Abstract

Polymer bounded explosives (PBXs) consist of energetic crystals coated with a polymer binder. These materials exhibit a highly heterogeneous microstructure. The initiation of the detonation phenomenon in PBXs is believed to be generated at the microstructure scale through hotspots. Hence, many of the explosives properties (initiation, desensitization, etc.) are understood as a direct consequence of their microstructure. Mesoscale modeling directly addresses the physics of hotspot formation. Unfortunately, high computational cost prevents their use on laboratory-sized and large scale experiments. In practice, continuum-scale models remain mandatory. We describe a new reactive burn model, named WGT, aiming to represent, at the continuum scale, some of the complexity of the PBX's microstructure. The initiation regime is driven by the shock temperature and results from surrogate modeling of the kinetics of a heterogeneous nucleation and growth model. The other regimes follow the formulation of the WHS2D2 reactive burn model and are driven by the local temperature. This model was calibrated on experimental results for PBX 9502 available in the literature, such as detonation velocity–curvature laws, Pop-plot data, or embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauges. Abstract

International audience; Background: Scedosporium species and Lomentospora prolificans (S/L) are the second most common causes of invasive mold infections following Aspergillus in lung transplant recipients.Methods: We assessed the current practices on management of S/L colonization/infection of the lower respiratory tract before and after lung transplantation in a large number of lung transplant centers through an international practice survey from October 2016 to March 2017.Results: A total of 51 respondents from 45 lung transplant centers (17 countries, 4 continents) answered the survey (response rate 58%). S/L colonization was estimated to be detected in candidates by 48% of centers. Only 18% of the centers used a specific medium to detect S/L colonization. Scedosporium spp. colonization was a contraindication to transplantation in 10% of centers whereas L prolificans was a contraindication in 31%; 22% of centers declared having had 1-5 recipients infected with S/L in the past 5 years.Conclusions: This survey gives an overview of the current practices regarding S/L colonization and infection in lung transplant centers worldwide and underscores the need of S/L culture procedure standardization before implementing prospective studies.

Abstract

The oxygen to metal ratio (O/M) is directly related to oxygen potential, which strongly influences the sintering and irradiation performance of nuclear fuels. A better understanding of these two parameters is therefore of major interest. To further ascertain the correlation between O/M ratio and oxygen potential in Am-bearing MOX, several ther-modynamic descriptions are being developed. Despite their differences, they all involve the valence of actinide cations (e.g. U, Pu and Am) as essential parameters. However, as no experimental data on their valence is available, these models rely on assumptions. In the present work, we coupled X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to follow the behaviour of Pu and Am in three hypo-stoichiometric, U-free Pu1-yAmyO2-x compounds. We provide for the first time a quantitative determination of Pu and Am valences, demonstrating that plutonium reduction from Pu4+ to Pu3+ starts only, once americium reduction from Am4+ to Am3+ is completed. This result fills in an important gap in experimental data, thereby improving the thermodynamic description of nuclear fuels. At last, we suggest that the O/M ratio may still evolve at room temperature for high Am content, which is of main concern for the fabrication of Am-loaded MOX and their storage prior to irradiation.

Abstract

International audience; Aims : : To obtain damage/benefit assessments of eight commonly used addictive products and one addictive behaviour from French addiction experts and link these to overall evaluations. Design and setting Criteria-based evaluation by experts in addiction. Specific statistical modelling to estimate the relative contribution of various criteria to formulating expert general opinion on products. Participants Forty-eight French experts in addiction. Measurements Twelve criteria covering the whole spectrum of damages and benefits to users and to society evaluated using visual analogue scales (VAS). Direct measure of expert overall subjective opinions on products from user and from social perspectives. Findings Damage scoring identified alcohol (damage score = 48.1), heroin (damage score = 44.9) and cocaine (damage score = 38.5) as the most harmful products to users and to society; gambling was considered the least harmful (score = 22.5), replicating previous results. Damage scoring correlated poorly with legal status or with overall subjective expert opinions of products. Benefit perception scores indicated alcohol as a clear outlier (benefit score = 45.5) followed by tobacco (benefit score = 34.3) and cannabis (benefit score = 31.1). Statistical modelling suggested that experts attributed 10 times more importance to benefit perception than to damages when making their subjective opinion from a user perspective and two times more importance to benefit perception than to damages in formulating their opinion from a social perspective. Conclusions The perceived benefits of addictive products appear to have a major impact on the opinion of those products expressed by a number of French addiction experts.

Abstract

International audience; A variable (GT)n repeat in the 5′-regulatory region of N-methyl-D-aspartate GRIN2A subtype has recently been identified and associated with psychiatric disorders. In this study, we examined the association of this polymorphism with alcohol dependence. Subject–control analysis included 206 alcohol-dependent and 168 control subjects. Average observed repeat numbers and genotype distributions were significantly different (P-value = 0.001) in alcohol-dependent subjects versus control subjects. Short alleles were significantly less frequent among alcohol-dependent subjects (odds ratio = 0.58, P-value = 7 × 10−4). These results could be replicated in an independent sample of 116 alcohol-dependent subjects. For the first time, a significant association was identified between this polymorphism and alcoholism.

International audience; A novel hydrated fluoroselenate NaCoSeO4F 3 2H2O has been synthesized, and its structure determined. Like its sulfate homologue, NaCoSO4F 3 2H2O, the structure contains one-dimensional chains of corner-sharing MO4F2 octahedra linked together through F atoms sitting in a trans configuration with respect to each other. The magnetic properties of the two phases have been investigated using powder neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements which indicate antiferromagnetic ordering along the length of the chains and result in a G-type antiferromagnetic ground state. Both compounds exhibit a N eel temperature near 4 K, and undergo a field-induced magnetic phase transition in fields greater than 3 kOe.

Abstract

Innovative mixed oxide (MOX) (U,Pu)O2-x fuels for sodium fast neutron reactors (SFRs) systems are currently studied within the framework of the fourth generation (GEN-IV) nuclear reactors development. SFRs will be able to burn long-lived minor actinides (MA) such as Americium by adding them homogeneously to the fuel in a small amount (2 to 6%). Because oxygen to metal ratio (O/M) has a direct impact on irradiation performance, a thorough knowledge of its correlation with oxygen potential during manufacturing and especially sintering is of major concern. A study by Osaka et al. [ ] highlights a conflicting redox behaviour of Am and Pu cations responsible for an unusual oxygen potential vs. O/M ratio relationship in Am-doped MOX. The reason might be that interactions between U and Am predominate and those between Pu and Am can be neglected [ ]. According to the authors, this should result in U being oxidized to a pentavalent state since Am is likely to be trivalent [ ]. We recently performed a coupled X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) characterization on substoichiometric Am-containing MOX [ ]. Our results show that Am reduction to Am+III is completed before any reduction of Pu is yet observed. Surprisingly, no pentavalent U was evidenced and the behaviour of Am tends to solely influence that of Pu. In the present work, to go deeper into the underlying phenomenon involved in the correlated redox behavior of Pu and Am, we focused on U-free sub-stoichiometric (Pu,Am)O2-x compounds. Three compositions were prepared via conventional solid-state reaction under Ar/5%H2 (1800K; 50h): (Pu0.992Am0.008)O2-x, (Pu0.9Am0.1)O2-x and (Pu0.8Am0.2)O2-x. XRD and XAS analyses were combined to selectively probe the long-range and the short-range order and the local environment of both cations. In particular, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) allows to quantitatively determining the oxidation states for each cation. XRD shows a monophasic system for each composition. Interestingly, the variation of the cell parameter vs. Am concentration is not linear. In the presentation, we shall detail and compare XRD and XAS results. Especially, we will focus on the correlation between Am content, cell parameter and ratios of Am+3/Am+4 and of Pu+3/Pu+4. We believe our results will improve comprehension of the role of Americium in the overall reduction process occuring in Americium-doped MOX fuels. They may also contribute to the development of the chemical thermodynamic models used to describe such materials.

Abstract

The synthesis of PuCrO3 compound starting from metallic or sesquioxide chromium and PuO2 powder mixtures in stoichiometric ratios has been studied at different temperatures under atmospheres with a varying oxygen potential (Ar, Ar + 5% H2, Ar + 5% H2 + 850 ppm H2O). The structure of the polycrystalline perovskite compound PuCrO3 was investigated by X-ray powder pattern fitting. A Rietveld analysis was performed using the computer program JANA 2000. PuCrO3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbnm with a = 543±2 Å, b = 549±2 Å and c = 771±2 Å. A XAS study gave oxidation states +III for both chromium and plutonium. The heat capacity of PuCrO3 was measured by means of a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in the temperature range of 373–1373 K. Debye temperature as well as electronic defect energies have been fitted from these measurements. Enthalpy increment, entropy and free energy function of PuCrO3 have been calculated from the measured heat capacity and estimated data as a function of temperature.

International audience; La cocaïne est devenue la troisième substance illicite la plus expérimentée après le cannabis et touche principalement la tranche d'âge 25-34 ans issue de milieux sociaux très différents. Cette drogue existe sous différentes formes (poudre, cocaïne base) et se consomme de différentes façons (intranasale, fumée, intraveineuse). Les consommateurs de cocaïne constituent un groupe très hétérogène. Alors que cela peut prendre plusieurs années pour qu'un sujet devienne dépendant à l'alcool ou aux benzodiazépines, la dépendance à la cocaïne s'installe classiquement plus rapidement. Cette pathologie multifactorielle s'inscrit dans un cycle comprenant une phase d'intoxication, où l'euphorie est prédominante, une phase de sevrage, une envie irrésistible de cocaïne (craving) déclenchée de différentes manières, une perte de contrôle avec un déficit de prise de décision et un comportement de recherche de produit avec une prise de risque multiple.
