Background: Diabetes self-management education (DSME) improves disease-specific markers (HbA1c levels and bodyweight) and prevents disease-related complications. Yet, patients do not seem to benefit equally from such education, likely because of differences in approaches to learning. Purpose: We investigated which learning approaches are best addressed by diabetes curricula and suggest improvements in curriculum design. Methods: Two of the most popular German type 2 DSME curricula were studied. We used qualitative content analysis to build a systematic coding frame, extracting and connecting categories of meaning from the material. Criteria for categories were drawn from research on learning preferences in adult Germans. Results: Both curricula mainly address participants preferring educator-guided and application-driven learning. One of the curricula more actively involves its participants with open discussions and personal goal-setting and shows a stronger emphasis on social support strategies. Discussion: Different learning approaches are not met equally in the curricula, which might create unique difficulties for participants of DSME. Translation to Health Education Practice: Introducing personal goal-setting and progress monitoring in DSME should benefit participants with passive approaches to learning. Offering additional course material could diversify teaching methods and satisfy theoretically driven people. All DSME programs should emphasize social support strategies.

Background: Age reportedly affects headache prevalence differently in boys and girls. However, little empirical data exists regarding pediatric headache prevalence and headache-related burden in children and adolescents according to age and sex. In the present study, we considered age and sex while evaluating the distribution, characteristics, and impairment of primary headache disorders at a pediatric headache center in Germany. Methods: Medical records of children and adolescents attending the headache clinic of the Interdisciplinary Pain Center of the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden during the period 2015-2022 were retrospectively grouped and analyzed depending on age (< or ≥14 years) and sex. Results: The study population consisted of 652 children and adolescents, aged between 3 and 18 years. Almost two-thirds of the patients (≈60%) were females, and almost two-thirds of these females (58%) were ≥14 years of age. Generally, the most prevalent headache diagnoses as defined by the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition were episodic migraine without aura and the combination of tension-type headache and episodic migraine with or without aura i.e., mixed-type headache (each ≈27%). In the younger group (<14 years), the mixed-type headache was the most prevalent in girls (28.6%), whereas, for boys, episodic migraine without aura was the most prevalent headache diagnosis (47.4%). In the older group (≥14 years), the mixed-type headache continued to be the most prevalent for girls (30%), and it became the most prevalent for boys (26.3%). Before the age of 14, about 16% of children were severely affected by their headaches. After the age of 14, this proportion increased to roughly one-third (33%) of adolescents, driven mainly by teenage girls (26%) who were severely affected by their headaches. Furthermore, the prevalence of comorbidities was significantly higher among girls (67%), particularly in the adolescent group (74%). Conclusions: Our data shows that headache disorders in a specialized pediatric clinic impose a significant burden, especially among teenage girls indicating high therapy needs. Enhancing awareness of early diagnosis and preventive care is crucial to mitigate the development of chronic headaches, and mitigate their adverse effects on life quality and educational capability. School tobacco policies (STPs) are a crucial strategy to reduce adolescents smoking. Existing studies have investigated STPs predominantly from a school-related 'insider' view. Yet, little is known about barriers that are not identified from the 'schools' perspective', such as perceptions of local stakeholders. Forty-six expert interviews from seven European cities with stakeholders at the local level (e.g. representatives of regional health departments, youth protection and the field of addiction prevention) were included. The analysis of the expert interviews revealed different barriers that should be considered during the implementation of STPs. These barriers can be subsumed under the following: (i) Barriers regarding STP legislature (e.g. inconsistencies, partial bans), (ii) collaboration and cooperation problems between institutions and schools, (iii) low priority of smoking prevention and school smoking bans, (iv) insufficient human resources and (v) resistance among smoking students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our findings on the expert's perspective indicate a need to enhance and implement comprehensive school smoking bans. Furthermore, collaboration and cooperation between schools and external institutions should be fostered and strengthened, and adequate human resources should be provided. Background: Women living in high-quality healthcare systems are more likely to use oral contraceptives at some point in their lives. Research findings have sparked controversial discussions about contraception in the scientific community and the media, potentially leading to higher rates of method discontinuation. Understanding the underlying motives for method discontinuation is crucial for reproductive health equity and future programming interventions. To address this question, this study aims to explore women's experiences of oral contraceptive use and discontinuation on YouTube. Methods: A concurrent explanatory mixed-methods design was used to conduct content analysis of German YouTube videos. The information from 175 videos of 158 individuals was extracted through quantitative descriptive content analysis. Twenty-one individuals were included in the qualitative content analysis. Findings: The body was a recurring theme in the pill biographies. Women described, for example, bodily sensations as reasons for taking and stopping the pill. They also described positive and negative side effects while taking the pill and after stopping. The most common side effects of taking the pill mentioned by YouTubers were mood swings (76/158), weight gain (45/158), headaches (33/158), and depressed mood (45/158). The symptoms after discontinuation reported most were facial skin impurities (108/158), decreased mood swings (47/158), hair loss (42/158), and weight loss (36/158). Overall, women overwhelmingly rated their discontinuation experience as positive (87/91). Conclusions: The study identified key symptoms of oral contraceptive initiation and discontinuation by portraying the experiences of female YouTubers, adding valuable insights to the understanding of method initiation and discontinuation. Operational durability is poorly characterized by traditional (photo)electrocatalyst discovery workflows, creating a barrier to scale‐up and deployment. Corrosion is a prominent degradation mechanism whose thermodynamics depend on the concentration of corrosion products in electrolyte. We present an automated system for characterizing the equilibration of (photo)electrodes with dissolved metals in electrolyte for a given electrode, pH, and electrochemical potential. Automation of electrode selection, electrolyte preparation, and electrolyte aliquoting enables rapid identification of self‐passivating electrodes and estimation of the equilibrium dissolved metals concentrations. The technique is demonstrated for metal oxide photoanodes in alkaline electrolyte, where BiVO4 is found to continually corrode, in agreement the literature. An amorphous Ni−Sb−O photoanode is found to passivate with a Ni‐rich coating on the order of 1 monolayer with less than 1 μM total dissolved metals in electrolyte, demonstrating its suitability for durable photoelectrochemical operation. The automation and throughput of the instrument are designed for incorporation in accelerated electrocatalyst discovery workflows so that durability can be considered on equal footing with activity. Background: In 2001, the International Classification of Functioning and Disability (ICF) introduced participation as a main goal of rehabilitation processes. However, to date, a comprehensive concept of participation in the rehabilitative context is missing, particularly in German‐speaking countries. We thus aimed to refine and extend the existing concepts of participation in this brief communication. Methods: In preceding studies, we conducted semi‐structured interviews with adolescents who either had chronic diseases and/or physical disabilities or had no impairments and focus groups with parents and experts. Based on these diverse perspectives and findings, we refine the term participation. Results: Participation is a construct that is embedded in a social context and consists of objective (i.e., attendance) and subjective (i.e., satisfaction and involvement) dimensions. These dimensions are reflected in different domains and areas that are relevant to adolescents' lives. In addition, the subjective relevance of respective areas in life needs to be regarded as a weighing component when evaluating participation. Conclusion: Our results reflect international models on participation, refine the existing concept, and underline the multidimensional character of participation. These findings are urgently needed to develop appropriate instruments, for example, for assessing whether rehabilitative processes are effective regarding the goal of participation.
