OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to establish an animal model of laryngeal burn and to investigate the temperature distribution of heated air in the upper airway. METHODS: The animal model was established by inhalation of dry heated air at 80, 160 and 320°C in 18 healthy, male, adult hybrid dogs. Time for inducing injury was set at 20min. The distribution of temperatures after heated-air inhalation was examined at different locations including the epiglottis, laryngeal vestibule, vocal folds and trachea. RESULTS: The temperatures of the heated air decreased to 47.1, 118.4 and 193.8°C at the laryngeal vestibule and to 39.3, 56.6 and 137.9°C at the lower margin of vocal folds in the 80, 160 and 320°C groups, respectively. CONCLUSION: Due to its special anatomy and functions, the larynx has different responses to dry heated air at different temperatures. The air temperature decreases markedly when the air arrives at the larynx. By contrast, the larynx has a low capacity for blocking high-temperature air and retaining heat. Background: The efficacy and safety of different oral ginkgo-based Chinese patent medicines (CPMs) regimens for hypertension patients were analyzed based on the network meta-analysis of the frequency framework., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database to gather data on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of 8 ginkgo biloba oral preparations for the treatment of hypertension. The trials included in the analysis were conducted from the inception of the databases up to September 2023. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the RoB 2.0 evaluation tool, and a reticulated meta-analysis was conducted using STATA MP 14 software. The RCTs included in this study were published studies and therefore did not require ethics committee review or patient consent., Results: We ultimately included 46 RCTs covering 8 CPMs including ginkgo biloba tablet (GBT), GB capsule (GBC), ginkgo biloba drop (GBD), ginkgo biloba ketone ester drop, Fufangyinxing capsule, fufangyinxingtongmai oral liquid, Yinxingmihuan oral liquid, Yindanxinanotong softgel capsule (YDXNT). GBD + CT demonstrated the highest effectiveness in reducing systolic blood pressure (surface under the cumulative ranking [SUCRA] = 78.7%) and improving total effective rate (SUCRA = 86.7%). GBC + CT exhibited the greatest efficacy in reducing diastolic blood pressure (SUCRA = 92.6%). GBT + CT was identified as the most effective in lowering total cholesterol (TC) (SUCRA = 100%). Additionally, YDXNT + CT demonstrated notable improvements in triglyceride levels (SUCRA = 92.2%), Nitric oxide (NO) (SUCRA = 93.9%), and ET-1 (SUCRA = 67.5%). In terms of safety, 14 studies reported the occurrence of adverse reactions with a high degree of clinical heterogeneity, which was only qualitatively analyzed in this study., Conclusion Subsections: We found that a combination of 8 ginkgo-based CPMs + CT was effective in hypertension compared with CT. The evidence showed that GBD + CT were the best in improving systolic blood pressure and total effective rate, GBC + CT improved diastolic blood pressure, GBT + CT were the most effective in improving TC, and YDXNT + CT was the most effective in improving TG, NO, and ET-1. Adverse effects were only analyzed qualitatively, and the number of adverse effects of CPMs treatment was relatively low compared to CT. Background: High-dose chemotherapy combined with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HDT/AHSCT) is used to treat lymphoma. Although AHSCT has made considerable strides and become safer, HDT-AHSCT infection continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality associated with transplantation., Objective: To characterise pathogenic bacterial infections in HDT/AHSCT-treated lymphoma patients. The prevalence of pathogenic microorganisms and the timing of foci after transplantation, along with bloodstream infection (BSI) risk factors, can help determine the need for empirical antibiotics after AHSCT., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 133 lymphoma patients treated by HDT/AHSCT from April 2017 to October 2021 at Peking University International Hospital, Beijing, China. We analyzed their clinical characteristics, microbiological distribution characteristics, and BSI risk factors in detail., Results: In order, intestinal infection (56 cases), BSI (17 cases), pulmonary (12 cases), upper respiratory tract (5 cases), and perianal (4 cases) were the most common locations of infection after HDT/AHSCT. The infection sites yielded 92 putative pathogenic pathogens, with bacteria predominating (61.96%), fungi (28.26%), viruses (5.43%), and mycoplasma (4.35%). Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) strains outnumbered gram-positive bacteria (GPB) strains (73.68%). Two strains of Escherichia coli produced extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and one strain of carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) had one strain. BSI was caused by Escherichia coli (82.35%), Intestinal mucositis (23.52%), and catheter-associated infections (11.76%). Age, CD34, pretreatment regimen, antibiotic regimen, and past chemotherapeutic agent lung damage were BSI risk variables in univariate analysis. CD34 and past chemotherapeutic drug lung damage were the primary causes of BSI after HDT/AHSCT for lymphoma., Conclusion: High-dose chemotherapy combined with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HDT/AHSCT) is used to treat lymphoma. Liver failure is a life-threatened serious disease with many complications and high mortality rate. Stem cells have been applied to replacement therapy, gene therapy and tissue engineering for its capacity of self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation. To investigate the bioactivity of the peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells (PBHSC) in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure, we isolated CD34+ cells from peripheral blood of patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure and healthy controls. After cultured it in serum-free medium (SFEM), we studied the bioactivity of CD34+ cells by observing the morphology, recording growth curve, detecting cell cycle and cell apoptosis. CD34+ cells and culture solution were collected at the time points of 3, 5, 7, 10, 12 and 14 days, and the levels of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in culture solution were detected by ELISA. Also, the expressions of pyruvate kinase muscle isoenzyme 2 (PKM2), integrin-β1 and liver-type pyruvate kinase (LPK) were detected by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence. Our results showed the bioactivity of CD34+ cells from patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure was identified to be similar with that from healthy controls. HGF, MMP-9, TNF-α and IL-6 were found in cell culture medium. RT-PCR and immunofluorescence results indicated that PKM2, Integrin-β1 expressed on CD34+ cells from patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure. In conclusion, bioactivity of CD34+ cells of patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure was demonstrated to be normal, which could secrete HGF, MMP-9, TNF-α and IL-6, promote the growth of hepatocytes, and differentiate along a direction to hepatocyte lineage., Competing Interests: None., (IJCEP Copyright © 2017.)

The martensite/parent coherent interface of Mn-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) is a significant part in the research of their martensitic transformation, reversible shape memory effect and magnetic shape memory effect. In the present work, a chemical-structural model was proposed to calculate the martensite/parent coherent interfacial energy of Mn-X (X = Cu, Fe) alloys. In this model, the coherent heterophase interfacial energy consists of chemical and structural parts. Resulting from the formation process of the heterophase interface, the chemical interfacial energy is expressed as the incremental value of bond energy, while the structural part is obtained by calculating the interfacial strain energy. The results show that the structural interfacial energy plays the chief role in the total interfacial energy, and the total interfacial energy decreases as the temperature rises when the alloy composition is fixed. In addition, the preferred orientation has noteworthy influence on the total interfacial energy. Using the proposed model, interfacial energy, interfacial entropy, interfacial enthalpy and interfacial heat capacity are found to be correlated with temperature and interface preferred orientation. Furthermore, the influences of alloy composition, modulus softening, and the index of the habit plane on the results were discussed.

Background: A Chinese medical team managed Ebola virus disease (EVD) patients in Sierra Leone from October 2014 to March 2015 and attended to 693 suspected patients, of whom 288 had confirmed disease., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of the 288 patients with confirmed disease. Clinical symptoms, manifestations, and serum viral load were analyzed and compared among the different groups for mortality and survival time., Results: Among the 288 confirmed EVD patients (149 male and 139 female, median age 28 years, and median log viral load 6.68), 98 died, 36 recovered, and 154 were lost to follow-up. Common symptoms were fever (77.78%), fatigue (64.93%), abdominal pain (64.58%), headache (62.85%), and diarrhea (61.81%). Compared to patients aged<18 years, those who were older than 40 years had a higher probability of death (odds ratio 2.855, p=0.044). Patients with a viral load of >10(6) copies/ml had a higher case fatality rate than those with <10(6) copies/ml (odds ratio 3.095, p=0.004). Cox regression showed that age, viral load, and the presence of diarrhea correlated with mortality., Conclusion: Patients with a high viral load, of older age, and with diarrhea had a higher mortality and shorter survival time., (Copyright © 2015 The Authors. Aim: To investigate the clinical features, response to corticosteroids, and prognosis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH)-induced liver failure in China., Methods: A total of 22 patients (19 female and 3 male; average age 51 ± 15 years) with AIH-induced liver failure treated in our hospital from 2004 to 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinical, biochemical and pathological characteristics of the 22 patients and responses to corticosteroid treatment in seven patients were examined retrospectively. The patients were divided into survivor and non-survivor groups, and the clinical characteristics and prognosis were compared between the two groups. The t test was used for data analysis of all categorical variables, and overall survival was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method., Results: At the time of diagnosis, mean IgG was 2473 ± 983 mg/dL, with three (18.8%) patients showing normal levels. All of the patients had elevated serum levels of antinuclear antibody (≥ 1:640). Liver histology from one patient showed diagnostic pathological changes, including massive necrosis and plasma cell infiltration. Four patients survived (18.2%) and 18 died (81.8%) without liver transplantation. The results showed that patients with low admission Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores (21.50 ± 2.08 vs 30.61 ± 6.70, P < 0.05) and corticosteroid therapy (100% vs 16.7%, P < 0.05) had better prognosis. A total of seven patients received corticosteroid therapy, of whom, four responded and survived, and the other three died. Survivors showed young age, shorter duration from diagnosis to corticosteroid therapy, low MELD score, and absence of hepatic encephalopathy at the time of corticosteroid administration. Six patients who were administered corticosteroids acquired fungal infections but recovered after antifungal therapy., Conclusion: Early diagnosis and corticosteroid therapy are essential for improving the prognosis of patients with AIH-induced liver failure without liver transplantation.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the major causes of chronic liver inflammation. Tim-3 acts as a negative regulatory molecule and plays a critical role in immune tolerance. In the current study, we investigated Tim-3 expression on peripheral monocytes and CD3+CD16/CD56+ natural killer like T (NKT-like) cells in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 52 CHB patients and 60 healthy controls. Tim-3+CD14+ cells and Tim-3+CD3+CD16/CD56+ cells were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results showed that expression of Tim-3 was significantly increased on both the monocytes and NKT-like cells in CHB patients than in controls (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001, respectively). Tim-3 levels on monocytes and NKT-like cells were further upregulated in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). In addition, we assessed the correlation of Tim-3 expression with levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Data revealed that Tim-3 expression on both monocytes and NKT-like cells was positively correlated with level of ALT (r = 0.59, P < 0.001, and r = 0.60, P < 0.001, respectively), whereas Tim-3 expression on NKT-like cells was negatively correlated with serum level of TNF-α (r = -0.54, P < 0.001) in CHB patients. Aim: To analyze the correlation between the protein expression of p16 and Rb genes in gastric carcinoma (GC), to investigate the role of p16 gene in invasion and lymph node metastasis of GC, and to examine the deletion and mutation in exon 2 of p16 gene in GC., Methods: The protein expression of p16 and Rb genes was examined by streptavidin-peroxidase conjugated method (S-P) in normal gastric mucosa, dysplastic gastric mucosa and GC. The deletion and mutation of p16 gene were examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and polymerase chain reaction single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) respectively in normal gastric mucosa and GC., Results: The positive rates of P16 and Rb protein expression respectively were 96% (77/80) and 99% (79/80) in normal gastric mucosa, 92% (45/50) and 80% (40/50) in dysplastic gastric mucosa, 48% (58/122) and 60% (73/122) in GC. The positive rates of P16 and Rb protein expression in GC were significantly lower than that in normal gastric mucosa and dysplastic gastric mucosa (P<0.05). The positive rate of P16 protein expression in mucoid carcinoma (10%, 1/10) was significantly lower than that in poorly differentiated carcinoma (51%, 21/41), undifferentiated carcinoma (58%, 15/26) and signet ring cell carcinoma (62%, 10/16) (P<0.05). The positive rates of P16 protein in 30 cases of paired primary and lymph node metastatic GC were 47% (14/30) and 17% (5/30) respectively, being significantly lower in the later than in the former (P<0.05). There was no mutation in exon 2 of p16 gene in the 25 freshly resected primary GCs. But five cases in the 25 freshly resected primary GCs displayed deletion in exon 2 of p16 gene. The positive rate of both P16 and Rb proteins was 16% (14/90), and the negative rate of both P16 and Rb proteins was 8% (7/90) in 90 GCs. The rate of positive P16 protein with negative Rb protein was 33% (30/90). The rate of negative P16 protein with positive Rb protein was 43% (39/90). There was reverse correlation between P16 and Rb expression in 90 GCs (P<0.05)., Conclusion: The loss protein expression of p16 and Rb genes is related to GC. The loss expression of P16 protein is related to the histopathologic subtypes and lymph node metastasis of GC. Expression of P16 and Rb proteins in GC is reversely correlated. The deletion but not mutation in exon 2 of p16 gene may be involved in GC.
