In large animals, fractures of the upper long tubular bones such as forearm and humerus as well as lower and upper leg, continue to represent a major surgical challenge. An implant and a corresponding surgical procedure for intramedullary osteosynthesis in fractures of long bones were developed at fzmb GmbH. Fixation of the implanted nail to the distal drill holes has proven to be difficult and requires a high level of X-ray monitoring. Therefore, a camera-marker system (CMS) was developed without the need for X-ray monitoring during drilling. The test was performed on 10 equine femora. The results showed that 8 of 10 implants could be securely fixed and no complications occurred in the experimental procedure. For the first two implants, the distal drill holes could not be hit in the first attempt. This is due to the circumstance, that the handling of the CMS needs to be practiced to hit the distal drill holes accurately and appropriately, resulting in a hit rate of 80 %. However, the described method has great potential and does not require X-ray exposure.

Mechanical characteristics of hard and soft tissues are central features for the quantitative description of tissue properties. In this study, we present a biphasic 3D-FE-based method to determine the biomechanical properties of sheep stifle joint articular cartilage (load-bearing area of the medial and lateral femur condyle, n = 28) from stress relaxation indentation tests (s = 0.1 mm, t = 180 s). The FE-model computation was optimized by exploiting the axial symmetry and mesh resolution. Parameters were determined using the Levenberg-Marquardt-algorithm. Results showed significant differences between the biomechanical parameters of the lateral (n = 11) and medial (n = 17) femur condyle of the sheep stifle joint articular cartilage. R² of the fit results varied between 0.91 and 0.99. Overall values for the Young’s modulus were 1.316 ± 0.778 MPa, for the Poisson’s ratio 0.106 ± 0.088 and for the permeability 0.008 ± 0.004 mm4/Ns. Future work will focus on studying the influence of experimental settings on the results obtained with the biphasic 3D-FE-model.

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a prevalent injury in dogs. A consequence of a cruciate ligament rupture is instability in the affected knee joint. A veterinary, mostly surgical treatment of the cruciate ligament rupture is usually unavoidable. The suitability of an arthroscopic surgical method with ligament replacement material was investigated. The stability of the knee joint was determined several times during 1,200 passive robotic motion cycles with movement radius between 90° flexion and 140° extension. The stability condition was measured by triggering the drawer test. After 300 motion cycles, the drawer test could be triggered (positive drawer test). In the following movement cycles up to 1,200 cycles, the drawer test could also be triggered. However, no significant differences occurred between these triggered drawer tests. The ligament replacement material showed no damage and no loosening after the tests. The first results showed that the developed arthroscopic surgical method could be a promising approach for the surgical treatment of cruciate ligament ruptures in canines.

The amount of the toxic waste generated in the hospitals and medical facilities is steadily increasing. Although, the centralized disposal or waste management service solutions for the removal of toxic waste are available in highly developed industrialized countries; this does not, however, apply to the developing and emerging countries. For this reason, a compact sterilization and shredding machine was developed. The steam sterilization used (temperatures of 134 °C + 4 K and pressures of 480 to 3500 mbar) complies with the recognized procedure of the Robert Koch Institute (without chemical substances). Thus, it was possible to transform the infectious or toxic waste into non-hazardous household waste. The microbiological and physical test results show that the machine meets the requirements for sterilization of class C solid and liquid clinical wastes. The capacity of the machine is maximum 400 liters of waste per cycle, with an average cycle time of about 1 hour. It is possible to process contaminated materials both loose and in sealed disposal containers (C-boxes).

Pupillometry forms the diagnostic basis for numerous pathologies of the eye. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnostics in the field of ophthalmology are essential. Two examination techniques, full-field ERG and pupillometry were combined in a diagnostic device developed by ICM e.V. to reduce the examination process for both examiners and patients. In this paper, the device is examined for the quality of the pupillometry measurements. A study with 12 healthy subjects (3 f, 9 m, 36.33 ± 11.94 years) was conducted to evaluate the device. The results showed that the minimal pupil diameter is 40 % higher than the literature values. The main reason for the differences is the low light intensity of 15 cd/m2. However, the maximum pupil diameter is within the range of the researched values. The results of the pupillary reaction measurements show that the values obtained (amplitude, contraction time and peak time) are within the range of literature values. The latency time of 690 ms is 40 % too high. The reason for this could be the moderate pupil detection rate of 50-70 %. Nevertheless, plausible and comparable analysis values could be obtained with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000. Further work will look at improving pupil detection rates.

Full-field electroretinography (full-field ERG) forms the diagnostic basis for numerous pathologies of the eye. A feasibility study with 12 healthy subjects (3 f, 9 m, 36.33 ± 11.94 years) was conducted to evaluate the device. The results showed that the peak times for both light- and dark-adapted measurements were within the range of the researched literature values. However, the amplitudes were markedly lower in both measurements compared to the averaged literature values (dark-adapted about 8.5-fold and light-adapted about 5.5-fold) and are clearly outside the range of values researched. The main reason for this is the use of cup electrodes, which were placed on the skin of the lower eyelid. Nevertheless, plausible and comparable analysis values could be obtained with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000. Further studies with wire electrodes will be performed.

Mixed N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) / pyridyl iron(II) complexes have attracted a great deal of attention recently because of their potential as photocatalysts and light sensitizers made from Earth‐abundant elements. The most decisive challenge for their successful implementation is the lifetime of the lowest triplet metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer state (3MLCT), which typically decays via a triplet metal‐centered (3MC) state back to the ground state. We reveal by variable‐temperature ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy that the tripodal iron(II) bis(pyridine) complex isomers trans‐ and cis‐[Fe(pdmi)2]2+ with four NHC donors show 3MLCT→3MC population transfers with very different barriers and rationalize this by computational means. While trans‐[Fe(pdmi)2]2+ possesses an unobservable activation barrier, the cis isomer exhibits a barrier of 492 cm−1, which leads to a nanosecond 3MLCT lifetime at 77 K. The kinetic and quantum chemical data were analyzed in the context of semi‐classical Marcus theory revealing a high reorganization energy and small electronic coupling between the two triplet states. This highlights the importance of detailed structural control and kinetic knowledge for the rational design of photosensitizers from first row transition metals such as iron. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we present a comparison of biphasic material properties of equine articular cartilage estimated from stress relaxation (ε = 6 %, t = 1000 s) and creep indentation tests (F = 0.1 N, t = 1000 s). A biphasic 3D-FE-based method is used to determine the biomechanical properties of equine articular cartilage. The FE-model computation was optimized by exploiting the axial symmetry and mesh resolution. Parameter identification was executed with the Levenberg- Marquardt-algorithm. Additionally, sensitivity analyses of the calculated biomechanical parameters were performed. Results show that the Young’s modulus E has the largest influence and the Poisson’s ratio of ν ≤ 0.1 is rather insensitive. The R² of the fit results varies between 0.882 and 0.974 (creep model) and between 0.695 and 0.930 (relaxation model). The averaged parameters E and k determined from the creep model yield higher values in comparison to the relaxation model. The differences can be traced back to the experimental settings and to the biphasic material model.

Cartilage constructs produced by SFCTtechnology provide promising opportunities to restore cartilage defects. Mechanical parameters of soft tissues are explicit markers for quantitative tissue characterization. In this study, we present a biphasic 3D-FE-based method to determine the biomechanical properties of SFCT from stress relaxation compression tests (ε = 20 %, t = 3400 s) whereby cartilaginous tissue is modeled as a biphasic material with tension-compression nonlinearity (BMTCN). The FE-model computation was optimized by exploiting the axial symmetry and mesh resolution. The R² of the fit results varies between 0.970 and 0.983. The Young’s and fiber modulus determined from SFCT are 37-times and 5-times lower than from native articular cartilage, respectively. Permeability, on the other hand, is 11-times higher than from native articular cartilage.

This article discusses the issue of localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how this is critical for achieving human security globally. It notes that while the SDGs have been successful in generating consensus around sustainability, progress has been lacking and many targets may not be met. A key obstacle is that the SDGs have not been properly localized, which is essential given that real change needs to happen at the local level. The author argues that a bottom-up, localization-driven approach is needed to complement the existing top-down monitoring approach. This would empower local actors and allow them to develop diverse solutions through connecting and sharing ideas. A proposed solution is a digital platform that is co-created with local stakeholders and facilitates the networking of local actors as well as access to expertise. This could help drive cultural and social change from the bottom-up in support of the SDGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanical parameters of articular cartilage estimated from indentation tests depend on the constitutive model adopted to analyze the data. In this study, we present a 3D-FE-based method to determine the biomechanical properties of equine articular cartilage from stress relaxation indentation tests (ε = 6 %, t = 1000 s) whereby articular cartilage is modeled as a biphasic material without (BM) and with tension-compression nonlinearity (BMTCN). The FEmodel computation was optimized by exploiting the axial symmetry and mesh resolution. Parameter identification was executed with the Levenberg-Marquardt-algorithm. The R² of the fit results varies between 0.695 and 0.930 for the BMmodel and between 0.877 and 0.958 for the BMTCN-model. The differences of the R² occur from the more exact description of the initial stress relaxation behaviour by the fiber modulus from the BMTCN-model. The fiber modulus defines the collagen matrix of cartilage. Furthermore, for both models the determined values of Young’s modulus and permeability were in the same order of magnitude.

The determined values for the Young’s modulus were 0.806 ± 0.093 MPa, the Poisson’s ratio 0.03 ± 0.06 and the permeability 0.012 ± 0.002 mm4/Ns. Future work will deal with mathematical extensions of the biphasic 3D-FE-model.

Achieving Human Security For All (HS4A) is a process that depends on our ability to imagine a future state that is different to present conditions, under which HS4A remains elusive. Only a very few eminent thinkers have recognised, however, that imagination is its own unique and important noetic or cognitive function independent of rationality, giving us access to an ontological sphere that otherwise remains closed to us. Meanwhile, for rationalist science philosophy, which has dominated our education systems since the Enlightenment period, imagination has long been understood as nothing but a preoccupation with the unreal, the mythic, the marvelous, the fictive, and fanciful--entertaining perhaps, but of no serious consequence. In this paper, I argue that rationalist modernism, along with a mass education system designed in keeping with this modernist 'spirit of the times', has led to our collective imprisonment within the real, the concrete, and robbed us of the capacity to reflect and transform ourselves and our relationship to the world and each other. This state of affairs will ensure humanity's rapid demise given the mounting security challenges we now face, that is, unless we can reinstate the faculty of imagination within scientific epistemology and in education, and thus escape our entrapment. Conjunctivitis is a common pediatric problem and is broadly divided into infectious and non-infectious etiologies. Bacterial conjunctivitis makes up the majority of cases in children and often presents with purulent discharge and mattering of the eyelids. Treatment is supportive with an individual approach to antibiotic use in uncomplicated cases since it may shorten symptom duration, but is not without risks. Viral conjunctivitis is the other infectious cause and is primarily caused by adenovirus, with a burning, gritty feeling and watery discharge. Treatment is supportive. Allergic conjunctivitis is largely seasonal and presents with bilateral itching and watery discharge. Treatment can include topical lubricants, topical antihistamine agents, or systemic antihistamines. Other causes of conjunctivitis include foreign bodies and non-allergic environmental causes. Contact lens wearers should always be treated for bacterial conjunctivitis and referred to evaluate for corneal ulcers. Neonatal conjunctivitis requires special care with unique pathogens and considerations. This review covers essential information for the primary care pediatric provider as they assess cases of conjunctivitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A growing literature on localization of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflects persistent tensions between a generic and aspirational global sustainability agenda and the challenges that local actors face in implementing these goals under very specific local conditions. Contributors to this extant literature have struggled to resolve this tension, in part because they have not recognized that a potential solution to the problem of local diversity is inherent within emerging networks of local actors themselves. This Brief Report proposes an empowerment of local sustainability actor networks with the help of a digital infrastructure for worldwide peer exchange. It advocates for a process of global empirical data aggregation on local sustainable solutions knowledge that would fully complement the top-down agenda of the SDGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
