Phenotypic flexibility (reversible phenotypic change) enables organisms to couple internal, ontogenetic responses with external, environmental cues. Phenotypic flexibility also provides organisms with the capacity to buffer stereotypical internal, developmental processes from unpredictable external, ecological events. Echinoids exhibit dramatic phenotypic flexibility in response to variation in exogenous nutrient supplies. The extent to which echinoids display this flexibility has been explored incompletely and research hitherto has been conducted predominantly on larval structures and morphologies. We investigated experimentally the extent to which the primordial juvenile, the developing rudiment, can exhibit the first phase in phenotypic flexibility among individuals. We report for the first time on rudiment regression and complete resorption as a response to starvation during larval development in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O.F. Muller, 1776) and identify a developmental 'window of opportunity' within which this can occur. Based on our observations and previous suggestions, we speculate that sea urchin rudiments might provide means of buffering development during unfavorable conditions. Key words: canalization, development, ecology, evolution, flexibility, ontogeny, phylogeny, phenotypic plasticity, sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. ObjectivesWe aimed to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac diagnostic testing and practice and to assess its impact in different regions in Europe.MethodsThe online survey organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency Division of Human Health collected information on changes in cardiac imaging procedural volumes between March 2019 and March/April 2020. Data were collected from 909 centres in 108 countries.ResultsCentres in Northern and Southern Europe were more likely to cancel all outpatient activities compared with Western and Eastern Europe. There was a greater reduction in total procedure volumes in Europe compared with the rest of the world in March 2020 (45% vs 41%, p=0.003), with a more marked reduction in Southern Europe (58%), but by April 2020 this was similar in Europe and the rest of the world (69% vs 63%, p=0.261). Regional variations were apparent between imaging modalities, but the largest reductions were in Southern Europe for nearly all modalities. In March 2020, location in Southern Europe was the only independent predictor of the reduction in procedure volume. However, in April 2020, lower gross domestic product and higher COVID-19 deaths were the only independent predictors.ConclusionThe first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on care of patients with cardiac disease, with substantial regional variations in Europe. This has potential long-term implications for patients and plans are required to enable the diagnosis of non-COVID-19 conditions during the ongoing pandemic.

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known.ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison.ResultsProcedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April2020.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Aim: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons typically spend over 20 h in the operating theatre every week. Many of their procedures involve the use of powered bone and tooth cutting devices, which generate potentially harmful levels of noise. Prolonged exposure to loud noises is associated with hearing loss, increased serum cortisol levels, detrimental cardiovascular outcomes, and poor task performance. This study explores the noise generation of common powered tooth and bone cutting devices in a theatre setting. Materials and methods: Both compressed air and electric devices were tested. For compressed air devices three burs were tested – jet, round and fissure. Results: The study found that at the proximity of the patient and surgeon, all tested devices generated noise above the safe threshold of 75 decibels. At the distance of 1 m or more (corresponding to the anaesthetist and scout nursing staff), the Surgairtome and oscillating saw were the only powered osteotomy devices below the safe noise level. Conclusions: This study explores the impact of noise generation from powered osteotomy devices. This may have health implications for theatre staff, the surgeon, anaesthetist, and the patient. Advanced Photovoltaics ,New Materials, Cells and Modules - Abstract
24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 313-316, A solution-based, anti-reflective coating, SOLARCTM coating with improved performance is developed and tested for durability in our laboratory. The SOLARCTM coating formulation is prepared by synthesizing a transparent polymer in a solvent mixture, which is then deposited on glass by using a non-vacuum coating technique such as spray, roller, dip, curtain, slot-die and spin-on. A 3.5-4.2% transmission gain over 350-800 nm and a 2-2.5% transmission gain over 800-2500 nm are obtained by coating commercial PV-grade sodalime glass with SOLARCTM on one side of the glass. A 7.2- 8.5% transmission gain over the visible range and 4.0-6.0% gain over the IR region are obtained by coating both sides of the glass. Transmittance gain is maximized by targetting refractive index of the coating at 1.23 and thickness of the coating at one-quarter of a wavelength of incident light. The coating is applied onto the glass surface at room temperature followed by a thermal bake. The coating showed excellent performance on industry standard durability tests.

NEAR infrared reflectance spectroscopy ,LUPINES ,RAINBOW trout ,ONCORHYNCHUS ,FISH feeds ,CALORIC content of foods - Abstract
This study examined the potential of using near infrared spectroscopy ( NIRS) to predict the nutrient composition, energy density and the digestible protein and digestible energy values of lupin kernel meals when fed to rainbow trout. A series of 136 lupin kernel meals were assessed for their protein and energy digestibilities using the diet-substitution approach in a series of 10 experiments over a 6-year period from 2002 to 2008. Two reference diets were also included in each experiment. Minimal variance in the digestibility parameters of both reference diets was observed among the experiments ensuring that there was a high degree of robustness in the across-experiment evaluations. The same lupin kernel meal samples were also scanned using a diode array near infrared spectrophotometer ( DA- NIRS). The spectra obtained by the DA- NIRS were chemometrically calibrated against both the chemical composition and the digestible value data using multivariate analysis software. The cross validation tests used in this study provide a valid indication of the potential to predict the nutrient composition, energy value and digestible protein and energy values of the lupin kernel meals as used in diets for rainbow trout. That the standard errors of cross validation ( SECV) of the parameters investigated were generally commensurate with the cross trial variation seen in the reference sample indicating robust calibrations for the two target parameters of digestible protein and digestible energy. Therefore this study demonstrates that within one raw material type that not only does significant variability in the digestible value of the raw materials exist, but that it is possible to use NIRS technology to provide rapid estimates of the digestible value of those raw materials in near real-time. Two experiments were conducted to examine critical thresholds to fishmeal inclusion in diets for barramundi and also the suitability of a range of different raw materials as alternative protein sources for this species. The first experiment used two diets formulated to the same digestible protein and energy specifications, which were then used to create a series of blended experimental diets that varied in fishmeal content from 0 to 770 g kg. An additional diet containing sodium sulfamerazine was used as a negative control. Feed intake was unaffected with diets containing as little as 11% fishmeal, although broken-line regression suggests that an inclusion of ∼150 g kg fishmeal is a more likely threshold value. In a second experiment, a further series of diets was formulated for juvenile barramundi according to digestible protein and energy specifications predicted by existing bio-energetic models. Each of the test raw materials was substituted for fishmeal at either 200 or 300 g kg (dependent on formulation or extrusion limitations), and two additional diets were included to examine two practical formulations. A diet with only fishmeal as the protein source was included as a reference. Each diet was produced using an APV19 twin-screw extruder and then vacuum infused with the specified fish oil allocation. Each of the diet pellets produced was also characterized for a range of physical parameters. Fish of an initial weight of 70 ± 0.6 g fish were randomly allocated across 24 tanks with three replicates per treatment. After 6 weeks, average weight gain across all treatments was 73 ± 12.7 g fish and feed conversion across all treatments averaged 0.94 ± 0.08 g fish. None of the diets using alternative raw materials had poorer growth or feed conversion than the fishmeal-based reference diet. The inclusion of either the lupin kernel meals or canola meal significantly improved both weight gain and feed conversion compared to the reference diet. The results from this study demonstrate that there is clear potential to replace the fishmeal content of diets for barramundi without loss of fish performance, up to and including diets with as little as 150 g kg fishmeal inclusion. This study compared the effect of increasing dietary inclusion of soybean, narrow-leaf lupin or yellow lupin kernel meals when fed to rainbow trout. Each meal was formulated into a test diet to create a series of inclusion levels of 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 g kg. Each diet was formulated to the same digestible protein and energy specifications. The diets were fed to apparent satiety to 30.0 ± 0.71 g rainbow trout for 28 days. After this period, fish in the reference (0 g kg) treatment attained a weight of 93.2 g. Growth of the fish among the treatments was observed to be improved by the addition of either variety of lupin meal. In contrast, growth of fish fed the soybean meal was equivalent to that of the 0 g kg fish meal reference, but was poorer at the 400 g kg inclusion level. Feed intake with the lupin meals was marginally improved with lupin inclusion, but at the higher soybean meal inclusions, feed intake was reduced relative to the fish meal reference diet. The inclusion of the different grains also had significant effects on the physical properties of the pellets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of diets with varying docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) inclusion levels (1 g kg 3 g kg, 6 g kg, 10 g kg, 15 g kg and 18 g kg) were fed to juvenile barramundi ( Lates calcarifer) for 6 weeks. Two additional diets examined the addition of arachidonic acid (ARA; 20:4n-6) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) to the diets at 10 g kg when DHA was also included at 10 g kg. Fish were fed the diets on a pair-fed feeding regime to eliminate feed intake variability. Fish were weighed, and blood and tissue samples were collected after 6 weeks. Behavioural parameters were also assessed. Improvement in growth was seen with increasing inclusion of DHA up to a maximum at 10 g kg inclusion, albeit the response was minor. However, the addition of ARA to the diet reduced the growth response, while the addition of EPA improved the growth response. An improvement in feeding behaviour was also seen with increasing DHA up to a peak at 10 g kg, while those animals fed diets low in DHA showed increasingly cryptic behaviour. With the increasing inclusion of DHA, a range of pathologies were observed, but the addition of an EPA component to the diet limited these pathologies, while the addition of ARA made little improvement and in some cases exacerbated the pathologies. - Abstract
Background: Frontotemporal dementia-amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FTD-ALS) is a heritable form of FTD, but the gene(s) responsible for the majority of autosomal dominant FTD-ALS cases have yet to be found. Previous studies have identified a region on chromosome 9p that is associated with FTD and ALS.Methods: The authors report the clinical, volumetric MRI, neuropathological and genetic features of a new chromosome 9p-linked FTD-ALS family, VSM-20.Results: Ten members of family VSM-20 displayed heterogeneous clinical phenotypes of isolated behavioural-variant FTD (bvFTD), ALS or a combination of the two. Parkinsonism was common, with one individual presenting with a corticobasal syndrome. Analysis of structural MRI scans from five affected family members revealed grey- and white-matter loss that was most prominent in the frontal lobes, with mild parietal and occipital lobe atrophy, but less temporal lobe atrophy than in 10 severity-matched sporadic bvFTD cases. Autopsy in three family members showed a consistent and unique subtype of FTLD-TDP pathology. Genome-wide linkage analysis conclusively linked family VSM-20 to a 28.3 cM region between D9S1808 and D9S251 on chromosome 9p, reducing the published minimal linked region to a 3.7 Mb interval. Genomic sequencing and expression analysis failed to identify mutations in the 10 known and predicted genes within this candidate region, suggesting that next-generation sequencing may be needed to determine the mutational mechanism associated with chromosome 9p-linked FTD-ALS.Conclusions: Family VSM-20 significantly reduces the region linked to FTD-ALS on chromosome 9p. A distinct pattern of brain atrophy and neuropathological findings may help to identify other families with FTD-ALS caused by this genetic abnormality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Several dietary strategies to ameliorate poorer growth observed to occur at temperatures above the upper thermal optima were examined with juvenile barramundi ( Lates calcarifer). A reference (REF) and three experimental diets, one with an increased protein to energy ratio (PRO), another with an increased level of the amino acid histidine (HIS) and a third with supplementation of dietary nucleotides (NUC), were each fed to fish at either 30 °C or 37 °C for a 28-day period. Growth was affected by both temperature and diet. Fish fed the PRO diet at 30 °C grew fastest, but not faster than those fed the NUC diet at the same temperature. The addition of the amino acid histidine to the diet did not improve growth rates at either temperature. At water temperatures of 37 °C, only the fish fed the PRO diet had growth rates equivalent to those of fish at the 30 °C temperatures. Other key factors including feed intake, feed conversion rate, nutrient and energy retention and plasma enzymology were also all affected by temperature and diet. This study shows that the use of a diet with an increased protein to energy ratio provides significant benefits in terms of reducing the impact of growth retardation at higher temperatures. This study examined the utilization efficiencies of three diets when fed to rainbow trout in a 28-day growth study. Each of the diets was fed at one of three ration levels, and an additional starved treatment was also included. The diets differed by an increasing concentration of lupin ( Lupinus angustifolius cv. Myallie) kernel meal (MKM) inclusion. Two lupin kernel meal inclusion levels of 15% (MKM15%) and 30% (MKM30%) were studied. The diets were formulated to equivalent digestible protein and energy specifications based upon the predetermined digestibility values for each of the ingredients used. There were no significant differences in digestible protein level among the diets. However, a significantly higher level of digestible energy of both MKM diets was measured, as well as a significantly higher level of digestible phosphorus in the MKM30% diet. No significant differences between the diets were observed with respect the utilization of dietary digestible energy. Over the full data range, the energy utilization efficiency was described by the linear equation of; y = 0.747 x − 26.174, R
2 = 0.985. Efficiency of protein utilization over lower digestible protein intake levels was also linear ( y = 0.599 x − 0.142, R2 = 0.905), but over the full range was better described by a nonlinear function. The comparison of the three diets in this study shows that the dietary inclusion of lupin kernel had no significant effect on the gain of either protein or lipid energy relative to protein or lipid energy intake, respectively. Protein energy use efficiency constants varied depending on the feed intake level, but were not significantly affected by diet type. The efficiency of use of lipid energy for lipid energy retention was also not affected by diet type. The findings of this study demonstrate that the inclusion of lupin kernel meal, at up to 30% of the diet, does not affect the ability of rainbow trout to utilize the dietary digestible protein and energy of diet in which it is included. Osteolytic lesions of the mandible are common, and there are two important differential diagnoses that must be considered: medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In patients with a history of taking antiresorptive medication as well as risk factors for neoplasia it can be difficult to differentiate between the two. We describe two cases in both of which a mandibular osteolytic lesion was inadequately identified as either MRONJ or SCC because of confusing clinical and histopathological features. We also reviewed relevant publications to identify similar cases. Here we discuss our clinical dilemma when faced with two different conditions that present with similar clinical and histopathological features. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microbiology ,QR1-502 - Abstract
Abstract Expressing proteins of interest as fusions to proteins of the bacterial envelope is a powerful technique with many biotechnological and medical applications. Autotransporters have recently emerged as a good tool for bacterial surface display. These proteins are composed of an N-terminal signal peptide, followed by a passenger domain and a translocator domain that mediates the outer membrane translocation of the passenger. The natural passenger domain of autotransporters can be replaced by heterologous proteins that become displayed at the bacterial surface by the translocator domain. The simplicity and versatility of this system has made it very attractive and it has been used to display functional enzymes, vaccine antigens as well as polypeptides libraries. The recent advances in the study of the translocation mechanism of autotransporters have raised several controversial issues with implications for their use as display systems. These issues include the requirement for the displayed polypeptides to remain in a translocation-competent state in the periplasm, the requirement for specific signal sequences and "autochaperone" domains, and the influence of the genetic background of the expression host strain. It is therefore important to better understand the mechanism of translocation of autotransporters in order to employ them to their full potential. This review will focus on the recent advances in the study of the translocation mechanism of autotransporters and describe practical considerations regarding their use for bacterial surface display.

Abstract: This paper provides a review of the state of the art of relevant work on the use of public mobile data networks for aircraft telemetry and control proposes. Moreover, it describes the characterisation for airborne uses of the public mobile data communication systems known broadly as 3G. The motivation for this study was to explore how this mature public communication systems could be used for aviation purposes. An experimental system was fitted to a light aircraft to record communication latency, line speed, RF level, packet loss and cell tower identifier. Communications was established using internet protocols and connection was made to a local server. The aircraft was flown in both remote and populous areas at altitudes up to 8500ft in a region located in South East Queensland, Australia. Results show that the average airborne RF levels are better than those on the ground by 21% and in the order of −77dbm. Latencies were in the order of 500ms (1/2 the latency of Iridium), an average download speed of 0.48Mb/s, average uplink speed of 0.85Mb/s, a packet of information loss of 6.5%. The maximum communication range was also observed to be 70km from a single cell station. The paper also describes possible limitations and utility of using such communications architecture for both manned and unmanned aircraft systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Hydrocarbon (i.e. oil) extraction, transport, consumption, and pollution occur daily in marine environments, threatening vulnerable natural resources, habitats, and biodiversity. However, threats of episodic oil spills to imperiled marine species are not as well-studied as more acute, readily apparent threats such as incidental capture in fisheries and habitat degradation. We performed a global review of spill incident databases to evaluate reported effects of oil spills on sea turtles, which are flagship species of the world’s oceans. Our goals were to (1) summarize available information about oil spills and their effects on sea turtles; (2) identify major knowledge gaps; and (3) provide recommendations related to oil spills and sea turtles for managers, researchers, and conservation groups around the world. Over 2000 oil spill incidents of variable magnitude (range: ~20 to >1 million barrels) have occurred worldwide in the past 60 yr in areas where sea turtles are found, but resulting effects on sea turtles have been reported in less than 2% of those incidents. Further, evidence indicates that most effects are related to heavy external oiling, while chemical effects of oil exposure have not been well defined. We recommend that, where available, resources be prioritized to document co-occurrence of turtles and oil, the degree and nature of oil exposure, and mortality and reproductive losses to individual sea turtles and their populations caused by spills and spill response activities. These data will best inform assessments of the extent and magnitude of adverse effects of oil spills on sea turtles.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which health care systems have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide necessary cardiac diagnostic services is unknown.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the pandemic on cardiac testing practices, volumes and types of diagnostic services, and perceived psychological stress to health care providers worldwide.METHODS: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations from baseline in cardiovascular diagnostic care at the pandemic's onset and 1 year later. Multivariable regression was used to determine factors associated with procedure volume recovery.RESULTS: Surveys were submitted from 669 centers in 107 countries. Worldwide reduction in cardiac procedure volumes of 64% from March 2019 to April 2020 recovered by April 2021 in high- and upper middle-income countries (recovery rates of 108% and 99%) but remained depressed in lower middle- and low-income countries (46% and 30% recovery). Although stress testing was used 12% less frequently in 2021 than in 2019, coronary computed tomographic angiography was used 14% more, a trend also seen for other advanced cardiac imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance; 22%-25% increases). Pandemic-related psychological stress was estimated to have affected nearly 40% of staff, impacting patient care at 78% of sites. In multivariable regression, only lower-income status and physicians' psychological stress were significant in predicting recovery of cardiac testing.CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac diagnostic testing has yet to recover to prepandemic levels in lower-income countries. Worldwide, the decrease in standard stress testing is offset by greater use of advanced cardiac imaging modalities. Pandemic-related psychological stress among providers is widespread and associated with poor recovery of cardiac testing.

Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Background: Ventilation heterogeneity (VH) is a feature of asthma and indicates small airway disease. Nuclear imaging methods assess VH, which can facilitate clinical diagnosis and further our understanding of disease aetiology., Objective: We sought to assess VH in severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) using ventilation/perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (V/P SPECT), and to assess its use as an objective test of the effect of biologic treatment for ventilation defects in SEA., Methods: Adults (≥18 y) with severe asthma were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional observational study. Participants underwent a clinical assessment and V/P SPECT CT using Technegas as the ventilation agent. Measures were repeated for a nested before-after treatment study in people with SEA commencing biologics., Results: A total of 62 participants with severe asthma were recruited. From this, 38 participants with SEA were included in the before-after study. The VH was associated with clinical variables such as lung function impairment and significantly improved after monoclonal antibody treatment in the severe asthma group. The changes in VH correlated with change in post bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV
1 ) %predicted (r = -0.503; P = .001) and post bronchodilator FEV1 /FVC (forced vital capacity) (r = -0.415; P = .01)., Conclusions: The VH is clinically significant, measurable, and treatable, which establishes VH as a treatable trait in severe asthma., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. - Abstract
Multiple studies have examined the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on coastal marsh shoreline erosion. Most studies have concluded that the spill increased shoreline erosion (linear retreat) in oiled marshes by ~ 100-200% for at least 2-3 years. However, two studies have called much of this prior research into question, due to potential study design flaws and confounding factors, primarily tropical cyclone influences and differential wave exposure between oiled (impact) and unoiled (reference) sites. Here we confirm that marsh erosion in our field experiment was substantially increased (112-233%) for 2 years in heavily oiled marsh after the spill, likely due to vegetation impacts and reduced soil shear strength attributed to the spill, rather than the influences of hurricanes or wave exposure variation. We discuss how our findings reinforce prior studies, including a wider-scale remote sensing analysis with similar study approach. We also show differences in the degree of erosion among oil spill cleanup treatments. Most importantly, we show that marsh restoration planting can drastically reduce oiled marsh erosion, and that the positive influences of planting can extend beyond the immediate impact of the spill., (© 2022. - Abstract
Marine oil spills continue to be a global issue, heightened by spill events such as the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the largest marine oil spill in US waters and among the largest worldwide, affecting over 1,000 km of sensitive wetland shorelines, primarily salt marshes supporting numerous ecosystem functions. To synthesize the effects of the oil spill on foundational vegetation species in the salt marsh ecosystem, Spartina alterniflora and Juncus roemerianus, we performed a meta-analysis using data from 10 studies and 255 sampling sites over seven years post-spill. We examined the hypotheses that the oil spill reduced plant cover, stem density, vegetation height, aboveground biomass, and belowground biomass, and tracked the degree of effects temporally to estimate recovery time frames. All plant metrics indicated impacts from oiling, with 20-100% maximum reductions depending on oiling level and marsh zone. Peak reductions of ~70-90% in total plant cover, total aboveground biomass, and belowground biomass were observed for heavily oiled sites at the marsh edge. Both Spartina and Juncus were impacted, with Juncus affected to a greater degree. Most plant metrics had recovery time frames of three years or longer, including multiple metrics with incomplete recovery over the duration of our data, at least seven years post-spill. Belowground biomass was particularly concerning, because it declined over time in contrast with recovery trends in most aboveground metrics, serving as a strong indicator of ongoing impact, limited recovery, and impaired resilience. We conclude that the Deepwater Horizon spill had multiyear impacts on salt marsh vegetation, with full recovery likely to exceed 10 years, particularly in heavily oiled marshes, where erosion may preclude full recovery. Vegetation impacts and delayed recovery is likely to have exerted substantial influences on ecosystem processes and associated species, especially along heavily oiled shorelines. Our synthesis affords a greater understanding of ecosystem impacts and recovery following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and informs environmental impact analysis, contingency planning, emergency response, damage assessment, and restoration efforts related to oil spills., (© 2021 The Authors. 48. Regional changes with global brain hypometabolism indicates a physiological triage phenomenon and can explain shared pathophysiological events in Alzheimer's & small vessel diseases and delirium.

- Abstract
While reduced global brain metabolism is known in aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD), small vessel disease (SVD) and delirium, explanation of regional brain metabolic (rBM) changes is a challenge. We hypothesized that this may be explained by "triage phenomenon", to preserve metabolic supply to vital brain areas. We studied changes in rBM in 69 patients with at least 5% decline in global brain metabolism during active lymphoma. There was significant decline in the rBM of the inferior parietal, precuneus, superior parietal, lateral occipital, primary visual cortices (P<0.001) and in the right lateral prefrontal cortex (P=0.01). Some areas showed no change; multiple areas had significantly increased rBM (e.g. medial prefrontal, anterior cingulate, pons, cerebellum and mesial temporal cortices; P<0.001). We conclude the existence of a physiological triage phenomenon and argue a new hypothetical model to explain the shared events in the pathophysiology of aging, AD, SVD and delirium., Competing Interests: None., (AJNMMI Copyright © 2021.)

- Abstract
Monoclonal antibody therapies are effective for many but not all people with severe asthma. Precision medicine guides treatment selection using biomarkers to select patients most likely to respond according to their inflammatory endotypes. However, when assessing response to treatment, greater precision is required. We report a case series describing treatment response to mepolizumab in four severe asthma patients, assessed by traditional methods and with objective ventilation/perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (V-P SPECT). In this series, patients with severe asthma received mepolizumab treatment with clinical outcomes recorded at commencement and at approximately 16 weeks post-treatment initiation. V-P SPECT imaging was performed before and after treatment to determine ventilation heterogeneity and perfusion, and its ability to assess treatment responsiveness. V-P SPECT shows promise as an objective measure to assess lung ventilation and perfusion to observe and assess responsiveness to mepolizumab. With quantification, this measure may allow better precision in determining treatment improvements., (© 2021 The Authors. - Abstract
This review covers selected 2019 articles on the biological effects of pollutants, including human physical disturbances, on marine and estuarine plants, animals, ecosystems, and habitats. The review, based largely on journal articles, covers field, and laboratory measurement activities (bioaccumulation of contaminants, field assessment surveys, toxicity testing, and biomarkers) as well as pollution issues of current interest including endocrine disrupters, emerging contaminants, wastewater discharges, marine debris, dredging, and disposal. Special emphasis is placed on effects of oil spills and marine debris due largely to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico and proliferation of data on the assimilation and effects of marine debris microparticulates. Several topical areas reviewed in the past (e.g., mass mortalities ocean acidification) were dropped this year. The focus of this review is on effects, not on pollutant sources, chemistry, fate, or transport. There is considerable overlap across subject areas (e.g., some bioaccumulation data may be appeared in other topical categories such as effects of wastewater discharges, or biomarker studies appearing in oil toxicity literature). Therefore, we strongly urge readers to use keyword searching of the text and references to locate related but distributed information. Although nearly 400 papers are cited, these now represent a fraction of the literature on these subjects. Use this review mainly as a starting point. And please consult the original papers before citing them., (© 2020 Water Environment Federation.)
