Abstract

# Background A three-day One Health training program for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals in One Health-related fields, was conducted by the Philippine One Health University Network (PhilOHUN), in collaboration with the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN), through a webinar series. To measure the impact of the training on the awareness, knowledge, attitude, and practices (A-KAP) related to the topics covered in the program, this study was conducted. # Methods A quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the effect of the One Health training program on the A-KAP of the participants. An online questionnaire developed based on the content of the training modules was administered to the participants before and after the training program. The attendees who accomplished both the pre- and post-training A-KAP assessment questionnaire were included as study participants; of the 225 attendees, 119 respondents qualified. The difference between the pre- and post-training mean A-KAP scores of participants was determined using paired t-test. # Results Findings showed that the Awareness of the participants (P\0.05) after taking part in the training. # Conclusions The significant differences in awareness and knowledge suggest that the training modules contain relevant topics, which were effectively transmitted during the program. For Attitude and Practices, it may be premature to determine the impact of a single activity, although it is expected that these will change over time. Nevertheless, the training program can be used as a springboard for introducing One Health concepts to a wider audience and a continuing initiative to influence the development of appropriate attitudes and practices for current and future One Health practitioners.

Abstract

Abstract Background Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a multifocal angioproliferative tumor involving blood and lymphatic vessels, caused by Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8). KS is an important AIDS-defining tumor with high prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania which has high HIV and HHV-8 sero-prevalence. It is critically important to monitor the prevalence of AIDS-defining tumors, such as KS, in the age of HIV/AIDS. We studied the prevalence of KS and associated risk factors among HIV-positive patients at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), a referral hospital in northern Tanzania, over the period from January 2012 to December 2015. Methods This was a retrospective hospital-based cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of KS among HIV/AIDS patients between 2012 and 2015. The study included 1100 HIV patients’ data which were collected at the Infectious Disease Clinic (IDC) from patients’ files. Stata version 13 (StataCorp LP, Texas 77,845 USA) was used for all statistical analyses. The prevalence of KS was calculated across levels of a number of categorical variables. Logistic regression was performed to determine relative risk of KS for all characteristics. We included all variables with p-values ≤10% in the multivariate analysis, including ART use, as this is considered to have an influence on KS. In the multivariate analysis, statistical significance was established based on a two-tailed p-value ≤5%. All patients’ notes were kept confidential as per the Helsinki declaration. Results Our results revealed a 4.6% prevalence of KS at KCMC hospital, between January 2012 and December 2015, 51(4.6%) patients were diagnosed with KS out of 1100 HIV-positive patients. The study further revealed that KS in HIV patients was most associated with low CD4 cell count (less than or equal to 200 cells/μl). Abstract

Martinique is the second French Region with the lowest physician-to-population ratio, which may affect waiting times for access to care. To assess (i) factors influencing waiting times from diagnosis to cancer-related treatments in breast cancer women in Martinique, and (ii) the impact of waiting times on patients' survival. Retrospective observational study. Data on women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 1st January 2013 and 31st December 2017 and initially treated by surgery were extracted from the Martinique population-based registry. A cox model was performed to find predictive factors for waiting times. A log-rank test was used to compare time-to-treatment between groups. In total, 713 patients were included (mean age: 58 ± 13). Median time from diagnosis to surgery was 40 [25–60] days. Age at diagnosis was found to predict variations in waiting times. Patients > 75 had longer waiting time to surgery than those < 40 or [40–50] (P = 0.016 and P < 0.001, respectively). Women with a time-to-treatment ≥ 4 months had a significant lower survival (P < 0.01). Specific interventions are needed to improve waiting time from diagnosis to initial treatment, as they are longer than recommended and affect survival time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Objectives Data are scarce regarding the potential clinical differences between non-late onset schizophrenia (NLOS, i.e., disorder occurring before 40 years of age), late-onset schizophrenia (LOS, occurring between ages 40 and 60 years) and very-late-onset schizophrenia-like psychosis (VLOSLP, occurring after 60 years of age). Furthermore, previous research compared LOS patients with non-age matched NLOS patients. In this study, we sought to examine potential clinical differences between patients of similar age with LOS and NLOS. Methods/Design This is a cross-sectional multicentre study that recruited in- and outpatients older adults (aged >= 55 years) with an ICD-10 diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder with NLOS and LOS. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidity, psychotropic medications, quality of life, functioning, and mental health care utilization were drawn for comparison. Results Two hundred seventy-two participants (79.8%) had NLOS, 61 (17.9%) LOS, and 8 (2.3%) VLOSLP. LOS was significantly and independently associated with greater severity of emotional withdrawal and lower severity of depression (all p < 0.05). However, the magnitude of these associations was modest, with significant adjusted odds ratios ranging from 0.71 to 1.24, and there were no significant between-group differences in other characteristics. Conclusion In an age-matched multicenter sample of elderly patients with schizophrenia, older adults with LOS were largely similar to older adults with NLOS in terms of clinical characteristics. The few differences observed may be at least partially related to symptom fluctuation with time. Implications of these findings for pharmacological and nonpharmacological management is yet to be determined.

Abstract

Leptospirosis is a major public health problem in many countries, especially in southeast Asia, including the Philippines. It is considered an occupational risk both in rural and urban settings, notably among sewer workers. Rodents, especially rats, are the most important reservoirs of the disease and can continuously shed Leptospira through their urine - contaminating their surroundings, including the work environment of sewer workers. Despite the apparent occupational risk, there are limited seroprevalence studies conducted among sewer workers in the country. This study reports the current seroprevalence among sewer workers, as well as the Leptospira serovars they are exposed to. Serum samples obtained from 105 sewer workers in the West Zone of Metro Manila were subjected to microscopic agglutination test (MAT). A cut-off titer of 1:100 was used to detect exposure of sewer workers to Leptospira. Results showed that five out of 105 sewer workers were seropositive for Leptospira-agglutinating antibodies, particularly against serovar Mini. The seropositive sewer workers also reported work-related practices and characteristics that might have consistently exposed them to Leptospira-contaminated sewer environments. These practices include wading in combined sewer overflow (CSO), maintenance holes, and septic tanks as a part of their jobs; getting sewer water splashes in their eyes, nose, or mouth while cleaning at least once or twice a week; and going to work despite having cuts or bruises. 46. Inhibitory Activity of Propolis from Philippine Stingless Bees (Tetragonula biroi Friese) against Select Microorganisms.

Abstract

The antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) from the stingless bee, Tetragonula biroi Friese, was screened for activity against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Bacillus cereus,Candida krusei, Staphylococcus aureus, and Penicillium chrysogenum using the disk diffusion method and agar-well assay. The highest inhibitory activities of EEP was observed at 30% (w/v) against Bacillus cereus (12.78 ± 1.92 mm), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (10.22 ± 0.83 mm), Penicillium chrysogenum (13.33 ± 2.40 mm), and Candida krusei (6.00 ± 0.00 mm) compared to the other concentrations – 10% (v/v) and 20% (v/v) of EEP. The antimicrobial activity of 30% w/v EEP against P. chrysogenum and C. krusei was comparable to mycostatin at 13.67 ± 0.58 and 6.33 ± 0.58 mm, respectively. The EEP was found to have no effect on Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Considered as a natural product, propolis has the potential to be a substitute for synthetic antimicrobial compounds commonly used in commercial products such as soaps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
