Taking the Flemish-born artist Roelant Savery's Das Paradies (1626) as a starting point, this essay explores the role of European artistic cultures and collecting practices in inciting the ecocide of the post-1492 Anthropocene Extinction. In particular, I explore how Savery's celebrated painting of Adam and Eve consuming the forbidden fruit amidst a verdant landscape inhabited by animals such as the now-extinct dodo, endemic to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, became the pivotal foundation for scientific and cultural perceptions of the extinction of nonhuman life in colonial worlds as the natural outcome of European modernity's global flows. We examine the link between simulation experience and the performance in real money accounts. We find that more active simulator users, simulator users who take on more risk, and simulator users with the best stock-level performance (but not portfolio-level performance) are more likely to open real money accounts. These users are also likely to be more active real money traders and significantly underperform in their real money trades. These results suggest that without proper education regarding the hazards of active trading and accurate performance evaluation, stock simulator users may draw incorrect inferences regarding their trading skill and experience real-money underperformance. Strong spin–orbit coupling (SOC) in iridates has long been predicted to lead to exotic electronic and magnetic ground states. Ba 2 YIr O 6 (BYIO) has attracted particular attention due to the expectation of a J eff = 0 state for Ir 5 + ions under the j j -coupling scheme. However, controversies surround the actual realization of this state, as finite magnetic moments are consistently observed experimentally. We present a multi-physics study of this system by progressively introducing nonmagnetic Sb 5 + ions in place of Ir 5 + ( Ba 2 YIr ​ 1 − y Sb ​ y O ​ 6 , BYISO). Despite similar charge and ionic radii, Sb ​ 5 + doping appears highly inhomogeneous, coexisting with a fraction of nearly pure BYIO regions, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). This aligns with observations in related compounds. While inhomogeneity creates uncertainty, the doped majority phases offer valuable insights. It is relevant that the inclusion of even small amounts of Sb ​ 5 + (10–20%) leads to a rise in magnetization. This strengthens our previous suggestion that magnetic Ir ions form dynamic singlets in BYIO, resulting in a near-nonmagnetic background. The observed moment enhancement with nonmagnetic doping supports the breakdown of these singlets. Furthermore, the magnetization steadily increases with an increasing Sb ​ 5 + content, contradicting the anticipated approach towards the J eff = 0 state with increased SOC due to reduced hopping between Ir ​ 5 + ions. This reinforces the presence of individual Ir ​ 5 + moments. Overall, our findings suggest that Ba ​ 2 YIrO ​ 6 might not possess sufficiently strong SOC to be solely described within the j j -coupling picture, paving the way for further investigation. The twentieth century was deeply grooved with the trodden pathways of mass migrations. These journeys were propelled by violence and historical cataclysm: pogroms and genocides; natural and unnatural famines and disasters; land dispossession, regimes of apartheid and forced labor; revolution, war, and occupation; colonization and decolonization; and the realignments that followed in their wake. The pioneering sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois may have been the first to herald the character of the new century: Already in 1903, in his treatise The Souls of Black Folk, he situated "the color line" as the defining "problem of the twentieth century" in relation to diaspora. Theorists and writers as diverse as Georg Simmel, Paul Gilroy, E?douard Glissant, Kobena Mercer, Tony Judt, Brent Hayes Edwards, Fred Moten, Krista Thompson, Huey Copeland, and Saidiya Hartman have offered frameworks for understanding diaspora as a cultural formation inextricable from modernity itself. As their work suggests, diasporic thinking puts pressure on the ways that we have understood—and often continue to understand—both modernism and the modern. It counters linear narratives of time, geography, and memory; identities defined by national boundaries; the absence of concerns about race and the complicity that modernisms have had with regimes of power; and a vision of the modern severed from heritage or tradition. Yet despite the diasporic displacements that define the modern period, modernist studies within art history have often favored bounded narrative formations still fundamentally shaped by ideas of the individual and the nation-state as well as taxonomic categorizations according to style, movement, medium, and period. In part, these narrative choices both produce and are symptomatic of a deeply siloed field, cleaved into regional micro-domains (Americanists, Mexicanists); medium specialists (photo people and print people); and the imagined ruptures between the mod- ern and the contemporary, the modern and the postmodern, and the Western and the non-Western. Departmental structures, journals, job markets, museums, and galleries are still siloed by race, siphoned into forms of intellectual segregation that are normalized to an extraordinary degree. Art history, in other words, is divided. Given this, what should we do with the modern? The questions are many: How does attention to diasporic thinking shift our understanding of the modern—or does such thinking invalidate its historical and epistemological claims? How do we create space for the unseen and unthought? How do we write history in a mode skeptical of grand narratives that takes account of darkness as well as light? Or, following Fred Moten's explorations regarding a Black avant-garde: How do notions of avant-gardism put pressure on the ways in which we continue to understand modernism? Does the term "modernism" itself have continued viability and usefulness? If so, to what degree is diaspora—the propulsive vectors and cultural effects of multiple mass migrations—integral to it? Or are modernism and the interests of diaspora antithetical frameworks for the history of art, given what the former has historically enabled and repressed? And, finally, what methodological approaches might reveal its structuring forces in our approach to the cultural objects of the modern period? (Leah Dickerman for the Editors.) For arsenic decontamination from groundwater, arsenic crystallization is becoming adopted due to its sustainability and economic benefits. However, arsenic crystallization technology is a two-step process, which makes it complex and generates hazardous waste. Successful efforts toward making it a single-step process are presented here. The addition of nanorods and ball-milled zinc sulfide nanoparticles to arsenic-contaminated water result in highly monodispersed and high-arsenic-containing mineralized nanowaste with a crystalline structure similar to the mineral Tooeleite ((Fe3+6(As3+O3)4SO4(OH)4·4H2O)). This study reports the results of a short-term stability test based on a toxicity characteristic leaching procedure and a long-term stability test of the mineralized synthetic nanowaste produced from water treatment. The Tooeleite-like mineralized nanowaste passed short-term stability tests. Arsenic in the leachate were found to be 1.1 ± 0.2 mg L−1 and 4.8 ± 0.3 mg L−1 from waste generated by the nanorod and ball-milled nanoparticles, respectively. The crystallinity was well preserved, as observed from the post-stability-test diffraction patterns, consequently proving that the waste product can be non-hazardous and therefore would not require any secondary treatment before final disposal. We examine the relation between public pension plan chief investment officer (CIO) compensation and plans' investment performance. Higher paid CIOs outperform their counterparts by 47–60 basis points per year, largely through increased and superior investment in private equity and real estate. This outperformance generates an additional $74.91–$95.63 million in economic value. Plans offering higher compensation hire better educated CIOs and are more likely to retain their CIOs. Higher CIO compensation is positively correlated with the use of incentive compensation, but incentive compensation does not directly affect performance. Demand- and supply-side frictions help explain the variation in CIO pay and the persistent low compensation paid by some plans despite the positive relation between compensation and performance. Among the species that went extinct in the last 500 plus years under colonial regimes, the ill-fated dodo became an early icon of the Anthropocene Extinction. While much has been written on the biotechnological apparatuses that expedited the extinction of the dodo, it was the complicity of Western European imperialism and early modern aesthetic regimes that were responsible for the ecocide of the Anthropocene (read Eurocene) Extinction.
