Background: Patients’ satisfaction with their treatment directly impacts the control of their diabetes. Quality of life is crucial for patients with diabetes mellitus to maintain long-term health and minimize complications. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of diabetes education on quality of life (QoL) and treatment satisfaction of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: The current study was a randomized controlled trial. Patients with type 2 diabetes who were attending the diabetes clinic for 1 year were recruited. The overall sample in this study was 364 participants; 182 controls 182 cases. The interventional and control group participants were assigned randomly by simple random sampling technique. Controls were managed per usual care while cases were managed per usual care plus education done by the researcher. Pre-structured standardized questionnaires were used to collect the data. Data were processed and analyzed by using SPSS; version 28. Results: More than three-fourth of the participants; 76.4% were females. The average (±SD) age of the cases was 54.5 (±10) years, while was 56 (±9.8) years for controls. The overall median (IQR) years of DM diagnosis for all participants was 8 (4-14) years. Abstract Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major noncommunicable disease worldwide, and its prevalence is rapidly increasing. The Finish score helps in the prediction of the risk of future diabetes development, as well as in the identification of undiagnosed diabetes. The current study was conducted to identify people at risk of developing type II diabetes mellitus in River Nile State, Sudan. Methods: This cross-sectional community-based study was conducted in River Nile state between 2019 October and 2020 March. Data were collected using a questionnaire that included the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score variables from 400 participants after an informed consent. Chi-square test was used to test the associations, with the P-value considered significant when < 0.05. Results: The majority of participants (257 [64.3%]) were < 45 years old, and 229 (57.3%) were male. The risk of type II diabetes mellitus was found to be low in 187 (46.8%) people and high in 213 (53.2%). Moreover, 128 (32%) had a body mass index (BMI) between 25and 30 kg/m2, while 46 (11.5%) had > 30 kg/m2. Waist circumference of < 94 cm was found in 147 (36.8%) males, while only 63 females (15.8%) had a waist circumference < 80 cm. Age, gender, BMI, daily activity, history of hypertension, history of hyperglycemia, and family history of diabetes were all significantly associated with the risk of developing diabetes mellitus (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score was found to be useful in facilitating wider access to the risk of type II diabetes among the study population. More than half of the study population were at risk of developing diabetes mellitus.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a complex condition to manage. Patients with a greater understanding and knowledge of their condition might achieve better glycemic control than others. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of clinical pharmacist-led diabetes education on the knowledge and attitude of individuals with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study which was conducted at a diabetes clinic in Khartoum, Sudan. The study population was adult individuals with T2DM who attended the diabetes clinic. The estimated sample size was 182 participants. The participants were selected randomly by a simple random sampling method. The knowledge and attitudes of the participants were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study after 12 months. The intervention was carried out through educational materials about diabetes and medications for its treatment. Results: The majority of the participants were females. The mean age was 54.5 (±10) years. Most participants had a family history of diabetes (69.2%). The mean knowledge score after the intervention was increased by 1.4 (±0.1) from baseline, p value (p value (p values < 0.001, 0.032, respectively). Conclusions: The knowledge of and attitudes towards diabetes differed significantly as a result of the educational program provided by the clinical pharmacist.

Background: Vaccines are an essential part of public health interventions to mitigate the devastating health and non-health impacts of COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fact that Sudan launched the COVID-19 vaccination program in March 2021, only 10% of the population received their two primary doses of vaccines by the end of May 2022. This delayed uptake of vaccines obviously warrants investigation. Therefore, we have conducted this study to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and acceptance of the general population in Sudan toward COVID-19 vaccines. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional community-based study. The data were collected using an electronic questionnaire from 403 individuals living in Khartoum, Sudan. The data were processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), and data analysis was performed using appropriate tests. Results: 51% of the participants were found to have sufficient knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine, and the knowledge level is higher among those educated beyond the secondary school and those who were employed. Among those unvaccinated, only 47% of the participants expressed their intention to take the vaccine when offered to them. The major reason for not trusting the vaccine is safety concerns expressed by 65.5% of the unvaccinated. Conclusion: Higher education levels and employment were associated with an increase in sufficient knowledge about the vaccine in around half of the participants. However, most of participants had not taken the vaccine at the time of the study, and the trust in vaccines is not high. Effective interventions by the health authorities are needed to address these issues in order to accelerate the COVID-19 vaccination program in Sudan.

Abstract Background: Graft survival post-kidney transplantation is of paramount importance to patients and nephrologists. Nonadherence to immunosuppressive therapy can be associated with deterioration of renal function and graft rejection. This study aimed to evaluate the adherence to immunosuppressive medications in kidney transplant patients at three centers in Khartoum, Sudan. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based survey, 277 post-kidney-transplant patients were recruited. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the SPSS v.23. Our scoring method was calculated based on Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) related to immunosuppressive medications and was expressed as questions in the questionnaire; every correct answer was given one mark, then the marks were gathered and their summation was expressed. Results: Overall,33%,45%, and 22% of the studied participants reported high, medium, and low adherence, respectively. The major factor for nonadherence was forgetfulness affecting 36.1% of those who did not adhere. The cost of the immunosuppressive medications did not negatively affect any of the participants' adherence (100%). However, a significant association was seen between adherence and occupational status, duration of transplantation, shortage of immunosuppressants, recognizing the name of immunosuppressant, side effect, and forgetfulness (P-values = 0.002, 0.01, 0.006, 0.000, 0.022, and 0.000, respectively). Logistic regression analysis showed a significant association with occupational status, side effects, and forgetfulness. Conclusion: Only one-third of the participants were classed as “highly adherent” to their immunosuppressant medications. Factors that can affect adherence to immunosuppressant medications were occupational status, side effects, and forgetfulness.

Abstract Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder and cause of infertility in women of reproductive age. Knowledge of females about health problems is considered an important factor that promotes females' health-seeking behavior. This study aimed to evaluate females' knowledge and attitude toward PCOS as well as to assess PCOS prevalence among the participants. Methods: A total of 240 females were included in the study between January and April 2019. A convenience sampling technique was used to select the participants. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. The analysis included frequencies of discrete variables and descriptors and cross-tabulation of the variables using the Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The results showed a low level of knowledge (scoring < 9) in 41.3%, a good level (scoring between 9 and 15) in 21.3%, and also an excellent level of knowledge (scoring > 15) in 37.5%. The Chi-square statistical test showed significant associations between the level of knowledge and education level, urban residence, health profession, marital status, and the prevalence of PCOS (p < 0.001, < 0.001, < 0.001, 0.045, and < 0.001), respectively. Logistic regression showed that the females' knowledge about PCOS was significantly associated with urban residence and being a health professional (p = 0.004 and p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: The study highlighted that there was inadequate knowledge about the disease among participants and showed an urgent need to improve the knowledge about PCOS among Sudanese women.

Abstract Background: The irrational use of antibiotics for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) may lead to increased antimicrobial resistance among uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli), as well as multidrug resistance worldwide, which will limit available treatment options for UTIs caused by these organisms.This study aimed to determine the resistance pattern of E. coli causing UTIs in out-patients and in-patients of Soba University Hospital. Methods: Data were collected from the laboratory records in the Department of Microbiology in Soba Teaching Hospital by using a predesigned checklist and then analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences. Bivariate analysis (Chi-square test) was used to compare between variables. Results: Out of the 231 E. coli urine cultures, 160 (69.3%) were collected from females. The results showed high resistance to ampicillin (92.4%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (83.3%), cephalexin (90.6%), cefuroxime (72%), ceftazidime (71%), ceftriaxone (72%), ciprofloxacin (68%), and co-trimoxazole (75.3%). Collectively, around 188 (81.4%) were multidrug-resistant. On the other hand, the sensitivities of E. coli isolates were 68.8%, 93.1%, 89.4%, and 100% to gentamicin, amikacin, nitrofurantoin, and carbapenems, respectively. Conclusion: The rate of E. coli resistance was observed to be high to the commonly prescribed drugs for UTIs, including ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, different cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and co-trimoxazole. However, E. coli showed lower resistance rates to nitrofurantoin, amikacin, and carbapenems. Thus, these drugs can be reserved for the empirical treatment of UTIs caused by E. coli.

Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a pandemic caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Although clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are mainly pulmonary, some patients have other systemic manifestations. This study aimed to describe the clinical finding and outcomes in Sudanese patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Methods This retrospective observational study is based on documented files that included patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in seven selected hospitals inside Khartoum. Clinical manifestations, complications and outcomes were extracted from patients’ records using an extraction form designed for this study. Results Data of 243 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were analyzed. The mean (SD) age in years was 55.8 (18.4). Out of 116 participants, 27 of them (23.3%) had severe disease, 15 (12.9%) were critically ill. 67.5% of patients were admitted to the hospital within 7 days from onset of symptoms; most of them were admitted to the wards (n = 140,72.5%). Fever (83.2%), cough (70.7%), and shortness of breath (69.2%) were the most commonly recorded clinical manifestations. Sepsis (9.8%) and acidosis (7.8%) were the most frequently reported complications. Death was the final outcome in 21.4% (56/243). Older age and presence of diabetes were found significantly associated with in-hospital death. The laboratory results showed high CRP in 85.6% (119/139), high ferritin in 88.9% (24/27), lactate dehydrogenase had a median of 409.0 (359–760), D-dimer had a median of 3.3 (1.2–16. 6), and 53/105 (50.5%) had low albumin. Conclusions Fever was the most mentioned sign among the participants, followed by fatigue. Cough and shortness of breath were the most commonly recorded pulmonary symptoms manifested. Our study showed multiple variables were associated with in-hospital death. The mortality rate was high among severe and critically ill patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

Mycetoma is classified as a neglected tropical disease, and despite its spread in Sudan, most physicians and pharmacists do not pay attention to the symptoms and proper treatment of mycetoma. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate knowledge and practice on mycetoma among community pharmacists in Khartoum state. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among community pharmacists in Khartoum state, in the period from August to October 2021. Data was collected from the seven localities within Khartoum state using a validated self-administered questionnaire. The knowledge and practice of community pharmacists were assessed, and their association with demographic characteristics was calculated. Out of 347 pharmacists, 59.9% were females, 64.8% were between 22 and 28 years of age, and 79.3% were bachelor holders. Most of the participants (52.7%) had sufficient knowledge about mycetoma, the most common source of information was lectures (36.6%), more than half participants heard about the Mycetoma Research Center, and most of the cases seen by the participants were in the community (30.5%). There was no association between demographic data and knowledge score, except for knowing about the Mycetoma Research Center and attending workshops and seminars. Moreover, more than half of the participants showed good practice with mycetoma patients. The findings of the current study reflect that more efforts are needed to increase the knowledge and improve the practice of community pharmacists toward mycetoma.

Background: Lower extremity amputation (LEA) in individuals with diabetes is a serious health issue with a considerable physical and social burden. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with LEA in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) patients. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional health facility-based study that recruited 315 diabetes individuals with foot ulcers from the diabetes center in Khartoum, Sudan. Direct interviewing of subjects was used to obtain data, using a standardized validated questionnaire. Chi-square and logistic regression analysis were used in data analysis. Results: 69.5% of the diabetic participants were aged 50 years old or more, and 71.1% were males. Most of the subjects (48.2%) were diabetics for a duration of >10 years, while more than one third (37.5%) of them were diabetic for 5–10 years. The majority (89.5%) had type 2 DM, while only 10.5% were type 1 DM. Two hundred forty-five patients had a left lower foot ulcer; 55.1% of the patients' ulcers were present in the toes, while 21.6% were in the foot sole. The overall prevalence of lower limb amputation was 17.1%. Individuals with diabetes patients with LEA had a higher incidence of hypertension (P = 0.000), retinopathy (P = 0.000), nephropathy (P = 0.002), ulcer size >2.5 cm (P = 0.000), and neuropathy (P = 0.000) through Chi-square analysis. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis showed that amputation was significantly associated with retinopathy (P = 0.000), size of ulcer (P = 0.000), and neuropathy (P = 0.016). Conclusion: The overall prevalence of LEA was 17.1%. The primary risks factors associated with amputation were presence of neuropathy and ulcer size >2.5 cm. Presence of retinopathy predispose diabetic individuals to amputation. Amputation is associated with disability and psychological problems; therefore, there is an urgent need for more improvement in preventative measures and primary health care system in low resource setting country like Sudan in order to decrease diabetes complications, especially patient's education about diabetes management by primary care physicians.

Background: Nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting is the most common type of urinary incontinence in children. The wide prevalence of nocturnal enuresis speaks to the need for an improved understanding of this condition by others to improve the management plan. The management can be motivationally or pharmacologically. Our study aimed to evaluate the management outcomes of primary mono-symptomatic nocturnal enuresis among Sudanese children. Methods: A retrospective hospital-based survey was carried to assess 52 children aged 5–18 years (21:31 male: female ratio) and suffering from primary mono-symptomatic nocturnal enuresis. They divided into two groups; Group 1 (28 patients) were on desmopressin melt tablet 120 mcg once daily before bedtime, while Group 2 (24 patients) were on simple behavioral therapy. Data were collected by a well-designed checklist and analyzed using SPSS. Results: The wetting frequency decreased at the end of treatment by a total response rate of 96.4% with desmopressin and 75% with simple behavioral therapy. The complete response and partial response rate of desmopressin at the end of treatment were 89.3% and 7.1%, respectively. For simple behavioral therapy, the complete response and partial response rates at the end of treatment were 66.7% and 8.3%, respectively. The number of wet night per week at the end of 2 weeks of treatment among the two groups was statistically significant, with P = 0.025. Moreover, the relapse rate was higher with simple behavioral therapy (66.7%) than with desmopressin (57.1%). Conclusion: There is a highly significant decrease in wet nights in response to both desmopressin and simple behavioral therapy, both interventions were effective, desmopressin showed higher efficacy and associated with less relapse rate.

Background: New onset diabetes after renal transplant (NODAT) is a serious complication of therapy with immunosuppressive drugs. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of NODAT and its association with immunosuppressant regimens within 6 months of the administration. Methodology: A descriptive retrospective case finding hospital-based study, conducted in the department of nephrology at Ahmed Gasim Hospital from January to September 2017, on patients who underwent renal transplantation between June 2015 and June 2016. The data were collected using a structured checklist. The collected data were analyzed by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: A total of 110 patients were included, the majority of studied patients were males (71.8%) and in the age group of 20–40 years (50.9%). The most commonly prescribed immunosuppressant regimen was regimen, which consists of methylprednisolone as induction therapy and tacrolimus + azathioprine + prednisolone as maintenance therapy. Regarding the adverse effects, 11 (10%) of them developed NODAT throughout 6 months after transplantation. However, no significant association was found between the postulated risk factors and the incidence of NODAT. Conclusion: The incidence of NODAT was 10% throughout 6 months after transplantation. Correlations between sociodemographic characteristics, immunosuppressant regimens, episodes of rejection with the incidence of NODAT were found statistically insignificant.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes complications in Sudan were increasing at an alarming rate. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of stroke among Sudanese individuals with diabetes. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study recruited 283 individuals with diabetes from three diabetes centers in Sudan. Data were collected using a standardized pretested questionnaire, and data were analyzed using Chi-square and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The average age of participants was 51 (±12 standard deviation) and 35% were aged between 51 and 60 years. Females were 66.8%, and most of the participants (73.9%) were from urban areas and 66.1% received formal education between primary school and university. Body mass index (BMI) classification showed that 34.3% were obese, 31.8% overweight, and 30.4% normal BMI. Diabetes for 1-5 years were observed in 71.7% and for more than 10 years (12%). The majority, i.e., 94.3% had type 2 diabetes mellitus while only 5.7% had type 1. Only one-third of the participants were able to achieve glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) target for diabetes control. The prevalence of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) was 2.5%, hypertension (HTN) was 20%, ischemic heart disease 3.2%, and neuropathy was 45.6%. Chi-square test showed significant association between HbA1c, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein level, and the presence of CVA. Logistic regression analysis showed HbA1c, and the duration of diabetes are significantly associated with the presence of CVA (P = 0.010, 0.014). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of stroke among Sudanese individuals with diabetes was around 2.5%. The main risk factors were HbA1c, HTN, and duration of diabetes.

Background: Depression is the most common prevalent psychiatric condition among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and especially during dialysis. This study aimed to evaluate depression symptoms in Sudanese patients with end-stage renal diseases (ESRD) who undergo hemodialysis. Methods: This is a case finding, hospital-based study recruited 75 patients on dialysis in Khartoum, Sudan. Data were analyzed by statistical package for social science (SPSS, version 23). Results: The percentage of depression symptoms that satisfies the criteria for the diagnosis of major depression disorders in patients with ESRD undergoes dialysis was 68%. The new patients who undergo dialysis for less than 1 year had more depression symptoms (66.7%) than those on dialysis for 2–3 years (21.6%) or more than 3 years with a percentage of11.8%. Chi-square test showed significant associations between depression and age, the duration of dialysis, signs of significant weight loss when no dieting, and when the clinical symptoms related to distress or social or functional impairment (P = 0.016, 0.000, 0.004, and 0.000, respectively). Logistic regression test showed that age and duration of dialysis were significantly associated with depression with (odds ratios [OR]: 0.724, 0.211) Conclusion: More than two-thirds of patients on dialysis have depressive symptoms. Risk factors associated with depression in Sudanese patients on dialysis were age, duration of dialysis, weight loss, and social and functional impairment. Future research is needed in order to assess the benefit of antidepressants in patients on dialysis. Family physicians should be aware of the association between depression and dialysis, in order to provide early treatment and prevent suicide.

Although several guidelines for Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis (SUP) have been published, Acid-Suppressive Therapy (AST) remains largely prescribed in hospitalized patients. Thus, our study aimed to evaluate the current practice surrounding SUP in Soba University Hospital (Khartoum, Sudan). This descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based retrospective study was conducted in the medicine unit of Soba University Hospital. The sample size was 317 participants, and data were collected from medical records from January to December 2018 using a validated checklist. SPSS was applied for data analysis. The mean age of patients was 53 ± 16.8 years, and 170 (54%) of them were female. The mean duration of hospital stay was 10 ± 7.4 days. Seventy-four percent of patients who received prophylaxis did not have an indication for SUP. The majority (116; 36.5%) of patients who were administered parenteral drugs can tolerate oral medications. Overall, the dose of acid-suppressant drugs was optimal in all patients. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), especially pantoprazole, are the dominant AST used (314; 99.1%). Moreover, 315 (99.4%) of the study population were taking medication during hospitalization and two (1%) patients were discharged with AST. The study concluded that SUP was administered to noncritically ill hospitalized patients who lacked or had few risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding. PPIs were the overwhelming choice among practitioners. Collectively, the study showed low adherence to guidelines when prescribing (AST) outside critical care settings. Therefore, there is an urgent need for implementation of practical guidelines in noncritical care settings.

Background: Misoprostol and oxytocin are commonly prescribed drugs by obstetricians to induce labor and prevent postpartum hemorrhage. In Sudan, there is no national guideline for prescribing these drugs. Thus, the prescribers follow the international guidelines. Hence, our study aimed to evaluate the adherence of Sudanese obstetricians to the international guidelines for dispensing misoprostol and oxytocin. Methods: A retrospective descriptive hospital-based study was performed at Saad Abu Ella hospital through their medical files archived in 2018 using a checklist designed by the researcher. Collected data were analyzed and presented in frequency tables using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Results: A total of 357 medical files were evaluated, about 50% of cases examined was in the 25–35 years age range, multigravida pregnant ladies were 62%. General indications of oxytocin and/or misoprostol were induction of labor (17%), postpartum hemorrhage prevention (PPH) after normal vaginal delivery (NVD) (30%) and cesarean sections (32%), evacuation of incomplete miscarriage (20%), and termination of pregnancy (1%). Compared to the guidelines, only 14% were given the recommended regimens for labor induction; 9.4% of women who had undergone NVD were given the recommended regimen to prevent PPH. While, 57% and 43% of the cases with incomplete miscarriage and termination of pregnancy were given the recommended regimens, respectively. Based on the correct indication, total adherence was estimated to be 17%. Conclusions: Higher percentages of cases with incomplete miscarriage and intrauterine fetal death were given the recommended regimens to manage them. While, lower percentages of the participants were given the recommended regimens for labor induction and to prevent PPH.

Background: Nonadherence to medication is widespread in epilepsy and other chronic diseases. Studies reporting adherence to antiepileptic medications are very limited in African countries. Adherence reports from low income African countries are few in contrast to multiple studies from high-income countries. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the level of adherence to antiepileptic medication in Sudanese population. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study of 96 individuals with epilepsy recruited from neurology outpatient clinics in three tertiary centers in Sudan. Data were collected by using a structured questionnaire containing Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-4 (MMAS-4) and Belief about Medication Questionnaire and analyzed by statistical package of social sciences. Results: About 35% of patients were estimated to be nonadherent. Most of the patients (93%) acknowledged their need for antiepileptic drugs. However, 35% had high concern score. Adherence is affected by attitude toward antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and presence of side effects to AEDs. The relation between side effects and adherence was significant (P value 0.000). Furthermore, there was a statistically insignificant relation between the number of drugs used and adherence (P value 0.002). There was a significant relation between adherence, necessity mean score, concern mean score, and necessity concern differential P value 0.000 for all. Conclusion: Nonadherence to antiepileptic medication was reported in almost in one third of individuals in this cohort. There were statistically significant associations between nonadherence and both side effects and number of medications used in the treatment of epilepsy. Therefore, family physician should always check compliance with antiepileptic medication. Patient's education about adherence to medication through family physician may in part decrease the recurrence of epileptic seizures. Further research is needed to explore ways to increase adherence with AEDs in a low resource country like Sudan.

Background: Adherence to antidiabetic medications is crucial for optimum glycemic control and decreasing complications. This study aimed to assess adherence to antidiabetic medications and the associated factors among individuals with type 2 diabetes attending Jabir Abu Eliz Diabetes Centre in Khartoum state, Sudan. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study, recruited 213 individuals with type 2 diabetes, and used a pretested questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences version 21. Logistic regression analysis was used to check for factors that linked to poor adherence to diabetes medication. Results: The median duration of antidiabetic medications use was 8 years; 15.0% were highly adherent to diabetes medications, 44.6% were medium adherent, and 40.4% showed low adherence. Main factors and barriers were medication side effects (18.3%), use of herbal medicine (12.3%), and unavailability of medication (7%). Predictors to nonadherence were gender, and housing status (0.043 and 0.042, respectively). Conclusion: Level of adherence to diabetes medication was unsatisfactory as only 15% showed high adherence. Predictors of nonadherence were gender, and housing status. Effective interventions should be implemented to improve medication adherence, like appropriate patient education and involvement in the treatment plan.

Background: Prediabetes is an important stage before diabetes that can be treated with intensive lifestyle changes. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practice of primary care physician in Sudan about prediabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted among primary care physicians working at two family and primary health care centers in Khartoum. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and expressed as percentages. Results: Out of 200 primary care physicians, 189 completed the questionnaire. 60.8% of the participants had satisfactory knowledge about prediabetes and positive attitude towards prediabetes and their practice was relatively good. Knowledge score was significantly correlated with age (P = 0.000), duration of experience (P value = 0.000), the number of working hours per day (P value = 0.001), and the number patients seen per day (P value = 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that attending courses relevant to prediabetes revealed statistically significant result in knowledge, and attending such courses were likely to be associated with gaining sufficient knowledge than those who didn't by 2 times (P value 0.033, OR 2, CI. 1.063-4.079). Conclusions: Primary care physicians in Sudan have satisfactory knowledge, attitude, and practice about prediabetes. As they are in the front line in dealing with community, primary care physicians' efforts can help in slowing down the epidemic of diabetes in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate lifestyle practices among individuals with diabetes may influence the progression of diabetes and its complications. The aim of this study was to assess the lifestyle practices among individuals with diabetes in Sudan. METHODOLOGY: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, health facility-based study conducted in 3 diabetes centers treating individuals with diabetes. The data were collected using a standardized pretested metabolic questionnaire about lifestyle and were analyzed by performing descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS program version 23. RESULTS: A total of 528 patients with diabetes answered the questionnaire. There were 52.1% of female participants and 72.9% of urban residents. 23.9% were obese, regular exercise was reported by 27.7%, and no exercise by 17%. There was a statistically significant association between lifestyle practices and gender (P < 0.001), age (P < 0.001), educational level (P = 0.002), marital status (P < 0.001), duration of diabetes (P < 0.001), hypertension (P < 0.001), high-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein (P < 0.001), and HbA1c level (P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed male gender and education were significantly associated with lifestyle changes. Men were more likely to engage in favorable lifestyle practices than women (P < 0.001), while those with no formal education were less likely to engage in healthy lifestyle (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Health authorities in Sudan will need to put more efforts into education for promoting self-awareness and good lifestyle practices in the population with diabetes.
