Abstract

Light-harvesting complexes in natural photosynthetic systems, such as those in purple bacteria, consist of photo-reactive chromophores embedded in densely packed “antenna” systems organized in well-defined nanostructures. In the case of purple bacteria, the chromophore antennas are composed of natural J-aggregates such as bacteriochlorophylls and carotenoids. Inspired by the molecular composition of such biological systems, we create a library of organic materials composed of densely packed J-aggregates in a polymeric matrix, in which the matrix mimics the optical role of a protein scaffold. This library of organic materials shows polaritonic properties which can be tuned from the visible to the infrared by choice of the model molecule. Inspired by the molecular architecture of the light-harvesting complexes of Rhodospirillum molischianum bacteria, we study the light–matter interactions of J-aggregate-based nanorings with similar dimensions to the analogous natural nanoscale architectures. Electromagnetic simulations show that these nanorings of J-aggregates can act as resonators, with subwavelength confinement of light while concentrating the electric field in specific regions. These results open the door to bio-inspired building blocks for metamaterials from visible to infrared in an all-organic platform, while offering a new perspective on light–matter interactions at the nanoscale in densely packed organic matter in biological organisms including photosynthetic organelles.

Abstract

Due to the exponential increase in energy consumption and CO2 emissions, new sustainable energy sources have emerged, and hydrogen (H2) is one of them. Despite all the advantages, H2 has high flammability, so constant monitoring is essential. Two optical techniques were numerically studied and compared with the goal of H2 sensing: surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPP). The H2-sensitive material used was palladium (Pd) in both techniques. The SPP structure was found to have more sensitivity to H2 than TPP, 23 and 5nm/4vol% H2, respectively. However, the latter has lower FWHM, with the minimum of the band showing reflectivity near 0%. In addition, TPP also uses more costeffective materials and can be interrogated at normal incidence with depolarized light. The potential of using each of these optical techniques for H2 sensing was demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Optical Tamm states (OTS) are confined optical modes that can occur at the interface between two highly reflective structures. However, due to the strong reflectance required, their implementation with highly processable and metal-free flexible materials has proven challenging. Herein, we develop the first structure supporting OTS based only on organic polymeric materials, demonstrating a photonic platform based on non-critical, widely available and easily processable materials. The structures fabricated present large areas and consist of a narrowband multi-layered polymeric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) followed by a thin film of J-aggregate molecular excitonic material that can act as a highly reflective surface within a narrowband range. We take advantage of the narrowband spectral response of the DBR and of the reflective molecular layer to tune the OTS band by varying the periodicity of the multilayer, opening the door for the fabrication of OTS structures based on lightweight integrable excitonic devices with cost-effective procedures.

43. Pushing the Limits of Lateral Flow Immunoassay by Digital SERS for the Ultralow Detection of SARS‐CoV‐2 Virus.

Abstract

Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) are easy‐to‐use antigen tests that provide different signal readouts, with colorimetric readouts being the most commonly used. However, these analytical devices have relatively low sensitivity and produce semiquantitative results, limiting their diagnostic applications. Herein, we address these challenges by implementing a digital surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)‐based LFIA for the accurate and ultrasensitive quantitative detection of SARS‐CoV‐2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. Compared with average SERS intensity measurements, the digital approach allowed to overcome fluctuations in Raman scattering signals, thereby increasing the analytical sensitivity of the assay. Our method exhibited a quantification range of the viral protein in nasal swabs from 0.001 to 10 pg mL−1, and a limit of detection down to 1.9 aM (0.9 fg mL−1), improving colorimetric LFIAs and conventional‐SERS‐based LFIAs by several orders of magnitude. Importantly, this approach shows an analytical sensitivity of 0.03 TCID50 mL−1, which is greater than that reported by other immunoassays. In conclusion, we successfully demonstrate the robust detection and quantification of SARS‐CoV‐2N protein in nasal swabs at ultralow concentrations. The improvement in the sensitivity of LFIA by digital SERS may pave the way to translate this technology into the diagnostic arena for the ultrasensitive detection of microbes and disease biomarkers. 45. Pollinator-mediated selection on Krameria oil flowers: a flower–pollinator fit adaptation to an atypical oil-collecting behaviour?

Abstract

Background and Aims Spatial variation in plant–pollinator interactions is a key driver of floral trait diversification. A so far overlooked qualitative aspect of this variation is the behavioural component on flowers that relates to the pollinator fit. We tested the hypothesis that variation in pollinator behaviour influences the geographical pattern of phenotypic selection across the distribution range of the oil-producing Krameria grandiflora (Krameriaceae). This variation mainly involves the presence or absence of flag petal grasping, which is only performed by representatives of Centris (Centridini, Apidae), an oil-collecting bee group highly associated with Krameriaceae pollination. Methods We quantified variation in floral traits and fitness and estimated pollinator-mediated selection in five populations at a large geographical scale comprising the entire species range. In each population, we sampled individual pollen arrival and germination as a fitness measure, indicating pollination success and pollination performance, which was then relativized and regressed on standardized flower–pollinator fit (flag–stigma distance), advertisement (sepal length) and reward (oil volume) traits. This generated mean-scaled selection gradients used to calculate geographical selection dispersion. Key Results Unexpectedly, stronger selection was detected on the flower–pollinator fit trait in populations highly associated with the absence of flag petal grasping. Geographical variation in selection was mainly attributed to differential selection on the flag–stigma distance generating a selection mosaic. This may involve influences of a spatial variation in pollinator behaviour as well as composition and morphology. Conclusions Our results show the adaptive significance of the specialized flag petals of Krameria in the absence of the grasping behaviour and highlight the contribution of geographical variation in pollinator behaviour on flowers in driving selection mosaics, with implications for floral evolution, adaptation to pollinator fit and phenotypic diversity in specialized systems.
