Abstract

Generally, literature on community-based development organizations has cast a rather simplistic image of these organizations as "caught" in the middle. Constantly entangled in webs of capitalism and affordability, they are portrayed as having to choose whether to side with the residents and focus on the use value of the neighborhood or the exchange value of business interests.This paper seeks to advance the study of community development corporations by analyzing several strategies that these organizations use to maintain productive interactions with community residents. Using ethnographic data, I argue that development organizations use their specific skill set to serve as brokers in order to tailor their interaction strategies to both investors and residents. The middle position also gives them access to multiple cultural repertoires that they can selectively use in the appropriate situations. Whether it is community participation in a festival, students volunteering for a recycling program, or simply the absence of accusations of gentrification, the need for a productive and cooperative relationship between the organizations and the residents and outside investors is paramount. Organizations in the middle are able to simultaneously align themselves with both groups. This bridging activity is a function of the middle location of the organization and possibly a requirement for it as well. the middle position provides the possibility of flexibility; of using the plurality of meanings as a resource to unite groups around the same project. The article discusses some of the useful interludes. Each of Hazel Hudson's interlude is based on two well-known tunes, treated at times in successive, and at others in simultaneous, manner: the first on "Bunessan" and "Amazing Grace," the second on "Ebenezer" and "Let my people go," the third on "St. Denio" and "Kum Ba Ya," and the fourth on "Shout for Joy" and "Cwm Rhondda." Metronome indications are supplied, and bar numbers facilitate the calculation of the respective lengths: 132, 146, 74 and a mere 44, bars. Total playing time is very roughly 12 minutes.

Abstract

Purpose: Intrafraction organ motion can produce dosimetric errors in radiotherapy. Commonly, the linear accelerator is gated using real-time breathing phase obtained by way of external sensors. However, the external anatomy does not always correlate well with the internal position. We examined a beam gating technique using signals from implanted wireless transponders that provided real-time feedback on the tumor location without an imaging dose to the patient. Methods and Materials: An interface was developed between Calypso Medical''s four-dimensional electromagnetic tracking system and a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator. A film phantom was mounted on a motion platform programmed with lung motion trajectories. Deliveries were performed when the beam was gated according to the signal from the wireless transponders. The dosimetric advantages of beam gating and the system latencies were quantified. Results: Beam gating using on internal position monitoring provided up to a twofold increase in the dose gradients. The percentage of points failing to be within ±10 cGy of the planned dose (maximal dose, ∼200 cGy) was 3.4% for gating and 32.1% for no intervention in the presence of motion. The mean latencies between the transponder position and linear accelerator modulation were 75.0 ±12.7 ms for beam on and 65.1 ± 12.9 ms for beam off. Conclusion: We have presented the results from a novel method for gating the linear accelerator using trackable wireless internal fiducial markers without the use of ionizing radiation for imaging. The latencies observed were suitable for gating using electromagnetic fiducial markers, which results in dosimetric improvements for irradiation in the presence of motion. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
