Wire regelation is a common tabletop demonstration of the pressure-dependence of the ice melting temperature where a loaded wire moves from top to bottom through a block of ice, yet leaves the block intact. With the background temperature fixed at the bulk melting point ∼0°C, the elevated ice and liquid pressures beneath the wire cause melting because of the negative Clapeyron slope, while refreezing takes place above the wire where the pressures are reduced. Regelation is a model for temperate glacier ice moving through small bedrock obstacles. Laboratory experiments demonstrate that regelation continues to occur, albeit at much slower velocities, when the fixed background ice temperature is cold enough that the wire load is insufficient to produce bulk melting, suggesting that premelting plays a central role. Here, we compile available data for wire regelation at all temperatures. We then develop a model for the subtemperate data points, where the film thickness depends on the temperature below the melting point. We find agreement between the power-law model and the laboratory data for slow regelation velocities, allowing us to characterize the dominant premelting mechanisms for different wire compositions. Most theoretical descriptions of stresses induced by freezing are rooted in the (generalized) Clapeyron equation, which predicts the pressure that a solid can exert as it cools below its melting temperature. This equation is central for topics ranging beyond glaciology to geomorphology, civil engineering, food storage and cryopreservation. However, it has inherent limitations, requiring isotropic solid stresses and conditions near bulk equilibrium. Here, we examine when the Clapeyron equation is applicable by providing a rigorous derivation that details all assumptions. We demonstrate the natural extension for anisotropic stress states, and we show how the temperature and pressure ranges for validity depend on well-defined material properties. Finally, we demonstrate how the range of applicability of the (linear) Clapeyron equation can be extended by adding higher-order terms, yielding results that are in good agreement with experimental data for the pressure melting of ice. Ice-infiltrated sediment, or frozen fringe, is responsible for phenomena such as frost heave, ice lenses and metres of debris-rich ice under glaciers. Understanding frozen fringes is important as frost heave is responsible for damaging infrastructure at high latitudes and sediment freeze-on at the base of glaciers can modulate subglacial friction, influencing the rate of global sea level rise. Here we describe the thermomechanics of liquid water flow and freezing in ice-saturated sediments, focusing on the conditions relevant for subglacial environments. The force balance that governs the frozen fringe thickness depends on the weight of the overlying material, the thermomolecular force between ice and sediments across liquid premelted films and the water pressure required by Darcy flow. We combine this mechanical model with an enthalpy method that conserves energy across phase change interfaces on a fixed computational grid. The force balance and enthalpy model together determine the evolution of the frozen fringe thickness and our simulations predict frost heave rates and ice lens spacing. Our model accounts for premelting at ice–sediment contacts, partial ice saturation of the pore space, water flow through the fringe, the thermodynamics of the ice–water–sediment interface and vertical force balance. We explicitly account for the formation of ice lenses, regions of pure ice that cleave the fringe at the depth where the interparticle force vanishes. Small quantities of liquid water lining triple junctions in polycrystalline glacier ice form connected vein networks that enable material exchange with underlying basal environments. Diffuse debris concentrations commonly observed in ice marginal regions might be attributed to this mechanism. Following recent cryogenic ring-shear experiments, we observed emplacement along grain boundaries of loess particles several tens of microns in size. Here, we describe an idealized model of vein liquid flow to elucidate conditions favoring such particle transport. Gradients in liquid potential drive flow toward colder temperatures and lower solute concentrations, while deviations of the ice stress state from hydrostatic balance produce additional suction toward anomalously low ice pressures. Our model predicts particle entrainment following both modest warming along the basal interface resulting from anticipated natural changes in effective stress, and the interior relaxation of temperature and solute concentration imposed by our experimental protocols. Comparisons with experimental observations are encouraging, but suggest that liquid flow rates are somewhat higher and/or more effective at dragging larger particles than predicted by our idealized model with nominal parameter choices. Diffuse debris entrainment extending several meters above the glacier bed likely requires a more sophisticated treatment that incorporates effects of ice deformation or other processes. Owing to the need to redesign the energy infrastructure due to reducing fossil fuel availability and effects of climate change, the focus has shifted to biofuels. However, microalgal biofuels are not yet viable because of low productivity of biomass and compounds such as lipids and carbohydrates and the technological limitations in harvesting and collecting microalgal bioproducts. In order to improve the potential of microalgal biofuels, stress strategies are being developed to optimize the cultivation processes. New methods of harvesting are being proposed considering the costs involved. This review discusses strategies for carbohydrate and lipid accumulation in microalgae biomass and harvesting, focusing on the use of coagulation and flocculation methods. The importance of glacier sliding has motivated a rich literature describing the thermomechanical interactions between ice, liquid water and bed materials. Early recognition of the gradient in melting temperature across small bed obstacles led to focused studies of regelation. An appreciation for the limits on ice deformation rates downstream of larger obstacles highlighted a role for cavitation, which has subsequently gained prominence in descriptions of subglacial drainage. Here, we show that the changes in melting temperature that accompany changes in normal stress along a sliding ice interface near cavities and other macroscopic drainage elements cause appreciable supercooling and basal mass exchange. Flow through partially frozen pores in granular media containing ice or gas hydrate plays an essential role in diverse phenomena including methane migration and frost heave. As freezing progresses, the frozen phase grows in the pore space and constricts flow paths so that the permeability decreases. Previous works have measured the relationship between permeability and volumetric fraction of the frozen phase, and various correlations have been proposed to predict permeability change in hydrology and the oil industry. However, predictions from different formulae can differ by orders of magnitude, causing great uncertainty in modeling results. We present a floating random walk method to approximate the porous flow field and estimate the effective permeability in isotropic granular media with specified particle size distributions, without solving for the entire flow field in the pore space. In packed spherical particles, the method compares favorably with the Kozeny‐Carman formula. We further extend this method with a probabilistic interpretation of the volumetric fraction of the frozen phase, simulate the effect of freezing in irregular pores, and predict the evolution of permeability. Employing no adjustable parameters, our results can provide insight into the coupling between phase transitions and permeability change, which plays important roles in hydrate formation and dissociation, as well as in the thawing and freezing of permafrost and ice‐bed coupling beneath glaciers. Ice stream discharge responds to a balance between gravity, basal friction and lateral drag. Appreciable viscous heating occurs in shear margins between ice streams and adjacent slow-moving ice ridges, altering the temperature-dependent viscosity distribution that connects lateral drag to marginal strain rates and ice stream velocity. Warmer ice deforms more easily and accommodates faster flow, whereas cold ice supplied from ice ridges drives advective cooling that counteracts viscous heating. Here, we present a two-dimensional (three velocity component), steady-state model designed to explore the thermal controls on ice stream shear margins. We validate our treatment through comparison with observed velocities for Bindschadler Ice Stream and verify that calculated temperatures are consistent with results from previous studies. Sweeping through a parameter range that encompasses conditions representative of ice streams in Antarctica, we show that modeled steady-state velocity has a modest response to different choices in forcing up until temperate zones develop in the shear margins. When temperate zones are present, velocity is much more sensitive to changes in forcing. We identify key scalings for the emergence of temperate conditions in our idealized treatment that can be used to identify where thermo-mechanical feedbacks influence the evolution of the ice sheet. Freezing in porous media is associated with a host of dynamic phenomena that stem from the presence and mobility of premelted liquid at subzero temperatures. Accurate assessments of the progressive liquid‐ice phase transition is required for predictive models of frost damage, glacier‐till coupling, and many other cold regions processes, as well as for evaluating the capacity for water storage in near‐surface extraterrestrial environments. We use a Monte Carlo approach to sample the pore space in a synthetic 3D packing of poly‐dispersed spherical particles and evaluate local geometrical constraints that allow us to assess changes in the relative proportions of pore fluid and ice. By approximating the phase boundary geometry in fine‐grained pores while considering both the curvature of the liquid‐ice interface and wetting interactions with matrix particles, our model predicts changes in phase equilibrium in granular media over a broad temperature range, where present accounting for the colligative effects of chloride and perchlorate solutes. In addition to formulating the constitutive behavior needed to better understand properties and processes in frozen soils, our results also provide insight into other aspects of phase equilibria in porous media, including the formation of methane hydrates in permafrost and marine sediments, and the partitioning between liquid water and vapor in the vadose zone. The soil freezing curves (SFCs) describe how the amount of water remaining liquid in pore spaces changes with temperature, which is also determined by the geometry of pores. Previous researches tend to idealize the pores as spheres or cylinders, but the actual pores have irregular geometry, and the interface between water and ice can be so curved that liquid water may exist at temperatures much lower than bulk freezing point. To quantitatively assess the relation between the undercooling and residual liquid water in frozen soils, we construct synthetic soil models with packed spherical particles and use a Monte Carlo approach to track the ice‐liquid interface over a large temperature range. We examine cases with soil particles of uniform size and log‐normal size distributions and compare our results with ice‐infiltration experiments, field observations, and mercury intrusion measurements. Additional factors, including changes in wetting behavior and various dissolved salts, are also taken into account. The model can shed light on the formation of ice and gas hydrate in permafrost and extraterrestrial systems. The management of whey is a challenge for dairy products where the volume produced is remarkable. This problem is minimized through membrane separation processes (MSP) to obtain whey protein concentrate, which has high added value. However, a permeate effluent stream is still generated that is composed of lactose, vitamins, and minerals, which can serve as raw material for the production of biotechnological compounds. Thus, this study aimed to produce biosurfactants using the permeate from whey ultrafiltration as part of the culture media of the bioprocess, to recover the biosurfactant produced using MSP, and to identify the biocompound. The production was carried out using Bacillus methylotrophicus and Bacillus pumilus. The variables nitrogen source (urea or ammonium sulfate), nitrogen source concentration (0.5% or 1.0%), inducer (soybean oil or biodiesel), inducer concentration (1% or 2%), and the addition of micronutrients (with our without) were studied using a fractional factorial experimental design 25‐1IV. In the fermentation processes, it was possible to verify the biosurfactant production through the reduction of surface tension, obtaining a minimum value of 35.07 mN/m for B. methylotrophicus and 26.02 mN/m for B. pumilus. Recovery via MSP was an efficient strategy for biosurfactant purification, which was concentrated in the fraction of the retentate. Glacier sliding over small obstacles relies on melting on their upstream sides and refreezing downstream. Previous treatments have appealed to 'pressure melting' as the cause of the spatial variations in melting temperature that drive this regelation process. However, we show that typical liquid pressure variations across small obstacles are negligible and therefore variations in ice pressure closely approximate variations in effective stress. For a given change in effective stress, the equilibrium melting temperature changes by an order of magnitude more than when the pressure of ice and liquid both change by an equal amount. In consequence, the temperature gradients that drive heat flow across small obstacles are larger than previously recognized and the rate of regelation is faster. Under typical conditions, the transition wavelength at which ice deformation and regelation contribute equally is of m-scale, several times longer than previous predictions, which have been reported to underestimate field inferences. We aimed to use physical methods of microalgal biomass rupture to study saccharification strategies using free and immobilized amylolytic enzymes. The biomass of Spirulina platensis , which consists of 50–60% carbohydrates, was exposed to physical cell rupture treatments, with better results obtained using freeze/thaw cycles following by gelatinization. In saccharification tests, it was possible to hydrolyze Spirulina biomass with hydrolysis efficiencies above 99% and 83%, respectively, using 1% (v/v) of free enzymes or 1% (m/v) of amylolytic enzymes immobilized together. The use of free and immobilized enzymes yielded high levels of conversion of polysaccharides to simple sugars in Spirulina biomass, showing that these processes are promising for the advancement of bioethanol production using microalgal biomass. Abstract: The occurrence of methane hydrate in marine reservoirs often correlates with the physical properties of the host sediments. High hydrate saturations (>60% of the pore volume) found in association with coarser‐grained strata have been attributed to both enhanced advective transport through more permeable sediment layers and to perturbations in phase equilibrium related to pore space geometry that results in increased diffusive transport. To assess the relative importance of these mechanism in controlling hydrate occurrence, we develop a 1‐D model for hydrate growth along dipping, coarse‐grained layers embedded in a fine‐grained sediment package. We explicitly account for pore size effects on methane solubility and permeability‐driven variations in fluid flux. We show how the vertical distribution of hydrate varies in response to changes in grain size and rates of fluid advection, sedimentation, and in situ methane production. We then use our model to simulate centimeter‐scale variations in hydrate saturation observed at Walker Ridge Block 313, Hole H in the Gulf of Mexico. We find that the largest concentrations of hydrate are controlled by diffusion, while increased advective methane supply favors more distributed growth throughout high‐permeability regions. Our results hold promise for using well log‐derived estimates of hydrate saturation to infer sediment properties and the sources and rates of methane supply during reservoir emplacement. Subduction faults accumulate stress during long periods of time and release this stress suddenly, during earthquakes, when it reaches a threshold. This threshold, the shear strength, controls the occurrence and magnitude of earthquakes. We consider a 3-D model to derive an analytical expression for how the shear strength depends on the fault geometry, the convergence obliquity, frictional properties, and the stress field orientation. We then use estimates of these different parameters in Japan to infer the distribution of shear strength along a subduction fault. We show that the 2011 M w9.0 Tohoku earthquake ruptured a fault portion characterized by unusually small variations in static shear strength. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that large earthquakes preferentially rupture regions with relatively homogeneous shear strength. With increasing constraints on the different parameters at play, our approach could, in the future, help identify favorable locations for large earthquakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
