaneous in 6 and 13, traumatic in 3 and 3, and procedural in 3 and 2 patients on ticagrelor and aspirin, respectively. In total, 9 fatal bleeds occurred on ticagrelor and 4 on aspirin. The composite of ICrH or fatal bleeding included 15 patients on ticagrelor and 18 on aspirin. Independently of bleeding classification, PLATO, TIMI, or GUSTO, the relative difference between treatments for major/severe bleeds was similar. Nonmajor bleeds were more common on ticagrelor. Conclusions: Antiplatelet therapy with ticagrelor in patients with acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack showed a bleeding profile similar to that of aspirin for major bleeds. Abstract

Graphene-based transistors were investigated as simple photodetectors for a broad range of wavelengths. Graphene transistors were prepared using p-doped silicon (Si) substrates with a SiO2 layer, and source and drain electrodes. Monolayer graphene was fabricated by chemical vapor deposition and transferred onto the substrates, and the graphene channel region was then formed. The photoresponse was measured in the broadband wavelength range from the visible, near-infrared (NIR), and mid- to long-wavelength IR (MWIR to LWIR) regions. The photoresponse was enhanced by the photogating induced by the Si substrate at visible wavelengths. Enhancement by the thermal effect of the insulator layer became dominant in the LWIR region, which indicates that the photoresponse of graphene-based transistors can be controlled by the surrounding materials, depending on the operation wavelength. Abstract

We investigate the correspondence between two dimensional topological gauge theories and quantum integrable systems discovered by Moore, Nekrasov, Shatashvili. This correspondence means that the hidden quantum integrable structure exists in the topological gauge theories. We showed the correspondence between the G/G gauged WZW model and the phase model in JHEP 11 (2012) 146 (arXiv:1209.3800). In this paper, we study a one-parameter deformation for this correspondence and show that the G/G gauged WZW model coupled to additional matters corresponds to the q-boson model. Abstract

Graphene is a promising new material for photodetectors due to its excellent optical properties and high-speed response. However, graphene-based phototransistors have low responsivity due to the weak light absorption of graphene. We have observed a giant Dirac point shift upon white light illumination in graphene-based phototransistors with n-doped Si substrates, but not those with p-doped substrates. The source-drain current and substrate current were investigated with and without illumination for both p-type and n-type Si substrates. The decay time of the drain-source current indicates that the Si substrate, SiO2 layer, and metal electrode comprise a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor due to the presence of defects at the interface between the Si substrate and SiO2 layer. The difference in the diffusion time of the intrinsic major carriers (electrons) and the photogenerated electron-hole pairs to the depletion layer delays the application of the gate voltage to the graphene channel. Therefore, the giant Dirac point shift is attributed to the n-type Si substrate current. This phenomenon can be exploited to realize high-performance graphene-based phototransistors.

31. High-responsivity turbostratic stacked graphene photodetectors using enhanced photogating.

Abstract

High-responsivity graphene photodetectors were fabricated using turbostratic stacked graphene, which provided enhanced photogating. Photogating is a promising means of increasing the responsivity of graphene photodetectors, and this effect is proportional to carrier mobility. Turbostratic stacked graphene exhibits higher carrier mobility than conventional monolayer graphene because it has the same band structure as monolayer graphene while preventing scattering by the underlying SiO2 layer. The photoresponse of these devices at a wavelength of 642 nm was approximately twice that obtained for a conventional monolayer graphene photodetector. Abstract

This report describes high-responsivity, long-wavelength infrared graphene photodetectors operating at room temperature, that are based on the photogating effect. Photogating is enhanced by a pyroelectric effect in the lithium niobium oxide (LiNbO3) substrate due to heat generation as a result of radiation absorption by a SiN layer on the substrate. This significantly modulates the back-gate voltage, and increases the photoresponse by a factor of approximately 600. Switching of the charge carrier type in the graphene is observed in response to higher light intensities. The pronounced modulation of the photogating voltage changes the carrier type of graphene. A p–n junction was developed in a graphene transistor by a simple photolithography process used in typical semiconductor processes. The p- and n-type regions were formed by coating photoresist on part of the graphene channel and immersion of the uncovered graphene region in alkali developer, respectively. A 3-fold enhancement of the photocurrent was observed at the maximum field effect mobility. It is therefore important to maximize the field effect mobility by doping to maximize the photocurrent. The acoustic charge transportation induced by surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation in graphene in solution was investigated. The sign of acoustic current (IA) was found to switch when crossing the Dirac point because the major carrier was transitioned from holes to electrons by the change in electrolyte-gate voltage. IA also exhibited a peak value under conditions of both hole and electron conduction. Abstract

The Ising critical exponents $\eta$, $\nu$ and $\omega$ are determined up to one-per-thousand relative error in the whole range of dimensions $3 \le d < 4$, using numerical conformal-bootstrap techniques. A detailed comparison is made with results by the resummed epsilon expansion in varying dimension, the analytic bootstrap, Monte Carlo and non-perturbative renormalization-group methods, finding very good overall agreement. Precise conformal field theory data of scaling dimensions and structure constants are obtained as functions of dimension, improving on earlier findings, and providing benchmarks in $3 \le d < 4$.
