It is well established that international students attending higher education institutions in Australia and other parts of the world face challenges that can affect their state of well-being and connectedness. Higher education institutions have attempted to counter these issues by providing specifically designed programs with varying success. This study builds on some of the more successful programs that draw on the relationship between creativity and collaboration. The program aimed to foster international students' well-being by teaching them how to harness their creative potential and explore through stand-up comedy the funny side of life as international students in Australia. The analysis shows that the program positively enhanced well-being by fostering a sense of connectedness and by providing a space to take risks in a safe and supportive fashion. Data also indicated that the program contributed to the development of knowledge and skills transferrable to other academic and non-academic contexts.

Summary: Health, but also personal values and environment, are driving more and more consumers towards sugar, salt, alcohol, fat reduced products and plant-based foods. Yet consumers often do not like these products because of their poor flavor. This creates a need within the food industry to innovate by testing natural sources for novel compounds that show interesting trigeminal or taste effects. Sensory approaches are proposed to screen and assess the performances of compounds eliciting trigeminal sensations as cooling, warm, pungent, tingling, for e.g. Sensory performances of trigeminal compounds are described using different methods. Considering flavor perception as a functional integrated sensory system, these compounds could modulate taste and improve the overall flavor.

Earthquake-induced submarine slope destabilization is known to cause mass wasting and turbidity currents, but the hydrodynamic processes associated with these events remain poorly understood. Instrumental records are rare, and this notably limits our ability to interpret marine paleoseismological sedimentary records. An instrumented frame comprising a pressure recorder and a Doppler recording current meter deployed at the seafloor in the Sea of Marmara Central Basin recorded the consequences of a Mw 5.8 earthquake occurring on 26 September 2019 and of a Mw 4.7 foreshock 2 d before. The smaller event caused sediment resuspension and weak current ( cm s−1) in the water column. The larger event triggered a complex response involving a debris flow and turbidity currents with variable velocities and orientations, which may have resulted from multiple slope failures. A long delay of 10 h is observed between the earthquake and the passing of the strongest turbidity current. The distance traveled by the sediment particles during the event is estimated to have extended over several kilometers, which could account for a local deposit on a sediment fan at the outlet of a canyon (where the instrument was located), but the sedimentation event did not likely cover the whole basin floor. We show that after a moderate earthquake, delayed turbidity current initiation may occur, possibly by ignition of a cloud of resuspended sediment.

The GEOVIDE cruise, a collaborative project within the framework of the international GEOTRACES programme, was conducted along the French-led section in the North Atlantic Ocean (Section GA01), between 15 May and 30 June 2014. In this special issue (https://www.biogeosciences.net/special_issue900.html), results from GEOVIDE, including physical oceanography and trace element and isotope cyclings, are presented among 18 articles. Here, the scientific context, project objectives, and scientific strategy of GEOVIDE are provided, along with an overview of the main results from the articles published in the special issue.

Tasks can vary in terms of difficulty and implementation conditions, and these in turn may affect the nature of the language produced by the learner. There have been a large number of studies which have investigated the effects of these task properties and implementation conditions on the language the learner produces. To date, results have been mixed and much more detailed research is needed before we can conclude about the potential effects of task type on L2 performance. Of particular interest in this study is the need to investigate the effect of high-stakes environments (i.e. testing situations) on task performance, to determine which linguistic phenomena contribute to perceptions of levels of performance. In the research reported here, we compare the performance of two VCE students of French on the conversation section (section 1) of the oral examination. The nature of the language produced by both learners was analysed in terms of accuracy, complexity and fluency. Overall, findings suggest that fluency was favored by both learners although different strategies were used to achieve it. Pedagogical implications of these findings are discussed.

Plasmodium falciparum malaria is usually transmitted by mosquitoes. We report 2 cases in France transmitted by other modes: occupational blood exposure and blood transfusion. Even where malaria is not endemic, it should be considered as a cause of unexplained acute fever.

We took advantage of the ability of human telomeres to silence neighboring genes (telomere position effect or TPE) to design a high-throughput screening assay for drugs altering telomeres. We identified, for the first time, that two dietary flavones, acacetin and chrysin, are able to specifically alleviate TPE in human cells. We further investigated their influence on telomere integrity and showed that both drugs drastically deprotect telomeres against DNA damage response. However, telomere deprotection triggered by shelterin dysfunction does not affect TPE, indicating that acacetin and chrysin target several functions of telomeres. These results show that TPE-based screening assays represent valuable methods to discover new compounds targeting telomeres.

Specific activation of amino acids by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) is essential for maintaining fidelity during protein translation. Here, we present crystal structure of malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (Pf-WRS) catalytic domain (AAD) at 2.6 Å resolution in complex with L-tryptophan. Confocal microscopy-based localization data suggest cytoplasmic residency of this protein. Pf-WRS has an unusual N-terminal extension of AlaX-like domain (AXD) along with linker regions which together seem vital for enzymatic activity and tRNA binding. Pf-WRS is not proteolytically processed in the parasites and therefore AXD likely provides tRNA binding capability rather than editing activity. The N-terminal domain containing AXD and linker region is monomeric and would result in an unusual overall architecture for Pf-WRS where the dimeric catalytic domains have monomeric AXDs on either side. Our PDB-wide comparative analyses of 47 WRS crystal structures also provide new mechanistic insights into this enzyme family in context conserved KMSKS loop conformations.

The authors review the development of the BMS over the past 30 years divided into three decades. The previous analyses of the first and second decades are presented and commented, and then the recent full co-word analysis to all BMS research articles and ongoing research notes is presented and interpreted to provide an overall but detailed portrait of the BMS, its evolution and possible future development. The article discusses strategies towards improving reading comprehension in adult students in a second language (L2) setting, particularly commenting on the need to smooth the transition between introductory language skills development and advanced literature and society studies. It addresses the transfer of first language (L1) reading skills to the L2, context effects, and the formation of student-created reading strategies.

The article focuses on the correspondence and co-word analysis of the articles published in the last ten years of the periodical "Bulletin de Methodologie Sociologique (BMS)." Trideux factorial correspondence analysis and Calliope co-occurrence of key word analysis have been used and applied to the data base of key words. Names of authors who have contributed in this periodical from 1993 to 2003 are also given. Some of the authors are E. Bonnet, E. Dickes, K.N. Hampton, J.J. Hox, A.C. Michalos, G. Nathan, R. Ohly, M. Peterson and others. Development of a new Windows-based program of text analysis was made, based on Leximappe-Lexinet, a method of classification using co-occurrence of key words as a measure of similitude, a method which has been previously used in the BMS. Graphs are also given in the article depicting qualitative data analysis and measurement error, which have weaker external ties.

Dès 2017, la pharmacie et infectiologues ont initié un travail institutionnel relatif aux modalités d'administration des anti-infectieux. Compte tenu des spécificités des patients de réanimation, les réanimateurs et le pharmacien clinicien ont été sollicités. Ce travail s'inscrit en parallèle dans un projet de recherche clinique (étude BLIPIC : dosage des bêtalactamines chez le patient atteint de pneumopathie traité par épuration extra-rénale continue au citrate). Le but de ce travail est donc d'optimiser les modalités d'administration des bêtalactamines afin de satisfaire au mieux les objectifs pharmacocinétiques/pharmacodynamiques tout en limitant l'émergence de résistances, en privilégiant notamment les perfusions prolongées et continues. Un groupe de travail pluridisciplinaire réanimateurs/infectiologues/pharmaciens a été constitué : une large revue de la littérature associée à une analyse des paramètres de stabilité et des dispositifs médicaux requis ont été menées. Les données cliniques et pharmacocinétiques/pharmacodynamiques sont issues de Medline. Un objectif minimal de concentrations résiduelles/à l'équilibre de 4 à 5 fois la concentration minimale inhibitrice a été retenu. Les données concernant les concentrations maximales, les solvants, les excipients et les températures, issues de plusieurs bases de données croisées aux données des résumés de caractéristiques des produits et des laboratoires pharmaceutiques, ont été prises en compte pour la fixation des paramètres de stabilité. Le glucose a été privilégié comme solvant d'administration quand la stabilité le permettait, afin de limiter les troubles ioniques. Le volume de solvant administré au patient et le coût des dispositifs médicaux ont été limités dans la mesure du possible. Des perfusions prolongées de 4 h ont été retenues pour l'amoxicilline, l'imipénem et le méropénème. La pipéracilline–tazobactam, le céfotaxime, la ceftazidime et le cefepime sont administrés en continu. Seul l'amoxicilline–acide clavulanique est administré en bolus intermittents pour des raisons de stabilité. La dose de charge avant chaque perfusion prolongée ou continue a également été protocolisée. Ces modalités ont été validées par le groupe de travail et associées au projet institutionnel présenté en Comité des anti-infectieux. Afin de faciliter l'utilisation de ces protocoles, ces derniers ont été intégrés au logiciel métier de l'hôpital. Une sensibilisation auprès du personnel médical et paramédical a été effectuée (affiche dans les unités). Ce projet est à l'origine d'une optimisation, d'une uniformisation et d'une mise à disposition des protocoles, pour l'infirmier et le médecin, des modalités d'administration des bêtalactamines dans l'infection la plus fréquente de réanimation. Ce travail est poursuivi dans les autres contextes infectieux, en fonction des posologies et cibles de concentrations nécessaires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The effect of the routine use of a stylet during tracheal intubation on first-attempt intubation success is unclear. We hypothesised that the first-attempt intubation success rate would be higher with tracheal tube + stylet than with tracheal tube alone., Methods: In this multicentre randomised controlled trial, conducted in 32 intensive care units, we randomly assigned patients to tracheal tube + stylet or tracheal tube alone (i.e. without stylet). The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with first-attempt intubation success. The secondary outcome was the proportion of patients with complications related to tracheal intubation. Serious adverse events, i.e., traumatic injuries related to tracheal intubation, were evaluated., Results: A total of 999 patients were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis: 501 (50%) to tracheal tube + stylet and 498 (50%) to tracheal tube alone. First-attempt intubation success occurred in 392 patients (78.2%) in the tracheal tube + stylet group and in 356 (71.5%) in the tracheal tube alone group (absolute risk difference, 6.7; 95%CI 1.4-12.1; relative risk, 1.10; 95%CI 1.02-1.18; P = 0.01). A total of 194 patients (38.7%) in the tracheal tube + stylet group had complications related to tracheal intubation, as compared with 200 patients (40.2%) in the tracheal tube alone group (absolute risk difference, - 1.5; 95%CI - 7.5 to 4.6; relative risk, 0.96; 95%CI 0.83-1.12; P = 0.64). The incidence of serious adverse events was 4.0% and 3.6%, respectively (absolute risk difference, 0.4; 95%CI, - 2.0 to 2.8; relative risk, 1.10; 95%CI 0.59-2.06. P = 0.76)., Conclusions: Among critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, using a stylet improves first-attempt intubation success.

Studies exploring the influence of obesity on septic shock remain limited and controversial. Pigs were chosen as a clinically relevant species, resembling to humans in various functions. We hypothesize obesity may impair porcine acute endotoxic shock. Four groups of five "Yucatan" minipigs were studied: lean and obese control groups, lean lipopolysaccharide (LPS) group receiving Escherichia coli endotoxin (LPS) and obese LPS group receiving the same endotoxin dose. We measured hemodynamic and oxygenation parameters, skin microvascular blood flow at rest and during reactive hyperemia, von Willebrand factor, tumor necrosis factor α, and interleukin 6. All measurements were performed at baseline and at 30, 60, 90, 150, and 300 min. Results were given as median with 25th to 75th interquartile range. Control groups remained stable during the study period. In LPS groups, administration of endotoxin resulted in a typical hypokinetic shock. In obese LPS group at 300 min, we observed a significant impairment of cardiac index (1.2 [1.06-1.45] vs. 1.7 [1.57-1.97] L/min per m, P = 0.008) compared with the lean LPS group; moreover, pulmonary hypertension (mean arterial pressure: 42 [39-47] vs. 32 [28-34] mmHg, P = 0.008), hypoxemia (partial pressure of oxygen: 216 [178-262] vs. 325 [285-414] mmHg, P = 0.02), and lactate levels (5.8 [4.2-6.8] vs. 3.9 [2.2-5.5] mmol/L, P = 0.04) were significantly higher compared with the lean LPS group. Throughout the study, rest flow and peak flow during reactive hyperemia were more decreased in the obese LPS group. Compared with the lean LPS group, tumor necrosis factor α levels at 60 min (269 [178-428] vs. 126 [105-166] ng/mL, P = 0.03) and interleukin 6 levels at 300 min (101 [61-142] vs. 52 [36-64] ng/mL, P = 0.03) were significantly higher in the obese LPS group. In our model of endotoxic shock, obese pigs developed a more severe hemodynamic failure with pronounced microcirculatory dysfunction and proinflammatory response.
