The electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) charge breeder of the ReA post-accelerator, located at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (Michigan State University), started on-line operation in September 2015. Since then, the EBIT has delivered many pilot beams of stable isotopes and several rare-isotope beams. An operating aspect of the ReA EBIT is the breeding of high charge states to reach high reaccelerated beam energies. Efficiencies in single charge states of more than 20% were measured with ${^{39}\mathrm{K}}^{15+}$, ${^{85}\mathrm{Rb}}^{27+}$, ${^{47}\mathrm{K}}^{17+}$, and ${^{34}\mathrm{Ar}}^{15+}$. Producing high charge states demands long breeding times. This reduces the ejection frequency and, hence, increases the number of ions ejected per pulse. Another operating aspect is the ability to spread the distribution in time of the ejected ion pulses to lower the instantaneous rate delivered to experiments. Pulse widths were stretched from a natural $25\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ up to $\ensuremath{\sim}70\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ms}$. This publication reviews the progress of the ReA EBIT system over the years and presents the results of charge-breeding efficiency measurements and pulse-stretching tests obtained with stable- and rare-isotope beams. Studies performed with high sensitivity to identify and quantify stable-isotope contaminants from the EBIT are also presented, along with a novel method for purifying beams.

A Coulomb-excitation reorientation-effect measurement using the TIGRESS γ−ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF/ISAC II facility has permitted the determination of the 〈 2 1 + ‖ E 2 ˆ ‖ 2 1 + 〉 diagonal matrix element in 12C from particle−γ coincidence data and state-of-the-art no-core shell model calculations of the nuclear polarizability. The nuclear polarizability for the ground and first-excited (2 1 + ) states in 12C have been calculated using chiral NN N4LO500 and NN+3NF350 interactions, which show convergence and agreement with photo-absorption cross-section data. Predictions show a change in the nuclear polarizability with a substantial increase between the ground state and first excited 2 1 + state at 4.439 MeV. The polarizability of the 2 1 + state is introduced into the current and previous Coulomb-excitation reorientation-effect analyses of 12C. Spectroscopic quadrupole moments of Q S ( 2 1 + ) = + 0.053 ( 44 ) eb and Q S ( 2 1 + ) = + 0.08 ( 3 ) eb are determined, respectively, yielding a weighted average of Q S ( 2 1 + ) = + 0.071 ( 25 ) eb, in agreement with recent ab initio calculations. The present measurement confirms that the 2 1 + state of 12C is oblate and emphasizes the important role played by the nuclear polarizability in Coulomb-excitation studies of light nuclei.

The γ-ray tracking array GRETINA was coupled to the S800 magnetic spectrometer for spectroscopy with fast beams of rare isotopes at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory on the campus of Michigan State University. We describe the technical details of this powerful setup and report on GRETINA's performance achieved with source and in-beam measurements. The γ-ray multiplicity encountered in experiments with fast beams is usually low, allowing for a simplified and efficient treatment of the data in the γ-ray analysis in terms of Doppler reconstruction and spectral quality. The results reported in this work were obtained from GRETINA consisting of 8 detector modules hosting four high-purity germanium crystals each. Currently, GRETINA consists of 10 detector modules.

High precision measurements of the $ft$ values for superallowed Fermi $\beta$ transitions between $J^\pi~=~0^+$ isobaric analogue states allow for stringent tests of the electroweak interaction described by the Standard Model. These transitions provide an experimental probe of the Conserved-Vector-Current hypothesis, enable the most precise determination of the up-down ($V_{ud}$) element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix, and allow one to set stringent limits on the existence of scalar currents in the weak interaction. An extensive program of superallowed branching-ratio and half-life measurements at TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility has covered the full range of superallowed emitters, from the lightest case, $^{10}$C, to the heaviest case for which precision data are currently available, $^{74}$Rb. These experiments have been performed using a 4$\pi$ continuous-flow gas proportional $\beta$ counter, the 8$\pi$ $\gamma$-ray spectrometer, and, most recently, the new high-efficiency GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer. In this paper, recent highlights from the superallowed Fermi $\beta$ decay program at TRIUMF will be summarized, including high-precision half-life measurements for all three of the lightest superallowed emitters, $^{10}$C, $^{14}$O, and $^{18}$Ne, with the greatest sensitivity to a potential weak scalar current contribution, as well as high-precision branching-ratio measurements for the heavy superallowed emitters $^{62}$Ga and $^{74}$Rb.

Twenty two patients over the age of 40 with stable spinal cord damage underwent overnight sleep studies to investigate the prevalence of sleep apnoea. Ten patients had some evidence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Hypoxic events were scored as number of dips of SaO2 more than 4% below the preceding 10 minute average (> 4% SaO2 dip rate). All the patients had more than five such dips per hour and six had clearly abnormal dip rates of more than 15 per hour. Two other patients had dip rates above 10 per hour without apnoeas but periods of central hypoventilation mainly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. OSA appears to be more common in older patients with spinal cord injury than in the general population. Possible relevant factors include patient selection, reduced ventilatory function secondary to spinal cord damage, sleep posture and medication.

There is significant evidence supporting the existence of deformed ground states within the neutron-rich N≈20 neon, sodium, and magnesium isotopes that make up what is commonly called the "island of inversion." However, the rotational band structures, which are a characteristic fingerprint of a rigid nonspherical shape, have yet to be observed. In this work, we report on a measurement and analysis of the yrast (lowest lying) rotational band in Mg32 up to spin I=6+ produced in a two-step projectile fragmentation reaction and observed using the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking detector array, GRETINA (γ-ray energy tracking in-beam nuclear array). Large-scale shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U-MIX effective interaction show excellent agreement with the new data. The present work has used microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition to generate suitable isotopically labelled carbonaceous deposits on the surface of Pile Grade A graphite for use as surrogates for studying the behaviour of the deposits observed on irradiated graphite extracted from UK Magnox reactors. These deposits have been shown elsewhere to contain an enhanced concentration of 14C compared to the bulk graphite. A combination of Raman spectroscopy, ion beam milling with scanning electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry were used to determine topography and internal morphology in the formed deposits. Direct comparison was made against deposits found on irradiated graphite samples trepanned from a Magnox reactor core and showed a good similarity in appearance. This work suggests that the microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition technique is of value in producing simulant carbon deposits, being of sufficiently representative morphology for use in non-radioactive surrogate studies of post-disposal behaviour of 14C-containing deposits on some irradiated Magnox reactor graphite.

International audience; Analyses of data from both deep inelastic reactions at Argonne National Laboratory and single-and multiple-particle knockout reactions at Michigan State University revealed new gamma-ray transitions in even-even Ni-66,68,70,72(38,40,42,44) and in Co-67(40) that provide strong evidence for multiple shape coexistence at N = 38 and 40 and deep prolate minima in Ni-70(42) and isotonic Cu-71(42). A new transition at 642 keV is proposed for Ni-66 as the prolate 2(+) to 0(+) transition. Two new transitions in Ni-72 at 915 and 1225 keV were identified in the knock-out reaction study and could represent de-population of prolate states. Taken together with recent theoretical work using the Monte Carlo shell model, a well defined region of shape coexistence can be seen existing precisely between 38

The structure of the neutron-rich silicon isotopes Si36,38,40 was studied by one-neutron and one-proton knockout reactions at intermediate beam energies. We construct level schemes for the knockout residues Si35,37,39 and Al35,37,39 and compare knockout cross sections to the predictions of an eikonal model in conjunction with large-scale shell-model calculations. The agreement of these calculations with the present experiment lends support to the microscopic explanation of the enhanced collectivity in the region of Si42. We also present an empirical method for reproducing the observed low-momentum tails in the parallel momentum distributions of knockout residues.

International audience; A program of high-precision half-life and branching-ratio measurements for superallowed Fermi emitters is being carried out at TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility. Recent half-life measurements for the superallowed decays of 14O, 18Ne, and 26Alm, as well as branching-ratio measurements for 26Alm and 74Rb are reported. These results provide demanding tests of the Standard Model and the theoretical isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections in superallowed Fermi decays.

Long-lived isomers in 212Bi have been studied following 238U projectile fragmentation at 670 MeV per nucleon. The fragmentation products were injected as highly charged ions into the GSI storage ring, giving access to masses and half-lives. While the excitation energy of the first isomer of 212Bi was confirmed, the second isomer was observed at 1478(30) keV, in contrast to the previously accepted value of >1910 keV. It was also found to have an extended Lorentz-corrected in-ring halflife >30 min, compared to 7.0(3) min for the neutral atom. Both the energy and half-life differences can be understood as being due a substantial, though previously unrecognised, internal decay branch for neutral atoms. Earlier shell-model calculations are now found to give good agreement with the isomer excitation energy. Furthermore, these and new calculations predict the existence of states at slightly higher energy that could facilitate isomer de-excitation studies., published in PRL 110, 122502

The low-spin level scheme of ${}^{68}$Ni was investigated following two-neutron-knockout and multinucleon-transfer reactions. The energy of the first excited state was determined to be ${E}_{x}({0}_{2}^{+})=1603.5(3)$ keV. Relative $B(E2)$ transition probabilities were deduced and compared with shell-model calculations using several modern effective interactions. Theory reproduces the data well, but indicates substantial mixing of multi-particle, multi-hole configurations for the lowest observed ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states.

Nucleon transfer experiments have in recent years begun to be exploited in the study of nuclei far from stability, using radioactive beams in inverse kinematics. New techniques are still being developed in order to perform these experiments. The present experiment is designed to study the odd-odd nucleus Na which has a high density of states and therefore requires gamma-ray detection to distinguish between them. The experiment employed an intense beam of up to 3×10 pps of Na at 5.0 MeV/nucleon from the ISAC-II facility at triumf. The new silicon array SHARC was used for the first time and was coupled to the segmented clover gamma-ray array TIGRESS. A novel thin plastic scintillator detector was employed at zero degrees to identify and reject reactions occurring on the carbon component of the (CD) target. The efficiency of the background rejection using this detector is described with respect to the proton and gamma-ray spectra from the (d,p) reaction. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

International audience; Two rotational bands have been identified and characterized in the proton-magic N = Z + 1 nucleus 57 Ni. These bands complete the systematics of well- and superdeformed rotational bands in the light nickel isotopes starting from doubly-magic 56 Ni to 60 Ni. High-spin states in 57 Ni have been produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction 28 Si(32 S, 2p1n) 57 Ni and studied with the γ-ray detection array Gammasphere operated in conjunction with detectors for evaporated light charged particles and neutrons. The features of the rotational bands in 57 Ni are compared to those of neighbouring isotopes and interpreted by means of configurationdependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The two observed high-spin bands are considered signature partners and assigned to configurations with one 1g 9/2 proton and one 1g 9/2 neutron, resulting in an unambiguous understanding of the energetically favoured signature α = −1/2 band but a somewhat less satisfactory description of the signature α = +1/2 band.

International audience; TIGRESS is a new generation gamma-ray spectrometer designed for use with radioactive beams from ISAC. This paper gives an overwiew of the project and presents results from the first radioactive beam experiment with TIGRESS, the Coulomb excitation of 20,21Na.

International audience; An experiment was performed to extend the knowledge of excited states in neutron-deficient Ca isotopes. In particular, excited states in $^{36}$Ca were searched for to allow for a comparison with its stable mirror nucleus, $^{36}$S. Secondary beams of $^{37}$Ca and $^{36}$Ca were produced by fragmentation of a primary $^{40}$Ca beam with an energy of 95 · A MeV on the SISSI target at GANIL. A variety of nuclei around $^{36}$Ca has been produced in a secondary Be target by neutron and proton-removal at beam energies around 61 · A MeV. The produced nuclei were identified using the spectrometer SPEG, and prompt $\gamma$ rays were measured with the Château de Cristal. A preliminary value for the energy of the first $2^+$ state of $^{36}$Ca has been determined.

A beam of 28 MeV He-8 particles with an average intensity 2 x 10(5) ions s(-1), produced by the SPIRAL facility at GANIL, was used to initiate fusion-evaporation reactions in thick targets of Pb-201 and Bi-209. Excited states of Po-212 and At-213 were populated in (He-8,4n) reactions. The emitted gamma-rays were detected using the EXOGAM array composed of four Compton suppressed germanium Clover detectors in a close geometry configuration. Preliminary results show that Po-212 has been populated to high spin (I similar or equal to 14) with a significantly increased yield compared with our previous He-8 beam experiment. An apparently increased relative population of states up to 12(+) was observed compared with published results from a Pb-208(Be-9,alpha n)(212) Po reaction at 48 MeV. Evidence is presented for a previously unreported de-excitation pathway: 69 keV (13(-) -> 12(+)). States up to I-pi = (39/2(-)) have also been observed in At-213.

The s-wave neutron fraction of the 0 + levels in 12Be has been investigated for the first time through the 11Be( d , p ) transfer reaction using a 5 A MeV 11Be beam at TRIUMF, Canada. The reaction populated all the known bound states of 12Be. The ground state s-wave spectroscopic factor was determined to be 0.28 − 0.07 + 0.03 while that for the long-lived 0 2 + excited state was 0.73 − 0.40 + 0.27 . This observation, together with the smaller effective separation energy indicates enhanced probability for an extended density tail beyond the 10Be core for the 0 2 + excited state compared to the ground state.
