EVER thought it was possible for anyone to access your written word anytime from anywhere around the world. Well! That time is here now. The popularity of J-EDS as an OPEN ACCESS publication of the Electron Devices Society continues to grow. In response to this, I am again expanding the editorial board of J-EDS by adding six new subject editors. In keeping with the past tradition, these professionals are established senior researchers highly respected by their peers in their area of expertise. In addition, they also espouse the J-EDS editorial culture of being author friendly. They are committed to not only arrange a timely peer review of the manuscript but also work proactively with the author(s) in overcoming the perceived deficiencies which surface during the review process. As mentioned in my Jan. 2013 editorial [1] “In a sense, the editor is to assume a supportive role in helping the author improve the quality of the manuscript rather than simply passing a judgment.”

It seems like yesterday that the inaugural issue of IEEE Journal of Electron Devices Society (J-EDS) was published on January 1st 2013. Since then, the question keeps resurfacing why a 3rd publication was launched since Electron Devices Society already had Transactions on Electron Devices (T-ED) and Electron Device Letters (EDL) as its flagship publications. While the answer to this question was published in an earlier editorial [1] let me revisit this question briefly to set the stage for the material to follow.

As the New Year’s eve fades into the oblivion, the IEEE JOURNAL OF ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY (J-EDS) enters its fourth year of existence. The publication is experiencing a steady healthy organic growth and with support from authors and reviewers alike it will continue to blossom. Authors will be pleased to know that starting Volume 1 published in January 2013, J-EDS has been selected for coverage in the Web of Science Journal Citation Reports, Core Collection and Current Contents Connect. This is exceptional news for the technical community since it gives everyone seamless cross-referencing of the research being published in J-EDS. The launch of J-EDS was a strategic move on my part as the then President of the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS). I am confident it will serve the interests of EDS and the global technical community in an ever-changing publication landscape.

This special issue of the IEEE Journal of the Electron Devices Society (J-EDS) focuses on how one can minimize power dissipation at the solid-state device level. The scope covers all possible aspects including advanced process technologies, innovative use of materials, device concepts and structures.

This is the 4th issue of the IEEE Journal of Electron Devices Society (J-EDS). A quick survey of the papers published so far reveals the statistic that Electron Devices Society (EDS) members constitute about 50% of the J-EDS authorship. At the time J-EDS was established one of the purposes was to serve EDS members. As such, we would like EDS members to have a higher stake in the journal and hence encourage them to submit their papers to J-EDS. To facilitate this, J-EDS is developing a preferred pricing structure on papers where all authors are EDS members at the time of submission of the manuscript. We hope this will result in considerable savings to technical professionals and their organizations. At the same time it will open the doors for them to join IEEE and EDS and avail of a plethora of learning opportunities that EDS provides to its members. If you and your colleagues would like to make use of this benefit please indicate so in the submission letter along with the IEEE membership numbers for each author clarifying if they are EDS members at the time of submission.

The editorial boards of the IEEE Electron Device Letters (EDL), IEEE Journal of the Electron Devices Society (J-EDS), and the IEEE Transactions on Electron Device (T-ED) have taken note of a substantial increase in device-oriented manuscripts focused on a variety of "emerging technologies" and, as such, do not fall into traditional subject categories utilized by our journals. Examples include novel nanoelectronic devices based on various "low-dimensional" material systems such as graphene sheets, nanoribbons, carbon nanotubes, transition metal dichalcogenides, and topological insulators, etc. In recognition of this important trend, and to best serve the global electron devices community, we announce the introduction of an "Emerging Technologies and Devices" category within EDL, J-EDS, and T-ED. We recognize that a category with a title of "emerging" by definition represents a dynamic situation (today's emerging device may well become tomorrow’s mainstream device), but it is a terminology easily understood by practitioners in the field. This category will cover the physics, modeling, and operation of such low-dimensional devices, as well as the fabrication techniques needed to construct them.
