Spontaneous solvent-controlled solid-state transformations were observed for a series of polymeric chain solvates [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5Solv (Solv = (CH3)2CO, THF, CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, CHCl3) with 2-(1-propyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (LPr) under ambient conditions. The conversion of powdered polymeric chain [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5THF and [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5(CH3)2CO complexes, accompanied by the loss of solvent molecules, occurs completely to binuclear [Cu(hfac)2LPr]2 within a day. On the other hand, in the case of [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5Solv (Solv = CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, CHCl3), the partial transformation into a desolvated 1D polymer [Cu(hfac)2LPr] or its mixture with [Cu(hfac)2LPr]2 takes much longer time. The magnetic behavior of the isostructural solvates is highly sensitive to the included solvent molecules. The complexes with THF, CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, and CHCl3 undergo a transition to a magnetically ordered state below 4 K, a phenomenon reported for the first time for the polymeric chain Cu(II) complexes with a "head-to-tail" motif. [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5THF and [Cu(hfac)2LPr]·0.5(CH3)2CO undergo a spin transition at 190 K, which is induced by the transformation of the Cu atom environment. In the case of the THF solvate, the increase in the distances between the Cu and oxygen atoms leads to enhanced ferromagnetic exchange interactions, while in the acetone solvate, the nitroxide coordination type changes from axial to equatorial at certain coordination sites, resulting in the emergence of strong antiferromagnetic exchange. A series of pyridyl‐substituted nitronyl nitroxides was synthesized and structurally characterized. A comprehensive magnetochemical and quantum chemical study of extended raw of the nitroxides with different substituents R in the pyridine fragment was performed. It was shown, that temperature‐dependent magnetic properties are determined by the short contacts between nitroxide groups of adjacent molecules as well as between nitroxide group and methyl substituents in the pseudo axial positions of imidazoline fragments. Quantum chemistry allows to select the appropriate model of exchange cluster for analysis of experimental magnetic data and evaluation of the exchange interaction parameters. For NN–PyCl the "order‐disorder" transition was detected by means of low temperature XRD. The difference in the experimental and calculated exchange interaction energies may serve as an indicator of temperature‐induced structural rearrangements. For instance, for methyl substituted nitronyl nitroxide NN‐PyMe structural transformations and significant changes in exchange interaction energies were observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The title radical R⋅, synthesized by reduction of the corresponding cation R+, is thermally stable up to ~380 K in the crystalline state under anaerobic conditions. With SQUID magnetometry, single‐crystal and powder XRD, solid‐state EPR and TG‐DSC, reversible spin‐Peierls transition between diamagnetic and paramagnetic states featuring ~10 K hysteretic loop is observed for R⋅ in the temperature range ~310–325 K; ΔH=~2.03 kJ mol−1 and ΔS=~6.23 J mol−1 K−1. The transition is accompanied by mechanical movement of the crystals, i. e. by thermosalient behavior. The low‐temperature diamagnetic P‐1 polymorph of R⋅ consists of R⋅2 π‐dimers arranged in (...R⋅2...)n π‐stacks; whereas the high‐temperature paramagnetic P21/c polymorph, of uniform (...R⋅...)n π‐stacks. With the XRD geometries, CASSCF and broken‐symmetry DFT jointly suggest strong antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions within R⋅2 and weak between R⋅2 for the (...R⋅2...)n stacks; and moderate AF interactions between R⋅ for the (...R⋅...)n stacks. The fully hydrocarbon archetype of R⋅ does not reveal the aforementioned properties. A novel synthetic approach has been employed to synthesize a series of new nitronyl nitroxides: 2‐(1‐propyl‐1H‐imidazol‐5‐yl)‐ (Ln−Pr), 2‐(1‐isopropyl‐1H‐imidazol‐5‐yl)‐ (Li−Pr) and 2‐(1‐butyl‐1H‐imidazol‐5‐yl)‐4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐4,5‐dihydro‐1H‐imidazole‐3‐oxide‐1‐oxyl (Ln−Bu). The reaction of Cu(hfac)2 with LR in a 1 : 2 ratio yields mononuclear heterospin complexes [Cu(hfac)2(LR)2] (LR=Ln‐Pr, Li‐Pr, Ln‐Bu), which have a similar crystal structure to the "jumping" crystals [Cu(hfac)2(LMe)2] that exhibit chemomechanical activity. It was shown that an increase in the alkyl substituent R leads to changes in the crystal packing of the molecules and the absence of chemomechanical activity. Furthermore, it was found that two polymorph modifications of the heterospin complex [Cu(hfac)2(Ln−Pr)2] can be obtained, and magnetic properties of [Cu(hfac)2(Ln−Pr)2] strongly depend on the angle between the planes of the paramagnetic fragment O•–N‐C=N→O and the imidazole ring in Ln−Pr. High‐spin organic tetraradicals with significant intramolecular exchange interactions have high potential for advanced technological applications and fundamental research, but those synthesized to date possess limited stability and processability. In this work, we have designed a tetraradical based on the Blatter's radical and nitronyl nitroxide radical moieties and successfully synthesized it by using the palladium‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reaction of a triiodo‐derivative of the 1,2,4‐benzotriazinyl radical with gold(I) nitronyl nitroxide‐2‐ide complex in the presence of a newly developed efficient catalytic system. The molecular and crystal structure of the tetraradical was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The tetraradical possesses good thermal stability with decomposition onset at ∼150 °C under an inert atmosphere and exhibits reversible redox waves at −0.54 and 0.45 V versus Ag/AgCl. The magnetic properties of the tetraradical were characterized by SQUID magnetometry of polycrystalline powders and EPR spectroscopy in various matrices. The collected data, analyzed by using high‐level quantum chemical calculations, confirmed that the tetraradical has a triplet ground state and a nearby excited quintet state. By the reaction of M(hfac)2 (M = Mn(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II); hfac is the hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion) and ferrocenyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxide (L), we succeeded in the synthesis of stable heterospin complexes: mononuclear [Zn(hfac)2L], trinuclear {[Cu(hfac)2]3L2} and chain polymer [Mn(hfac)2L]n and [Co(hfac)2L]n. The specific steric bulkiness of the ferrocenyl substituent leads to the formation of trans-type coordination polyhedra in the [Mn(hfac)2L]n and [Co(hfac)2L]n chains. The introduction of the ferrocene substituent leads to an effective weakening of intermolecular or interchain magnetic exchange coupling. Ferrimagnetic ordering was observed for one-dimensional complexes [M(hfac)2L]n (M = Mn(II), Co(II)). [Co(hfac)2L]n exhibits features of single-chain magnet behaviour: slow relaxation of magnetization below 13 K is associated with a high coercive field (54 kOe at 2 K). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The metal–radical approach is a well-established synthetic way toward multi-spin systems that relies on the coordination of stable radical ligands with transition metal ions. The advantage offered by the use of paramagnetic ligands is that metal–radical magnetic exchange coupling is direct between the magnetic orbitals of the radical and metal ion. With the aim of further exploring this approach, crystals of four heterspin complexes, [M(hfac)2LF]2 {M = Mn, Co, or Ni and hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate} and [Cu(hfac)2LF]n, were obtained using a new fluorinated pyrazolyl-substituted nitronyl nitroxide radical, 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-(5-fluoro-1-methyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (LF) as a ligand. The newly synthesized complexes were fully characterized, including X-ray crystallography and magnetometry. XRD analysis revealed that complexes [M(hfac)2LF]2 have similar dimer structures in which a metal ion is in a six-coordinated environment with four O atoms from the two hfac ligands, one radical O atom, and one pyrazole N atom from ligand LF. Nonetheless, the packing patterns of the complexes were found to be considerably different. In [Mn(hfac)2LF]2, there are no magnetically important short contacts between manganese dimers. By contrast, in [Co(hfac)2LF]2 and [Ni(hfac)2LF]2, there are short contacts between non-coordinate O atoms of nitronyl nitroxide moieties. Magnetic behaviors of [M(hfac)2LF]2 showed that the M ions and the directly coordinated radicals are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled (JMn-ON = −84.1 ± 1.5 cm−1, JCo-ON = −134.3 ± 2.6 cm−1, and JNi-ON = −276.2 ± 2.1 cm−1; H ^ = − 2 J S ⃑ ^ M S ⃑ ^ N O ). Notably, the magnetization of [Mn(hfac)2LF]2 having molecular structure proved to be accompanied by hysteresis. The [Cu(hfac)2LF]n complex has a chain-polymer structure with alternating magnetic fragments: three spin exchange clusters {ONO–Cu(II)–ONO} and {Cu(II)} ions. Despite the direct coordination of radicals, its magnetic properties are weakly ferromagnetic (JCu-ON = 14.8 ± 0.3 cm−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bimolecular complexes [ML2(MeOH)2][ML2(EtOH)2], where M is CoII, NiII or Co II0.5 Ni II0.5 and L is a deprotonated enaminoketone 4-(3′,3,3′-trifluoro-2′-oxopropylidene)-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-imidazolidin-1-oxyl, were found to be isolated in the solid phase from a solution containing MeOH and EtOH in the ratio 1 : 10. Their solids have a layered-polymer structure due to hydrogen bonds between the OH-groups of the coordinated ROH molecules and nitroxide groups of the neighboring [ML2(ROH)2] molecules. The peculiar crystal structures of [ML2(MeOH)2][ML2(EtOH)2] have ordered alternation of methanol- and ethanol-containing supramolecular layers. Detailed crystallochemical analysis showed that during the formation of [ML2(MeOH)2][ML2(EtOH)2] crystals, the MeOH containing layer is significantly deformed in comparison with the [ML2(MeOH)2] structure. This indicates that the ethanol-containing layer determines the crystal formation, while the {ML2(MeOH)2} layer "adjusts" to it. Novel nitronyl nitroxides, namely 2-(3-iodoethynylphenyl)- and 2-(4-iodoethynylphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-3-oxyl-1-oxides, were prepared by condensation of appropriate aldehydes with 2,3-bis(hydroxylamino)-2,3-dimethylbutane followed by oxidative treatment with NaIO4. Crystal and molecular structures of the obtained paramagnets were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the crystals, the radicals are assembled into zigzag chains in which the radical building blocks are linked by intermolecular I⋯N–O halogen bonding. Magnetic analyses revealed that in both nitronyl nitroxides, the radicals are weakly coupled. Nonetheless, spin–spin interactions in the 3-iodoethynyl isomer are antiferromagnetic, and the coupling is stronger than that in the 4-iodoethynyl derivative, in which the exchange interaction is ferromagnetic. DFT calculations in combination with MEP, NCIplot, and QTAIM analyses were used to evaluate and characterize the structure-directing halogen bonding interactions observed in the solid state of both compounds. A simple and highly effective methodology for the cross-coupling of heteroaryl iodides with NN–AuPPh3 at room temperature is reported. The protocol is based on a novel catalytic system consisting of Pd2(dba)3·CHCl3 and the phosphine ligand MeCgPPh having an adamantane-like framework. The present protocol was found to be well compatible with various heteroaryl iodides, thus opening new horizons in directed synthesis of functionalized nitronyl nitroxides and high-spin molecules. Using single crystal XRD, it was proved that the cyclocondensation of 3,4-diaminofurazan with diethyl-2-oxosuccinate gives two products belonging to different heterocyclic systems, being structural isomers -derivatives of furazano[3,4-b]pyrazin-6-one (2) and furazano[3,4-b][1,4]diazepin-7-one (6). The simultaneous formation of compounds 2 and 6 in this reaction provokes also the generation of a third solid product, an unusual co-crystal (2)0.40(6)0.60. This is a rare example of co-crystallization of two isomers, the molecules of which occupy the same position in the crystal structure, despite the differences of the heterocyclic systems. Blatter radicals 1-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-(1a) and 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-3-phenyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl (1b) were prepared in good yields through oxidation of the corresponding amidrazones using MnO2 in dry CH2Cl2. Cyclic voltammetry showed that both radicals are oxidized and reduced chemically and electrochemically reversibly in accordance with −1/0 and 0/+1 processes. EPR spectroscopy indicated that spin density is mainly delocalized on the triazinyl moiety of the heterocycle. The structure of all paramagnets was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and two different 1D chains of alternating radicals were identified. 3,4-difluorophenyl-derivatives 1a are packed into columns composed of two kinds of alternating centrosymmetric dimers, having comparatively short intermolecular distances. In crystals of 2,4-difluorophenyl-derivative 1b, the parallel arrangement of bicyclic moieties and phenyl rings favors the formation of 1D regular chains wherein the radicals are related by translation parallel to the crystallographic stacking axis. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the 2–300 K region showed that in crystals of the radicals, strong antiferromagnetic interactions are dominant. Subsequent fitting of the dependence of χT on T with 12-membered looped stacks gave the following best-fit parameters: for 1a, g = 2.01 ± 0.05, J1/kB = −292 ± 10 K (according to BS-DFT calculations J2 = 0.12 × J1 and J3 = 0.61 × J1); for 1b, g = 2.04 ± 0.01 J1/kB = −222 ± 17 K. For comparison, in a nonfluorinated related radical, there are only very weak intermolecular interactions along the columns (J/kB = −2.2 ± 0.2 K). Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL3)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO8] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (Ueff for Dy complexes) is revealed. The 2-imidazoline nitroxide derivatives of cymantrene—2-(η5-cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (NNMn) and 2-(η5-cyclopentadienyl)tricarbonylmanganese(I)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-1-oxyl (INMn) were synthesized. It was shown that NNMn and INMn exhibit a sufficiently high kinetic stability both in solids and in solutions under normal conditions. Their structural characteristics, magnetic properties and electrochemical behavior are close to Re(I) analogs. This opens the prospect of using paramagnetic cymantrenes as prototypes in the design of Re(I) half-sandwiched derivatives for theranostics, where therapy is combined with diagnostics by magnetic resonance imaging due to the contrast properties of nitroxide radicals. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is used for studying the thermally induced spin transitions in a family of heterospin polymer chain complexes of [Cu.sup.2} hexafluoroacetylacetonate with two pyrazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxides. The studies have shown an efficient tool for characterizing the spin transitions and for understanding the temperature-dependent sign and value of the exchange interaction in strongly coupled spin triads.
