International audience; Magnetic properties of highly magnetostrictive amorphous glass-coated microwires are strongly correlated to the presence of a glass coating that introduces a spatially inhomogeneous stress field distribution. We investigate the influence of mechanical stresses on the inclination of magnetic domain walls in magnetic microwires. Magneto-optical Kerr effect imaging is used to compare the tilted orientation of the domain wall shape in as-cast and annealed microwires. Angular dependencies of magnetization loops measured by alternating gradient field magnetometry reveal that the change of domain wall tilting with annealing is related to the decrease of a magnetic anisotropy with axial orientation. Finally, micromagnetic simulations are used to show that sufficiently high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy gives rise to the presence of the observed charged domain walls with tilted orientation.

International audience; Here, we present magneto-optical studies of a surface domain wall (DW) shape in as-cast and heat-treated glass-coated microwires (MW). Technique optimized for the study of thin magnetic cylinders is used for local mapping of the magnetization process on wire's circumference. Consequently, the shape of the surface DW can be visualized at an arbitrary point along the wire's length. Samples undergo sequential heat treatment, and DW shape in the same sample before and after heat treatment is compared. Variation in DW tilting angle and length is observed as a result of annealing.; Nous présentons une étude par magnéto-optique de la forme des parois magnétiques dans des microfils magnétiques gainés de verre, tant dans l'état brut de fabrication qu'après traitement thermique. La technique magnéto-optique utilisée permet de remonter au profil d'aimantation à la surface des microfils. La position de la paroi peut ainsi être visualisée à toute position sur cette surface. Les échantillons ont subi une série de recuits thermiques, et les positions des parois avant et après chaque traitement ont été comparées. Nous avons observé une variation de l'angle d'inclinaison de la paroi, et de sa longueur selon l'axe du fil, suite aux recuits.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that exhibit fascinating physical behaviors and large potential in highly energy efficient spintronic device applications. The main obstacles so far are that skyrmions have been observed in only a few exotic materials and at low temperatures, and manipulation of individual skyrmions has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the observation of stable magnetic skyrmions at room temperature in ultrathin transition metal ferromagnets with magnetic transmission soft x-ray microscopy. We demonstrate the ability to generate stable skyrmion lattices and drive trains of individual skyrmions by short current pulses along a magnetic racetrack. Our findings provide experimental evidence of recent predictions and open the door to room-temperature skyrmion spintronics in robust thin-film heterostructures., 12 pages 3 figures

The dynamics of emergent magnetic quasiparticles, such as vortices, domain walls and bubbles are studied by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), combining magnetic (XMCD) contrast with about 25 nm lateral resolution as well as 70 ps time resolution. Essential progress in the understanding of magnetic vortex dynamics is achieved by vortex core reversal observed by sub-GHz excitation of the vortex gyromode, either by ac magnetic fields or spin transfer torque. The basic switching scheme for this vortex core reversal is the generation of a vortex-antivortex pair. Much faster vortex core reversal is obtained by exciting azimuthal spin wave modes with (multi-GHz) rotating magnetic fields or orthogonal monopolar field pulses in the x and y direction, down to 45 ps in duration. In that way unidirectional vortex core reversal to the vortex core “down” or “up” state only can be achieved with switching times well below 100 ps. Coupled modes of interacting vortices mimic crystal properties. The individual vortex oscillators determine the properties of the ensemble, where the gyrotropic mode represents the fundamental excitation. By self-organized state formation we investigate distinct vortex core polarization configurations and understand these eigenmodes in an extended Thiele model. Analogies with photonic crystals are drawn. Oersted fields and spin-polarized currents are used to excite the dynamics of domain walls and magnetic bubble skyrmions. From the measured phase and amplitude of the displacement of domain walls we deduce the size of the non-adiabatic spin-transfer torque. For sensing applications, the displacement of domain walls is studied and a direct correlation between domain wall velocity and spin structure is found. Finally the synchronous displacement of multiple domain walls using perpendicular field pulses is demonstrated as a possible paradigm shift for magnetic memory and logic applications.

The magnetic and magneto-optic properties of epitaxial CeY2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG) and Y3Fe5O12 (yttrium iron garnet or YIG) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on gadolinium gallium garnet substrates are determined. An enhanced Faraday effect is known to result from Ce substitution into the yttrium iron garnet lattice, and here we characterize the magneto-optic Kerr effect, as well as the magnetic hysteresis and ferromagnetic resonance response that result from the Ce substitution. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a high crystallographic quality for the Ce:YIG films. Measurements of the magneto-optic Kerr effect for two different wavelengths demonstrate that the Ce:YIG xhibits an up-to-tenfold increase in Kerr rotation compared to YIG. The Ce∶YIG has a slightly larger magnetic moment, as well as increased magnetic damping and higher magnetic anisotropy compared to YIG with a dependence on the crystalline orientation. By specific cerium substitution in YIG, our results show that the engineering of a large Kerr effect and tailored magnetic anisotropy becomes possible as required for magneto- ptically active spintronic devices.

The domain wall dynamics is used in many spintronic devices based on the uniaxial ferromagnetic wires to transport and store information. Therefore, the domain wall velocity is one of the main parameters that determine the operation speed of these devices. Recently, a big attention is being paid to amorphous glass-coated microwires due to the very high domain wall velocities that reach up to 20 km/s. In this work, the fast domain wall propagation in amorphous glass-coated microwires was found in the presence of two main factors: (i) relatively low magnetic anisotropy, (ii) complex geometry of magnetic anisotropies given by internal distribution of mechanical stresses. The domain wall dynamics was examined in amorphous glass-coated microwires of reduced diameter down to 1 μm. It was shown, that the domain wall dynamics in these wires is the same as in wires of bigger diameter. It proves that the high domain wall velocities in microwires are not the effect of microwire diameter value. The direct observation of the surface domain wall structure by use of MOKE microscope confirmed that the domain wall is inclined relatively to the main axis. A new method for magneto-optical observation of the samples with cylindrical geometry was proposed. The inclined structure of the domain wall was found to be partially responsible for the high apparent domain wall velocity measured by the Sixtus-Tonks method in microwires.; La dynamique des paroi de domaine est utilisée dans de nombreux dispositifs de spintronique basés sur des micro et nanofils magnétiques pour la transmission et le stockage de l'information. La vitesse de la paroi de domaine est donc un des paramètres qui déterminent la vitesse de fonctionnement de ces dispositifs. Actuellement, un accent considérable est mis sur la compréhension de l'origine des grandes vitesses parois de domaines dans les microfils, qui peuvent atteindre 20 km/s. Dans ce travail, des fortes vitesses de parois ont été trouvées en présence de deux principaux facteurs: (i) une valeur relativement faible de l'anisotropie magnétique, et (ii) une distribution complexe de l'anisotropie magnétique due aux contraintes internes. En outre, la dynamique d'une paroi de domaine a été étudiée pour les échantillons à diamètre réduit, jusqu'à 1 μm. Il a été démontré que la dynamique d'une paroi de domaine est la même que dans les échantillons plus épais, ce qui confirme que les vitesses élevées ne sont pas seulement liées à la taille des microfils. L'observation directe de la structure de surface des parois de domaines par microscopie MOKE confirmé la forme de la paroi de domaine inclinée par rapport à l'axe du fil. Une nouvelle méthode a été proposée pour effectuer des observations sur des échantillons cylindriques. Rýchlosť doménovej steny je preto jedným z parametrov, ktoré určujú operačnú rýchlosť týchto zariadení. V súčasnosti je kladený značný dôraz na pochopenie pôvodu veľkých rýchlostí doménovej steny v mikrodrôtoch, kde rýchlosti dosahujú až 20 km/s. Veľké rýchlosti doménovej steny v mikrodrôtoch boli v tejto práci nájdené v prítomnosti dvoch faktorov: (i) relatívne nízka hodnota magnetickej anizotropie a (ii) zložitá distribúcia magnetických anizotropií daných vnútornými pnutiami. Navyše, dynamika doménovej steny bola študovaná aj na vzorkách s redukovaným priemerom až do 1 μm. Bolo ukázané, že dynamika doménovej steny je v týchto drôtoch rovnaká ako je tomu v hrubších vzorkách, čo potvrdzuje, že vysoké rýchlosti nie sú len efektom rozmeru amorfných, sklom potiahnutých mikrodrôtoch. Priame pozorovania povrchovej štruktúry doménovej steny pomocou MOKE mikroskopu potvrdili naklonený tvar doménovej steny vzhľadom na os drôtu. Bola navrhnutá nová metóda na vykonávanie magneto-optických pozorovaní valcových vzoriek. Naklonený tvar doménovej steny bol nájdený ako jeden z faktorov umožňujúcich zdanlivo veľké rýchlosti doménovej steny meraných Sixtusovou-Tonkosvou metódou na mikrodrôtoch.
