Aging, a natural biological process, presents challenges in maintaining physiological well-being and is associated with increased vulnerability to diseases. Addressing aging mechanisms is crucial for developing effective preventive and therapeutic strategies against age-related ailments. Rosmarinus officinalis L. is a medicinal herb widely used in traditional medicine, containing diverse bioactive compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which are associated with potential health benefits. Using network pharmacology, this study investigates the anti-aging function and underlying mechanisms of R. officinalis. Through network pharmacology analysis, the top 10 hub genes were identified, including TNF, CTNNB1, JUN, MTOR, SIRT1, and others associated with the anti-aging effects. This analysis revealed a comprehensive network of interactions, providing a holistic perspective on the multi-target mechanism underlying Rosemary's anti-aging properties. GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis revealed the relevant biological processes, molecular functions, and cellular components involved in treating aging-related conditions. KEGG pathway analysis shows that anti-aging targets of R. officinalis involved endocrine resistance, pathways in cancer, and relaxin signaling pathways, among others, indicating multifaceted mechanisms. Genes like MAPK1, MMP9, and JUN emerged as significant players. These findings enhance our understanding of R. officinalis's potential in mitigating aging-related disorders through multi-target effects on various biological processes and pathways. Apart from their antioxidant activity, plant-derived bioactive compounds can also positively affect the quality of meat and meat products by improving their sensory and microbiological properties and preventing discolouration. The aim of this study was to determine how the addition of different forms of rosemary improved the quality of pork. Minced pork samples were divided into a control sample without additives (C) and three experimental samples with certified additives (15 mg/kg of meat each), i.e. rosemary oleoresin (ROL), extract (REX) and essential oil (REO). Each was further divided into three subsamples; the first was evaluated before storage, and the second and third were evaluated after respective 7- and 14-day vacuum-packed storage at 2°C. The TBARS value was expressed as mg of malondialdehyde (MDA) per kg of meat. Colour was determined based on the values of the standard colour space values of L* (lightness), a* (redness) and b* (yellowness) as well as C* (chroma) and h° (hue angle). Sensory attributes of the samples were evaluated on a nine-point scale. The pour-plating procedure was used for the enumeration of Pseudomonas, mesophilic lactic acid bacteria, psychrotrophic bacteria and rods of the Enterobacteriaceae family. Within each bacterial group, the most common colonies were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization (MALDI). Lipid oxidation was most effectively inhibited by REO. The addition of ROL and REO to pork lightened its colour. Meat with REO had stronger redness, whereas meat with ROL had stronger yellowness. The addition of REX affected the sensory properties of pork most beneficially. Neither Enterobacteriaceae nor Pseudomonas spp. were detected in REO pork, which also contained lower counts of lactic acid bacteria than group C pork. The results of this study indicate that rosemary has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and may improve the colour and sensory attributes of pork. Rosmarinus officinalis L. is a perennial evergreen subshrub of the family Lamiaceae in the class Dicotyledoneae. It is native to Europe and the Mediterranean coast of northern Africa and has broad development prospects in the food, medicinal, and chemical industries. Although the chemical composition of R. officinalis L. has been reported, the classifications and summary of the structure of its compounds are not sufficient. In this article, we summarize the chemical components of R. officinalis L. that have been reported over the past five years, including flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenylpropanoids, and their structure, and we introduce the applications of R. officinalis L., so as to provide a reference and scientific basis for the chemical composition analysis, structural identification, development and utilization of R. officinalis L..

Rosemary essential oil (REO) is widely recognized as a food flavoring and traditional herb and possesses potential antioxidant activity. However, its low yield rate and unclarified antioxidant mechanism warrant further investigation. In this study, an enzyme pretreatment-assisted extraction method with Box–Behnken design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM) models was employed to optimize the main factors of REO, and its antioxidant molecular mechanism under oxidative stress was elucidated in hydrogen peroxide-induced human lung carcinoma (A549) cells. The optimized yield (4.10%) of REO was recorded with the following optimum conditions: enzyme amount 1.60%, enzyme digestion pH 5.0, enzyme digestion temperature 46.50 °C, and enzyme digestion time 1.7 h. Meanwhile, 1.8-cineole (53.48%) and β-pinene (20.23%) exhibited radical scavenging activity higher than that of BHA and BHT. At the cellular level, REO (12.5–50 µg/mL) increased the levels of cell viability, CAT, SOD, and GSH significantly while reducing the contents of ROS, MDA, and GSSG, when compared to H2O2 exposure. Mechanically, REO relieved oxidative stress via activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway and enhancing the protein expression of Nrf2, NQO-1, and HO-1, which was further verified by molecular docking between the main component 1.8-cineole and the Kelch domain of KEAP1. In this work, essential oils were extracted from rosemary leaves (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) from the eastern region of Morocco using hydrodistillation (Hd) and steam distillation (Sd). The yield, chemical composition, thermal stability, and antioxidant activity of the essential oils obtained by the two methods were compared. Determining the chemical composition of rosemary essential oil, with GC-MS, showed a significant qualitative and quantitative difference in certain components. The Sd method improved the extraction of sesquiterpene compounds with high molecular weight and low vapour pressure. The findings reveal that sesquiterpene and oxygenated monoterpenes in essential oils improved the antioxidant activity and thermal stability. Determining antioxidant activity using DPPH and the β-carotene bleaching assay showed that the Sd and Hd oils presented good radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 4960 μg/mL for Hd oil and 4570 μg/mL for Sd oil), capable of delaying β-carotene discolouration with 16.3 and 9.71% inhibition for Sd and Hd respectively. Thermal stability analysis of the oil products was performed using TGA/DTG analysis, and the results showed that the decomposition points of Hd oil and Sd oil were 362 and 368 K respectively. Furthermore, to identify intermolecular interactions and develop better knowledge of phenomena occurring during the extraction of the family of sesquiterpene compounds by water, quantum chemical calculation and molecular simulation by molecular dynamics (MD) were performed. The results suggested the relative stability of caryophyllene-water and the development of intermolecular bonding interactions of van der Walls and steric effect, improving extraction of the substance studied under steam distillation conditions. The antibiotics are generally regarded as the first choice approach to treat dairy mastitis, targeting the public health problems associated with the food safety and the emergence of antibioticresistant bacteria. The objective of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of ursolic acid (UA) when used to treat Staphylococcus aureus and other isolates associated with bovine mastitis and to clarify the mechanistic basis for these effects. The bacteriostatic properties of UA extracted from Rosmarinus officinalis L. at four different purity levels were assessed by calculating minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values, while the synergistic effects of combining 98% UA with antibiotics were evaluated by measuring the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI). Changes in biofilm formation and the growth curves of the clinical isolates were assessed to clarify the bacteriostatic effect of UA. Furthermore, the cell wall integrity, protein synthesis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were assessed to determine the antibacterial mechanism of UA treatment. Ultimately, UA was revealed to exhibit robust activity against Gram-positive bacteria including S. aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (ATCC27957), Streptococcus agalactiae (ATCC13813), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC29212), and Streptococcus mutans (ATCC25175). However, it did not affect Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). The MIC values of UA preparations that were 98, 50, 30, and 10% pure against S. aureus were 39, 312, 625, and 625 µg/mL, respectively, whereas the corresponding MIC for E. coli was >5,000 µg/mL. The minimum bactericidal concentrations of 98% UA when used to treat three clinical S. aureus isolates (S4, S5, and S6) were 78, 78, and 156 µg/mL, respectively. Levels of biofilm formation for clinical S. aureus isolates decreased with increasing 98% UA concentrations. Above the MIC dose, UA treatment resulted in the dissolution of bacterial cell walls and membranes, with cells becoming irregularly shaped and exhibiting markedly impaired intracellular protein synthesis. S. aureus treated with 98% UA was able to rapidly promote intracellular ROS biogenesis. This study evaluated the effect of free and nanoencapsulated rosemary essential oil (REO) as an antibiotic alternative in broiler diets on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits, meat quality and gene expression. Four hundred twenty day-old commercial broiler chicks (VENCOBB) were randomly allocated to seven dietary treatments, each having four replicates of fifteen chicks. The dietary treatments comprised control (CON) fed a basal diet only, AB (basal diet + 10 mg enramycin/kg), CS (basal diet + 150 mg chitosan nanoparticles/kg), REOF100 and REOF200 (basal diet + 100 mg and 200 mg free REO/kg, respectively), and REON100 and REON200 (basal diet + 100 mg and 200 mg nanoencapsulated REO/kg, respectively). Overall (7–42 d), REON200 showed the highest (p < 0.001) body weight gain (1899 g/bird) and CON had the lowest gain (1742 g/bird), while the CS, REOF100 and REOF200 groups had a similar gain, but lower than that of the AB and REON100 groups. Feed intake was not affected by dietary treatments. Overall, the feed efficiency increased (p = 0.001) by 8.47% in the REON200 group and 6.21% in the AB and REON100 groups compared with the CON. Supplementation of REO improved (p < 0.05) dry matter and crude protein digestibility, with the highest values in REON100 and REON200. Ether extract, crude fiber, calcium and phosphorus digestibility values showed no difference among the groups. The dressing, breast, thigh % increased (p < 0.05) and abdominal fat % decreased (p < 0.001) more in the REON200 group than with other treatments and CON. In breast meat quality, water holding capacity and extract reserve volume increased (p < 0.05) while drip loss and cholesterol content decreased (p < 0.05) in REON100 and REON200. No change was observed in the breast meat color among dietary treatments and CON. The REON100 and REON200 groups had reduced (p < 0.05) meat lipid peroxidation as depicted by the decreased levels of TBARS, free fatty acids and peroxide value compared to other treatments and CON. The expression of the Mucin 2, PepT1 and IL-10 genes was upregulated (p < 0.001) and TNF-α downregulated (p < 0.001) by dietary addition of REO particularly in the nanoencapsulated form compared with the CON. In conclusion, nanoencapsulated REO, especially at 200 mg/kg diet, showed promising results as an antibiotic alternative in improving the performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits, meat quality and upregulation of growth and anti-inflammatory genes. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is an evergreen and a xerophytic shrub that is frequently employed in culinary, decorative, and industrial applications. It shows significant variations in biomass and essential oil (EO) yield due to effects of biotic and abiotic factors. Biostimulants are widely used in agriculture, and in organic agricultural systems, they may contribute significantly to the stability and/or to the increase in crop yields, ensuring respect for the environment. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different types of biostimulants on the yield performance of rosemary. Four commercial formulations of biostimulants based on Eklonia maxima, Ascophyllum nodosum, fulvic acids, and protein hydrolysates were used for the tests. Water was used as a control. Six applications were performed. At harvest, several morphological and productive parameters were determined. All parameters were affected by biostimulant application. The highest fresh and dry yields were obtained with the application of fulvic acids (13.1 t ha−1 of fresh biomass and 4.3 t ha−1 of dry biomass) and protein hydrolysates (13.6 t ha−1 of fresh biomass and 4.4 t ha−1 of dry biomass) with values 60% higher than that of the control. Regarding the EO content in the dry biomass, the highest value (1.72% v/w) was found in control plants, whilst the lowest (1.14%) was observed in plants treated with fulvic acids. In the case of the EO yield, the lowest value (46.5 kg ha−1) per unit area was found in the control. The application of Eklonia maxima and protein hydrolysates produced the highest EO yield values, 65 kg ha−1 and 66.5 kg ha−1, respectively. Rosmarinus officinalis L. compounds, especially its main polyphenolic compounds, carnosic acid (CA) and rosmarinic acid (RA), influence various facets of cancer biology, making them valuable assets in the ongoing fight against cancer. These two secondary metabolites exhibit formidable antioxidant properties that are a pivotal contributor against the development of cancer. Their antitumor effect has been related to diverse mechanisms. In the case of CA, it has the capacity to induce cell death of cancer cells through the rise in ROS levels within the cells, the inhibition of protein kinase AKT, the activation of autophagy-related genes (ATG) and the disrupt mitochondrial membrane potential. Regarding RA, its antitumor actions encompass apoptosis induction through caspase activation, the inhibition of cell proliferation by interrupting cell cycle progression and epigenetic regulation, antioxidative stress-induced DNA damage, and interference with angiogenesis to curtail tumor growth. To understand the molecular interaction between rosemary compounds (CA and RA) and a protein that is involved in cancer and inflammation, S100A8, we have performed a series of molecular docking analyses using the available three-dimensional structures (PDBID: 1IRJ, 1MR8, and 4GGF). Botrytis cinerea Pers. the causative agent of grey mould is commonly controlled by synthetic fungicides. Recently, studies have focused on the use of aromatic and medicinal plant extracts as safer alternatives. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition and the antifungalactivity of essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis L.(REO) and Salvia officinalis L.(SEO), against B. cinerea Pers.on tomato leaves and fruits. The EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation, and their chemical composition was analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antifungal activity of the EOs was evaluated on tomato leaves and fruitsinfested with B. cinerea Pers. using four treatment methods; simultaneous, preventive, curative, and combined preventive and curative treatments. GC-MS analysis showed that REO is composed mostly of a-pinene (29.01%), verbenone (21.59%), and camphor (7.32%), while SEO is predominantly composed of trans-thujone (29.01%), 1,8-cineole (22.78%), camphor (20.31%), and a-pinene (7.49%). REO and SEO demonstrated a concentration-dependent antifungal activity against B. cinerea Pers, especially in the combined preventive and curative treatment which exhibited 100% fungal growth inhibition for both EOs on tomatoleaves and fruits. On the tomato leaves, REO showed the least antifungal activity in the simultaneous treatment (IC50= 7.62 ± 0.83µL/mL), while on tomato fruits, the curative treatment withSEOexhibited the least effective activity (IC50= 9.15± 0.53µL/mL). We provide proof-of-concept for the innovative method of 2,6-dichloroindophenol (DCPIP) for measuring the antioxidant activity of plant extracts. Antioxidant content can be determined using the standard DCPIP test and compare the results with the DPPH results as conventional method. DCPIP operates on the premise that the deep blue color of the oxidized dye is reduced to an invisible solution. Ascorbic acid's antioxidant activity was measured by DCPIP at different times (from 1 to 60 min) and was concentration-dependent, with the maximum activity being at 400 g/mL. In addition, when compared to other incubation durations, the ascorbic acid standard, a natural antioxidant, gave the maximum activity within the first five minutes of incubation with DCPIP. DCPIP is a marker of antioxidant activity both against vitamin C and plant extracts. The DCPIP approach is quick and unaffected by pH variation. The stability of the DCPIP reagent over time (5 and 30 min) and color reduction by ascorbic acid as a natural antioxidant standard were demonstrated using a straightforward and quick method. This study investigated the effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. (RO) extract on neurobehavioral and neurobiological changes in male rats with pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced epilepsy. Rats were assigned into five groups: (1) control rats, (2) RO-treated rats, (3) PTZ-treated rats, (4) PTZ + RO-treated rats, and (5) PTZ + valproic acid (VA)-treated rats. The PTZ-treated rats required a significantly longer time and distance to find the platform in the Morris water maze test than the control and RO-treated rats. Additionally, PTZ-treated rats showed a decrease in tendency to cross over the platform compared to PTZ group. PTZ + RO-treated rats showed decreased swimming time and distance to find the platform compared to PTZ group. PTZ + RO-treated rats showed a significant decrease in seizure score, a reduced number of myoclonic jerks, and an increased onset of the first myoclonic jerk compared to PTZ group. PTZ reduced the time required to enter the dark room in the passive avoidance learning test, which was reversed by RO treatment. Biochemical results revealed that PTZ-treated rats had higher levels of oxidative stress markers. RO significantly increased the antioxidant markers levels and maintained normal rat brain histology. Rosmarinus officinalis L. is a perennial herb, known for culinary as well as medicinal properties. It has been shown that bioactive compounds like rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and carnosol are responsible for the medicinal properties of this plant species. Carnosic acid is a phenolic diterpene synthesized in young leaves of rosemary, whereas carnosol is produced after the oxidation of carnosic acid. Several studies have confirmed their antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antitumor, neuroprotective, and gastroprotective properties. Ethanol, a mixture of ethanol-acetone, and hexane have been recommended as the best solvents for the extraction of carnosic acid, but advanced extraction techniques such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), etc. have been used to extract these phenolic antioxidant compounds in higher yield. This report is a kind of first study that emphasizes the recent research on the pharmacological potentials of carnosic acid and carnosol and summarizes the studies on modern extraction procedures. Objectives: Various pure rosemary essential oil containing commercial products are in demand for their health-promoting and cosmetic claims in Türkiye. Although they are natural and harmless, they should be in compliance with European Pharmacopoeia (EP) criteria. Therefore, in this study, 15 rosemary oil samples sold in pharmacies, herbal shops, and online platforms in Türkiye were investigated in terms of "Rosemary Oil" EP 10.0. monograph criteria. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the current quality status of rosemary essential oils in the Turkish market. Materials and Methods: Appearance, fatty oils and resinified essential oils, relative density, refractive index, optical rotation, and acid value tests were performed according to EP 10.0 and compared with the given standards. In addition, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis were conducted on all samples for advanced understanding of their phytochemical profile and harmony with EP standards. Results: Fifteen pure rosemary oil-containing products from the Turkish market were evaluated. All of the samples were licensed as cosmetic products in Türkiye via the Ministry of Health. 83.1 to 96.9% of the ingredients of all samples were determined via GC-MS analysis. Results demonstrated that none of the samples from the Turkish rosemary essential oil market fully complied with the EP rosemary oil monograph standards. Conclusion: Considering our data, it was revealed that enhanced regulations and auditing mechanisms are needed to improve the quality of products. Oxidative stress is the most critical factor in multiple functional disorders' development, and natural antioxidants could protect the human body against it. Our study aims to investigate the polyphenol content of four extracts of two medicinal plants (Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Thymus vulgaris L.) and analyze the correlation with their antioxidant activity. The research was carried out on extracts of rosemary and thyme obtained from species cultivated together in plant communities. Both were compared with extracts from species cultivated in individual crops (control crops). Their polyphenols were determined by spectrophotometric methods (dosage of flavones, phenol carboxylic acids, and total polyphenols) and chromatography (UHPLC–MS and FT–ICR MS). Triterpenic acids were also quantified, having a higher concentration in the thyme extract from the culture. The antioxidant activity of the dry extracts was evaluated in vitro (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) and in silico (prediction of interactions with BACH1/BACH2 transcription factors). The concentrations of polyphenols are higher in the extracts obtained from the sources collected from the common crops. These observations were also validated following the chromatographic analysis for some compounds. Statistically significant differences in the increase in the antioxidant effect were observed for the extracts from the common batches compared to those from the individual ones. Following the Pearson analysis, the IC50 values for each plant extract were strongly correlated with the concentration of active phytoconstituents. Molecular docking studies revealed that quercetin could bind to BTB domains of BACH1 and BACH2 transcription factors, likely translating into increased antioxidant enzyme expression. This study investigated the effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil, REO (one, two and three percent) on the microbiological and oxidative stability of Sarshir during 20 days of refrigerated storage (4 °C). Initially, the chemical composition (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, GC/MS), antimicrobial (paper disc diffusion) and antioxidant (DPPH) properties of REO were evaluated. Then, the microbial safety, oxidative stability (peroxide and anisidine values) and overall acceptability of the product after addition of REO to Sarshir and the subsequent storage period were determined. According to GC/MS analysis, the major components of REO were α-pinene (24.6%), 1,8-cineole (14.1%), camphor (13.5%), camphene (8.1%) and limonene (6.1%), respectively. Moreover, it was also found that Limosilactobacillus fermentum (inhibition zone (IZ) of 23.5 mm) and Salmonella Typhi (IZ of 16.4 mm) were the most sensitive and resistant spoilage and pathogenic bacteria against REO, respectively. In addition, the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the REO was measured at 24.8 mg/mL, while the IC50 value of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was 16.6 mg/mL. The highest and lowest bacterial populations were detected in the control and the sample containing 3% REO, respectively. Context: The persistent spread of highly contagious COVID-19 disease is one of the deadliest occurrences in the history of mankind. Despite the distribution of numerous efficacious vaccines and their extensive usage, the perpetual effectiveness of immunization is being catechized. Therefore, discovering an alternative therapy to control and prevent COVID-19 infections has become a top priority. The main protease (Mpro) plays a key role in viral replication, making it an intriguing pharmacological target for SARS-CoV-2. Methods: In this context, virtual screening of thirteen bioactive polyphenols and terpenoids of Rosmarinus officinalis L. was performed using several computational modules including molecular docking, ADMET, drug-likeness characteristics, and molecular dynamic simulation to predict the potential inhibitors against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro (PDB: 6LU7). The results suggest that apigenin, betulinic acid, luteolin, carnosol, and rosmarinic acid may emerge as potential inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 with acceptable drug-likeness, pharmacokinetics, ADMET characteristics, and binding interactions comparable with remdesivir and favipiravir. These findings imply that some of the active components of Rosmarinus officinalis L. can serve as an effective antiviral source for the development of therapeutics for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Medicinal plants represent an inexhaustible source of traditional and effective remedies thanks to the various active ingredients they contain. Secondary metabolites present in plant extracts, such as essential oils (EO), have remarkable pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial effects. Here, the chemical composition and antimicrobial effects of four Moroccan medicinal plants, Rosmarinus officinalis L. (R. officinalis), Mentha pulegium L. (M. pulegium), Salvia officinalis L. (S. officinalis), and Thymus zygis subsp. gracilis (Boiss.) R. Morales (T. zygis), traditionally used in Morocco to treat microbial infections, were addressed. EO were extracted using the hydrodistillation method, and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). EO yields were of 3.64 ± 0.12, 3.53 ± 0.06, 2.48 ± 0.06, and 2.34 ± 0.08%, respectively, for M. pulegium, R. officinalis, S. officinalis, and T. zygis. The main bioactive components present in these EO were piperitenone (32.9%) and pulegone (32.8%) for M. pulegium, 1,8-cineol (43.8%) and camphor (18.7%) for R. officinalis, 1,8-cineole (16.8%) and trans-thujone (15.9%) for S. officinalis, and thymol (36.4%), carvacrol (24.1%) and cymene (23.5%) for T. zygis. These EO showed, according to the results of their antimicrobial activities, good effectiveness against bacteria and fungi. Moreover, the T. zygis EO showed the most potent activity against all bacteria studied, while that of R. officinalis, M. pulegium, and S. officinalis showed moderate activity against the Enterobacter cloacae of Streptococcus agalactiae and Escherichia coli. The antifungal activity tests revealed a strong antifungal activity for the T. zygis EO and a moderate activity for the S. officinalis EO. On the other hand, the EO of R. officinalis, and M. pulegium were found to be inactive at the doses used against the selected strains. In conclusion, our results show that the medicinal plants studied contain biologically active molecules with antimicrobial effects. They can replace synthesized molecules, especially in the formulation of additives, and for therapeutic, cosmetic, and food-processing purposes.

Rosemary is an aromatic shrub native to the coasts of the Mediterranean region. Understanding the changes of chemical composition of essential oil is critical for more targeted rosemary harvesting, which can lead to higher-quality essential oils for agro-food, medicinal, and cosmetics uses. Therefore, rosemary plants were harvested at pre-flowering, full-flowering, and post-flowering stage grown in the experimental area of the Department of Field Crops at Çukurova University in order to determine the most suitable harvest time for the highest amount of essential oils and their important compounds. Essential oil content decreased slightly from the pre-flowering to post-flowering. The highest essential oil content (1.68%) was determined at the pre-flowering stage. Twenty-eight compounds were found representing 95.74%-96.74% of the total essential oil. The major compounds for rosemary were camphor (28.43%-32.74%), 1,8-cineol (20.80%-22.61%), isoborneol (6.05%-7.28%), verbenol (5.17%-6.98%), and limonene (5.71%-6.23%), respectively. Consequently, the optimal harvest time in terms of essential oil content, as well as camphor, 1,8-cineole and limonene content, may be considered as pre-flowering stage.

The objective of this study was to improve extraction of natural antioxidants (NAs) found in Algeria Rosmarinus officinalis L. using cleaner extraction processes. To verify the single factors effects, a Factorial design (FD) was used to study the impact of the main process variables (time, solid-to-liquid ratio, and temperature) on extraction efficiency. Total Polyphenol Content (TPC), Total Flavonoids Content (TFC) and Antioxidant Activity (AA) were measured to control the extraction process efficiency on different experimental conditions. The best experimental result was obtained at 30°C for 30 min and 0.05 g/mL. The value of TPC, TFC and AA was respectively, 121.80 mg GAE/g DW, 44.01 mg QE/g DW and 96.36 %. The correlation between TPC, TFC and AA remains unclear. The extraction of polyphenols was shown to obey first order kinetic with a 0.045 min-1coefficient for the fast period and 0.05 min-1 for the slow period. Finally, the plant morphology investigated by SEM revealed physical changes on plant material.

The evaluation of antioxidant activity of UAE inhuman skin fibroblast (HS-68) cell line was carried out after the induction of oxidative stress. The results determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed a strong protective effect against H2O2oxidative stress induction in cells pretreated with UAE. The obtained results allow us to give new insight about the effect of the extraction method on the chemical composition and biological activities of the extract and the importance of the choice of the most appropriate processing technique to prepare rosemary extract with a high antioxidant potency and protective effect against oxidative stress. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is an evergreen and a xerophytic shrub that is frequently employed in culinary, decorative, and industrial applications. It shows significant variations in biomass and essential oil (EO) yield due to effects of biotic and abiotic factors. Biostimulants are widely used in agriculture, and in organic agricultural systems, they may contribute significantly to the stability and/or to the increase in crop yields, ensuring respect for the environment. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different types of biostimulants on the yield performance of rosemary. Four commercial formulations of biostimulants based on Eklonia maxima, Ascophyllum nodosum, fulvic acids, and protein hydrolysates were used for the tests. Water was used as a control. Six applications were performed. At harvest, several morphological and productive parameters were determined. All parameters were affected by biostimulant application. The highest fresh and dry yields were obtained with the application of fulvic acids (13.1 t ha−1 of fresh biomass and 4.3 t ha−1 of dry biomass) and protein hydrolysates (13.6 t ha−1 of fresh biomass and 4.4 t ha−1 of dry biomass) with values 60% higher than that of the control. Regarding the EO content in the dry biomass, the highest value (1.72% v/w) was found in control plants, whilst the lowest (1.14%) was observed in plants treated with fulvic acids. In the case of the EO yield, the lowest value (46.5 kg ha−1) per unit area was found in the control. The application of Eklonia maxima and protein hydrolysates produced the highest EO yield values, 65 kg ha−1 and 66.5 kg ha−1, respectively. This study highlights the use of biostimulants to increase the yield performance of rosemary when grown in an organic agricultural system.

The experiment was conducted in Tissue Culture Lab. at the Biology Department, College of Science, University of Al-Qadisiyah. The aim of the study includes the effect of growth regulators (Kin and 2,4-D) and Chitosan on callus weight and stimulating the production of active compound for the Rosemary plant using tissue culture technique using two explants (the developing apex and the lateral buds). The parts were planted. Plant one node 0.5 - 1.0 cm after sterilization with ethanol solution at a concentration of 70% for 1 minute and a solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at a concentration of 8% for 15 minutes in test tubes containing MS medium for tissue culture with various concentrations of growth regulators added and Chitosan, incubated in a growth chamber at a temperature of 25±2°C, under the effect of light conditions (light and dark). Data were taken after 45 days of cultivation for all experiments. Better treatment 2,4-D (1.0 m.l-1), Kin (0.5 m.l-1), chitosan (5.0 m.l-1) gave the highest weight in light and dark. And the highest significant increase of stearic acid. The chemical profiles of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils, collected from five distinct geographical regions in Palestine, were determined using GC-MS. The major phytochemical classes of R. officinalis EOs were monoterpene hydrocarbon (24.81–78.75%) and oxygenated monoterpenoids (19.01–73.78%), with 1,8-cineole (4.81–37.83%), α-pinene (13.07–51.36%), and camphor (11.95–24.30%) being the most abundant components of the studied oils. Using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of EOs revealed that EO from the Jenin region had the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 10.23 ± 0.11 µg/mL, followed by samples from Tulkarm (IC50 = 37.15 ± 2.3 µg/mL) and Nablus (IC50= 38.9 ± 0.45 µg/mL). With MICs of 12.5, 12.5, 6.25, 6.25, and 6.25 µg/mL against MRSA, S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumonia, and P. vulgaris, respectively, the EO extracted from the Jenin region of Palestine had the greatest antibacterial activity. Furthermore, EOs from Jenin and Nablus demonstrated stronger anti-candida action than the pharmaceutical formulation Fluconazole, with MICs of 0.781, 0.781, and 1.56 µg/mL, respectively. This study investigated the effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. (RO) extract on neurobehavioral and neurobiological changes in male rats with pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced epilepsy. Rats were assigned into five groups: (1) control rats, (2) RO-treated rats, (3) PTZ-treated rats, (4) PTZ + RO-treated rats, and (5) PTZ + valproic acid (VA)-treated rats. The PTZ-treated rats required a significantly longer time and distance to find the platform in the Morris water maze test than the control and RO-treated rats. Additionally, PTZ-treated rats showed a decrease in tendency to cross over the platform compared to PTZ group. PTZ + RO-treated rats showed decreased swimming time and distance to find the platform compared to PTZ group. PTZ + RO-treated rats showed a significant decrease in seizure score, a reduced number of myoclonic jerks, and an increased onset of the first myoclonic jerk compared to PTZ group. PTZ reduced the time required to enter the dark room in the passive avoidance learning test, which was reversed by RO treatment. Biochemical results revealed that PTZ-treated rats had higher levels of oxidative stress markers. RO significantly increased the antioxidant markers levels and maintained normal rat brain histology. This study revealed that RO can shield the brain and neural tissues from PTZ.

Background: Non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a global, fatal oncological malady to which conventional and targeted therapies proved less effective with consequent side effects; hence, phytocomponents from herbal sources may provide potent alternative and should be tested for cancer intervention. Activation and overexpression of proto-oncogene tyrosine kinase Src (c-Src) and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) lead to cell proliferation and invasion. Hence, in the present investigation, in silico analysis was carried out to identify molecular intervention of phytocomponents in blocking the active site and thus inhibiting c-Src and FAK activation, which in turn could control progression of NSCLC.Materials and Methods: In silico analysis was carried out using Molegro Virtual Docker, Molegro Molecular Viewer, and ClusPro server for ligand-protein and protein-protein interaction study. Phytochemical analysis and assay for antioxidant activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Rosmarinus officinalis L. were carried out using standard phytochemical tests, high-performance thin-layer chromatography, and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay. Effectiveness of extract in arresting cell proliferation was confirmed using 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay on A549 cell line.Results: In silico analysis indicated effective binding of rosmarinic acid to the active site of target proteins FAK and c-Src, blocking their activity. MTT assay revealed potent antiproliferative activity of hydroalcoholic extract which acted in dose-dependent manner. Phytochemical analysis confirmed that the extract was rich in phytocomponents and had antioxidant activity of 94.9%, which could therefore effectively eliminate free radicals and inhibit cell progression.Conclusion: In silico and in vitro studies confirmed that phytocomponents present in hydroalcoholic extract of R. officinalis L. could effectively block the active site of target proteins and thus controlled cell proliferation on NSCLC cells, suggesting herb as an effective alternative medicine for the treatment of NSCLC. Oxidative stress is the most critical factor in multiple functional disorders’ development, and natural antioxidants could protect the human body against it. Our study aims to investigate the polyphenol content of four extracts of two medicinal plants (Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Thymus vulgaris L.) and analyze the correlation with their antioxidant activity. The research was carried out on extracts of rosemary and thyme obtained from species cultivated together in plant communities. Both were compared with extracts from species cultivated in individual crops (control crops). Their polyphenols were determined by spectrophotometric methods (dosage of flavones, phenol carboxylic acids, and total polyphenols) and chromatography (UHPLC–MS and FT–ICR MS). Triterpenic acids were also quantified, having a higher concentration in the thyme extract from the culture. The antioxidant activity of the dry extracts was evaluated in vitro (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) and in silico (prediction of interactions with BACH1/BACH2 transcription factors). Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nanoemulsion containing peppermint and rosemary essential oils in rats with osteoarthritis (OA). Methods In this experimental study, we prepared a nanoemulsion containing peppermint and rosemary essential oils by spontaneous emulsification and evaluated the nanoemulsion’s dermal irritation and toxicity. Investigating the analgesic effect of the nanoemulsion, we randomly assigned 36 male rats to 6 groups: Control (saline injection into the knee), osteoarthritis (intra-articular injection of 2 mg monosodium iodoacetate), and four groups of OA treated with nanoemulsion gel, nanoemulsion solution, rosemary and peppermint essential oil gel, or diclofenac sodium. Treatments were administered topically at a dose of 1 ml daily. Using behavioral tests, we assessed pain on days 1, 4, 7, and 14 after injection. Finally, we did the histopathological and biochemical evaluation of rats’ knee joints. Results There were no irritation signs on the animals’ skin after receiving the nanoemulsion and no changes in the hematological and biochemical parameters of rats’ blood compared to the control group. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation by environmental agents and microbial metabolites is potentially implicated in a series of skin diseases. Hence, it would be very important to identify natural compounds that could inhibit the AhR activation by ligands of microbial origin as 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ), indirubin (IND) and pityriazepin (PZ) or the prototype ligand 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Five different dry Rosmarinus officinalis L. extracts (ROEs) were assayed for their activities as antagonists of AhR ligand binding with guinea pig cytosol in the presence of [3H]TCDD. The methanolic ROE was further assayed towards CYP1A1 mRNA induction using RT-PCR in human keratinocytes against TCDD, FICZ, PZ, and IND. The isolated metabolites, carnosic acid, carnosol, 7-O-methyl-epi-rosmanol, 4′,7-O-dimethylapigenin, and betulinic acid, were assayed for their agonist and antagonist activity in the presence and absence of TCDD using the gel retardation assay (GRA). All assayed ROE extracts showed similar dose-dependent activities with almost complete inhibition of AhR activation by TCDD at 100 ppm. The methanol ROE at 10 ppm showed 99%, 50%, 90%, and 85% inhibition against TCDD, FICZ, IND, and PZ, respectively, in human keratinocytes. Most assayed metabolites exhibited dose-dependent antagonist activity. ROEs inhibit AhR activation by TCDD and by the Malassezia metabolites FICZ, PZ, and IND. Our aim in the experiment was to study the effects of methyl jasmonates (MeJA) on the active compounds of rosemary suspension cells, the metabolites' change of contents under different concentrations of MeJA, including 0 (CK), 10 (M10), 50 (M50) and 100 μM MeJA (M100). The results demonstrated that MeJA treatments promoted the accumulation of rosmarinic acid (RA), carnosic acid (CA), flavonoids, jasmonate (JA), gibberellin (GA), and auxin (IAA); but reduced the accumulations of abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), and aspartate (Asp). In addition, 50 and 100 μM MeJA promoted the accumulation of alanine (Ala) and glutamate (Glu), and 50 μM MeJA promoted the accumulation of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid in rosemary suspension cells. Comparative RNA-sequencing analysis of different concentrations of MeJA showed that a total of 30, 61, and 39 miRNAs were differentially expressed in the comparisons of CKvsM10, CKvsM50, CKvsM100, respectively. The analysis of the target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs showed that plant hormone signal transduction, linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism-related genes were significantly enriched. In addition, we found that miR160a-5p target ARF, miR171d_1 and miR171f_3 target DELLA, miR171b-3p target ETR, and miR156a target BRI1, which played a key role in rosemary suspension cells under MeJA treatments. qRT-PCR of 12 differentially expressed miRNAs and their target genes showed a high correlation between the RNA-seq and the qRT-PCR result. Amplification culture of rosemary suspension cells in a 5 L stirred bioreactor showed that cell biomass accumulation in the bioreactor was less than that in the shake flask under the same conditions, and the whole cultivation period was extended to 14 d. Taken together, MeJA promoted the synthesis of the active compounds in rosemary suspension cells in a wide concentration range via concentration-dependent differential expression patterns. In this present study, Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil, and its major component 1,8-cineole was evaluated in vitro for angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), as well as for 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme inhibitory activity. The essential oil composition was confirmed both by GC-FID and GC/MS, where 1,8-cineole (62.7%), α-pinene (12.6 %), and camphor (8.3 %) were identified as the main constituents. Activity studies were performed at concentrations of 20 µg/mL for essential oil, and 5 µg/mL for the major compound 1,8-cineole, which were compared experimentally with standards. The essential oil was evaluated using a fluorometric multiplate based enzyme inhibition kit, where the ACE2 inhibition of Rosmarinus aetheroleum was 20%, while the 5-LOX inhibition was observed as 81.1%, respectively. In addition, the major constituent 1,8-cineole also showed remarkable ACE2 inhibition with 89.2%, and 5-LOX inhibition with 37.2%, respectively. As a result, the cineole chemotype rosemary essential oil, and its major constituent 1,8-cineol may have antiviral potential applications against coronaviruses due to ACE2 enzyme inhibition with anti-inflammatory effects. This paper focuses on microwave power (180, 300, 450, 600 and 800 W) effect on the quality and composition of rosemary leaves essential oils obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME). The results were compared to the effect of conventional hydrodistillation (HD). The analyses revealed 29 compounds for all extracts. α-pinene, camphor, borneol and (E)-caryophyllene were the major constituents, depending on extraction parameters. The antioxidant assay showed that the lowest value of the median inhibitory concentration (IC50) was for SFME 180. The statistical assessment allowed the possibility to distinguish a new simple approach to evaluate the synergistic and antagonistic effects between essential oils constituents on the antiradical activity. Results exhibit the interest in microwave power impact on essential oils extraction. This constitutes the novelty of this study, which is the possibility of improving the quality of the extract by adjusting the abundance of target compounds characterized by a strong antioxidant effect. Objectives: Rosemary has been broadly used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries due to having different groups of main secondary metabolites (phytochemicals). There are many ways to reach the aim of the maximum percentage of active compounds. Regarding the importance of the essential oil (EO) and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, as well as ease of the harvesting time control, these factors were selected in this study although the variations of the chemical content of rosemary were evaluated during one day contrary to previous reports. Materials and Methods: The fresh aerial parts of the cultivated rosemary were hand-harvested in winter at three different times (i.e., before sunrise, at noon, and after sunset) and then dried at 30°C. Each sample was submitted to the Clevenger-type apparatus for the isolation of the EO. The dried EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC)/flame ionization detector (FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and total hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives were determined by the UV/Vis spectrophotometer. Finally, the results were validated by the ANOVA test. Results: The maximum (3.65%) and minimum (1.61%) of the total EO were obtained before the sunrise and after the sunset with 24 and 26 components, respectively. In addition, the results of GC/MS revealed that 1, 8-cineole, α-pinene, and camphor are the three most dependable components in the EO to the harvesting time. The contents of α-pinene and 1,8-cineole reduced from 32.8% to 23.0% and from 23.6% to 10.5% although the camphor percentage increased from 2.7% to 9.8% in the variation of the harvesting time from before the sunrise to after the sunset. In contrary to the EO, UV/Vis spectrophotometry results showed that hydroxycinnamic acid derivative contents were undependable over different harvesting times. Conclusions: Based on this investigation, rosemary can change their component in some groups, and thus the harvesting time can be optimized based on our needs.

In this present study, Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil and its new microemulsions (MEs) were evaluated both for the in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity. The essential oil composition was verified initially both by GC‐FID and GC/MS, where camphor (19.5%), 1,8‐cineol (12%), and verbenone (11.1%) were characterized as the main constituents. A titration method was used and utilized to formulate the MEs. The preparation was formulated using isopropyl myristate as an oil phase, where sorbitan monolaurate and macrogol‐glycerol ricinoleate were used as surfactants. In the same system, ethanol was utilized as co‐surfactant and distilled water as aqueous phase. A total of 0.1% (w/w) of R. officinalis essential oil was dissolved within the formulation, and evaluated for characteristic parameters such as viscosity, pH, electrical conductivity, refractive index, polydispersity index (PDI), droplet size, and zeta potential, respectively. The pH value was 6.2, where the average microemulsion droplet size was 4.58 ± 0.137 nm; the PDI value was found as 0.219 ± 0.016. The viscosity of the microemulsion was determined as 6.93 ± 0.015 cP. The conductivity of MEs was found as 10 μS/cm; finally, the zeta potential was determined as 0.391 ± 0.012 mV. The antimicrobial potential of the preparations was compared using the in vitro broth microdilution, and poisoned PDA assay. A significant increase in the anti‐Candidal activity of the micro‐emulsified essential oil (15.6 μg/ml) was observed, however, the antibacterial susceptibility was rather low at the tested concentrations. In addition, the novel microemulsion preparation significantly inhibited mycelial growth of the plant pathogens used in the study, suggesting its selective antifungal potential. The aim of this study is to improve extraction of biologically active compounds (BACs) found in Rosmarinus officinalis L. from Algeria country using green extraction process. The effect of the main process variables (time, ethanol concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio) on maceration efficiency has been studied using Factorial Design (FD) to verify the single factors effects. Total Polyphenol Content (TPC) and Total Flavonoids Content (TFC) were measured to control the maceration efficiency in different experimental conditions. The iso-response curves and the response contours have been exploited. The best experimental results were 0.15 g/mL, 50 %, 1hour and 0.15 g/mL, 50 %, 72hours for TPC and TFC respectively. The values of TPC and TFC were 2.5 mg GAE/g DW and 1 mg QE/g DW respectively. These results were in perfect agreement with the expected theoretical model. The relationship between the TPC and TFC provides a high correlation coefficient (0.82).

Küresel ısınmadan kaynaklanan iklim değişimi ve hızlı nüfus artışına bağlı olarak tüketimin yükselmesi doğal kaynaklardan suyun azalmasına neden olarak varlığını tehdit etmektedir. Dünyada kullanılabilir suyun büyük bir bölümü tarımda değerlendirildiğinden bitkilerin su ihtiyacının en doğru ve ekonomik şeklide karşılanması gerekmektedir. Bu bağlamda da suyun verimli ve ekonomik kullanılmasını sağlayan yöntemlerden biri olarak su tutucu polimer (SAP) uygulaması karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Araştırmada, su tutucu polimer SAP A200’ün farklı dozları [% 0 (kontrol), % 0,2, % 0,4 ve % 0,6 v/v] geleneksel (toprak) ve topraksız tarım yetiştirme ortamlarına [torf, perlit ve torf:perlit (1:1) v/v] uygulanmıştır. SAP A200 dozlarının Anadolu Sığla Ağacı (Liquidambar orientalis Mill.) ve Biberiye (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) türlerinin bitki gelişimine etkisinin belirlemesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma tesadüf parselleri deneme desenine göre 3 tekerrürlü olarak kurulmuştur. Bitki gelişim özelliklerini belirlemek amacıyla bitki boyu, gövde çapı, kök uzunluğu, kök kalınlığı, kök ile sürgün yaş ve kuru ağırlıkları belirlenmiştir. Araştırmadaki iki tür için, tüm SAP dozlarının bitki gelişim parametrelerini olumlu yönde etkilediği ve en yüksek değerlerin % 0,6 SAP A200 uygulamasında tespit edildiği gözlemlenmiştir. Toprak dışındaki tüm yetiştirme ortamlarında bitki gelişim değerlerinin daha yüksek olduğu ve en iyi sonuçların torf:perlit ortamında gerçekleştiği saptanmıştır.

The chemical profiles of Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oils, collected from five distinct geographical regions in Palestine, were determined using GC-MS. The major phytochemical classes of R. officinalis EOs were monoterpene hydrocarbon (24.81–78.75%) and oxygenated monoterpenoids (19.01–73.78%), with 1,8-cineole (4.81–37.83%), α-pinene (13.07–51.36%), and camphor (11.95–24.30%) being the most abundant components of the studied oils. Using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of EOs revealed that EO from the Jenin region had the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 10.23 ± 0.11 µg/mL, followed by samples from Tulkarm (IC50 = 37.15 ± 2.3 µg/mL) and Nablus (IC50= 38.9 ± 0.45 µg/mL). With MICs of 12.5, 12.5, 6.25, 6.25, and 6.25 µg/mL against MRSA, S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumonia, and P. vulgaris, respectively, the EO extracted from the Jenin region of Palestine had the greatest antibacterial activity. Furthermore, EOs from Jenin and Nablus demonstrated stronger anti-candida action than the pharmaceutical formulation Fluconazole, with MICs of 0.781, 0.781, and 1.56 µg/mL, respectively.

The antibiotics are generally regarded as the first choice approach to treat dairy mastitis, targeting the public health problems associated with the food safety and the emergence of antibioticresistant bacteria. The objective of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of ursolic acid (UA) when used to treat Staphylococcus aureus and other isolates associated with bovine mastitis and to clarify the mechanistic basis for these effects. The bacteriostatic properties of UA extracted from Rosmarinus officinalis L. at four different purity levels were assessed by calculating minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values, while the synergistic effects of combining 98% UA with antibiotics were evaluated by measuring the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI). Changes in biofilm formation and the growth curves of the clinical isolates were assessed to clarify the bacteriostatic effect of UA. Furthermore, the cell wall integrity, protein synthesis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were assessed to determine the antibacterial mechanism of UA treatment. Ultimately, UA was revealed to exhibit robust activity against Gram-positive bacteria including S. aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (ATCC27957), Streptococcus agalactiae (ATCC13813), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC29212), and Streptococcus mutans (ATCC25175). However, it did not affect Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922). The MIC values of UA preparations that were 98, 50, 30, and 10% pure against S. aureus were 39, 312, 625, and 625 μg/mL, respectively, whereas the corresponding MIC for E. coli was >5,000 μg/mL. The minimum bactericidal concentrations of 98% UA when used to treat three clinical S. aureus isolates (S4, S5, and S6) were 78, 78, and 156 μg/mL, respectively. Levels of biofilm formation for clinical S. aureus isolates decreased with increasing 98% UA concentrations. Above the MIC dose, UA treatment resulted in the dissolution of bacterial cell walls and membranes, with cells becoming irregularly shaped and exhibiting markedly impaired intracellular protein synthesis. S. aureus treated with 98% UA was able to rapidly promote intracellular ROS biogenesis. Essential oil from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) leaves was isolated by conventional hydrodistillation using hydromodulus of 1/15 m/v and by distillation after the plant material pretreatment with 10% v/v aqueous solution of natural deep eutectic solvent glyceline. Qualitative and quantitative composition of the oil was determined by GC/MS and GC/FID analyses, while its antioxidant activity was investigated by DPPH assay. The yield of the essential oil was higher after the pretreatment of the leaves. The distillation method affected the quantitative composition of essential oil, but not its qualitative composition. The essential oil from the pretreated leaves had a higher content of camphor, verbenone and borneol (33.3%, 12.2% and 8.3%, respectively) and better antioxidant activity than the oil obtained by classical hydrodistillation. The advantage of the pretreatment method is the effective improvement of the extraction efficiency of rosemary essential oil from rosemary leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, Rosmarinus officinalis L. (ROL) essential oil extracted from the plant was initially introduced as a green anti-corrosion agent for mild steel (MS) in a 1 M HCl solution. The components of the extract were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and UV–Vis method. Gravimetric and electrochemical techniques (EIS and PDP) demonstrated that ROL inhibited steel corrosion by 90 % at a concentration of 1.5 g/l. The PDP experiment indicated that ROL essential oil acted as a mixed-type inhibitor with a cathodic predominance. The morphological and elemental characteristics of the metal surface were examined using SEM and EDX, revealing the formation of a corrosion-resistant film on the metal surface. The inhibited corrosive solutions were characterised before and after immersing MS using UV–visible spectrophotometry, indicating the possibility of iron-ROL complex formation.
