Abstract There is an urgent need to develop optimal solutions for deformation control of deep high‐stress roadways, one of the critical problems in underground engineering. The previously proposed four‐dimensional support (hereinafter 4D support), as a new support technology, can set the roadway surrounding rock under three‐dimensional pressure in the new balanced structure, and prevent instability of surrounding rock in underground engineering. However, the influence of roadway depth and creep deformation on the surrounding rock supported by 4D support is still unknown. This study investigated the influence of roadway depth and creep deformation time on the instability of surrounding rock by analyzing the energy development. The elastic strain energy was analyzed using the program redeveloped in FLAC3D. The numerical simulation results indicate that the combined support mode of 4D roof supports and conventional side supports is highly applicable to the stability control of surrounding rock with a roadway depth exceeding 520 m. With the increase of roadway depth, 4D support can effectively restrain the area and depth of plastic deformation in the surrounding rock. Further, 4D support limits the accumulation range and rate of elastic strain energy as the creep deformation time increases. 4D support can effectively reduce the plastic deformation of roadway surrounding rock and maintain the stability for a long deformation period of 6 months. As confirmed by in situ monitoring results, 4D support is more effective for the long‐term stability control of surrounding rock than conventional support.

Reliable operation of the feeding system plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient production of the working face of backfilling gob-side entry retaining (GER). In the process of vertical feeding of the roadside support body material, the problem of blocking of the feeding shaft has occurred to the test mine, which seriously affects the production safety in mines. In this paper, based on the theoretical analysis, a fluid-solid coupling numerical model was established. The change rules of the speed of sacked gangue, pressure of air below it, and speed vector distribution with different vent diameters were obtained. The blocking mechanism of the feeding system was revealed. The results show that if the exhaust vent of the stock bin was shut, the speed of gangue in the mine increased and then decreased and finally blocked in the feeding shaft. If the exhaust vent of the stock bin was opened for pressure discharge, with the increase of diameter of the exhaust vent, the maximum speed and ending speed of sacked gangue increased, pressure differential reduced, and speed vector was uniformly distributed. The energy criterion of blocking of the feeding shaft was further obtained. Based on the engineering conditions of the test mine, when the feeding shaft is blocked, the critical value of diameter of the exhaust vent is 30 mm. The research results provide basis for the design of key parameters of the vertical feeding system, ensuring the safe and efficient production of gob-backfilled GER working face.

Development of a safe and economical roadside support body (RSB) material is the key to successful backfilling gob-side entry retaining (GER). By means of laboratory tests, this paper studied the effects of the water-cement ratio, aggregate content, and age on the contractibility and resistance increasing speed, compressive strength, and postpeak carrying capacity of the concrete with gangues as an aggregate. It also discussed the rationality and adaptability of gangue concrete as a RSB material for backfilling GER. The experimental results show that the compressive strength of gangue concrete increases with age, and that the strength of gangue concrete demonstrates a nonlinear decreasing trend with the increase of the cementing material’s water-cement ratio. The water-cement ratio in the range of 0.46–0.60 has the most significant regulation effect on the strength of gangue concrete. Mixing with a certain amount of coal gangue enhances the postpeak carrying capacity of concrete, preventing the sample from impact failure. The field experimental results report that as a RSB material, gangue concrete can meet the design and application requirements of GER with gangue backfilling mining. A RSB material featuring high safety, high waste utilization rate, fast construction speed, and low costs is provided.

To counter the technical difficulties faced by gob-side entry retaining (GER) under multiple complex mining geological conditions in China, this paper introduces a GER method with fully mechanized gangue backfilling mining. A similar materials simulation experiment was conducted to simulate the gob-backfilled GER process by using the similar model test system containing an independently developed horizontal pushing load device. The experimental results show that the compaction speed of the backfilling area (BFA) can be improved, and the main roof subsidence can be reduced by increasing the horizontal pushing load and reducing the attenuation rate of the stress in BFA. The designed roadside backfill body (RBB) containing a flexible cushion is adaptive to the given deformation of the main roof, thus reducing the stress concentration of the RBB. The field test results show that when a 2 MPa horizontal pushing load is exerted in the BFA, arranging a 200 mm high-water-material flexible cushion can cause the BFA to swiftly change to the compaction stage. After stabilized deformation, the roadway section satisfies the design and application requirements. The feasibility and rationality of the GER with the fully mechanized gangue backfilling mining are proved, providing a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly mining method without using a coal pillar.

Serious floor heave in gob-side entry retaining (GER) with fully-mechanized gangue backfilling mining affects the transportation and ventilation safety of the mine. A theoretical mechanical model for the floor of gob-backfilled GER was established. The effects of the mechanical properties of floor strata, the granular compaction of backfilling area (BFA), the vertical support of roadside support body (RSB), and the stress concentration of the solid coal on the floor heave of the gob-backfilled GER were studied. The results show that the floor heave increases with the increase of the coal seam buried depth, and decreases with the increase of the floor rock elastic modulus. The development depth of the plastic zone decreases with the increase of the c and φ value of the floor rock, and increases with the increase of the stress concentration factor of the solid coal. The development depth of the plastic zone in the test mine reached 2.68 m. The field test and monitoring results indicate that the comprehensive control scheme of adjusting backfilling pressure, deep grouting reinforcement, shallow opening stress relief slots, and surface pouring can effectively control the floor heave. The roof-floor displacement is reduced by 73.8% compared to that with the original support scheme. The roadway section meets the design and application requirements when the deformation stabilizes, demonstrating the rationality of the mechanical model. The research results overcome the technical bottleneck of floor heave control of fully-mechanized backfilling GER, providing a reliable basis for the design of a floor heave control scheme.

This paper proposes gob-side entry retaining by roof break and filling in thick-layer soft rock conditions based on the thick-layer soft rock roof strata migration law and the demand for non-pillar gob-side entry retaining projects. The functional expressions of main roof subsidence are derived for three break roof direction conditions: lateral deflection toward the roadway, lateral deflection toward the gob and vertically to the roof. These are derived according to the load-bearing boundary conditions of the main roadway roof stratum. It is concluded that the break roof angle is an important factor influencing tire stability of gob-side entry retaining surrounding rock. This paper studies the stress distribution characteristics and plastic damage scope of gob-side entry retaining integrated coal seams, as well as the roof strata migration law and tire supporting stability of caving structure filled on tire break roof layer at the break roof angles of -5°, 0°, 5°, 10° and 15° are studied. The simulation results of numerical analysis indicate that the stress concentration and plastic damage scope to tire sides of gob-side entry retaining integrated coal at the break roof angle of 5° are reduced and shearing stress concentration of the caving filling body has been eliminated. The disturbance of coal raining to tire roadway roof and loss of canying capacity are mitigated. Field tests have been earned out on air-retum roadway 5203 with the break roof angle of 5°. lire monitoring indicates that tire break roof filling section and compaction section are located at 0-45 nr and 45-75 m behind the working face, respectively.
