Fusicoccin-A (FC-A) is a diterpene glucoside produced by a pathogenic fungus. Since its discovery, FC-A has been widely recognized as a phytotoxin that induces stomatal opening and leaf wilting, eventually leading to plant death. In this study, we present the first evidence that FC-A enhances plant growth by stabilizing the protein-protein interaction between plasma membrane (PM) H + -ATPase and 14-3-3 in guard cells. Long-term treatment of Arabidopsis plants with FC-A resulted in ~ 30% growth enhancement. Structurally similar fusicoccin-J (FC-J) showed a similar degree of growth-promotion activity as FC-A, whereas the more hydrophilic fusicoccin-H (FC-H) exhibited no effect on plant growth, indicating that the enhancement of plant growth observed with FC-A and FC-J involves upregulation of the protein-protein interaction between PM H + -ATPase and 14-3-3 in guard cells, which promotes stomatal opening and photosynthesis., (© 2024. We present robust pixel design methodologies for a vertical avalanche photodiode-based CMOS image sensor, taking account of three critical practical factors: (i) "guard-ring-free" pixel isolation layout, (ii) device characteristics "insensitive" to applied voltage and temperature, and (iii) stable operation subject to intense light exposure. The "guard-ring-free" pixel design is established by resolving the tradeoff relationship between electric field concentration and pixel isolation. The effectiveness of the optimization strategy is validated both by simulation and experiment. To realize insensitivity to voltage and temperature variations, a global feedback resistor is shown to effectively suppress variations in device characteristics such as photon detection efficiency and dark count rate. An in-pixel overflow transistor is also introduced to enhance the resistance to strong illumination. The robustness of the fabricated VAPD-CIS is verified by characterization of 122 different chips and through a high-temperature and intense-light-illumination operation test with 5 chips, conducted at 125 °C for 1000 h subject to 940 nm light exposure equivalent to 10 kLux.

Purpose: Pteridines are metabolites of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH 4 ), being coenzymes for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). No study has clarified the relationship among pteridines and NOS, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) generated by pteridines, and reactive oxygen species. In this study, we administered arginine, a precursor of NO, and confirmed changes in the levels of pteridines, FeNO, and reactive oxygen species and their relationship to clarify the pathogenesis of airway inflammation in which oxidative stress is involved, such as bronchial asthma., Patients and Methods: This is a prospective, randomized open-label study. Children, aged 2 to 15 years, who were scheduled for growth hormone stimulation tests and were able to undergo a respiratory function test were recruited. They were randomly divided into two groups: arginine-administered and control groups. In the former, L-arginine hydrochloride was intravenously administered. After administration, the levels of diacron-reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), serum pteridines, serum amino acids, and fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) were measured., Results: We analyzed 15 children aged 4 to 14 years. In the arginine-administered group, there was an increase in the FeNO level and a decrease in the d-ROMs level, reaching a peak 30 min after administration, compared with the control group. In addition, there was a decrease in the serum biopterin level and an increase in the d-ROMs level, reaching peak 60 min after administration., Conclusion: The administration of L-arginine increased the NO level and decreased the d-ROMs level. Due to this, biopterin may be consumed and decreased, leading to an increase in the d-ROMs level. Background: Abnormal activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling is associated with various aspects of cancer development. This study explored the roles of novel target genes of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in cancer cells., Methods: Using the haploid chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line HAP1, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed to identify genes whose expression was increased by APC disruption and reversed by β-catenin knockdown (KD). The regulatory mechanism and function of one of the candidate genes was investigated in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells., Results: In total, 64 candidate genes whose expression was regulated by Wnt/β-catenin signaling were identified. Of these candidate genes, the expression levels of six were reduced by β-catenin KD in HCT116 CRC cells in our previous microarray. One of these genes was Visinin-like 1 (VSNL1), which belongs to the neuronal calcium-sensor gene family. The expression of VSNL1 was regulated by the β-catenin/TCF7L2 complex via two TCF7L2-binding elements in intron 1. VSNL1 KD-induced apoptosis in VSNL1-positive CRC cells. Additionally, forced expression of wild-type VSNL1, but not a myristoylation, Ca 2+ -binding, or dimerization-defective mutant, suppressed the apoptosis induced by camptothecin and doxorubicin in VSNL1-negative CRC cells., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that VSNL1, a novel target gene of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, is associated with apoptosis resistance in CRC cells., (© 2023 The Authors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV), a parameter of the autonomic nervous system activity (ANSA), and postoperative delirium and postoperative events. This retrospective cohort study included elderly patients aged 65 years or older who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after cardiovascular surgery. ANSA was measured using HRV parameters for 1 h at daytime and 1 h at night-time before ICU discharge. The primary endpoint was the effect of HRV parameters and delirium on mortality and readmission rates within 1 year after discharge, and the secondary endpoint was the association between HRV parameters and delirium. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the association between HRV parameters and postoperative events by adjusting for delirium and pre and postoperative information. A total of 71 patients, 39 without delirium and 32 with delirium, met the inclusion criteria. The incidence of death and readmission within 1 year was significantly higher in the delirium group and in the group with higher daytime HF (high frequency power) and r-MSSD (square root of the squared mean of the difference of successive NN intervals), parameters of the parasympathetic nervous system activity (PNSA), than that in other groups. Furthermore, the delirium group had significantly higher HF and r-MSSD than the nondelirium group. Even after adjusting for confounding factors in the multivariate analysis, a trend of higher daytime HF and r-MSSD was observed, indicating a significant effect on the occurrence of combined events within 1 year of discharge. ICU delirium has been associated with higher daytime HF and r-MSSD, parameters of PNSA. Sorghum is the fifth most important cereal crop. Here we performed molecular genetic analyses of the 'SUGARY FETERITA' (SUF) variety, which shows typical sugary endosperm traits (e.g., wrinkled seeds, accumulation of soluble sugars, and distorted starch). Positional mapping indicated that the corresponding gene was located on the long arm of chromosome 7. Within the candidate region of 3.4 Mb, a sorghum ortholog for maize Su1 ( SbSu ) encoding a starch debranching enzyme ISA1 was found. Sequencing analysis of SbSu in SUF uncovered nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the coding region, containing substitutions of highly conserved amino acids. Complementation of the rice sugary-1 ( osisa1 ) mutant line with the SbSu gene recovered the sugary endosperm phenotype. Additionally, analyzing mutants obtained from an EMS-induced mutant panel revealed novel alleles with phenotypes showing less severe wrinkles and higher Brix scores. These results suggested that SbSu was the corresponding gene for the sugary endosperm. Expression profiles of starch synthesis genes during the grain-filling stage demonstrated that a loss-of-function of SbSu affects the expression of most starch synthesis genes and revealed the fine-tuned gene regulation in the starch synthetic pathway in sorghum. Haplotype analysis using 187 diverse accessions from a sorghum panel revealed the haplotype of SUF showing severe phenotype had not been used among the landraces and modern varieties. Thus, weak alleles (showing sweet and less severe wrinkles), such as in the abovementioned EMS-induced mutants, are more valuable for grain sorghum breeding. Our motor system allows us to generate an enormous breadth of voluntary actions, but it remains unclear whether and how much motor skill translates across tasks. For example, if an individual is good at gross motor control, are they also good at fine motor control? Previous research about the generalization across motor skills has been equivocal. Here, we compare human performance across five different motor skills. High correlation between task measures would suggest a certain level of underlying sensorimotor ability that dictates performance across all task types. Low correlation would suggest specificity in abilities across tasks. Performance on a reaching task, an object-hitting task, a bimanual coordination task, a rapid motion task and a target tracking task, was examined twice in a cohort of 25 healthy individuals. Across the cohort, we found relatively high correlations for different spatial and temporal parameters within a given task (16-53% of possible parameter pairs were significantly correlated, with significant r values ranging from 0.53 to 0.97) but relatively low correlations across different tasks (2.7-4.4% of possible parameter pairs were significantly correlated, with significant r values ranging from 0.53-0.71). We performed a cluster analysis across all individuals using 76 performance measures across all tasks for the two repeat testing sessions and demonstrated that repeat tests were commonly grouped together (16 of 25 pairs were grouped next to each other). Visual and proprioceptive feedback both contribute to perceptual decisions, but it remains unknown how these feedback signals are integrated together or consider factors such as delays and variance during online control. We investigated this question by having participants reach to a target with randomly applied mechanical and/or visual disturbances. We observed that the presence of visual feedback during a mechanical disturbance did not increase the size of the muscle response significantly but did decrease variance, consistent with a dynamic Bayesian integration model. In a control experiment, we verified that vision had a potent influence when mechanical and visual disturbances were both present but opposite in sign. These results highlight a complex process for multisensory integration, where visual feedback has a relatively modest influence when the limb is mechanically disturbed, but a substantial influence when visual feedback becomes misaligned with the limb. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Visual feedback is more accurate, but proprioceptive feedback is faster. How should you integrate these sources of feedback to guide limb movement? As predicted by dynamic Bayesian models, the size of the muscle response to a mechanical disturbance was essentially the same whether visual feedback was present or not. Only under artificial conditions, such as when shifting the position of a cursor representing hand position, can one observe a muscle response from visual feedback.

We conducted an online national survey using the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) on 42,880 people in Japan to identify gambling addiction prevalence differences with regard to gambling type and region. This study included 14,780 individuals (valid responses) who engaged in gambling activities in the past year. There was a large difference in mean SOGS score by gambling type: public gambling and casinos score ≈ 4.0, whereas lotteries (including numbers, etc.) ≈ 1.43. SOGS scores were much higher for those who participated in more than one gambling type than for those who participated in only one type. Regional differences in SOGS scores were also confirmed, with more populous prefectures having lower and less populous having higher SOGS scores. Integrating SOGS scores with existing data concerning hobbies and recreational behaviors across regions indicated that regions characterized by lower SOGS scores were also characterized by greater activity for hobbies and recreational behaviors.

Heterosis helps increase the biomass of many crops; however, while models for its mechanisms have been proposed, it is not yet fully understood. Here, we use a QTL analysis of the progeny of a high-biomass sorghum F 1 hybrid to examine heterosis. Five QTLs were identified for culm length and were explained using the dominance model. Five resultant homozygous dominant alleles were used to develop pyramided lines, which produced biomasses like the original F 1 line. Cloning of one of the uncharacterised genes (Dw7a) revealed that it encoded a MYB transcription factor, that was not yet proactively used in modern breeding, suggesting that combining classic dw1or dw3, and new (dw7a) genes is an important breeding strategy. In conclusion, heterosis is explained in this situation by the dominance model and a combination of genes that balance the shortness and early flowering of the parents, to produce F 1 seed yields.

Objectives: To examine the inter-rater reliability of the thumb localizing test (TLT) and its validity against quantitative measures of proprioception., Methods: The TLT was assessed by two raters in a standardized manner in 40 individuals with hemiparetic stroke. Inter-rater reliability was examined with weighted Kappa. For the quantitative measures, a bimanual matching task in a planar robotic device was performed. Without vision, each participant moved the unaffected hand to the perceived mirrored location of the affected hand, which was passively moved by the robot. Three measures were taken after 54 trials: Variability, trial-to-trial variability of the mirrored-matched locations; Area, the ratio of the area enclosed by the active hand relative to the passive hand; and Shift, systematic shifts between the passive and active hands. The correlation between the TLT and each robotic measure was examined with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient., Results: The overall weighted kappa of the TLT was 0.84 (P<0.001). The TLT correlated highly with Area (r = -0.71, P<0.001) and moderately with Variability (r = 0.40, P = 0.011). Unilateral spatial neglect (USN) can be defined as a failure to orient to contra-lesional stimuli in the absence of either sensory or motor defects. Although the behavioral and clinical effects of prism adaptation (PA) are widely accepted, its underlying mechanisms are still controversial. However, recent neuroimaging and neurophysiological studies support the idea that PA affects the visual attention and sensorimotor networks including in the parietal cortex and cerebellum. We investigate the effect of PA on functional connectivity (FC) in attention and sensorimotor networks, evaluating changes of resting-state FC before and after PA in healthy individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MR sessions were conducted before PA, after PA (Post1), and 1 h after PA (Post2). The FC between the right frontal eye (FEF) field and the right intraparietal sulcus was significantly decreased at Post1 and that between the right FEF and the right anterior cingulate cortex was significantly increased after PA and recovered within 1 h. This is the first study to demonstrate transient changes of resting-state FC in the right dorsal attention network (DAN) by PA in healthy adults using fMRI. These results will contribute to the elucidation of the underling mechanism of PA therapy and to devising new therapies for USN and/or other higher cortical dysfunctions., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: A critical feature for the maintenance of precise skeletal muscle force production by the human brain is its ability to configure motor function activity dynamically and adaptively in response to visual and somatosensory information. Existing studies have concluded that not only the sensorimotor area but also distributed cortical areas act cooperatively in the generation of motor commands for voluntary force production to the desired level. However, less attention has been paid to such physiological mechanisms in conventional brain-computer interface (BCI) design and implementation. We proposed a new, physiologically inspired two-stage decoding method to see its contribution on accuracy improvement of BCI., Approach: We performed whole-head high-density scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) recording during a right finger force-matching task at three strength levels (20%, 40%, and 60% maximal voluntary contraction following a resting state). A two-stage regression approach was employed that decodes muscle contraction level from EEG signals in the multi-level force-matching task and translates them into: (1) presence/absence of muscle contraction as a first stage; and (2) muscle contraction level as a second stage. Dimensionality reduction of the EEG signals, using principal component analysis, avoided multicollinearity during multiple regression, and data-driven stepwise multiple regression identified EEG components that were involved in the multi-level force-matching task., Main Results: An alternatively tuned two-stage regressor accurately decoded muscle contraction level with online processing rather than the conventional decoders, and identified EEG components that were related to voluntary force production. Relaxation/contraction state-dependent EEG components were localized dominantly in the contralateral parieto-temporal regions, whereas multi-level force regulation-dependent EEG components came from the fronto-parietal regions., Significance: Our findings identify respective cortical signalings during relaxation/contraction and multi-level force regulation using a sensor-based approach with EEG. Simulation-based assessment of the current physiologically inspired decoding technique proved improved accuracy in online BCI control.

Intestinal glucose absorption varies with growth; however, the dynamics of these variations has not been yet fully elucidated in broiler chickens. The present study aimed to compare jejunal glucose uptake and maltose digestion in broilers of 2 different ages, i.e., 1- vs. 5 wk old. Oral D-maltose gavage, everted sac, and Ussing chamber experiments were carried out to investigate intestinal glucose absorption and mRNA expression of glucose-transport-related genes as well as jejunal maltase activity. Upon gavage, glucose concentrations peaked at 10 min post-administration in 1-wk-old chicks, while they peaked at 40 min in 5-wk-old chickens. Glucose concentrations at 10 min were significantly higher in the 1-wk-old chicks (P = 0.010). Using the everted sacs experimental setup, 5 intestinal regions i.e., duodenum, proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, proximal ileum, and distal ileum, were targeted to examine D-maltose digestion and glucose transport across the intestinal mucosa. In the distal and proximal ileum, glucose concentrations were found to be significantly higher in the serosal compartment of the 1-wk-old chicks upon incubation with D-maltose (25 mM) (P < 0.05), while in the mucosal compartment the levels were significantly higher in the 5-wk-old chickens (P < 0.05). An Ussing chamber setup was employed to measure glucose-induced short-circuit current (ΔIsc) in the mucosal epithelium of the jejunum. In response to the addition of D-maltose (10 mM) into the mucosal compartment, ΔIsc was significantly higher in the 1-wk-old chicks (P = 0.018). Furthermore, no variations in jejunal maltase activity were observed between the 2 age groups. While jejunal glucose absorption was lower in the 5-wk-old chickens, the mRNA expression levels of jejunal SGLT1, GLUT2, and Na+/K+-ATPase did not show any significant differences between the 2 age groups. The objective of the present study was to clarify the variation in and properties of mental images and policies used to regulate specific image selection when learning to control a brain-computer interface. Healthy volunteers performed a reaching task with a virtually generated monkey tail-like object on a computer monitor by regulating event-related desynchronization (ERD) on the buttock area of the sensorimotor cortex as recorded by electroencephalogram (EEG). Participants were instructed to find a free image by which the tail was well controlled. Seven participants frequently returned to specific images that were mostly unrelated to a tail, and returned to these images on the last day of training. The ERD levels were greater during use of those selected images versus when selected images were not employed. Our results suggest that individuals adopted a mental strategy where they imagine what would reduce the prediction error between the predicted and actual BCI actions.

Background: Pteridines are metabolites of tetrahydrobiopterin, which serves as co-enzyme of nitric oxide synthase. We sought to investigate the usefulness of pteridines as biomarkers for childhood asthma control., Methods: We conducted a single-center prospective cohort study involving 168 asthmatic children aged 4-17 years who visited the periodical asthma checkup program. Serum neopterin and biopterin levels were measured as pteridines at each visit along with measurement of FeNO, respiratory function tests, nasal eosinophil test, blood eosinophil count, and IgE level. We calculated coefficients for relation between pteridines and asthma control, which was assessed by questionnaires (JPAC: Japanese Pediatric Asthma Control Program)., Results: A total of 168 participants aged 10.3 ± 3.39 years (mean ± SD) with asthma were recruited. The participants in this study contained 58 patients (34.5%) of complete-controlled based on JPAC, 132 patients (76.0%) of well-controlled group based on GINA. FeNO and serum neopterin level did not correlate with following period's JPAC scores. In contrast, serum biopterin level significantly correlated with following period's JPAC total score (Coefficients 0.398; 95% CI 0.164 to 0.632; p value 0.001) and frequency of wheezing during exercise (Coefficients 0.272; 95% CI 0.217 to 0.328; p value < 0.001)., Conclusions: We found serum biopterin effected the following period's control status of asthmatic children, thus monitoring biopterin level will be a useful for management of asthma to adjust treatment., (Copyright © 2018 Japanese Society of Allergology. The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of self-exercise for elderly patients in an acute hospital after hip fracture. This retrospective observational study used data from the Japan Rehabilitation Database spanning 2005-2015. This study identified in-hospital hip fracture patients admitted to an acute hospital. After applying exclusion criteria, 375 patients were eligible. The primary outcome was motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency. Of the patients with hip fracture, 39% performed self-exercises. Patients who performed self-exercise had significantly higher motor FIM efficiency than those who did not (1.22 vs. 0.79 ; P ?0.01). Multivariable regression analysis showed that motor FIM efficiency was significantly and positively correlated with self-exercise (coefficient, 0.25 ; 95% confidence interval, 0.13 to 0.43 ; P ?0.01). The data suggest that self-exercise is associated with good rehabilitation outcomes in hip fracture patients. J. Med. Invest. 66 : 178-181, February, 2019.

Objective: Ensiling of tannin-rich fruit byproducts (FB) involves quantitative and qualitative changes in the tannins, which would consequently change the rumen fermentation characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate whether ensiled FBs are effective in mitigating methane emission from ruminants by conducting in vitro assessments., Methods: Fruit byproducts (grape pomace, wild grape pomace, and persimmon skin) were collected and subjected to four-week ensiling by Lactobacillus buchneri inoculant. A defined feed component with or without FB samples (both fresh and ensiled material) were subjected to in vitro anaerobic culturing using rumen fluid sampled from beef cattle, and the fermentation parameters and microbial populations were monitored., Results: Reduced methane production and a proportional change in total volatile fatty acids (especially enhanced propionate proportion) was noted in bottles containing the FBs compared with that in the control (without FB). In addition, we found lower gene copy number of archaeal 16S rRNA and considerably higher levels of one of the major fibrolytic bacteria (Fibrobacter succinogenes) in the bottles containing FBs than in the control, particularly, when it was included in a forage-based feed. However, in the following cultivation experiment, we observed that FBs failed to exhibit a significant difference in methane production with or without polyethylene glycol, implying that tannins in the FBs may not be responsible for the mitigation of methane generation., Conclusion: The results of the in vitro cultivation experiments indicated that not only the composition but also ensiling of FBs affected rumen fermentation patterns and the degree of methane generation. This is primarily because of the compositional changes in the fibrous fraction during ensiling as well as the presence of readily fermented substrates, whereas tannins in these FBs seemed to have little effect on the ruminal fermentation kinetics.

It has been reported that it is possible to observe transient changes in resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in the attention networks of healthy adults during treatment with prism adaptation. by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) (see "Prism adaptation changes resting-state functional connectivity in the dorsal stream of visual attention networks in healthy adults: A fMRI study" (Tsujimoto et al., 2018) [1]. Recent neuroimaging and neurophysiological studies support the idea that prism adaptation (PA) affects the visual attention and sensorimotor networks, which include the parietal cortex and cerebellum. These data demonstrate the effect of PA on resting-state functional connectivity between the primary motor cortex and cerebellum. Additionally, it evaluates changes of resting-state FC before and after PA in healthy individuals using fMRI. Analyses focus on FC between the primary motor cortex and cerebellum, and the correlation between changes in FC and its after-effects following a single PA session. Here, we show data that demonstrate the change in resting-state FC between the primary motor cortex and cerebellum, as well as a correlation between the change ratio of FC and the amplitude of the after-effect.

We have developed a direct time-of-flight (TOF) 250 m ranging Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor (CIS) based on a 688 × 384 pixels array of vertical avalanche photodiodes (VAPD). Each pixel of the CIS comprises VAPD with a standard four transistor pixel circuit equipped with an analogue capacitor to accumulate or count avalanche pulses. High power near infrared (NIR) short (<50 ns) and repetitive (6 kHz) laser pulses are illuminated through a diffusing optics. By globally gating the VAPD, each pulse is counted in the in-pixel counter enabling extraction of sub-photon level signal. Depth map imaging with a 10 cm lateral resolution is realized from 1 m to 250 m range by synthesizing subranges images of photon counts. Advantages and limitation of an in-pixel circuit are described. The developed CIS is expected to supersede insufficient resolution of the conventional light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems and the short range of indirect CIS TOF.

Objectives: The aim of this retrospective observational study was to clarify the usefulness and safety of percutaneous sonographically assisted endoscopic gastrostomy or duodenostomy (PSEGD) using the introduction method., Methods: The information for the sequential 22 patients who could not undergo standard percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and underwent PSEGD for 3 y was extracted and was reviewed. In standard PEG, we performed pushing out of the stomach from the mediastinum and full distention to adhere the gastric wall to the peritoneal wall without interposing of the intraperitoneal tissues by air inflation and a turning-over procedure of the endoscope, four-point square fixation of the stomach to the peritoneal wall by using a Funada-style gastric wall fixation kit under diaphanoscopy, extracorporeal thumb pushing, and in difficult cases extracorporeal ultrasound guidance, and if necessary confirmation of fixation of the gastric wall to the peritoneal wall and placement of the PEG tube without any interposed tissues by using ultrasound., Results: Twenty-one patients (95.5%) successfully underwent PSEGD. Early complications (more than grade 2 in Clavien-Dindo classification) just after the procedure occurred in one case (active oozing). We did not encounter a case with mispuncture of the intraperitoneal organs and tissues. Delayed complications occurring within 1 mo were pneumonia in five patients, including death in three cases; bleeding from puncture site in two patients; and atrial fibrilation in one patient., Conclusion: PSEGD using the introduction method is a useful procedure for difficult patients in whom intraperitoneal organ or tissue is suspected to be interposed between the abdominal wall and stomach., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Pith parenchyma cells store water in various plant organs. These cells are especially important for producing sugar and ethanol from the sugar juice of grass stems. In many plants, the death of pith parenchyma cells reduces their stem water content. Previous studies proposed that a hypothetical D gene might be responsible for the death of stem pith parenchyma cells in Sorghum bicolor , a promising energy grass, although its identity and molecular function are unknown. Here, we identify the D gene and note that it is located on chromosome 6 in agreement with previous predictions. Sorghum varieties with a functional D allele had stems enriched with dry, dead pith parenchyma cells, whereas those with each of six independent nonfunctional D alleles had stems enriched with juicy, living pith parenchyma cells. D expression was spatiotemporally coupled with the appearance of dead, air-filled pith parenchyma cells in sorghum stems. Among D homologs that are present in flowering plants, Arabidopsis ANAC074 also is required for the death of stem pith parenchyma cells. D and ANAC074 encode previously uncharacterized NAC transcription factors and are sufficient to ectopically induce programmed death of Arabidopsis culture cells via the activation of autolytic enzymes. Taken together, these results indicate that D and its Arabidopsis ortholog, ANAC074 , are master transcriptional switches that induce programmed death of stem pith parenchyma cells. Background: Rehabilitation characteristics in high-performance hospitals after acute stroke are not clarified. This retrospective observational study aimed to clarify the characteristics of high-performance hospitals in acute stroke rehabilitation., Methods: Patients with stroke discharged from participating acute hospitals were extracted from the Japan Rehabilitation Database for the period 2006-2015. We found 6855 patients from 14 acute hospitals who were eligible for analysis in this study after applying exclusion criteria. We divided facilities into high-performance hospitals and low-performance hospitals using the median of the Functional Independent Measure efficiency for each hospital. We compared rehabilitation characteristics between high- and low-performance hospitals., Results: High-performance hospitals had significantly shorter length of stay. More patients were discharged to home in the high-performance hospitals compared with low-performance hospitals. Patients in high-performance hospitals received greater amounts of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Patients in high-performance hospitals engaged in more self-exercise, weekend exercise, and exercise in wards. There was more participation of board-certified physiatrists and social workers in high-performance hospitals., Conclusions: Our data suggested that amount, timing, and type of rehabilitation, and participation of multidisciplinary staff are essential for high performance in acute stroke rehabilitation., (Copyright © 2018 National Stroke Association. Aim: To test the hypothesis that the functional outcome of hip fracture patients who receive weekend rehabilitation is better than that of similar patients who undergo non-weekend rehabilitation., Methods: The present retrospective observational study used data from the Japan Rehabilitation Database spanning 2005-2015. We identified in-hospital hip fracture patients admitted to acute hospitals. After applying exclusion criteria, 469 patients were eligible. The primary outcome was motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) efficiency., Results: Of the patients with hip fracture, 68.0% received weekend rehabilitation. The patients who received weekend rehabilitation had significantly higher scores in motor FIM efficiency (mean 1.08 vs 0.73, P < 0.001), FIM efficiency (mean 1.12 vs 0.79, P = 0.001) and shorter length of stay (mean 32 vs 54, P < 0.001) than the patients without weekend rehabilitation. Multivariate linear regression analysis identified the weekend rehabilitation as a significant factor in motor FIM efficiency (coefficient 0.237, 95% confidence interval 0.074-0.400, P = 0.004), FIM efficiency (coefficient 0.235, 95% confidence interval 0.079-0.391, P = 0.003) and length of stay (coefficient -9.649, 95% confidence interval -18.194 to -1.104, P = 0.027)., Conclusions: The present cohort analysis showed that weekend rehabilitation for hip fracture patients can lead to functional recovery and reduce the length of stay. Aim: To clarify the effectiveness of preoperative physical therapy for older patients after hip fracture in an acute care hospital., Methods: In the present retrospective observational study, data from the Japan Rehabilitation Database were analyzed for patients admitted to an acute care hospital with hip fracture between 2005 and 2015. In this study, all eligible patients received surgery within 10 days of admission. Propensity score analysis was used to compare outcomes between patients who underwent preoperative rehabilitation and those who did not. The primary outcome was motor Functional Independence Measure (FIM) gain., Results: Of the 681 patients eligible after applying exclusion criteria, 50% underwent preoperative rehabilitation after hip fracture. Both before and after adjustment by inverse probability weighting, motor FIM gain was significantly higher in patients who underwent preoperative rehabilitation (motor FIM gain 31.1 ± 18.2 before weighting, 31.1 ± 18.2 after weighting) than in those who did not (motor FIM gain 24.6 ± 18.1 before weighting, P < 0.01; 26.2 ± 17.6 after weighting, P < 0.02). In addition, motor FIM effectiveness and motor FIM at discharge were significantly higher among patients who underwent preoperative rehabilitation., Conclusions: Our data suggest that preoperative rehabilitation after hip fracture is associated with better rehabilitation outcomes than no preoperative rehabilitation. Recent studies have revealed rapid (e.g., hours to days) training-induced cortical structural changes using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Currently, there is great interest in studying how such a rapid brain structural change affects behavioral improvement. Structural reorganization contributes to memory or enhanced information processing in the brain and may increase its capability of skill learning. If the gray matter (GM) is capable of such rapid structural reorganization upon training, the extent of volume increase may characterize the learning process. To shed light on this issue, we conducted a case series study of 5-day visuomotor learning using neuroanatomical imaging, and analyzed the effect of rapid brain structural change on motor performance improvement via regression analysis. Participants performed an upper-arm reaching task under left-right mirror-reversal for five consecutive days; T1-weighted MR imaging was performed before training, after the first and fifth days, and 1 week and 1 month after training. We detected increase in GM volume on the first day (i.e., a few hours after the first training session) in the primary motor cortex (M1), primary sensory cortex (S1), and in the hippocampal areas. Notably, regression analysis revealed that individual differences in such short-term increases were associated with the learning levels after 5 days of training. These results suggest that GM structural changes are not simply a footprint of previous motor learning but have some relationship with future motor learning. In conclusion, the present study provides new insight into the role of structural changes in causing functional changes during motor learning.

Beta-band corticomuscular coherence (CMC) observed between the sensorimotor cortex activity and contracting muscle is declaratively described as a neurophysiological reflection of sensorimotor binding. However, much remains unknown about the functional meaning of 'sensorimotor binding.' The efficacy of information binding in the sensorimotor system is assumed to be influenced by the gain of the feedback controller, which is regulated through a process that may in part be implemented in the primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1). Thus, we predicted that CMC is modulated together with feedback gains during motor learning. We examined this hypothesis using a hand-reaching adaptation task under a novel dynamical environment. CMC modulation was assessed before and after adaptation, and feedback gains were probed by long latency triggered muscle reactions. Overall, we found that CMC significantly decreased during the adaptation period, and such CMC decrease was associated with the decreased long latency reflexes. These results suggest that CMC has a related function to modulation of feedback gains. Background: Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is used as a raw material for biofuels because it accumulates sugars at high levels in the stem. Lodging of sorghum occurs when the soil is wet and very high winds blow across the field. In root lodging, the roots are pulled loose from the soil, causing the plant to fall over. Lodging reduces the yield of nonstructural carbohydrates. It is not yet clear which genes show changes in expression when sorghum falls over. We compared whole-gene expression in the mature stems of intact and lodged sorghum plants, with a focus on comparisons from the perspective of differences in sugar accumulation or degradation., Results: Lodging decreased sucrose content, starch content, and ratio of sucrose to total sugars in the stems of the sorghum cultivar SIL-05. Particular paralogs of SWEET and TMT family genes, which encode sucrose or hexose transporters, or both, were significantly highly expressed in intact or lodged sorghum stems. In intact stems, genes encoding the glucose-6-phosphate translocator, aquaporins, and enzymes involved in photosynthesis and starch synthesis were highly expressed. In lodged sorghum stems, expression of genes associated with sucrose or starch degradation or energy production was increased. Notably, expression of genes encoding enzymes catalyzing irreversible reactions and associated with the first steps of these metabolic pathways (e.g. INV, SUS, and hexokinase- and fructokinase-encoding genes) was significantly increased by lodging. Expression of SUT, SPS, and SPP was almost the same in intact and lodged sorghum., Conclusions: Specific paralogs of sucrose-associated genes involved in metabolic pathways and in membrane transport were expressed in the stems of sorghum SIL-05 at the full-ripe stage. Root lodging drastically changed the expression of these genes from sucrose accumulation to degradation. The changes in gene expression resulted in decreases in sugar content and in the proportion of sucrose to hexoses in the stems of lodged plants.

Background: Motor planning, imagery or execution is associated with event-related desynchronization (ERD) of mu rhythm oscillations (8-13 Hz) recordable over sensorimotor areas using electroencephalography (EEG). It was shown that motor imagery involving distal muscles, e.g. finger movements, results in contralateral ERD correlating with increased excitability of the contralateral corticospinal tract (c-CST). Following the rationale that purposefully increasing c-CST excitability might facilitate motor recovery after stroke, ERD recently became an attractive target for brain-computer interface (BCI)-based neurorehabilitation training. It was unclear, however, whether ERD would also reflect excitability of the ipsilateral corticospinal tract (i-CST) that mainly innervates proximal muscles involved in e.g. shoulder movements. Such knowledge would be important to optimize and extend ERD-based BCI neurorehabilitation protocols, e.g. to restore shoulder movements after stroke. Here we used single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) targeting the ipsilateral primary motor cortex to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) of the trapezius muscle. To assess whether ERD reflects excitability of the i-CST, a correlation analysis between between MEP amplitudes and ipsilateral ERD was performed., Methods: Experiment 1 consisted of a motor execution task during which 10 healthy volunteers performed elevations of the shoulder girdle or finger pinching while a 128-channel EEG was recorded. Experiment 2 consisted of a motor imagery task during which 16 healthy volunteers imagined shoulder girdle elevations or finger pinching while an EEG was recorded; the participants simultaneously received randomly timed, single-pulse TMS to the ipsilateral primary motor cortex. The spatial pattern and amplitude of ERD and the amplitude of the agonist muscle's TMS-induced MEPs were analyzed., Results: ERDs occurred bilaterally during both execution and imagery of shoulder girdle elevations, but were lateralized to the contralateral hemisphere during finger pinching. We found that trapezius MEPs increased during motor imagery of shoulder elevations and correlated with ipsilateral ERD amplitudes., Conclusions: Ipsilateral ERD during execution and imagery of shoulder girdle elevations appears to reflect the excitability of uncrossed pathways projecting to the shoulder muscles. As such, ipsilateral ERD could be used for neurofeedback training of shoulder movement, aiming at reanimation of the i-CST.

Excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) of 5-cyano-2-naphthol (5CN2) and 5,8-dicyano-2-naphthol (DCN2) in three different protic ionic liquids (PILs), triethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([N 222 H][CF 3 SO 3 ]), triethylammonium methanesulfonate ([N 222 H][CH 3 SO 3 ]), and triethylammonium trifluoroacetate ([N 222 H][CF 3 COO]), was studied by time-resolved fluorescence. In [N 222 H][CF 3 SO 3 ], both 5CN2 and DCN2 showed fluorescence only from ROH* (normal form of substituted naphthol in the excited states), indicating that no ESPT occurred in [N 222 H][CF 3 SO 3 ]. For 5CN2 in [N 222 H][CH 3 SO 3 ], fluorescence bands from ROH* and RO - * (anionic form of substituted naphthol in the excited states) were observed, indicating that 5CN2 could dissociate proton to surrounding solvents and form RO - *. More interestingly, 5CN2 in [N 222 H][CF 3 COO] and DCN2 in [N 222 H][CH 3 SO 3 ] and [N 222 H][CF 3 COO] showed an anomalous fluorescence band around 470 nm (5CN2) or around 520 nm (DCN2) which has not been reported previously. The kinetics of each fluorescent component of 5CN2 and DCN2 was analyzed on the basis of the time profile of fluorescence intensity. Plausible ESPT schemes of 5CN2 and DCN2 were discussed on the basis of the kinetics and the basicity of anion in PILs.

Semi-dwarf traits have been widely introgressed into cereal crops to improve lodging resistance. In sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), four major unlinked dwarfing genes, Dw1-Dw4, have been introduced to reduce plant height, and among them, Dw3 and Dw1 have been cloned. Dw3 encodes a gene involved in auxin transport, whereas, Dw1 was recently isolated and identified as a gene encoding a protein of unknown function. In this study, we show that DW1 is a novel component of brassinosteroid (BR) signaling. Sorghum possessing the mutated allele of Dw1 (dw1), showed similar phenotypes to rice BR-deficient mutants, such as reduced lamina joint bending, attenuated skotomorphogenesis, and insensitivity against feedback regulation of BR-related genes. Furthermore, DW1 interacted with a negative regulator of BR signaling, BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE 2 (BIN2), and inhibited its nuclear localization, indicating that DW1 positively regulates BR signaling by inhibiting the function of BIN2. In contrast to rice and wheat breeding which used gibberellin (GA) deficiency to reduce plant height, sorghum breeding modified auxin and BR signaling. This difference may result from GA deficiency in rice and wheat does not cause deleterious side effects on plant morphology, whereas in sorghum it leads to abnormal culm bending.

Sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) exhibits various color changes in injured leaves in response to cutting stress. Here, we aimed to identify key genes for the light brown and dark brown color variations in tan-colored injured leaves of sorghum. For this purpose, sorghum M36001 (light brown injured leaves), Nakei-MS3B (purple), and a progeny, #7 (dark brown), from Nakei-MS3B × M36001, were used. Accumulated pigments were detected by using high-performance liquid chromatography: M36001 accumulated only apigenin in its light brown leaves; #7 accumulated both luteolin and a small amount of apigenin in its dark brown leaves, and Nakei-MS3B accumulated 3-deoxyanthocyanidins (apigeninidin and luteolinidin) in its purple leaves. Apigenin or luteolin glucoside derivatives were also accumulated, in different proportions. Differentially expressed genes before and after cutting stress were identified by using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). Integration of our metabolic and RNA-seq analyses suggested that expression of only flavone synthase II (FNSII) led to the synthesis of apigenin in M36001, expression of both FNSII and flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase (F3'H) led to the synthesis of apigenin and luteolin in #7, and expression of both flavanone 4-reductase and F3'H led to the synthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins in Nakei-MS3B. These results suggest that expression of FNSII is related to the synthesis of flavones (apigenin and luteolin) and the expression level of F3'H is related to the balance of apigenin and luteolin. Expression of FNSII and F3'H is thus associated with dark or light brown coloration in tan-colored injured leaves of sorghum.

Semi-dwarfing genes have contributed to enhanced lodging resistance, resulting in increased crop productivity. In the history of grain sorghum breeding, the spontaneous mutation, dw1 found in Memphis in 1905, was the first widely used semi-dwarfing gene. Here, we report the identification and characterization of Dw1. We performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis and cloning, and revealed that Dw1 encodes a novel uncharacterized protein. Knockdown or T-DNA insertion lines of orthologous genes in rice and Arabidopsis also showed semi-dwarfism similar to that of a nearly isogenic line (NIL) carrying dw1 (NIL-dw1) of sorghum. A histological analysis of the NIL-dw1 revealed that the longitudinal parenchymal cell lengths of the internode were almost the same between NIL-dw1 and wildtype, while the number of cells per internode was significantly reduced in NIL-dw1. NIL-dw1dw3, carrying both dw1 and dw3 (involved in auxin transport), showed a synergistic phenotype. These observations demonstrate that the dw1 reduced the cell proliferation activity in the internodes, and the synergistic effect of dw1 and dw3 contributes to improved lodging resistance and mechanical harvesting.

Background: SWEET is a newly identified family of sugar transporters. Although SWEET transporters have been characterized by using Arabidopsis and rice, very little knowledge of sucrose accumulation in the stem region is available, as these model plants accumulate little sucrose in their stems. To elucidate the expression of key SWEET genes involved in sucrose accumulation of sorghum, we performed transcriptome profiling by RNA-seq, categorization using phylogenetic trees, analysis of chromosomal synteny, and comparison of amino acid sequences between SIL-05 (a sweet sorghum) and BTx623 (a grain sorghum)., Results: We identified 23 SWEET genes in the sorghum genome. In the leaf, SbSWEET8-1 was highly expressed and was grouped in the same clade as AtSWEET11 and AtSWEET12 that play a role in the efflux of photosynthesized sucrose. The key genes in sucrose synthesis (SPS3) and that in another step of sugar transport (SbSUT1 and SbSUT2) were also highly expressed, suggesting that sucrose is newly synthesized and actively exported from the leaf. In the stem, SbSWEET4-3 was uniquely highly expressed. SbSWEET4-1, SbSWEET4-2, and SbSWEET4-3 were categorized into the same clade, but their tissue specificities were different, suggesting that SbSWEET4-3 is a sugar transporter with specific roles in the stem. We found a putative SWEET4-3 ortholog in the corresponding region of the maize chromosome, but not the rice chromosome, suggesting that SbSWEET4-3 was copied after the branching of sorghum and maize from rice. In the panicle from the heading through to 36 days afterward, SbSWEET2-1 and SbSWEET7-1 were expressed and grouped in the same clade as rice OsSWEET11/Xa13 that is essential for seed development. SbSWEET9-3 was highly expressed in the panicle only just after heading and was grouped into the same clade as AtSWEET8/RPG1 that is essential for pollen viability. Five of 23 SWEET genes had SNPs that caused nonsynonymous amino acid substitutions between SIL-05 and BTx623., Conclusions: We determined the key SWEET genes for technological improvement of sorghum in the production of biofuels: SbSWEET8-1 for efflux of sucrose from the leaf; SbSWEET4-3 for unloading sucrose from the phloem in the stem; SbSWEET2-1 and SbSWEET7-1 for seed development; SbSWEET9-3 for pollen nutrition.

Upon wounding or pathogen invasion, leaves of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] plants with the P gene turn purple, whereas leaves with the recessive allele turn brown or tan. This purple phenotype is determined by the production of two 3-deoxyanthocyanidins, apigeninidin and luteolinidin, which are not produced by the tan-phenotype plants. Using map-based cloning in progeny from a cross between purple Nakei-MS3B (PP) and tan Greenleaf (pp) cultivars, we isolated this gene, which was located in a 27-kb genomic region around the 58.1 Mb position on chromosome 6. Four candidate genes identified in this region were similar to the maize leucoanthocyanidin reductase gene. None of them was expressed before wounding, and only the Sb06g029550 gene was induced in both cultivars after wounding. The Sb06g029550 protein was detected in Nakei-MS3B, but only slightly in Greenleaf, in which it may be unstable because of a Cys252Tyr substitution. A recombinant Sb06g029550 protein had a specific flavanone 4-reductase activity, and converted flavanones (naringenin or eriodictyol) to flavan-4-ols (apiforol or luteoforol) in vitro Our data indicate that the Sb06g029550 gene is involved in the 3-deoxyanthocyanidin synthesis pathway., (Copyright © 2016 Kawahigashi et al.)

Hybrid vigor (heterosis) has been used as a breeding technique for crop improvement to achieve enhanced biomass production, but the physiological mechanisms underlying heterosis remain poorly understood. In this study, to find a clue to the enhancement of biomass production by heterosis, we systemically evaluated the effect of heterosis on the growth rate and photosynthetic efficiency in sorghum hybrid [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench cv. Tentaka] and its parental lines (restorer line and maintainer line). The final biomass of Tentaka was 10-14 times greater than that of the parental lines grown in an experimental field, but the relative growth rate during the vegetative growth stage did not differ. Tentaka exhibited a relatively enlarged leaf area with lower leaf nitrogen content per leaf area (Narea). When the plants were grown hydroponically at different N levels, daily CO2 assimilation per leaf area (A) increased with Narea, and the ratio of A to Narea (N-use efficiency) was higher in the plants grown at low N levels but not different between Tentaka and the parental lines. The relationships between the CO2 assimilation rate, the amounts of photosynthetic enzymes, including ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and pyruvate phosphate dikinase, Chl and Narea did not differ between Tentaka and the parental lines. Thus, Tentaka tended to exhibit enlargement of leaf area with lower N content, leading to a higher N-use efficiency for CO2 assimilation, but the photosynthetic properties did not differ. Robotics is an emerging field in rehabilitation medicine. Robots have the potential to complement traditional clinical assessments because they can measure functions more precisely and quantitatively than current clinical assessments. We present a patient with a proximal humeral fracture whose recovery process was evaluated with an exoskeleton robotic device. The patient, a 34-year-old woman, suffered a left proximal humeral fracture while snowboarding. She is an occupational therapist and is the first author of this study. With conservative therapy, fracture union was seen on X-ray at 6 weeks post-injury. At that time, the patient was permitted to move her left upper limb actively within the tolerance of pain. We assessed the function of the injured upper limb at 6, 7, and 12 weeks post-injury with the KINARM exoskeleton robotic device and with conventional clinical measures. The active range of motion and the muscle strength of the left shoulder improved over time. Using robotic assessment, the precise movement profiles, position sense, and functional ability of both arms were quantified and also showed progressive improvement over time. Assessment with a robotic device of the recovery process after proximal humeral fracture allowed quantification of functional impairments that could not be felt subjectively nor identified with conventional clinical assessments.

When we learn a novel task, the motor system needs to acquire both feedforward and feedback control. Currently, little is known about how the learning of these two mechanisms relate to each other. In the present study, we tested whether feedforward and feedback control need to be learned separately, or whether they are learned as common mechanism when a new control policy is acquired. Participants were trained to reach to two lateral and one central target in an environment with mirror (left-right)-reversed visual feedback. One group was allowed to make online movement corrections, whereas the other group only received visual information after the end of the movement. Learning of feedforward control was assessed by measuring the accuracy of the initial movement direction to lateral targets. Feedback control was measured in the responses to sudden visual perturbations of the cursor when reaching to the central target. Although feedforward control improved in both groups, it was significantly better when online corrections were not allowed. In contrast, feedback control only adaptively changed in participants who received online feedback and remained unchanged in the group without online corrections. Our findings suggest that when a new control policy is acquired, feedforward and feedback control are learned separately, and that there may be a trade-off in learning between feedback and feedforward controllers., (Copyright © 2015 the American Physiological Society.)

Background: Various robotic technologies have been developed recently for objective and quantitative assessment of movement. Among them, robotic measures derived from a reaching task in the KINARM Exoskeleton device are characterized by their potential to reveal underlying motor control in reaching movements. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical usefulness and validity of these robot-derived measures in hemiparetic stroke patients., Methods: Fifty-six participants with a hemiparetic arm due to chronic stroke were enrolled. The robotic assessment was performed using the Visually Guided Reaching (VGR) task in the KINARM Exoskeleton, which allows free arm movements in the horizontal plane. Twelve parameters were derived based on motor control theory. The following clinical assessments were also administered: the proximal upper limb section in the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA-UE(A)), the proximal upper limb part in the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS-KM), the Modified Ashworth Scale for the affected elbow flexor muscles (MAS elbow), and seven proximal upper limb tasks in the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT). To explore which robotic measures represent deficits of motor control in the affected arm, the VGR parameters in the paretic arm were compared with those in the non-paretic arm using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Then, to explore which VGR parameters were related to overall motor control regardless of the paresis, correlations between the paretic and non-paretic arms were examined. Finally, to investigate the relationships between the robotic measures and the clinical scales, correlations between the VGR parameters and clinical scales were investigated. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were used for all correlational analyses., Results: Eleven VGR parameters on the paretic side were significantly different from those on the non-paretic side with large effect sizes (|effect size| = 0.76-0.87). Ten VGR parameters correlated significantly with FMA-UE(A) (|r| = 0.32-0.60). Eight VGR parameters also showed significant correlations with SIAS-KM (|r| = 0.42-0.49), MAS elbow (|r| = 0.44-0.48), and the Functional Ability Scale of the WMFT (|r| = 0.52-0.64)., Conclusions: The robot-derived measures could successfully differentiate between the paretic arm and the non-paretic arm and were valid in comparison to the well-established clinical scales.

There is no consensus guidelines for treating duodenal variceal bleeding, which is a rare and life-threatening complication of portal hypertension. Here we report an exceedingly unusual case in a 9-year-old boy who had developed left-sided portal hypertension after surgical treatment for pancreatoblastoma followed by a duodenal variceal bleeding with massive melena, severe anemia (hemoglobin 4.5 g/dL) and hypovolemic shock. Emergency partial splenic arterial embolization (PSE) provided a reduction of variceal bleeding and improved blood pressure. Endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) was subsequently performed and stopped the duodenal variceal bleeding without the complication of portal vein thrombosis caused by injected sclerosant under hepatopetal flow. Our case demonstrates that emergency combined therapy with PSE and EIS can be considered as the therapeutic option for the management of left-sided portal hypertension-induced ectopic variceal bleedings in order to avoid the complication of portal embolization by EIS and provide effective hematostasis.
