3. Situating Semester Schools in the Landscape of High School Learning

Abstract

Semester schools provide high-school students with a relatively new type of learning environment that largely has not been empirically studied. This study used a retrospective survey (n = 797) to explore the learning outcomes that stem from semester schools and identify features within the educational environment that promote them. Participants reported that appreciation for differences was the most critical and useful outcome of participation in semester school programming, with willingness to try new things, communication and identity development following closely behind. Participants also identified specific features of semester schools that supported the development of their learning outcomes, which included relationships with faculty and peers, the pedagogical approach used by semester school teachers, the non-traditional structure of the semester, and specific coursework or learning activities. The findings pointed to the strong community that developed between students and their peers, as well as to their teachers as being a driver of the intrapersonal development participants experienced, which partially stemmed from the distinct features of semester schools such as being away from home, living together in a bounded social structure, and having an integrated curriculum. In addition, the temporary structure of a semester school could promote types of learning that students would not typically experience while at traditional four-year high schools.

24. Situating and Sequencing Quagmire: The Role of Simulation-Based Gaming in Preparing Students for Future Learning at Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Abstract

We assessed the efficacy of the educational simulation Quagmire to deliver curriculum focused on park and protected area management in a time of record visitor use. Specifically, our study evaluated how Quagmire prepared contemporary students to maximize field-based learning during a week-long experience at Capitol Reef National Park, USA (Capitol Reef). Student essays and discussion responses (n = 71) were collected following the visit to Capitol Reef, and coded by two researchers familiar with Quagmire and simulation-based learning. Place-based education and preparation for future learning frameworks were used in qualitative analyses. Results indicate students perceived Quagmire prepared them to maximize learning at Capitol Reef, however, combining Quagmire with subsequent field-based learning did not substantially contribute to outcomes associated with connection to place. Implications for using Quagmire with contemporary student populations are discussed, as is the potential usefulness of sequencing simulation-based gaming with field-based learning.

25. Neither Camper nor Staff: Understanding Counselor-in-Training Programs

Abstract

Attending summer camp can be a developmentally enriching experience for both campers and camp staff. However, many camps offer programming that is situated between the camper and counselor roles, namely counselor-in-training (CIT) programs. While CIT programs are common, there is a lack of research documenting the form, function, and outcomes of participation in them. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to understand the nature and benefits of camp-based adolescent leadership programs. To inform this purpose, we surveyed CIT program directors and asked them to describe various aspects of their programs. We also collected primary data directly from CIT participants so that we could include participants' perspectives in our study. Results indicated that CITs gained a variety of social and emotional skills from their CIT experience. These findings are discussed and implications for practitioners are proposed.

Abstract

Background: Young athletes who specialize early in a single sport may subsequently be at increased risk of injury. While heightened injury risk has been theorized to be related to volume or length of exposure to a single sport, the development of unhealthy, homogenous movement patterns, and rigid neuromuscular control strategies may also be indicted. Unfortunately, traditional laboratory assessments have limited capability to expose such deficits due to the simplistic and constrained nature of laboratory measurement techniques and analyses. Methods: To overcome limitations of prior studies, the authors proposed a soccer-specific virtual reality header assessment to characterize the generalized movement regularity of 44 young female athletes relative to their degree of sport specialization (high vs low). Participants also completed a traditional drop vertical jump assessment. Results: During the virtual reality header assessment, significant differences in center of gravity sample entropy (a measure of movement regularity) were present between specialized (center of gravity sample entropy: mean = 0.08, SD = 0.02) and nonspecialized center of gravity sample entropy: mean = 0.10, SD = 0.03) groups. Specifically, specialized athletes exhibited more regular movement patterns during the soccer header than the nonspecialized athletes. However, no significant between-group differences were observed when comparing participants' center of gravity time series data from the drop vertical jump assessment. Conclusions: This pattern of altered movement strategy indicates that realistic, sport-specific virtual reality assessments may be uniquely beneficial in exposing overly rigid movement patterns of individuals who engage in repeated sport specialized practice. 35. The Mentoring Networks of Outdoor Educators

Abstract

The dynamic and transitory nature of outdoor education (OE) employment may make the cultivation of traditional dyadic mentoring relationships challenging. This study used the developmental network perspective, which positions mentoring as a multirelationship phenomenon, to better understand how OE instructors working for NOLS access mentoring support, help ascertain the types of mentoring support instructors find meaningful, and delineate the attributes of effective mentoring relationships. Twenty-one instructors with differing levels of experience were interviewed for this study. Data indicated that interviewees found meaningful mentoring support from a variety of sources, namely, senior instructors and near peers. The provision of career-related support, specifically support that helped mentees navigate organizational culture and gain more work opportunities, was highly regarded by participants and positively impacted career outcomes. Challenges facing instructors seeking mentoring support and the implications of these results for instructors and OE providers are discussed.

36. Instructor Impacts on Outdoor Education Participant Outcomes: A Systematic Review

Abstract

This systematic review assesses the state of the literature regarding the impacts of outdoor education instructors' behaviors and traits on participant outcomes. Twenty-seven articles are reviewed in detail, and student outcomes in relation to instructor behaviors and traits and to programmatic elements are identified. A range of participant outcomes including social and emotional skills development, group cohesion, and identity development are discussed. Twelve distinct outdoor education instructor behaviors are identified, and the five most salient are discussed. Instructor traits such as interpersonal qualities are emphasized. Programmatic elements employed by instructors that impact participant outcomes include (1) incorporating elements of experiential learning, (2) debriefing and feedback, and (3) participant reflection. Suggestions for future research are provided including conducting quasi-experimental studies that segment groups based on instructor behaviors, traits, and leadership theories; work that identifies participant and instructor demographics; and scholarship using diverse methodological approaches.

Abstract

Mobility and speech-language impairments and limitations in adults with neurological conditions manifest not in isolated anatomical components but instead in the individual-environment system and are task-dependent. Optimization of function thus requires interprofessional care to promote participation in meaningful life areas within appropriate task and environmental contexts. Cotreatment guidelines (ie, the concurrent intervention of disciplines) were established by the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language and hearing professional organizations nearly 2 decades ago to facilitate seamless interprofessional care. Despite this, cotreatment between physical therapy and speech therapy remains limited. The purpose of this Perspective article is to encourage physical therapists and speech-language pathologists to increase interprofessional collaboration through cotreatment in the management of adults with neurological conditions. Evidence from pediatrics and basic motor control literature points toward reciprocal interactions between speech-language and mobility. We provide recommendations for clinical practice with an emphasis on the gains each discipline can provide the other. This Perspective is rooted in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health model and ecological theory. Impact. The goals of speech therapy and physical therapy are complementary and mutually supportive. 49. An Exploration of Teacher's Use of iPads for Students with Learning Support Needs

Abstract

This project explored how iPads were being used in a range of K-12 schools to support the learning of students with a range of learning support needs. Groups of teachers (and other professionals) from the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK were invited to complete an online survey focused on the use of iPads in their classrooms, perspectives of their skill level, and how their school and school districts support the use of iPads. The survey focused on iPad use in classrooms (curriculum and skills); teachers' skill levels; whether iPads are addressed in the Individualised Education Program (IEP); the systemic support for the iPads; and the perceived benefits and barriers. The results reveal that respondents are using iPads across many areas of the curriculum, which affirms the research in the emerging literature base. However, there are teacher-reported differences in the manner and scope of iPad use in the classrooms and also the integration of the iPad in the IEP. The research also highlights variability in reported skill level for the iPad and an increased need for enhanced systemic support, such as training, funding, technical support and administrative support for the use of the iPad as a pedagogical tool.
