The composition of Cr-spinels from rocks of the Monchegorsk layered complex (2.5 Ga) basically corresponds to the evolutionary trend that is typical for layered mafic–ultramafic intrusions (late magmatic phases contain Cr-spinels enriched in Fe and depleted in Mg, Cr, and Al). Cr-spinels within the Dunite Body of the Sopcha massif are almost identical to those within the Dunite Block rocks and are close to those from harzburgite of the NKT massif. Cr-spinels within the satellite bodies of the Ore Layer 330 are shown to have zonal structure, which confirms their origin from a new portion of melt, which may have been injected with several pulses. The composition of accessory Cr-spinels may indicate that the layered complex of rocks of the South Sopcha massif was formed from the most evolved portion of magmatic melt (linked with the Monchetundra intrusion), and its vein complex may be considered the one formed at the final stages of the magmatic system evolution. The composition of Cr-spinels from the Pentlandite Gorge mafic–ultramafic rocks may indicate that they are fragments of the NKT massif and not of the Monchetundra massif, as it was believed earlier. The East Pana intrusion is a part of the Paleoproterozoic Fedorova–Pana complex (FPC), which belongs to the group of Fennoscandian layered mafic–ultramafic massifs. This article discusses the magmatic stratification of the East Pana intrusion, as well as Cu-Ni and platinum-group elements (PGE) mineralization (PGE zones A, B and C) in its various parts with a total length of more than 20 km, including the East Chuarvy PGE deposit. Based on the whole-rock data on the distribution of major, trace, and ore-forming elements, it is assumed that PGE zone A belongs to the main ore–magmatic system of the FPC, while PGE zones B and C belong to the minor ore–magmatic systems. At the same time, additional magmatic injection played an important role in the formation of economic Cu-Ni-PGE mineralization (PGE zone B), characterized by high PGE concentrations and moderate palladium enrichment. On the normalized distribution spectra of trace elements, the crystallization products of this injection (Gabbronorite Zone 2) have a positive Zr-Hf anomaly, which distinguishes it from host rocks with an anomaly of the opposite sign (Gabbronorite Zone 1, Gabbro Zone). The paper studies accessory Cr-spinels from deep drill holes crossing the Nude-Poaz massif, which is a part of the Monchegorsk mafic-ultramafic layered complex (2.5 Ga, Kola Peninsula, Russia). Cr-spinels occur as two morphological types that differ in their chemical composition, i.e., Cr-spinels of the first type are more aluminous, while Cr-spinels of the second type are more ferruginous and titaniferous. Cr-spinels of the Nude-Poaz massif are characterized by a Fe-Ti trend known for layered intrusions in the world. Cr-spinels of the Nude-Poaz massif quite clearly differ in composition from chromites of the Sopcheozero deposit: they are more ferruginous and less chromous. The specific composition of Cr-spinels in rocks of the Nude-Poaz massif can be correlated with the sequence of the magmatic phases intrusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intermediate rocks classified as diorite-gneisses occur within the southern part of the Monchegorsk (2.5 Ga) layered mafic-ultramafic complex (Kola Peninsula, Russia). These diorite-gneisses belong to a block historically known as the diorite window (DW) block. The same rocks occur in a framing of the Monchegorsk complex. The DW block is predominantly composed of diorite-gneisses and, to a lesser degree, of amphibolites. Multi-ordinal banding, complex folding, boudinage and metamorphic transformations, garnet porphyroblasts, and tourmaline veinlets are typical of the diorite-gneisses. In accordance with the U-Pb isotope data, the age of the diorite-gneisses in the DW block is 2736.0 ± 4.6 Ma. The Sm-Nd mineral (garnet, biotite, and tourmaline) isochron for the DW rocks has yielded an age of 1806 ± 23 Ma (related to the processes of the Svecofennian orogeny). The DW diorite-gneisses are compared with the metadiorites of the Gabbro-10 massif. The latter is a part of the Monchegorsk complex, with U-Pb crystallization age of 2498 ± 6 Ma. On the basis of geological and isotope-geochemical data, it is shown that the DW rocks belong to the Archean basement while the Gabbro-10 metadiorites probably represent one of the late-magmatic phases of the Monchegorsk complex.
