The radial neutron camera (RNC) is a key ITER diagnostic system designed to measure the uncollided 14- and 2.5-MeV neutrons from deuterium-tritium (DT) and deuterium-deuterium (DD) fusion reactions, through an array of detectors covering a full poloidal plasma section along collimated lines of sight (LoS). Its main objective is the assessment of the neutron emissivity/alpha source profile and the total neutron source strength, providing spatially resolved measurements of several parameters needed for fusion power estimation, plasma control, and plasma physics studies. The present RNC layout is composed of two fan-shaped collimating structures viewing the plasma radially through vertical slots in the diagnostic shielding module (DSM) of ITER Equatorial Port 1 (EP01): the ex-port subsystem and the in-port one. The ex-port subsystem, devoted to the plasma core coverage, extends from the Port Interspace to the Bioshield Plug: it consists of a massive shielding unit hosting two sets of collimators lying on different toroidal planes, leading to a total of 16 interleaved LoS. The in-port system consists of a cassette, integrated inside the port plug DSM, containing two detectors per each of the six LoS looking at the plasma edges. The in-port system must guarantee the required measurement performances in critical operating conditions in terms of high radiation levels, given its proximity to the plasma neutron source. This article presents an updated neutronic analysis based on the latest design of the in-port system and port plug. It has been performed by means of the Monte Carlo MCNP code and provides nuclear loads on the in-port RNC during normal operating conditions (NOC) and inputs for the measurement performance analysis.

As a demonstration fusion power plant, EU DEMO has to prove the maturity of fusion technology and its viability for electricity production. The central requirements for DEMO rest on its capability to generate significant net electric power to the grid (300 MW to 500 MW) safely and consistently. Plant availability and lifetime will approach that of a commercial fusion power plant. Operating at such regimes presents many complex challenges, of which one is plasma exhaust. To mitigate the risk that the implementation in preceding experimental devices, namely ITER, does not extrapolate to the requirement of DEMO, alternative solutions must be sought. The investigation of alternative divertor configurations was born out of this motive, seeking to resolve a ‘critical’ challenge for the realisation of DEMO. In this paper, we study the neutronics performance of three concepts: Single Null (SN), Super-X (SX) and X-divertor (XD). This is the first time a preliminary analysis of alternative configurations to the SN baseline has been performed. The shielding proposals and design recommendations presented herein should be integrated with other engineering and physics constraints in future iterations of the chosen divertor concept.

A conceptual design and performance studies for a collimated neutron flux monitor and neutron spectrometer for the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility are presented. This study is based on the single-null divertor configuration and for “Half Power” and “Full power” scenarios with 15 MW of negative-ion NBI, 29 MW of ECH and 3 MW of ICRF heating with a maximum neutron yield of 1.5 × 10 17 s − 1 . Fast ion distributions (both from auxiliary heating systems and fusion born) have been simulated in TRANSP/NUBEAM and the corresponding neutron energy spectra have been calculated using DRESS. Synthetic diagnostics have been implemented to determine the neutron fluxes and spectra at the detector location. Neutron emissivity profiles, plasma position, core ion temperature and the ratio of thermal and non-thermal D ion populations can be obtained with good accuracy and time resolution.

The Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) will be a superconductive machine that aims at studying the power exhaust issue in a DEMO relevant environment. A significant power across the separatrix (compared to the radius of the machine), PSep/R ≅15 MW/m is of primary importance to fulfill this requirement and it can be obtained by injecting to the plasma up to 45 MW of additional power. This amount of power will be reached with a mix of Heating and Current Drive (HCD) systems: Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH), Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) and Negative Neutral Beam Injection (NNBI). Power supply and wave generators of HCD will be hosted in remote-control buildings around the DTT Tokamak hall, and thus several ducts have been designed to connect the systems to the machine. The evacuated transmission lines will pass through dedicated holes in the main building making almost empty and big penetrations which cause a large neutron streaming through the walls. This work is devoted to a three-dimensional neutronics study, in support of the DTT licensing procedure, addressing the neutron and gamma streaming through the ECRH penetrations in order to optimize and determine the effectiveness of several proposed shielding options required to protect workers, population and auxiliary systems. Neutron and gamma transport simulations were carried out with the MCNP5 Monte Carlo code. Surface sources of neutrons and gammas have been used to propagate the radiation outside the penetrations. The ADVANTG hybrid transport code has been also used for variance reduction techniques in order to obtain statistically significant results in regions located several meters away from the plasma source. The results of the calculations are presented and discussed as well as the effectiveness of the proposed options to mitigate the radiation streaming and to reduce the doses outside the tokamak hall.

In a demonstrational fusion power plant (DEMO), divertor is supposed to protect vacuum vessel and superconducting magnets against neutron flux in the bottom region of the vessel. The vessel is subject to a strict design limit in irradiation damage dose and the magnets in nuclear heating power, respectively. Thus, the DEMO divertor must have the capability to protect sufficiently the vessel and the magnets against neutron flux being substantially stronger than in ITER. In this paper, a first systematic neutronics study for the European DEMO divertor is reported. Results of the extensive assessment of key nuclear loading features (nuclear heating, irradiation damage & helium production) are presented for two optional concepts, namely, dome and shielding liner including minor geometrical variants. The shielding performance of the two competing design options is discussed together with the case of a bare cassette (no shielding), particularly in terms of damage dose compared with the design limits specified for the European DEMO. It was found that both the dome and shielding liner were able to significantly reduce the nuclear loads in the cassette body and the vessel. The maximum damage dose at the end of the lifetime remained subcritical for the cassette body for both cases whereas it exceeded the limit for the vessel under the dome, but only locally on the surface underneath the pumping duct. But, the damage could be reduced below the limit for the vessel by increasing the size of the dome or by deploying the shielding liner. The most critical feature was the excessive damage occurring in the own body of the shielding components where the maximum damage dose in the steel heat sink of the dome and the shielding liner far exceeded the design limit at the end of the lifetime.

The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides U , U and Pu , on Am and Na , Ni , Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy., Acknowledgements The authors would like to thank all contributors to the JEFF project that shared their insights and provided their specific input for the present JEFF-3.3 evaluation and its immediate predecessors JEFF-3.2 and JEFF-3.1.2.

The nuclear heat loads due to gamma rays emitted from the decay of 16N and delayed neutrons from17N, generated by the activation of water in cooling circuits, are critical for ITER design. The assessment of nuclear heating from activated water is complex; it requires temporal and spatial dependent transport and activation calculations taking into account variation of irradiation, water flow conditions and cooling circuits’ parameters. A water activation experiment has been recently conducted at the14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) in order to validate the methodology for water activation assessment used for ITER and to reduce the safety factors applied to the calculation results, which have a large impact on the schedule, commissioning and licensing. Water circulating inside an ITER First Wall (FW) mock-up was irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons and then measured using a large CsI scintillator detector. The system consists of a closed water loop where the cooling water, transiting through an ITER FW mock-up, is irradiated by FNG. The induced 16N activity via 14 MeV neutrons interactions with 16O via the 16O(n,p)16N reaction is measured in a dedicated counting station via an expansion volume. The water then passes to a much larger holding delay tank, and after several 16N half-lives decay time, it is then recirculated and exposed again to neutrons in the ITER First Wall (FW) mock-up. The measured 16N activity is obtained measuring the emitted characteristic 6.13 and 7.12 MeV gamma-rays. Calculations were performed in an accurate model of the FW mock-up using the MCNP Monte Carlo code and FENDL-3.1 nuclear data library to obtain the predicted flux impinging on the water. The EASY-2007 inventory code was used to predict the 16N activity. In this work, a comparison between measurements and calculations is reported together with associated uncertainty analysis.

Three-dimensional neutronics, activation and shutdown dose rate analyses were performed with MCNP5 Monte Carlo code, FISPACT-II inventory code and Advanced D1S dynamic tool for the design and licensing of Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT). Advanced shielding concepts and mitigation strategies have been studied to guarantee sufficient protection of the superconducting coils and to reduce the streaming and the neutron-induced radioactivity. The present nuclear design study provides main outcomes for the loads assessment, shielding and materials requirements and on maintenance strategy and storage of activated components.

Water activated by 14 MeV neutrons emits both high energy gammas from 16N and delayed neutrons from 17N. The isotopes 16,17N are produced through the 16O(n,p)16N (T1/2 = 7.13 s) and 17O(n,p)17N (T1/2 = 4.1 s) reactions, respectively. These sources of radiation represent one of the main issues for ITER having large impact on the design of the machine and on the qualification of components. To validate the calculation methodology used for ITER and to reduce the safety factors applied to the calculation results a water activation experiment was commissioned by F4E to ENEA and performed at the 14 MeV Frascati neutron generator (FNG). The experimental set-up consisted of a closed water loop, about 40 m long, where the cooling water, while transiting through an ITER FW mock-up, was irradiated by the D-T neutrons produced at FNG. 6.73 MeV gamma-rays from 16N and delayed (fast) neutrons from 17N were measured using a large CsI gamma-ray detector and an array of absolutely calibrated 3He detectors, respectively. This paper reports on the measurements of the delayed neutrons emission from 17N. The calibration of the 3He detector array and the experimental set-up are first discussed. Then the experimental results (E) for the delayed neutrons as well as the comparison with the calculation (C) performed using the MCNP Monte Carlo code (coupled to the FENDL3.1 data library) and the EASY-2007 inventory code are presented. The C/E ratio results close to unity, however it is affected by a very large error (> ±60 %) to be ascribed mainly to the uncertainty on the nuclear data used for calculation.

The Divertor Tokamak Test facility is an Italian experimental facility under design and construction at ENEA C.R. Frascati. The main goal of DTT is to provide an integrated environment, relevant to DEMO, where testing possible solution to the power exhaust problem in a tokamak (like for example: i) Plasma facing components technology ; ii) Plasma and divertor shape; iii) impurity seeding to increase radiation). In this respect, DTT has been designed to be flexible and adopting technologies relevant to DEMO. After its initial inception in 2015, concluded with the publication of the "DTT project proposal", a complete re-baseline has been provided oncluded with the publication of the "DTT Interim Design Report" in 2019, aimed at accommodating the request of flexibility coming from the international fusion community. During 2019, the engineering integration activity has started and the first construction contracts have been signed. This paper provides an overview of the integrated design activity towards the realization of the facility within 2025.

Abstarct The Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT) will operate with d -D plasmas producing pulses lasting about 60 s and producing a neutron yield up to 1.5 × 1017 n/s. Due to the high neutron yield, a significant activation of the structures and residual radioactivity after shut-down will be present. Consequently, DTT will need a robust radiation protection system to prevent undue worker and population exposure. The objectives of this system must be met during normal operation, maintenance, decommissioning and in emergency situations, thus several safety features must be routinely guarantee, among which the radiation monitoring system is probably the most crucial. This paper presents the general requirements of this monitoring system, giving some details about the preferred characteristics for the involved devices and monitors. The monitoring system shall be composed by portable instruments, passive ambient dosimeters and a limited number of fixed active measuring stations, suitable to detect and record the appropriate dosimetric quantities both for neutrons and photons. The active measuring stations and the passive dosimeters will constitute two monitoring networks designed in such a way to cover the area of interest to radiological survey around DTT.

This paper presents the engineering aspects of the design review of the Italian DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test facility), illustrating the rationale for the design choices and focusing on the main differences with respect to the original proposal.

In the framework of EUROfusion Work Package International Cooperation R&D activities, a close collaboration has been started among University of Palermo, ENEA Brasimone and ENEA Frascati for the development of the Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) Breeding Blanket (BB) concept. In this context, a research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo in order to investigate the influence of First Wall (FW) cooling water configuration on the nuclear response of the WCLL BB under irradiation in EU-DEMO, in order to gain useful indications for the WCLL BB pre-conceptual designs. To this end, three-dimensional nuclear analyses have been performed by MCNP5 v. 1.6 Monte Carlo code. A semi-heterogeneous MCNP model of the WCLL BB “single module segment” concept has been used and its nuclear response has been assessed for different FW configurations, centring the attention, mainly, on global quantities as nuclear power deposition and tritium breeding ratio. The results obtained provided some information on the nuclear features of the WCLL BB concept, useful for its design optimisation. The outcomes of this parametric study are herein presented and critically discussed.

The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility is a project proposed by an Italian consortium aimed to test the physics and technology of various alternative divertor concepts in order to design a heat and power exhaust system able to withstand the large loads expected in the divertor of a DEMO fusion power plant. The DTT machine is expected to produce up to 1.0 × 1017 2.5-MeV neutrons per second through deuterium-deuterium (DD) reactions with a significant 14 MeV neutron production (1% of the total yield) due to triton burn-up during the high-performance phase. This work is devoted to a preliminary three-dimensional shielding study to optimize the DTT building for licensing purposes. Neutron and gamma transport simulations were carried-out with MCNP5 Monte Carlo code using weight windows generated with ADVANTG hybrid code. Three-dimensional model of the DTT machine and building has been developed to assess the spatial distributions of the neutron and gamma fluxes, spectra and effective doses inside and outside the tokamak hall. The wall thickness (in the range 150–250 cm) has no impact on satisfying dose limits for the public, but is important when satisfying limits for workers.

One relevant experiment selected for the DT phase at JET is the irradiation of the HCPB-TBM mock-up of ITER which will be located in front of the horizontal port of Octant-8. The neutronics performances of the HCPB-TBM will be studied through independent measurement techniques and the experimental quantities compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulation. Of paramount importance is the measurement of the tritium production rate (TPR) to be performed by using a single crystal diamond detector covered with a thin layer of 6LiF (LiDia detector). This requires the knowledge of the 6Li mass. In this work the 6Li mass calibration of the selected LiDia detector was first performed in a well characterized thermal neutron flux spectrum. Furthermore, a performance test of the detector was carried out by locating it inside a polyethylene phantom irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons at the Frascati Neutron generator. The experimental set-up was accurately simulated by using the MCNP5 code and the TPR compared to the measured one. The goal was to point out and assess the issues with the measurement method.

The water-cooled lithium-lead breeding blanket is in the pre-conceptual design phase. It is a candidate option for European DEMO nuclear fusion reactor. This breeding blanket concept relies on the liquid lithium-lead as breeder-multiplier, pressurized water as coolant and EUROFER as structural material. Current design is based on DEMO 2017 specifications. Two separate water systems are in charge of cooling the first wall and the breeding zone: thermo-dynamic cycle is 295–328 °C at 15.5 MPa. The breeder enters and exits from the breeding zone at 330 °C. Cornerstones of the design are the single module segment approach and the water manifold between the breeding blanket box and the back supporting structure. This plate with a thickness of 100 mm supports the breeding blanket and is attached to the vacuum vessel. It is in charge to withstand the loads due to normal operation and selected postulated initiating events. Rationale and progresses of the design are presented and substantiated by engineering evaluations and analyses. Water and lithium lead manifolds are designed and integrated with the two consistent primary heat transport systems, based on a reliable pressurized water reactor operating experience, and six lithium lead systems. An application of the ADVANTG (AutomateD VAriaNce reducTion Generator) code, which combines the Denovo deterministic transport solver with the MCNP (Monte Carlo N-Particle) Monte Carlo code, to the JET3-NEXP (Joint European Torus work package 3) streaming benchmark experiment is presented in this paper. An ADVANTG input parameter variation analysis was performed in order to find optimal input parameters for the hybrid two-step workflow. ADVANTG-accelerated calculations from three different institutions (JSI (Jožef Stefan Institute), ORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and CCFE (Culham Centre for Fusion Energy)) were compared to analog MCNP simulations confirming no bias is introduced due to the use of ADVANTG. Additionally, ADVANTG-accelerated MCNP numerical simulations of the neutron fluence were compared to experimental results performed in 2016 at JET using thermo-luminescence detectors. Calculation/Experiment values from 0.7 to 13 were calculated for the experimental positions in the SW (southwest) labyrinth and SE (southeast) chimney. Using ADVANTG-generated variance reduction parameters, speed-up factors of up to 1100 relative to analog calculations were achieved. The MCNP statistical tests on track length estimator volume averaged tallies were consistently passed for all experimental locations with ADVANTG-generated variance reduction parameters. These results demonstrate that ADVANTG is capable of accelerating tally convergence at locations far from the source in streaming-dominated transport simulations of complex fusion facility models.

The conceptual design activity of the Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (DEMO) is in progress in the Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme, within the EUROfusion Consortium. In this work neutronics studies, fundamental for the nuclear design of DEMO, are presented for a novel design of the lower port (LP). Two possible configurations of the LP have been investigated: the vacuum pumping port, with the pumping unit located inside the port, and an empty port designed for remote handling. For both configurations 3-dimensional Monte Carlo calculations have been performed with MCNP5 to assess the neutron flux inside and around the port and the nuclear heating in sensitive components, such as the toroidal field coil conductor, the vacuum pumps, the shielding elements and the port closure plate. Different shielding configurations have been considered, by adding shielding blocks at the lower port entrance. Single and double wall port walls and closure plates with different thickness have been studied to reduce nuclear loads and neutron flux. Nuclear quantities under analysis were found to be within the limit for all the components, with the exception of the nuclear heating on the toroidal field coils. The absence of any shield of the divertor cassette pumping duct, as in the DEMO 2017 baseline configuration, is responsible for a huge amount of radiation streaming inside the pumping duct that can cause the excess of heating on the coil conductor. The use of a liner, or of an equivalent shielding component, is proposed, but further improvements are needed to keep the nuclear loads on the coil conductor within the limit.

The EUROfusion Work Package JET3 programme, established to enable the technological exploitation of the JET experiments over the next years, includes, within the NEXP subproject, a novel Shutdown Dose Rate (SDR) experiment. Considering its ITER-relevance, SDR experiments at JET represent a unique opportunity to validate the numerical tools for ITER nuclear analysis, through the comparison between numerical predictions and measured quantities (C/E). Within this framework, two active gamma dosimeters based on spherical air-vented ionization chambers (ICs) have been installed in ex-vessel positions close to the horizontal ports of the tokamak in Octants 1 and 2. The first JET campaign exploited in the novel SDR experiment is the latest 5-week Deuterium-Deuterium campaign (c36b), which achieved the best results in recent years in terms of high power operation. The present work is dedicated to the analysis of dose rate measurements carried out during this campaign and after shutdown. Proper correction factors are evaluated and applied to the instrument reading, while influence quantities and error sources are analyzed in order to calculate the overall experimental uncertainty.

Measurements of neutron streaming through penetrations in biological shields are being carried out at JET fusion device by means of thermoluminescence (TL) detectors with the objective to validate the neutronics codes and nuclear data widely applied in ITER nuclear analyses in a real fusion environment. TLDs response due to the neutron component of the radiation field is related to the neutron fluence in a well-defined neutron energy spectrum. Therefore, a TLDs calibration in real fusion radiation fields is necessary to allow neutron fluence from TL measurements at JET to be more precisely calculated. Hence, a MCP-N and MCP-7 TLDs produced at the IFJ PAN in Kraków were calibrated at the ENEA facilities of Frascati and Casaccia laboratories. The obtained results have been analysed and new calibration factors are proposed. The detection system based on TLDs developed and calibrated for JET experiments can then be generally applied not only to fusion neutron fields, but also to ITER to monitor the neutron fluence outside the biological shield. © 2018

A novel Shutdown dose rate benchmark experiment has been performed at Joint European Torus (JET) machine during the last high performance Deuterium-Deuterium (DD) campaign in preparation of future ...

The present paper addresses the impact of the divertor option on the nuclear performances of the Demonstration fusion reactor (DEMO). As the effect of the number and size of the divertor has been already evaluated, in this work the focus has been posed on the composition in terms of amount of cooling inside the divertor cassette. Transport responses, as the Tritium breeding ratio (TBR), neutron and gamma fluxes and spectra inside the plasma chamber, as well as activation responses such as shutdown dose rate, decay gamma fluxes and heating have been evaluated for two different blanket concepts of the future European DEMO reactor: DCLL and WCLL. Three different divertor compositions have been tested demonstrating the importance of this component not only locally but in the global radiation field. The transport analysis has been performed with the Monte Carlo code MCNP5 and the JEFF3.1.1 and JEFF3.2 data libraries. The activation responses calculated using Advanced D1S method have been recently assessed and summarized in the present paper. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

The assessment of the Shutdown Dose Rate (SDR) due to neutron activation is a major safety issue for fusion devices and in the last decade several benchmark experiments have been conducted at JET during Deuterium-Deuterium experiments for the validation of the numerical tools used in ITER nuclear analyses. The future Deuterium-Tritium campaign at JET (DTE2) will provide a unique opportunity to validate the codes under ITER-relevant conditions through the comparison between numerical predictions and measured quantities (C/E). For this purpose, a novel SDR experiment, described in the present work, is in preparation in the frame of the WPJET3-NEXP subproject within EUROfusion Consortium. The experimental setup has been accurately designed to reduce measurement uncertainties; spherical air-vented ionization chambers (ICs) will be used for on-line ex-vessel decay gamma dose measurements during JET shutdown following DT operations and activation foils have been selected for measuring the neutron fluence near ICs during operations. Active dosimeters (based on ICs) have been calibrated over a broad energy range (from about 30 keV to 1.3 MeV) with X and gamma reference beam qualities. Neutron irradiation tests confirmed the capability of active dosimeters of performing on-line decay gamma dose rate measurements, to follow gamma dose decay at the end of neutron irradiation as well as insignificant activation of the ICs. Since 2014 preconceptual design activities for European DEMO divertor have been conducted as an integrated, interdisciplinary R&D effort in the framework of EUROfusion Consortium. Consisting of two subproject areas, ‘Cassette’ and ‘Target’, this divertor project has the objective to deliver a holistic preconceptual design concept together with the key technological solutions to materialize the design. In this paper, a brief overview on the recent results from the subproject ‘Cassette’ is presented. In this subproject, the overall cassette system is engineered based on the load analysis and specification. The preliminary studies covered multi-physical analyses of neutronic, thermal, hydraulic, electromagnetic and structural loads. In this paper, focus is put on the neutronics, thermohydraulics and electromagnetic analysis.

In the EU DEMO design (Romanelli, 2012; Federici et al., 2014), due to the large number of complex systems inside the tokamak vessel it is of vital importance to address the in-vessel integration at an early stage in the design process. In the EU DEMO design, after a first phase in which the different systems have been developed independently based on the defined baseline DEMO configuration, an effort has been made to define the interface requirements and to propose the strategies for the mechanical integration of the auxiliary heating and fuelling systems into the Vacuum Vessel and the Breeding Blanket. This work presents the options studied, the engineering solutions proposed, and the issues highlighted for the mechanical in-vessel integration of the DEMO fuelling lines, auxiliaries heating systems, and diagnostics. International audience; The EUROfusion Consortium develops a conceptual design of a fusion power demonstrator (DEMO) in the framework of the European Horizon 2020 innovation and research program. Key issues for DEMO are tritium self-sufficiency and heat removal for conversion into electricity. These functions are filled by the breeding blankets surrounding the plasma chamber. The Helium Cooled Lithium Lead (HCLL) blanket is one of the concepts which are investigated for DEMO. It uses the liquid lithium lead eutectic as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier and helium gas as coolant for both the Eurofer structure and the breeder. Within the EUROfusion organisation CEA is in charge for the design of the HCLL blanket for DEMO including the nuclear design analyses.This paper presents results of the nuclear analysis carried out in 2014 at CEA with the TRIPOLI-4 Monte Carlo code. In a previous analysis of the HCLL DEMO, conducted by ENEA within the EFDA work programme 2013, the MCNP code was applied with a detailed 3D Monte Carlo model describing the HCLL blanket modules (stiffening grid, cooling plate, manifold, back plates, etc.). This MCNP model was converted into a TRIPOLI-4 geometry model for performing the nuclear analysis at CEA with the objective to demonstrate consistency between the MCNP and TRIPOLI results. A very good agreement was obtained for all of the relevant nuclear responses (neutron wall loading, tritium breeding ratio, nuclear heating, etc.), showing the validity of CEA's nuclear analysis approach for the European DEMO based on TRIPOLI-4.

The present paper is devoted to a first assessment of the DEMO diagnostics systems and controls in the context of pulsed and steady state reactor design under study in Europe. In particular, the main arguments treated are: (i) The quantities to be measured in DEMO and the requirements for the measurements; (ii) the present capability of the diagnostic and control technology, determining the most urgent gaps, and (iii) the program and strategy of the research and development (R&D) needed to fill the gaps. Burn control, magnetohydrodynamic stability, and basic machine protection require improvements to the ITER technology, and moderated efforts in R&D can be dedicated to infrared diagnostics (reflectometry, electron cyclotron emission, polarimetry) and neutron diagnostics. Metallic Hall sensors appear to be a promising candidate for magnetic measurements in the high neutron fluence and long/steady state discharges of DEMO.

One of the fundamental input parameters required for the thermo hydraulic and structural design of a divertor cassette is the operation temperature range. In the current design activities to develop European DEMO divertor in the frame of EUROfusion, reduced activation steel EUROFER97 was chosen as structural material for the divertor cassette body considering its low long-term activation and superior creep and swelling resistance under neutron irradiation (You et al., 2016) [1] . For specifying an operation temperature range (i.e. cooling condition) various, often conflicting requirements have to be considered. In this article the lower limit of allowed operation temperature window is defined for EUROFER97 for structural design of DEMO divertor cassette body. The underlying rationale and supporting experimental data from a number of previous irradiation tests are also presented. The motivation of this survey study is to explore the possibility to use EUROFER97 for water-cooled divertor cassette at temperatures below 350 °C which has been regarded as limit temperature to preserve ductility under irradiation. Based on the literature data of FTTT (Fracture Toughness Transition Temperature) calibrated by Master Curve method, it is concluded that EUROFER97 at the envisaged maximum dose of 6 dpa will have to be operated above 180 °C taking the embrittlement due to helium production into account.

This paper presents nuclear performance issues of the HCPB, HCLL, DCLL and WCLL breeder blankets, which are under development within the PPPT (Power Plant Physics and Technology) programme of EUROfusion, with the objective to assess the potential and suitability of the blankets for the application to DEMO. The assessment is based on the initial design versions of the blankets developed in 2014. The Tritium breeding potential is considered sufficient for all breeder blankets although the initial design versions of the HCPB, HCLL and DCLL blankets were shown to require further design improvements. Suitable measures have been proposed and proven to be sufficient to achieve the required Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR) ≥ 1.10. The shielding performance was shown to be sufficient to protect the super-conducting toroidal field coil provided that efficient shielding material mixtures including WC or borated water are utilized. The WCLL blanket does not require the use of such shielding materials due to a very compact blanket support structure/manifold configuration which yet requires design verification. The vacuum vessel can be safely operated over the full anticipated DEMO lifetime of 6 full power years for all blanket concepts considered.

A dedicated effort on nuclear data validation and nuclear instrumentation techniques for Test Blanket Modules (TBM) in ITER is conducted as an integral part of Fusion for Energy's (F4E) programme to ensure validated nuclear analysis capabilities for fusion technology applications. It is closely linked to nuclear data development activities, which are jointly coordinated and conducted by F4E and nuclear data consortia formed by European research institutions. The current experimental activities, an integral copper validation experiment and gas production experiments in EUROFER elements, as well as activities on the development and testing of candidate nuclear detectors for TBM in ITER and the related design integration assessment are presented in this paper. ﾩ 2014 Fusion for Energy.

The chapter deals with the use and production of tritium in tokamak fusion device. The tokamak is a torus shaped magnetic confinement device in which a combination of toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields confines the hot plasma inside a torus-shaped vacuum vessel. In a reactor it is necessary to confine the energy of sufficiently dense plasma for a time allows to an adequate fraction of the fuel to react. The most promising configuration for future controlled thermonuclear fusion reactor, at least for the first generation, is based on deuterium (D)-tritium (T) cycle in a tokamak type machine. In order to induce the D-T fusion it is necessary to overcome the mutual repulsion of the positive charges of the reacting nuclei. In thermonuclear fusion device this energyis supplied by heating the fuel at temperature higher than 10 keV. At those energies, the reactants are fully ionized and form a plasma, which must be confined to be kept away from the walls of the vessel, e.g. applying magnetic fields in a proper configuration. During the D-T fusion the products of the reactions, alpha and neutrons, undergo different behaviour.The alpha particles are trapped by the magnetic fields and transfer their energy to the plasma. Under proper conditions, this internal heating is sufficient to sustain the required temperature and the condition of ignition is reached. Conversely, the neutrons being electrically neutral particles are unaffected by magnetic fields and represent the energy "carriers". In the blanket, a proper component surrounding the vacuum vessel, the fast neutrons are slowed down and their energy is transferred, in form of heat, to a cooling medium and used to drive turbines to generate electricity. To guarantee the self-sufficiency of the reactor the tritium fuel must be produced in the blanket itself through transmutation reactions on lithium. Moreover, under neutron irradiation, the material properties are affected by elemental transmutation and nuclide activation leading to the production of unstable radionuclides, including tritium itself: it leads to a radiation hazard potential both under normal and off-normal operations. © 2013 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. A novel approach for the Monte Carlo based calculation of high resolution shutdown dose rate distributions was elaborated at KIT developing the previous R2Smesh technique. The method utilizes the MCNP code for particle transport calculations and the FISPACT code for the activity calculations providing the decay photon source distribution. The spatial distributions both of neutrons and decay photons are obtained by making use of the mesh tally technique available with MCNP5. This procedure has no limitation for the complexity of the geometry used for particle transport simulations. As a unique novelty, the present approach does not need a particle track output (PTRAC) file for the determination of the material composition in a mesh element. Instead a newly developed subroutine, linked to the MCNP code, takes care about the geometry cells, materials and their volume fractions in the mesh cell passing this information directly to the MCNP's mesh tally output file. The new approach is verified by means of benchmark calculations for JET and compared to the cell based rigorous 2 step (R2S) method. The results obtained fit very well experimental data. The successful application of the new interface to JET has demonstrated that this approach can be applied with confidence for shutdown dose rate assessments in ITER. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The assessment of radiation damage to electronics is a complex process and requires a detailed description of the full particle energy spectra, as well as a clear characterization of the quantities used to predict radiation damage. FLUKA, a multi-purpose particle interaction and transport code, is capable of calculating proton-proton and heavy ion collisions at LHC energies and beyond. It correctly describes the entire hadronic and electromagnetic particle cascade initiated by secondary particles from TeV energies down to thermal neutrons, and provides direct scoring capabilities essential to estimate in detail the possible risk of radiation damage to electronics. This paper presents the FLUKA capabilities for applications related to radiation damage to electronics, providing benchmarking examples and showing the practical applications of FLUKA at CERN facilities such as CNGS and LHC. Related applications range from the study of device effects, the detailed characterization of the radiation field and radiation monitor calibration, to the input requirements for important mitigation studies including shielding, relocation or other options.

Within the Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme in the EUROfusion Consortium design activities are currently in progress for the development of a DEMOnstration Fusion Power Plant (DEMO). The design of the machine and the integration of in-vessel components require neutronics analyses to verify the tritium self-sufficiency, the shielding requirements, and the structural integrity of its components. In particular, the effect of penetrations in the blanket and in equatorial port plug introduced by the electron cyclotron (EC) heating system, namely due to openings for the antenna waveguides (WGs), were analyzed. In this study three-dimensional MCNP calculations were conducted for the pre-conceptual designs of the EC port plugs and shielding optimization were performed in order to ensure that the DEMO design limits are not exceeded. Two configurations of the EC heating system were performed using a DEMO Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) with integrated EC configurations model of a half of the sector (i.e. 10° model) and relevant ones repeated with a full sector model (i.e. 20° model) to test the reliability of results. Additionally, the effect of the radiation on the WGs closest to the plasma was analyzed as well as the impact on Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR).

In the European fusion roadmap, reliable power handling has been defined as one of the most critical challenges for realizing a commercially viable fusion power. In this context, the divertor is the key in-vessel component, as it is responsible for power exhaust and impurity removal for which divertor target is subjected to very high heat flux loads. To this end, an integrated R&D project was launched in the EUROfusion Consortium in order to deliver a holistic conceptual design solution together with the core technologies for the entire divertor system of a DEMO reactor. The work package ‘Divertor’ consists of two project areas: ‘Cassette design and integration’ and ‘Target development’. The essential mission of the project is to develop and verify advanced design concepts and the required technologies for a divertor system being capable of meeting the physical and system requirements defined for the next-generation European DEMO reactor. In this contribution, a brief overview is presented of the works from the first project year (2014). Focus is put on the loads specification, design boundary conditions, materials requirements, design approaches, and R&D strategy. Initial ideas and first estimates are presented. © 2015 EURATOM

The water-cooled lithium-lead (PbLi) breeding blanket is one of the candidate systems considered for the implementation in the European Demonstration Power Plant (DEMO) nuclear fusion reactor. This concept employs PbLi liquid metal as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier, water pressurized at 15.5 MPa as the coolant, and EUROFER as the structural material. The current design is based on the single module segment approach and follows the requirements of the DEMO-2015 baseline design. The module is constituted by a basic toroidal-radial cell that is recursively repeated along the poloidal direction where the liquid metal flows along a radial-poloidal path. The heat generated by the fusion reactions is extracted by means of separate cooling systems for the breeding zone and the first wall. A back supporting structure is dedicated to withstand loads of the module during normal and off-normal operations. Water and PbLi manifolds are integrated with primary heat transport and tritium extraction systems. The status of the conceptual design is presented, critically discussing its rationale and main features as supported by neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, magneto-hydrodynamic, and thermo-mechanic analyses. Recent results are outlined, pointing out open issues and development needs.

The Divertor Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) of a fusion reactor are the most loaded components in terms of high heat fluxes, which, combined with high neutron irradiation, can severely compromise their thermo-mechanical and physical properties as well as their heat removal capacity. Therefore, neutronic assessment plays a key role in the design of these critical components. The aim of this work is to perform a dedicated nuclear analysis for the European DEMO divertor PFCs placed on the vertical targets, aimed to provide significant outcomes in the PFCs selection concept. In particular, the present assessment is devoted to the reference ITER-like configuration under study within the EUROfusion WPDIV-PPPT programme. Three-dimensional neutronics analyses have been performed with the MCNP5 Monte Carlo code. This work presents detailed neutronics results with heterogeneous materials constitution and actual geometry of the PFC concept. High resolution data on the nuclear heating density and neutron damage of the ITER-like PFCs placed on the divertor vertical targets, including helium production, assessed for first time for the latest DEMO design, are presented and discussed.

The paper presents an analysis of DD, TT and DT neutron streaming benchmark experiments with the recently released hybrid transport code ADVANTG (AutomateD VAriaNce reducTion Generator). ADVANTG combines the deterministic neutron transport solver Denovo with the Monte Carlo transport code MCNP via the principle of variance reduction. It automatically produces weight-window and source biasing variance reduction parameters based on the CADIS (Consistent Adjoint Driven Importance Sampling) methodology. Using this novel hybrid methodology Monte Carlo simulations of realistic complex fusion streaming geometries have become possible. In this paper the experimental results from the 2016 DD campaign using measurements with TLDs and activation foils up to 40 m from the plasma source are analyzed. New detailed models of the detector assemblies were incorporated into the JET 360° MCNP model for this analysis. In preparation of the TT and DTE2 campaigns at JET a pre-analysis for these campaigns is also presented.
