The use of cerium oxide nanoparticles as a corrosion inhibitor for the CO2 corrosion of LDX 2101 duplex stainless steel has been evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization curves, linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. Polarization curves have shown that CeO2 nanoparticles behaved as an efficient mixed type of inhibitor, with an efficiency that increases with its concentration reaching a maximum value when 600 ppm of nanoparticles were added. CeO2 nanoparticles were chemically adsorbed onto the steel surface according to a Langmuir type of adsorption isotherm. A passive layer was formed by the addition of CeO2 nanoparticles with lower passive current density and higher pitting potential values than those obtained without these nanoparticles. Corrosion current density decreased whereas the polarization resistance increased by two orders of magnitude in both cases with the addition of the nanoparticles. Similarly, the double layer capacitance was decreased due to the adsorption of the nanoparticles. Steel was susceptible to pitting type of corrosion, but its number and diameter decreased with the nanoparticles.

The corrosion behavior of 1018 carbon steel in LiCl/H2O mixtures has been evaluated by using potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical noise and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Two different concentrations of LiCl were employed, namely 35 and 40 wt. %, and the testing temperatures included 25, 35 and 70 °C. It was found that the steel showed a passive zone; the corrosion current density value increased with an increase in the solution temperature and concentration. The pitting potential value decreased with an increase in the testing temperature and the solution concentration. The corrosion process was under charge transfer control. This mechanism was unaltered either by the solution temperature or concentration. The charge transfer resistance value decreased with an increase in both the solution temperature and concentration. A localized, pitting type of corrosion dominated the corrosion morphology at 25 and 35 °C, whereas at 70 °C, the main type of attack was a mixed type of corrosion.

In this investigation, Cu–Ni alloys with different aluminum additions were synthetized under a vacuum atmosphere to reduce the material density. Annealed alloys in a He atmosphere with low aluminum concentration exhibited a coarse dendritic structure, while samples with high aluminum concentration exhibited a refined dendritic structure. Structural defects analyses have shown relatively low vacancy concentrations. Hardness evaluations indicated an increment by approximately 5 times i.e., 370 HVN, more than that for the alloyed samples compared with the as-cast and unalloyed samples. Compression tests have shown a noticeable strengthening improvement (360 MPa), mainly in samples heat treated with 10 at.% Al, while samples with 5 at.% Al showed an acceptable resistance (270 MPa) as well. In general, the sample with 10 at.% Al presented the best performance to be considered as potential structural material.

Conventional absorption and refrigeration systems use a LiBr/H2O mixture, which causes corrosion problems to the metallic components. In order to avoid this and some other problems such as crystallization and vapor pressure, some additives such as CaCl2 and/or LiNO3 are added to the LiBr/H2O mixture. In the present work, the corrosion behavior of 1018 carbon steel as well as of type 304 and 316L stainless steels was evaluated in LiBr/H2O at 80 °C with the addition of CaCl2, LiNO3, and CaCl2+LiNO3. Potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used for this purpose. The results showed that the corrosion current density values of all tested steels decreased with the addition of CaCl2 and/or LiNO3, which induced the formation of a passive film on carbon steel. Both types of stainless steels showed a passive film in all tested conditions, but the passive current density was the lowest, whereas the passive zone was the widest, for 316L steel. The corrosion mechanism remained unaltered for both stainless steels but was changed with the addition of CaCl2 and/or LiNO3 for carbon steel.

The effect of Al additions (5, 10, 15 and 20 at.%) on the corrosion behaviour of a 50 at.% Ti–50Ni alloy in Hank solution has been investigated by using potentiodynamic polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical noise (EN) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements. Microstructure evolution was observed from columnar grains to equiaxed grains in samples with low and high Al additions, respectively. All the different techniques indicated that with the addition of either 5 or 10 at.% Al not only decreases the uniform corrosion rate, but also the susceptibility to pitting corrosion. EIS technique has shown that the corrosion resistance of these alloys is due to a TiO2 layer with a duplex structure. The corrosion behavior of pure aluminum (Al) in 20 v/v% ethanol–gasoline blends has been studied using electrochemical techniques. Ethanol was obtained from different fruits including sugar cane, oranges, apples, or mangos, whereas other techniques included lineal polarization resistance, electrochemical noise, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for 90 days. Results have shown that corrosion rates for Al in all the blends were higher than that obtained in gasoline. In addition, the highest corrosion rate was obtained in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane. The corrosion process was under charge transfer control in all blends; however, for some exposure times, it was under the adsorption/desorption control of an intermediate compound. Al was susceptible to a localized, plotting type of corrosion in all blends, but they were bigger in size and in number in the blend containing ethanol obtained from sugar cane.

In this research, the Pistia stratiotes leaf (PSL) extract was evaluated as a green corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of mild steel in 1 M HCl using electrochemical measurements and surface characterization. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) spectra showed that the inhibitory activity of the phytochemical compounds enhanced with increasing concentration up to 400 ppm, which was reflected in the increase in the charge transfer resistance and double-layer capacitance. Regarding the effect of immersion time, EIS results indicated that the persistence of the PSL extract was between 4 h and 8 h of exposure time. From polarization curve (PCC) results, the best performance of the corrosion inhibitor was achieved at 400 ppm with an inhibition efficiency of 93.7%. The PSL extract acted as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of the phytomolecules on the metal surface obeyed the Langmuir isotherm through a mixed mechanism (physical and chemical interactions) dominated by physisorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental analysis of the corroded samples confirmed the anticorrosive protection of the PSL extract. Chemical characterization of the PSL extract by GC-MS revealed the presence of phytol, steroids, and aromatic and long-chain unsaturated fatty acid esters, in order of abundance. Chemical quantum calculations by DFT allowed for determining that the phthalic acid, di(2-propylpentyl) ester compound has the most significant potential to act as the main active component in corrosion inhibition activity.

The effect of the galvanic corrosion process taking place between aluminium alloy (AA2024-T3) and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) immersed in 0.05 M NaCl was studied using organic and inorganic compounds as corrosion inhibitors. Electrochemical approaches such as electrochemical noise analysis (ENA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were carried out to evaluate efficiencies of 1,2,4-triazole (C2H3N3) and cerium nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO3)3·6H2O) as corrosion inhibitors. The highest efficiency was reached for Ce(NO3)3.6H2O, with some improvement observed by adding C2H3N3 in a mixed inhibitor solution. The noise resistance (Rn) and polarization resistance (Rp) values calculated from ENA and EIS data showed almost identical behavior with different magni­tudes but similar trends. Adsorption isotherm models estimated with fractional surface coverage (q) parameter were fitted better to Langmuir model for C2H3N3 and Temkin model for Ce(NO3)3·6H2O. The calculated values of Gibbs free energy suggested physi­sorption and chemisorption as spontaneous interactions between a metal surface and both inhibitors. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was carried out before and after immersing AA2024-T3 in the electrolyte, identifying rich zones in copper with cerium deposited over it and confirming the presence of rare-earth oxide deposition and oxide film products. The EDS analysis for CFRP revealed the deposition of Ce and Al particles over its surface after immersion in the electrolyte, especially in the areas rich in carbon.
