For the first time, a calibration between the He  i |$\lambda 5876$| /H  |$\beta$| emission line ratio and the helium abundance y = 12 + log(He/H) for Narrow line regions of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei is proposed. In this context, observational data (taken from the SDSS-DR15 and from the literature) and direct abundance estimates (via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method) for a sample of 65 local (⁠|$z \: \lt \: 0.2$|⁠) Seyfert 2 nuclei are considered. The resulting calibration estimates the y abundance with an average uncertainty of 0.02 dex. Applying our calibration to spectroscopic data containing only strong emission lines, it yields a helium abundance distribution similar to that obtained via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method. Some cautions must be considered to apply our calibration for Seyfert 2 nuclei with high values of electron temperature (⁠|${\gtrsim} 20\, 000$|  K) or ionization parameter (⁠|$\log U \ \gt\ {-}2.0$|⁠). We analyse the validity of optical diagnostic diagrams relying on emission-lines ratios and in the context of classifying Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) according to the cosmic metallicity evolution in the redshift range |$0 \le z \le 11.2$|⁠. In this regard, we fit the results of chemical evolution models (CEMs) to the radial gradients of the N/O abundances ratio derived through direct estimates of electron temperatures (T e-method) in a sample of four local spiral galaxies. This approach allows us to select representative CEMs and extrapolate the radial gradients to the nuclear regions of the galaxies in our sample, inferring in this way the central N/O and O/H abundances. The nuclear abundance predictions for theoretical galaxies from the selected CEMs, at distinct evolutionary stages, are used as input parameters in AGN photoionization models built with the Cloudy code. We found that standard BPT diagnostic diagrams are able to classify AGNs with oxygen abundances |$\rm 12+\log (O/H) \gtrsim 8.0$| [ |$(Z/Z_{\odot }) \gtrsim 0.2$| ] at redshift |$z \lesssim 4$|⁠. On the other hand, the He  ii λ4685/Hβ versus [N  ii ]λ6584/Hα diagram produces a reliable AGN classification independent of the evolutionary stage of these objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the hot molecular and warm ionized gas kinematics for 33 nearby (0.001 ≲ z ≲ 0.056) X-ray selected active galaxies using the H |$_2\, 2.1218\, \mu$| m and Br γ emission lines observed in the K band with the Gemini near-infrared integral field spectrograph. The observations cover the inner 0.04–2 kpc of each active galactic nucleus at spatial resolutions of 4–250 pc with a velocity resolution of σinst ≈ 20  |${\rm km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. We find that 31 objects (94 per cent) present a kinematically disturbed region (KDR) seen in ionized gas, while such regions are observed in hot molecular gas for 25 galaxies (76 per cent). We interpret the KDR as being due to outflows with masses of 102–107 and 100–104 M⊙ for the ionized and hot molecular gas, respectively. The ranges of mass-outflow rates (⁠|$\dot{M}_{\rm out}$|⁠) and kinetic power (⁠|$\dot{E}_{\rm K}$|⁠) of the outflows are 10−3–101 M⊙ yr−1 and ∼1037–1043 erg s−1 for the ionized gas outflows, and 10−5–10−2 M⊙ yr−1 and 1035–1039 erg s−1 for the hot molecular gas outflows. The median coupling efficiency in our sample is |$\dot{E}_{\mathrm{K}}/L_{\rm bol}\approx 1.8\times 10^{-3}$| and the estimated momentum fluxes of the outflows suggest they are produced by radiation-pressure in low-density environment, with possible contribution from shocks. For the first time, the sulphur abundance relative to hydrogen (S/H) in the narrow-line regions of a sample of Seyfert 2 nuclei (Sy 2s) has been derived via direct estimation of the electron temperature. Narrow emission-line intensities from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 17 (DR17) [in the wavelength range 3000 < λ(Å) < 9100] and from the literature for a sample of 45 nearby (z  < 0.08) Sy 2s were considered. Our direct estimates indicate that Sy 2s have similar temperatures in the gas region where most of the |$\rm S\rm ^{+}$| ions are located in comparison with that of star-forming regions (SFs). However, Sy 2s present higher temperature values (⁠|${\sim} 10\, 000$|  K) in the region where most of the |$\rm S\rm ^{2+}$| ions are located relative to that of SFs. We derive the total sulphur abundance in the range of |$6.2 \: \lesssim 12+\log (\rm S/H) \: \lesssim \: 7.5$|⁠ , corresponding to 0.1–1.8 times the solar value. These sulphur abundance values are lower by ∼0.4 dex than those derived in SFs with similar metallicity, indicating a distinct chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM) for these object classes. The sulphur abundance relative to oxygen (S/O) values for our Sy 2 sample present an abrupt (∼0.5 dex) decrease with increasing oxygen abundance relative to hydrogen (O/H) for the high-metallicity regime [ |$\rm 12+\log (O/H) \: \gtrsim 8.7)$| ], what is not seen for the SFs. Coronal-Line Forest Active Galactic Nuclei (CLiF AGN) are characterized by strong, high-ionization lines, which are in contrast to what is found in typical AGNs. Here, we carry out an infrared analysis aimed at understanding the spectral energy distribution (SED) of six sources from this group. In this work, the properties of the dusty torus for these objects are analysed. To this purpose, we infer the physical and geometrical properties of the dust structure that surrounds the central region by fitting with models, the SED of CLiF AGNs in the infrared. For this analysis, we compare the results of three models: clumpy, skirtor , and cat3d-wind. Using the Bayesian information criterion, skirtor was found to have the most robust fit to the SEDs in five out of six galaxies. The remaining object was best fitted with clumpy. The results indicate that these objects are preferentially Type I sources, supporting the detection of broad components in the permitted lines, likely associated with the broad-line region in the near-infrared spectra. The best SED fitting indicates that the line of sight gives access to the view of the central source for these objects, but the amount of dusty clouds in the same direction is high, suggesting the hypothesis that they obscure the emission of the continuum produced by the central source and that the obscuration makes the coronal lines to not overlap with the continuum. For the first time, the helium abundance relative to hydrogen (He/H), which relied on direct measurements of the electron temperature, has been derived in the narrow line regions (NLRs) from a local sample of Seyfert 2 nuclei. In view of this, optical emission line intensities [3000 < λ(Å) < 7000] of 65 local Seyfert 2 nuclei (z  < 0.2), taken from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 15 and additional compilation from the literature, were considered. We used photoionization model grid to derive an Ionization Correction Factor (ICF) for the neutral helium. The application of this ICF indicates that the NLRs of Seyfert 2 present a neutral helium fraction of ∼50 per cent in relation to the total helium abundance. We find that Seyfert 2 nuclei present helium abundance ranging from 0.60 to 2.50 times the solar value, while ∼85 per cent of the sample present oversolar abundance values. The derived (He/H)–(O/H) abundance relation from the Seyfert 2 is stepper than that of star-forming regions (SFs) and this difference could be due to excess of helium injected into the interstellar medium by the winds of Wolf–Rayet stars. From a regression to zero metallicity, by using Seyfert 2 estimates combined with SFs estimates, we obtained a primordial helium mass fraction Y p = 0.2441 ± 0.0037, a value in good agreement with the one inferred from the temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background by the Planck Collaboration, i.e. |$Y_{\rm p}^{\rm Planck}=0.2471\pm 0.0003$|⁠. Gas-phase metallicity gradients in galaxies provide important clues to those galaxies' formation histories. Using SDSS-IV MaNGA data, we previously demonstrated that gas metallicity gradients vary systematically and significantly across the galaxy mass–size plane: at stellar masses beyond approximately |$10^{10}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , more extended galaxies display steeper gradients (in units of dex/ R e) at a given stellar mass. Here, we set out to develop a physical interpretation of these findings by examining the ability of local ∼kpc-scale relations to predict the gradient behaviour along the mass–size plane. We find that local stellar mass surface density, when combined with total stellar mass, is sufficient to reproduce the overall mass–size trend in a qualitative sense. We further find that we can improve the predictions by correcting for residual trends relating to the recent star formation histories of star-forming regions. However, we find as well that the most extended galaxies display steeper average gradients than predicted, even after correcting for residual metallicity trends with other local parameters. From these results, we argue that gas-phase metallicity gradients can largely be understood in terms of known local relations, but we also discuss some possible physical causes of discrepant gradients. We study the gas distribution and kinematics of the inner kpc of six moderately luminous (43.43 ≤ log  L bol ≤ 44.83) nearby (0.004 ≤ z ≤ 0.014) Seyfert galaxies observed with the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) in the J (⁠|$1.25\,\mu$| m) and K (⁠|$2.2\,\mu$| m) bands. We analyse the most intense emission lines detected on these spectral wavebands: [Fe  ii ]  |$1.2570\, \mu$| m and Paβ, which trace the ionized gas in the partially and fully ionized regions, and |$\mathrm{ H}_2 \ 2.1218\, \mu$| m, which traces the hot (∼2000 K) molecular gas. The dominant kinematic component is rotation in the disc of the galaxies, except for the ionized gas in NGC 5899 that shows only weak signatures of a disc component. We find ionized gas outflow in four galaxies, while signatures of H2 outflows are seen in three galaxies. The ionized gas outflows display velocities of a few hundred km s−1, and their mass outflow rates are in the range 0.005–12.49 M⊙ yr−1. Their kinetic powers correspond to 0.005–0.7 per cent of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) bolometric luminosities. Besides rotation and outflows signatures in some cases, the H2 kinematics also reveals inflows in three galaxies. The inflow velocities are 50–80 km s−1 and the mass inflow rates are in the range 1–9 × 10−4 M⊙ yr−1 for hot molecular gas. These inflows might be only the hot skin of the total inflowing gas, which is expected to be dominated by colder gas. The mass inflow rates are lower than the current accretion rates to the AGN, and the ionized outflows are apparently disturbing the gas in the inner kpc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The merger remnant NGC 34 is a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) hosting a nuclear starburst and a hard X-ray source associated with a putative, obscured Seyfert 2 nucleus. In this work, we use adaptive optics assisted near-infrared (NIR) integral field unit observations of this galaxy to map the distribution and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in its inner |$\mathrm{1.2\, kpc \times 1.2\, kpc}$|⁠ , with a spatial resolution of 70 pc. The molecular and ionized gas kinematics is consistent with a disc with projected major axis along a mean PA = −9 |${_{.}^{\circ}}$| 2 ± 0 |${_{.}^{\circ}}$| 9. Our main findings are that NGC 34 hosts an AGN and that the nuclear starburst is distributed in a circumnuclear star formation ring with inner and outer radii of ≈ 60 and 180 pc, respectively, as revealed by maps of the |$\mathrm{[Fe\, {\small {II}}] / Pa\,\beta }$| and H2/Br  γ emission-line ratios, and corroborated by PCA tomography analysis. The spatially resolved NIR diagnostic diagram of NGC 34 also identifies a circumnuclear structure dominated by processes related to the stellar radiation field and a nuclear region where |$[\rm Fe\, {\small {II}}]$| and H2 emissions are enhanced relative to the hydrogen recombination lines. We estimate that the nuclear X-ray source can account for the central H2 enhancement and conclude that |$[\rm Fe\, {\small {II}}]$| and H2 emissions are due to a combination of photoionization by young stars, excitation by X-rays produced by the AGN and shocks. These emission lines show nuclear, broad, blueshifted components that can be interpreted as nuclear outflows driven by the AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the determination of electron densities, and their impact on the outflow masses and rates, measured in the central few hundred parsecs of 11 local luminous active galaxies. We show that the peak of the integrated line emission in the active galactic nuclei (AGN) is significantly offset from the systemic velocity as traced by the stellar absorption features, indicating that the profiles are dominated by outflow. In contrast, matched inactive galaxies are characterized by a systemic peak and weaker outflow wing. We present three independent estimates of the electron density in these AGN, discussing the merits of the different methods. The electron density derived from the [S  ii ] doublet is significantly lower than that found with a method developed in the last decade using auroral and transauroral lines, as well as a recently introduced method based on the ionization parameter. The reason is that, for gas photoionized by an AGN, much of the [S  ii ] emission arises in an extended partially ionized zone where the implicit assumption that the electron density traces the hydrogen density is invalid. We propose ways to deal with this situation and we derive the associated outflow rates for ionized gas, which are in the range 0.001–0.5 M⊙ yr−1 for our AGN sample. We compare these outflow rates to the relation between |$\dot{M}_{\rm out}$| and L AGN in the literature, and argue that it may need to be modified and rescaled towards lower mass outflow rates. In this work, we study the optical properties of compact radio sources selected from the literature in order to determine the impact of the radio-jet in their circumnuclear environment. Our sample includes 58 Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and 14 Megahertz-Peaked spectrum (MPS) radio sources located at z ≤ 1. The radio luminosity (LR) of the sample varies between Log L R ∼ 23.2 and 27.7 W Hz−1. We obtained optical spectra for all sources from SDSS-DR12 and performed a stellar population synthesis using the starlight code. We derived stellar masses (M⋆), ages 〈 t ⋆〉, star formation rates (SFR), metallicities 〈 Z ⋆〉 and internal reddening A V for all young AGNs of our sample. A visual inspection of the SDSS images was made to assign a morphological class for each source. Our results indicate that the sample is dominated by intermediate to old stellar populations and there is no strong correlation between optical and radio properties of these sources. Also, we found that young AGNs can be hosted by elliptical, spiral and interacting galaxies, confirming recent findings. When comparing the optical properties of CSS/GPS and MPS sources, we do not find any significant difference. Finally, the Mid-Infrared WISE colours analysis suggests that the compact radio sources defined as powerful AGNs are, in general, gas-rich systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on our combined analysis of HST , VLT/MUSE, VLT/SINFONI, and ALMA observations of the local Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5728 to investigate in detail the feeding and feedback of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The data sets simultaneously probe the morphology, excitation, and kinematics of the stars, ionized gas, and molecular gas over a large range of spatial scales (10 pc to 10 kpc). NGC 5728 contains a large stellar bar that is driving gas along prominent dust lanes to the inner 1 kpc where the gas settles into a circumnuclear ring. The ring is strongly star forming and contains a substantial population of young stars as indicated by the lowered stellar velocity dispersion and gas excitation consistent with H  ii regions. We model the kinematics of the ring using the velocity field of the CO (2–1) emission and stars and find it is consistent with a rotating disc. The outer regions of the disc, where the dust lanes meet the ring, show signatures of inflow at a rate of 1 M |$\odot$|  yr−1. Inside the ring, we observe three molecular gas components corresponding to the circular rotation of the outer ring, a warped disc, and the nuclear stellar bar. The AGN is driving an ionized gas outflow that reaches a radius of 250 pc with a mass outflow rate of 0.08 M |$\odot$|  yr−1 consistent with its luminosity and scaling relations from previous studies. While we observe distinct holes in CO emission which could be signs of molecular gas removal, we find that largely the AGN is not disrupting the structure of the circumnuclear region. We map the optical and near-infrared (NIR) emission-line flux distributions and kinematics of the inner 320 × 535 pc2 of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052. The integral field spectra were obtained with the Gemini Telescope using the GMOS-IFU and NIFS instruments, with angular resolutions of 0.88 and 0.1 arcsec in the optical and NIR, respectively. We detect five kinematic components: (1) and (2) two spatially unresolved components: a broad-line region visible in H α, with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of ∼3200 km s−1, and an intermediate broad component seen in the [O  iii ] λλ4959,5007 doublet; (3) an extended intermediate-width component with 280 km s−1 < FWHM < 450 km s−1 and centroid velocities up to 400 km s−1, which dominates the flux in our data, attributed either to a bipolar outflow related to the jets, rotation in an eccentric disc or to a combination of a disc and large-scale gas bubbles; (4) and (5) two narrow (FWHM < 150 km s−1) components, one visible in [O  iii ], and another visible in the other emission lines, extending beyond the field of view of our data, which is attributed to large-scale shocks. Our results suggest that the ionization within the observed field of view cannot be explained by a single mechanism, with photoionization being the dominant mechanism in the nucleus with a combination of shocks and photoionization responsible for the extended ionization. We characterized the kinematics, morphology, and stellar population (SP) properties of a sample of massive compact quiescent galaxies (MCGs, |$10\, \lesssim \, \log M_\star$| /M |$_\odot \, \lesssim \, 11$| and r e ∼ 1–3 kpc) in the MaNGA Survey, with the goal of constraining their formation, assembly history, and assessing their relation with non-compact quiescent galaxies. We compared their properties with those of a control sample of median-sized quiescent galaxies (r e ∼ 4–8 kpc) with similar effective velocity dispersions. MCGs have elevated rotational support, as evidenced by a strong anticorrelation between the Gauss–Hermite moment h 3 and V / σ. In contrast, 30 |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of control sample galaxies (CSGs) are slow rotators, and fast-rotating CSGs generally show a weak h 3– V / σ anticorrelation. MCGs and CSGs have similar ages, but MCGs are more metal-rich and α -enhanced. Both MCGs and CSGs have shallow negative metallicity gradients and flat [ α /Fe] gradients. On average, MCGs and CSGs have flat age gradients, but CSGs have a significantly larger dispersion of gradient values. The kinematics and SP properties of MCGs suggest that they experienced highly dissipative gas-rich events, such as mergers, followed by an intense, short, and centrally concentrated burst of star formation, between 4 and 10 Gyr ago (z ∼ 0.4–2), and had a quiet accretion history since then. This sequence of events might be analogous to, although less extreme than, the compaction events that formed compact quiescent galaxies at z  ∼ 2. The small sizes of MCGs, and the high efficiency and short duration of their last star formation episode suggest that they are descendants of compact post-starburst galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyse optical data cubes of the inner kiloparsec of 30 local (z ≤ 0.02) active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosts that our research group, AGNIFS, has collected over the past decade via observations with the integral field units of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs. Spatial resolutions range between 50 and 300 pc and spectral coverage is from 4800 or 5600 to 7000 Å, at velocity resolutions of ≈50  |$\rm ~km~s^{-1}$|⁠. We derive maps of the gas excitation and kinematics, and determine the AGN ionization axis – which has random orientation relative to the galaxy – and the kinematic major axes of the emitting gas. We find that rotation dominates the gas kinematics in most cases, but is disturbed by the presence of inflows and outflows. Outflows have been found in 21 nuclei, usually along the ionization axis. The gas velocity dispersion is traced by W 80 (velocity width encompassing 80 per cent of the line flux), adopted as a tracer of outflows. In seven sources, W 80 is enhanced perpendicularly to the ionization axis, indicating lateral expansion of the outflow. We have estimated mass-outflow rates |$\dot{M}$| and powers |$\dot{E}$|⁠ , finding median values of |$\log \, [\dot{M}/({\rm \, M_\odot \, yr^{-1}})]=-2.1_{-1.0}^{+1.6}$| and |$\log \, [\dot{E}/({\rm \, erg\, s^{-1}})]=38.5_{-0.9}^{+1.8}$|⁠ , respectively. Both quantities show a mild correlation with the AGN luminosity (L AGN). |$\dot{E}$| is of the order of 0.01 L AGN for four sources, but much lower for the majority (nine) of the sources, with a median value of |$\log \, [\dot{E}/L_{\rm AGN} ]=-5.34_{-0.9}^{+3.2}$|⁠ , indicating that typical outflows in the local Universe are unlikely to significantly impact their host galaxy evolution. We use Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) observations of the inner 3.5 × 3.5 kpc2 of the radio galaxy Cygnus A to map the gas excitation and kinematics at a spatial resolution of 200 pc. The emission of the ionized gas shows a biconical morphology, with half-opening angle of 45○ and oriented along the position angle of the radio jet. Coronal line emission is seen within the cone, up to 1.75 kpc from the nucleus, with higher ionization gas observed in the easterly side. The H2 and [Fe  ii ] emission lines are consistent with excitation by the central AGN, with some contribution of shocks to the south-west of the nucleus. The gas visual extinction and electron density are larger than those from optical-based measurements, consistent with the fact that near-IR observations penetrate deeply into the gas emission structure, probing denser and more obscured regions. The gas kinematics shows two components: (i) a rotating disc with kinematic position angle of Ψ0 = 21○ ± 2○, seen both in ionized and molecular gas, and (ii) outflows with velocities of up to 600 km s−1 observed within the ionization cone in ionized gas and restricted to inner 0.5 arcsec in molecular gas. The mass outflow rate in ionized gas is in the range |$\sim \! 100\!-\!280\, {\rm M_\odot \, yr^{-1}}$| and the kinetic power of the outflow corresponds to 0.3–3.3 per cent of the AGN bolometric luminosity, indicating that the outflows in Cygnus A may be effective in suppressing star formation. Several models have predicted that stars could form inside galactic outflows and that this would be a new major mode of galaxy evolution. Observations of galactic outflows have revealed that they host large amounts of dense and clumpy molecular gas, which provide conditions suitable for star formation. We have investigated the properties of the outflows in a large sample of galaxies by exploiting the integral field spectroscopic data of the large MaNGA-SDSS4 galaxy survey. We find evidence for prominent star formation occurring inside at least 30 per cent of the galactic outflows in our sample, whilst signs of star formation are seen in up to half of the outflows. We also show that even if star formation is prominent inside many other galactic outflows, this may have not been revealed as the diagnostics are easily dominated by the presence of even faint active galactic nucleus and shocks. If very massive outflows typical of distant galaxies and quasars follow the same scaling relations observed locally, then the star formation inside high-z outflows can be up to several 100 |$\rm M_{\odot }~yr^{-1}$| and could contribute substantially to the early formation of the spheroidal component of galaxies. Star formation in outflows can also potentially contribute to establishing the scaling relations between black holes and their host spheroids. Moreover, supernovae exploding on large orbits can chemically enrich in situ and heat the circumgalactic and intergalactic medium. We map optical and near-infrared (NIR) stellar population properties of the inner 320 × 535 pc2 of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052. The optical and NIR spectra were obtained using the Gemini Integral Field Units of the GMOS instrument and NIFS, respectively. By performing stellar population synthesis in the optical alone, we find that this region of the galaxy is dominated by old (t > 10 Gyr) stellar populations. Using the NIR, we find the nucleus to be dominated by old stellar populations, and a circumnuclear ring with younger (∼2.5 Gyr) stars. We also combined the optical and NIR datacubes and performed a panchromatic spatially resolved stellar population synthesis, which resulted in a dominance of older stellar populations, in agreement with optical results. We argue that the technique of combining optical and NIR data might be useful to isolate the contribution of stellar population ages with strong NIR absorption bands. We also derive the stellar kinematics and find that the stellar motions are dominated by a high (∼240 km s−1) velocity dispersion in the nucleus, with stars also rotating around the centre. Lastly, we measure the absorption bands, both in the optical and in the NIR, and find a nuclear drop in their equivalent widths. The favoured explanation for this drop is a featureless continuum emission from the low luminosity active galactic nucleus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner ∼200 pc radius of NGC 4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40–80 pc and using the starlight code. We found that the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t ≤ 50 Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50 Myr < t ≤ 2 Gyr), both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-like structure, surrounding the blob of young stars. Our results indicate that star formation has occurred through multiple bursts in this source. Furthermore, the youngest stellar populations (t ≲ 2 Gyr) are distributed along a circumnuclear star-forming ring with r ∼ 250 pc. The ring displays star formation rates (SFRs) in the range of 0.002–0.14 M⊙yr−1, favouring the 'pearls-on-a-string' scenario. The old underlying bulge stellar population component (t > 2 Gyr) is distributed outside the two blob structures. For the nuclear region (inner ∼60 pc radius) we derived an SFR of 0.43 M⊙ yr−1 and found no signatures of non-thermal featureless continuum and hot dust emission, supporting the scenario in which an LLAGN/LINER-like source is hidden in the centre of NGC 4303. Thus, our results reveal a rather complex star formation history in NGC 4303, with different stellar population components coexisting with a low efficiency accreting black hole in its centre. We build detailed composite models of photoionization and shock ionization based on the suma code to reproduce emission lines emitted from the Narrow Line Regions (NLR) of Seyfert 2 nuclei. The aim of this work is to investigate diagram active galactic nucleus (AGN) positions according to shock parameters, shock effects on the gas temperature and ionization structures and derive a semi-empirical abundance calibration based on emission-line ratios little sensitive to the shock presence. The models were used to reproduce optical (3000 < λ(Å) < 7000) emission line intensities of 244 local (⁠|$z \: \lesssim \: 0.4$|⁠) Seyfert 2s, whose observational data were selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7. Our models suggest that shocks in Seyfert 2 nuclei have velocities in the range of 50–300  |$\rm km \: s^{-1}$| and imply a narrower metallicity range (⁠|$0.6 \: \lesssim \: (Z/Z_{\odot }) \: \lesssim \: 1.6$|⁠) than those derived using pure photoionization models. Our results indicate that shock velocity in AGNs cannot be estimated using standard optical line ratio diagrams, based on integrated spectra. Our models predict a different temperature structure and |$\rm O^{+}$| /O and |$\rm O^{2+}$| /O fractional abundances throughout the NLR clouds than those derived from pure photoionization models, mainly in shock-dominated objects. This suggests that, in order to minimize the shock effects, the combination of emission-lines emitted by ions with similar intermediate ionization potential could be good metallicity indicators. Finally, we derive two calibrations between the N/O abundance ratio and the N2O2 = log([N  ii ]λ6584/[O  ii ]λ3727) and N2 = log([N  ii ]λ6584/H α) indexes which agree with that derived from pure photoionization models. We present maps for the electron temperature in the inner kpc of three luminous Seyfert galaxies: Mrk 79, Mrk 348, and Mrk 607 obtained from Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-integral field unit observations at spatial resolutions of ∼110–280 pc. We study the distributions of electron temperature in active galaxies and find temperatures varying in the range from ∼8000 to |$\gtrsim 30\, 000\,$| K. Shocks due to gas outflows play an important role in the observed temperature distributions of Mrk 79 and Mrk 348, while standard photoionization models reproduce the derived temperature values for Mrk 607. In Mrk 79 and Mrk 348, we find direct evidence for shock ionization with overall orientation orthogonal to the ionization axis, where shocks can be easily observed as the active galactic nuclei radiation field is shielded by the nuclear dusty torus. Coronal-line forest (CLiF) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are characterized by strong high-ionization lines, which contrasts with what is found in most AGNs. Here, we carry out a multiwavelength analysis aimed at understanding the physical processes in the narrow-line region (NLR) of these objects, and at discovering whether they are indeed a special class of AGNs. By comparing coronal emission-line ratios we conclude that there are no differences between CLiF and non-CLiF AGNs. We derive physical conditions of the NLR gas and we find electron densities in the range of 3.6 × 102 to 1.7 × 104 cm−3 and temperatures of 3.7 × 103 to 6.3 × 104 K, suggesting that the ionization mechanism is associated primarily with photoionization by the AGN. We suggest an NLR dominated by matter-bounded clouds to explain the high-ionization line spectrum observed. The mass of the central black hole, derived from the stellar velocity dispersion, shows that most of the objects have values in the interval 107–108 M⊙. Our results imply that CLiF AGNs are not in a separate category of AGNs. In all optical/near-infrared emission-line properties analysed, they represent an extension to the low/high ends of the distribution within the AGN class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have recently initiated the first spectroscopic dust reverberation programme on active galactic nuclei in the near-infrared. Spectroscopy enables measurement of dust properties, such as flux, temperature, and covering factor, with higher precision than photometry. In particular, it enables measurement of both luminosity-based dust radii and dust response times. Here we report results from a 1 yr campaign on NGC 5548. The hot dust responds to changes in the irradiating flux with a lag time of ∼70 light-days, similar to what was previously found in photometric reverberation campaigns. The mean and rms spectra are similar, implying that the same dust component dominates both the emission and the variations. The dust lag time is consistent with the luminosity-based dust radius only if we assume a wavelength-independent dust emissivity law, i.e. a blackbody, which is appropriate for grains of large sizes (of a few μ m). For such grains the dust temperature is ∼1450 K. Therefore, silicate grains have most likely evaporated and carbon is the main chemical component. But the hot dust is not close to its sublimation temperature, contrary to popular belief. This is further supported by our observation of temperature variations largely consistent with a heating/cooling process. Therefore, the inner dust-free region is enlarged and the dusty torus rather a 'dusty wall', whose inner radius is expected to be luminosity-invariant. The dust-destruction mechanism that enlarges the dust-free region seems to also partly affect the dusty region. We observe a cyclical decrease in dust mass with implied dust reformation times of ∼5–6 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present and characterize a sample of 20 nearby Seyfert galaxies selected for having BAT 14-195 keV luminosities LX ≥ 1041.5 erg s-1, redshift z ≤ 0.015, being accessible for observations with the Gemini Near-Infrared Field Spectrograph (NIFS) and showing extended [O III]λ5007 emission. Our goal is to study Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) feeding and feedback processes from near-infrared integral-field spectra, which include both ionized (H II) and hot molecular (H2) emission. This sample is complemented by other nine Seyfert galaxies previously observed with NIFS. We show that the host galaxy properties (absolute magnitudes MB, MH, central stellar velocity dispersion and axial ratio) show a similar distribution to those of the 69 BAT AGN. For the 20 galaxies already observed, we present surface mass density (Σ) profiles for H II and H2 in their inner ˜500 pc, showing that H II emission presents a steeper radial gradient than H2. This can be attributed to the different excitation mechanisms: ionization by AGN radiation for HII and heating by X-rays for H2. The mean surface mass densities are in the range (0.2 ≤ ΣH II ≤ 35.9) Mʘ pc-2, and (0.2 ≤ ΣH2 ≤ 13.9)× 10-3 Mʘ pc-2, while the ratios between the H II and H2 masses range between ˜200 and 8000. The sample presented here will be used in future papers to map AGN gas excitation and kinematics, providing a census of the mass inflow and outflow rates and power as well as their relation with the AGN luminosity. We present a multiwavelength study of the OH megamaser galaxy IRAS17526 + 3253, based on new Gemini multi-object spectrograph integral field unit (GMOS/IFU) observations, Hubble Space Telescope F814W, and H α + [N  ii ] images, and archival 2MASS and 1.49 GHz VLA data. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images clearly reveal a mid-to-advanced stage major merger whose northwestern and southeastern nuclei have a projected separation of ∼8.5 kpc. Our HST /H α + [N  ii ] image shows regions of ongoing star formation across the envelope on ∼10 kpc scales, which are aligned with radio features, supporting the interpretation that the radio emission originates from star-forming regions. The measured H α luminosities imply that the unobscured star formation rate (SFR) is ∼10–30 M⊙ yr−1. The GMOS/IFU data reveal two structures in northwestern separated by 850 pc and by a discontinuity in the velocity field of ∼ 200 km s−1. We associate the blueshifted and redshifted components with, respectively, the distorted disc of northwestern and tidal debris, possibly a tail originating in southeastern. Star formation is the main ionization source in both components, which have SFRs of ∼2.6–7.9 M⊙ yr−1 and ∼1.5–4.5 M⊙ yr−1, respectively. Fainter line emission bordering these main components is consistent with shock ionization at a velocity ∼200 km s−1 and may be the result of an interaction between the tidal tail and the northwestern galaxy's disc. IRAS17526 + 3253 is one of only a few systems known to host both luminous OH and H2O masers. The velocities of the OH and H2O maser lines suggest that they are associated with the northwestern and southeastern galaxies, respectively (Martin et al.; Wagner). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deriving a simple, analytic galaxy star formation history (SFH) using observational data is a complex task without the proper tool to hand. We therefore present snitch, an open source code written in python, developed to quickly (2 min) infer the parameters describing an analytic SFH model from the emission and absorption features of a galaxy spectrum dominated by star formation gas ionization. snitch uses the Flexible Stellar Population Synthesis models of Conroy, Gunn & White (2009), the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method in order to infer three parameters (time of quenching, rate of quenching, and model metallicity) which best describe an exponentially declining quenching history. This code was written for use on the MaNGA spectral data cubes but is customizable by a user so that it can be used for any scenario where a galaxy spectrum has been obtained, and adapted to infer a user defined analytic SFH model for specific science cases. Herein, we outline the rigorous testing applied to snitch and show that it is both accurate and precise at deriving the SFH of a galaxy spectra. The tests suggest that snitch is sensitive to the most recent epoch of star formation but can also trace the quenching of star formation even if the true decline does not occur at an exponential rate. With the use of both an analytical SFH and only five spectral features, we advocate that this code be used as a comparative tool across a large population of spectra, either for integral field unit data cubes or across a population of galaxy spectra. We investigate the processes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feeding and feedback in the narrow line regions (NLRs) and host galaxies of nearby AGN through spatially resolved spectroscopy with the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) and the Hubble Space Telescope's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We examine the connection between nuclear and galactic inflows and outflows by adding long-slit spectra of the host galaxies from Apache Point Observatory. We demonstrate that nearby AGN can be fueled by a variety of mechanisms. We find that the NLR kinematics can often be explained by in situ ionization and radiative acceleration of ambient gas, often in the form of dusty molecular spirals that may be the fueling flow to the AGN. Context. Tracing nuclear inflows and outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), determining the mass of gas involved in them, and their impact on the host galaxy and nuclear black hole requires 3D imaging studies of both the ionized and molecular gas. Aims. We map the distribution and kinematics of molecular and ionized gas in a sample of active galaxies to quantify the nuclear inflows and outflows. Here, we analyze the nuclear kinematics of NGC 1566 via ALMA observations of the CO J:2-1 emission at 24 pc spatial and ∼2.6 km s−1 spectral resolution, and Gemini-GMOS/IFU observations of ionized gas emission lines and stellar absorption lines at similar spatial resolution, and 123 km s−1 of intrinsic spectral resolution. Methods. The morphology and kinematics of stellar, molecular (CO), and ionized ([N II]) emission lines are compared to the expectations from rotation, outflows, and streaming inflows. Results. While both ionized and molecular gas show rotation signatures, there are significant non-circular motions in the innermost 200 pc and along spiral arms in the central kpc (CO). The nucleus shows a double-peaked CO profile (full width at zero intensity of 200 km s−1), and prominent (∼80 km s−1) blue- and redshifted lobes are found along the minor axis in the inner arcseconds. Perturbations by the large-scale bar can qualitatively explain all features in the observed velocity field. We thus favor the presence of a molecular outflow in the disk with true velocities of ∼180 km s−1 in the nucleus and decelerating to 0 by ∼72 pc. The implied molecular outflow rate is 5.6 M⊙ yr−1, with this gas accumulating in the nuclear 2″ arms. The ionized gas kinematics support an interpretation of a similar but more spherical outflow in the inner 100 pc, with no signs of deceleration. There is some evidence of streaming inflows of ∼50 km s−1 along specific spiral arms, and the estimated molecular mass inflow rate, ∼0.1 M⊙ yr−1, is significantly higher than the SMBH accretion rate (ṁ = 4.8 × 10−5M⊙ yr−1). We built a grid of photoionization models and compiled already available observational emission line intensities ($1000 \,\, \lt \,\, \lambda $ (Å) < 2000) of confirmed star formation regions and Active Galactic Nucleus (AGNs) in order to classify five Lyα emitter (LAE) objects at high redshift (5.7 <  $z$  < 7.2). We selected objects for which at least one metal emission-line was measured. The resulting sample is composed by the objects RXC J2248.7-4431-ID3, HSC J233408+004403, COSY, A1703-zd6, and CR7 (clump C). The photoionization models were built assuming a Power Law (associated with the presence of an AGN), a Direct Collapse Black Hole (DCBH), and Population II stars for the ionizing source. The resulting models were then compared with observational emission-line ratios in six diagnostic diagrams to produce a spectral classification of the sample. We found that CR7 (clump C), HSC J233408+004403 and COSY probably have a non thermal ionizing source (AGN or DCBH) while the RXC J2248.7-4431-ID3 and A1703-zd6 seem to host a stellar cluster. Detailed photoionization models were constructed to reproduce observational emission line ratios of the sample of LAEs, and to derive chemical abundances and number of ionizing photons $Q(\rm H)$ of these objects. From these models, we found metallicities in the range $0.1 \,\, \lesssim \,\, (Z/Z_{\odot }) \,\, \lesssim \,\, 0.5$ and $\log Q(\rm H) \,\, \gt \,\, 53$. Values for C/O abundance ratio derived for the LAEs seem to be consistent with those derived for local star forming objects with similar metallicities, while an overabundance of N/O was found for most of the LAEs. We present two-dimensional maps of emission-line fluxes and kinematics, as well as of the stellar kinematics of the central few kpc of five bright nearby Seyfert galaxies -Mrk 6, Mrk 79, Mrk 348, Mrk 607, and Mrk 1058 - obtained from observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit on the Gemini North Telescope. The data cover the inner 3.5 arcsecx5.0 arcsec - corresponding to physical scales in the range 0.6x0.9-1.5x2.2 kpc² - at a spatial resolution ranging from 110 to 280 pc with a spectral coverage of 4300-7100Å and velocity resolution of ≈90 km s-1. The gas excitation is Seyfert like everywhere but show excitation gradients that are correlated with the gas kinematics, reddening and/or the gas density. The gas kinematics show in all cases two components: a rotation one similar to that observed in the stellar velocity field, and an outflow component. In the case of Mrk607, the gas is counter-rotating relative to the stars. Enhanced gas velocity dispersion is observed in association with the outflows according to two patterns: at the locations of the highest outflow velocities along the ionization axis or perpendicularly to it in a strip centred at the nucleus that we attribute to an equatorial outflow. Bipolar outflows are observed in Mrk 348 and Mrk 79, while in Mrk 1058 only the blueshifted part is clearly observed, while in cases of Mrk 6 and Mrk 607, the geometry of the outflow needs further constraints from modelling to be presented in a forthcoming study, where the mass flow rate and powers will also be obtained. We study the internal radial gradients of stellar population properties within 1.5 Re and analyse the impact of galaxy environment. We use a representative sample of 721 galaxies with masses ranging between 109 M⊙ and 1011.5 M⊙ from he SDSS-IV survey MaNGA. We split this sample by morphology into early-type and late-type galaxies. Using the full spectral fitting code FIREFLY, we derive the light and mass-weighted stellar population properties, age and metallicity, and calculate the gradients of these properties. We use three independent methods to quantify galaxy environment, namely the Nth nearest neighbour, the tidal strength parameter Q and distinguish between central and satellite galaxies. In our analysis, we find that early-type galaxies generally exhibit shallow light-weighted age gradients in agreement with the literature and mass-weighted median age gradients tend to be slightly positive. Late-type galaxies, instead, have negative light-weighted age gradients. We detect negative metallicity gradients in both early- and late-type galaxies that correlate with galaxy mass, with the gradients being steeper and the correlation with mass being stronger in late-types. We find, however, that stellar population gradients, for both morphological classifications, have no significant correlation with galaxy environment for all three characterizations of environment. Our results suggest that galaxy mass is the main driver of stellar population gradients in both early and late-type galaxies, and any environmental dependence, if present at all, must be very subtle. We use high-spectral resolution (R > 8000) data covering 3800–13 000 Å to study the physical conditions of the broad-line region (BLR) of nine nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies. Up to six broad H i lines are present in each spectrum. A comparison – for the first time using simultaneous optical to near-infrared observations – to photoionization calculations with our devised simple scheme yields the extinction to the BLR at the same time as determining the density and photon flux, and hence distance from the nucleus, of the emitting gas. This points to a typical density for the H i emitting gas of 1011 cm−3 and shows that a significant amount of this gas lies at regions near the dust sublimation radius, consistent with theoretical predictions. We also confirm that in many objects, the line ratios are far from case B, the best-fitting intrinsic broad-line Hα/H β ratios being in the range 2.5–6.6 as derived with our photoionization modelling scheme. The extinction to the BLR, based on independent estimates from H i and He ii lines, is AV ≤ 3 for Seyfert 1–1.5s, while Seyfert 1.8–1.9s have AV in the range 4–8. A comparison of the extinction towards the BLR and narrow-line region (NLR) indicates that the structure obscuring the BLR exists on scales smaller than the NLR. This could be the dusty torus, but dusty nuclear spirals or filaments could also be responsible. The ratios between the X-ray absorbing column NH and the extinction to the BLR are consistent with the Galactic gas-to-dust ratio if NH variations are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations at high redshift reveal that a population of massive, quiescent galaxies (called red nuggets) already existed 10 Gyr ago. These objects undergo a significant size evolution over time, likely due to minor mergers. In this work we present an analysis of local massive compact galaxies to assess if their properties are consistent with what is expected for unevolved red nuggets (relic galaxies). Using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data from the MaNGA survey from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we characterized the kinematics and properties of stellar populations of massive compact galaxies, and find that these objects exhibit, on average, a higher rotational support than a control sample of average sized early-type galaxies. This is in agreement with a scenario in which these objects have a quiet accretion history, rendering them candidates for relic galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present mid-infrared (MIR) imaging and spectroscopic data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 1066 obtained with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The galaxy was observed in imaging mode with an angular resolution of 0.24 arcsec (54 pc) in the Si-2 filter (8.7 μm). The image reveals a series of star-forming knots within the central ∼400 pc, after subtracting the dominant active galactic nucleus (AGN) component. We also subtracted this AGN unresolved component from the 8-13 μm spectra of the knots and the nucleus, and measured equivalent widths (EWs) of the 11.3 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) feature which are typical of pure starburst galaxies. This EW is larger in the nucleus than in the knots, confirming that, at least in the case of Mrk 1066, the AGN dilutes, rather than destroys, the molecules responsible for the 11.3 μm PAH emission. By comparing the nuclear GTC/CC spectrum with the Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectrum of the galaxy, we find that the AGN component that dominates the continuum emission at λ < 15 μm on scales of ∼60 pc (90-100 per cent) decreases to 35-50 per cent when the emission of the central ∼830 pc is considered. On the other hand, the AGN contribution dominates the 15-25 μm emission (75 per cent) on the scales probed by Spitzer/IRS. We reproduced the nuclear infrared emission of the galaxy with clumpy torus models, and derived a torus gas mass of 2 × 105 M⊙, contained in a clumpy structure of ∼2 pc radius and with a column density compatible with Mrk 1066 being a Compton-thick candidate, in agreement with X-ray observations. We find a good match between the MIR morphology of Mrk 1066 and the extended Paβ, Brγ and [O III] λ5007 emission. This coincidence implies that the 8.7 μm emission is probing star formation, dust in the narrow-line region and the oval structure previously detected in the near-infrared. On the other hand, the Chandra soft X-ray morphology does not match any of the previous, contrary to what it is generally assumed for Seyfert galaxies. A thermal origin for the soft X-ray emission, rather than AGN photoionization, is suggested by the different data analysed here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We employ the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility's near-infrared spectrograph SpeX at 0.8–2.4 μm to investigate the spatial distribution of the stellar populations (SPs) in the four well-known starburst galaxies: NGC 34, NGC 1614, NGC 3310 and NGC 7714. We use the starlight code updated with the synthetic simple SPs models computed by Maraston. Our main results are that the near-infrared light in the nuclear surroundings of the galaxies is dominated by young-/intermediate-age SPs (t ≤ 2 × 109 yr), summing from ∼40 up to 100 per cent of the light contribution. In the nuclear aperture of two sources (NGC 1614 and NGC 3310), we detected a predominant old SP component (t > 2 × 109 yr), while for NGC 34 and NGC 7714 the younger component prevails. Furthermore, we found evidence of a circumnuclear star formation ring-like structure and a secondary nucleus in NGC 1614, in agreement with previous studies. We also suggest that the merger/interaction experienced by three of the galaxies studied, NGC 1614, NGC 3310 and NGC 7714, can explain the lower metallicity values derived for the young SP component of these sources. In this scenario, the fresh unprocessed metal poorer gas from the destroyed/interacting companion galaxy is driven to the centre of the galaxies and mixed with the central region gas, before star formation takes place. In order to deepen our analysis, we performed the same procedure of SP synthesis using the Maraston & Strömbäck evolutionary population synthesis models. Our results show that the newer and higher resolution M11 models tend to enhance the old-/intermediate-age SP contribution over the younger ages. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
