Given the current maturity of printed technologies, Organic Thin-Film Transistors (OTFT) still show high initial variability, which can be beneficial for its exploitation in security applications. In this work, the process-related variability and aging of commercial OTFTs have been characterized to evaluate the feasibility of OTFTs-based Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) implementation. For our devices, ID-based PUFs show good uniformity and uniqueness. However, PUFs' reliability could be compromised because of the observed transient and aging effects in the OTFTs, which could hinder the reproducibility of the generated fingerprints. A systematic study of the aging of OTFTs has been performed to evaluate the PUFs' reliability. Our results suggest that the observed transient and aging effects could be mitigated so that the OTFTs-based PUFs' reliability could be improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their complex formulation, conductive nanoparticle inks for inkjet printing are limited in terms of the types of metals and substrates that can be utilized. A new and simplified class of inks called metal salt decomposition (MSD) inks has the potential to introduce a multitude of metals, which can be printed directly onto a wide range of substrates. Here, the use of atmospheric oxygen plasma to develop polycrystalline Au and Pt films at processing temperatures near room temperature (≈33 °C) with excellent conductivities up to 105 S m−1 is demonstrated. The conformal nature of the ink allows metal films to be printed onto a broad range of temperature‐sensitive substrates including polymers, papers, and fabric. The Au ink is then used to build a simple light‐emitting diode circuit showing its flexibility, durability, and long‐term stability as deposited thin metal films. In this paper, an organic, fully recyclable and eco-friendly 20-bit inkjet-printed chipless RFID tag is presented. The tag operates in the near field and is implemented by means of chains of resonant elements. The characterization and manufacturing process of the tag, printed with a few layers of a commercial organic ink on conventional paper substrate (DIN A4), are presented, and tag functionality is demonstrated by reading it by means of a custom-designed reader. The tags are read by proximity (through the near field), by displacing them over a resonator-loaded transmission line, and each resonant element (bit) of the tag is interrogated by a harmonic signal tuned to the resonance frequency. This article presents a pressure sensor composed of a set of three Archimedean spiral inductors. One of them is below the other two concentric spirals, where the upper coils are over a flexible membrane. When external pressure is applied over the sensor, the membrane deforms and changes the distance between the lower spirals and the upper inside coil, the capacitance, and its resonance frequency. However, once the sensor is in contact with a conductive medium, a change in the effective permittivity surrounding the sensor takes place reshaping the resonant frequencies. To improve the sensor response, we introduce a reader resonator sensor system. We present the comparative response of the system as a prototype, an analytical model, and a finite element model (FEM). The prototype system is fabricated using a photolithographic process for the elements of the sensor over a polymethylsiloxane and glass substrate, while the reader is fabricated over a FR4 substrate. COMSOL Multiphysics is used for the FEM simulation of the system to evaluate its behavior. The analytical model involves the integration of techniques to obtain the effective permittivity for each element plane and a coupled magnetic resonance to represent the interaction of the parts. We obtain a correspondence between the resonances of the different elements, with a maximum displacement frequency of 240 MHz for the proposed model, and 80 MHz in the FEM case related to the implemented prototype. Organic Devices offer low-cost manufacturing and better flexibility, sustainability and solution-processability than their Si-based MOS counterparts, which make them suitable for new applications where those characteristics are an advantage. However, organic device performance is still far from that provided by CMOS technology and many issues are still unclear. In this work, a performance comparison is made between Interdigitated and Corbino geometries of Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFT), with different areas but fabricated with identical stack materials and techniques. To this end, I-V characteristics and C-V curves of the OTFTs were measured and a Common-Source circuit was proposed and implemented for extracting relevant electrical parameters of the devices, through a standard small signal analysis. The parameter extraction methodology in the frequency domain proposed allows rapid testing of the device/circuit performance of this technology, which for the first time is applied to organic devices. Results show that despite the large voltages, organic transistors exhibit similar channel dimension dependencies to MOS devices and can be also described by the same small signal model. Electrolyte-gated thin-film transistors (EGTs) with indium oxide channel, and expected lifetime of three months, enable low-voltage operation (~1 V) in the field of printed electronics (PEs). The channel width of our printed EGTs is varied between 200 and 1000 μm, whereas a channel length between 10 and 100 μm is used. Due to the lack of uniform performance p-type metal oxide semiconductors, n-type EGTs and passive elements are used to design circuits. For logic gates, transistor–resistor logic has been employed so far, but depletion- and enhancement-mode EGTs in a transistor–transistor logic boost the circuit performance in terms of delay and signal swing. In this article, the threshold voltage of the EGT, which determines the operation mode, is tuned through sizing of the EGTs channel geometry. The feasibility of both transistor operation modes is demonstrated for logic gates and ring oscillators. An inverter operating at a supply voltage of 1 V shows a maximum gain of 9.6 and a propagation delay time of 0.7 ms, which represents an improvement of ~2 × for the gain and oscillation frequency, in comparison with the resistor–transistor logic design. The rise of internet of things (IoTs) applications has led to the development of a new generation of light‐weight, flexible, and cost‐effective electronics. These devices and sensors have to be simultaneously easily replaceable and disposable while being environmentally sustainable. Thus, the introduction of new functionalized materials with mechanical flexibility that can be processed using large‐area and facile fabrication methods (as, for example, printing technologies) has become a matter of great interest in the scientific community. In this context, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are renewable, affordable, robust, and nontoxic materials that are rapidly emerging as components for eco‐friendly electronics. Their combination with conductive polymers (CPs) to obtain conductive nanopapers (CNPs) allows moving their functionality from just substrates to active components of the device. In this work, a route for the inkjet‐printing of organic diodes is outlined. The proposed strategy is based on the use of CNPs as both substrates and bottom electrodes onto which insulator and organic semiconducting layers are deposited to fabricate novel diode structures. Remarkable rectification ratios of up to 1.2 × 103 at |3 V| and a current density up to 5.1 µA cm−2 are achieved. Oxide semiconductors have the potential to increase the performance of inkjet printed microelectronic devices such as field-effect transistors (FETs), due to their high electron mobilities. Typical metal oxides are n-type semiconductors, while p-type oxides, although realizable, exhibit lower carrier mobilities. Therefore, the circuit design based on oxide semiconductors is mostly in n-type logic only. Here we present an inkjet printed pn-diode based on p- and n-type oxide semiconductors. Copper oxide or nickel oxide is used as p-type semiconductor whereas n-type semiconductor is realized with indium oxide. The measurements show that the pn-diodes operate in the voltage window typical for printed electronics and the emission coefficient is 1.505 and 2.199 for the copper oxide based and nickel oxide based pn-diode, respectively. Chipless RF identification (RFID) technology has emerged as an alternative to RFID systems that have tags equipped with silicon integrated circuits (ICs), or chips [1]-[12]. The main advantage of chipless RFID systems over their chipped counterparts is the lower cost of the tags, which results from the fact that the ID code is contained in a printed planar encoder (implementable with conductive inks) rather than stored in a silicon chip. Low-cost tags (below the US$0.01 barrier) are necessary in many RFID applications involving items that have a moderate or low price and where chip-based tagging would represent a significant penalty in terms of the overall expense. A chipless radio-frequency identification (chipless-RFID) and sensing system, where tags are read by proximity (near-field) through a switch, is presented. The tags consist of a set of identical resonant elements (split-ring resonators or SRRs), printed or etched at predefined and equidistant positions, forming a linear chain, each SRR providing a bit of information. The logic state (‘1’ or ‘0’) associated with each resonator depends on whether it is present or not in the predefined position. The reader is an array of power splitters used to feed a set of SRR-loaded transmission lines (in equal number to the number of resonant elements, or bits, of the tag). The feeding (interrogation) signal is a harmonic (single-tone) signal tuned to a frequency in the vicinity of the fundamental resonance of the SRRs. The set of SRR-loaded lines must be designed so that the corresponding SRRs are in perfect alignment with the SRRs of the tag, provided the tag is positioned on top of the reader. Thus, in a reading operation, as long as the tag is very close to the reader, the SRRs of the tag modify (decrease) the transmission coefficient of the corresponding reader line (through electromagnetic coupling between both SRRs), and the amplitude of the output signal is severely reduced. Therefore, the identification (ID) code of the tag is contained in the amplitudes of the output signals of the SRR-loaded lines, which can be inferred sequentially by means of a switching system. Unlike previous chipless-RFID systems based on near-field and sequential bit reading, the tags in the proposed system can be merely positioned on top of the reader, conveniently aligned, without the need to mechanically place them across the reader. Since tag reading is only possible if the tag is very close to the reader, this system can be also used as a proximity sensor with applications such as target identification. The proposed chipless-RFID and sensing approach is validated by reading a designed 4-bit tag. For identification purposes, this system is of special interest in applications where a low number of bits suffice, and tag reading by proximity is acceptable (or even convenient). Applications mostly related to secure paper, particularly involving a limited number of items (e.g., exams, ballots, etc.), in order to provide authenticity and avoid counterfeiting, are envisaged. A high data capacity chipless radio frequency identification (chipless-RFID) system, useful for security and authentication applications, is presented in this paper. Reading is based on the near-field coupling between the tag, a chain of identical split-ring resonators (SRRs) printed on a (typically flexible) dielectric substrate (e.g., liquid crystal polymer, plastic, and paper), and the reader. Encoding is achieved by the presence or absence of SRRs at predefined (equidistant) positions in the chain, and tag identification (ID) is based on sequential bit reading. Namely, the tag must be longitudinally displaced, at short distance, over the reader, a microstrip line loaded with an SRR and fed by a harmonic signal. By this means, the harmonic signal is amplitude modulated, and the (ID) code is contained in the envelope function, which can be obtained by means of an envelope detector. With this system, tag reading requires proximity with the reader, but this is not an issue in many applications within the domain of security and authentication (e.g., secure paper for corporate documents and certificates). Several circularly shaped 40-bit encoders (implemented in a commercial microwave substrate), and the corresponding reader, are designed and fabricated as proof-of-concept demonstrators. Over the past decade, inkjet technology has been well recognized for the manufacturing of products that include 'printing beyond colors.' This micrometer-scale precise technology provides a straightforward approach toward judicious deposition of electronically functional material inks on various substrates over relatively large areas, for printed/flexible electronics. The technology promotes upscalability and has become a renowned process tool for fabricating electronic devices in the field of printed/flexible electronics. Here, the fabrication of printed thin-film transistors (TFT) on cheap coated paper substrate using inkjet technology is reported. For developing the TFT layer stack conductive nanoparticle inks, a polymeric dielectric ink and a p-type organic semiconductor ink are employed. The coating on the paper provides several advantages for fabrication process of TFTs; for example, control over ink spreading. This control of ink spreading can directly influence the fabrication of interdigitated source/drain (S/D) electrodes for TFTs, when a top gate bottom contact architecture is considered. This results in better manufacturing yields and promising electrical performance, which are also the focus of this research. The all inkjet-printed TFTs on paper exhibit electrical performance with maximum S/D current ranging to 170 nA, charge carrier mobility of 0.087 cm2 V−1 s−1, and current on/off ratio of 330. Inkjet printed electronics is a promising technology for low-cost, flexible, and large area manufacturing of electronic systems. This paper presents a complete characterization methodology, automated and capable of extracting key technology parameters from a large amount of samples. We used this methodology to extract viable compensation strategies for a particular printer, ink, and substrate, analyzing more than a half million structures with a very low human interaction. The results show a promising improvement in yield and fidelity of printed patterns, when using an optimal compensation pattern. In this letter, a chipless radio frequency identification (chipless-RFID) system with erasable/programmable 40-bit tags inkjet printed on paper substrates, where tag reading proceeds sequentially through near-field coupling, is presented for the first time. The tags consist of a linear chain of identical split ring resonators (SRRs) printed at predefined and equidistant positions on a paper substrate, and each resonant element provides a bit of information. Tag programming is achieved by cutting certain resonant elements, providing the logic state “0” to the corresponding bit. Conversely, tags can be erased (all bits set to “1”) by short circuiting those previously cut resonant elements through inkjet. An important feature of the proposed system is the fact that tag reading is possible either with the SRR chain faced up or faced down (with regard to the reader). To this end, two pairs of header bits (resonators), with different sequences, have been added at the beginning and at the end of the tag identification chain. Moreover, tag data storage capacity (number of bits) is only limited by the space occupied by the linear chain. The implementation of tags on paper substrates demonstrates the potential of the proposed chipless-RFID system in secure paper applications, where the necessary proximity between the reader and the tag, inherent to near-field reading, is not an issue. A flexible, biological field-effect transistor (BioFET) for use in biosensing is reported. The BioFET is based on an organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) fabricated mainly by inkjet printing and subsequently functionalized with antibodies for protein recognition. The BioFET is assessed for label-free detection of a model protein, human immunoglobulin G (HIgG). It is characterized electrically to evaluate the contribution of each step in the functionalization of the OTFT and to detect the presence of the target protein. The fabrication, structure, materials optimization, electrical characteristics, and functionality of the starting OTFT and final BioFET are also discussed. Different materials are evaluated for the top insulator layer, with the aim of protecting the lower layers from the electrolyte and preserving the BioFET electrical performance. Abstract Rules for geometric design and compensation aim to guarantee that layout representations match final printed patterns within an accepted tolerance for a desired process yield. The more conservative the rules, the better the yield. Therefore, for a given process and after an experimental extraction of the required process parameters, it is possible to derive minimum design rules that characterize the technological process to a point where, without necessarily having an in-depth knowledge of the process and materials involved; design engineers can address physical design in order to develop devices and systems. In this article, a methodology for the extraction and characterization of inkjet geometric design rules and the application of compensation techniques to permit the inkjet manufacturing of reliable and precise designs is proposed as a first step towards separating design from digital fabrication, in a similar way to what has already occurred in silicon microelectronics technology. Inkjet printing is a promising and challenging technique that could potentially revolutionize large area and organic electronics fabrication. Inkjet systems are designed to construct devices and circuits drop by drop, which would lead to a new paradigm in electronics fabrication. However, inkjet technology for Printed Electronics is still under development and several challenges remain. While there is significant progress being made in the development of electronic devices, such as transistors or sensors, there is a lack of work on circuit and system level design. Designing devices and circuits implies a wide knowledge of process aspects, requiring a complex interaction among concepts, tools and processes coming from different science and engineering disciplines. An explicit methodology is needed to separate design from fabrication in a similar way as in silicon design, to design devices and systems without a deep knowledge of process and materials; thus making it possible to open up inkjet technology to a larger community and undergo more rapid design implementations. It is well known that organic thin film transistor (OTFT) parameters can be shifted depending on the geometry of the device. In this work, we present two different transistor geometries, interdigitated and Corbino, which provide differences in the key parameters of devices such as threshold voltage (VT), although they share the same materials and fabrication procedure. Furthermore, it is proven that Corbino geometries are good candidates for saturation-mode current driven devices, as they provide higher ION/IOFF ratios. By taking advantage of these differences, circuit design can be improved and the proposed geometries are, therefore, particularly suited for the implementation of logic gates. This paper presents a time-domain, chipless-RFID system with 80-bit tags inkjet-printed on ordinary DIN A4 paper. The tags, consisting of a linear chain of resonant elements (with as many resonators as the number of identification bits plus header bits), are read sequentially and by proximity (through near-field coupling). To this end, a transmission line, fed by a harmonic (interrogation) signal tuned to the resonance frequency of the tag resonators (or close to it), is used as a reader. Thus, during reader operation, the tag chain is mechanically shifted over the transmission line so that the coupling between the line and the functional resonant elements of the tag chain is favored. Logic states that ‘1’ and ‘0’ are determined by the functionality and non-functionality (resonator detuning), respectively, of the resonant elements of the chain. Through near-field coupling, the transmission coefficient of the line is modulated and, as a result, the output signal is modulated in amplitude (AM), which is the identification code contained in the envelope function. As long as the tags are inkjet-printed on ordinary DIN A4 paper, the cost is minimal. Moreover, such tags can be easily programmed and erased, so that identical tags can be fabricated on a large scale (and programmed at a later stage), further reducing the cost of manufacture. The reported prototype tags, with 80 bits of information plus four header bits, demonstrate the potential of this approach, which is of particular interest to secure paper applications. During the last years, intense pulsed light (IPL) processing has been employed and studied intensively for the drying and sintering of metal nanoparticle layers deposited by means of printing methods on flexible polymer substrates. IPL was found to be a very fast and substrate-gentle approach qualified for the field of flexible and large-area printed electronics, i.e. manufactured via roll-to-roll processing. In this contribution, IPL is used for the fine-patterning of printed silver nanoparticle layers. The patterning is obtained by induced and controlled crack formation in the thin silver layer due to the intense exposure of IPL. The crack formation is controlled by selection of the substrate material, the fine-tuning of the morphology of the silver layer and an application of a dielectric layer on top of the silver layer that acts as a stress concentrator. Careful optimization of the IPL parameters allowed to adjust the lateral width of the crack. This novel approach turned out to be a fast and reproducible high-resolution patterning process for multiple applications, e.g. to pattern the source-drain electrodes for all-inkjet-printed thin-film transistors.

Inkjet printed electronics using thermo-curable liquid inks exhibit particular geometrical characteristics in terms of regularity. This article presents a morphological analysis for inkjet printed multi line intersections that are critical structures for building circuits. We studied thin-film structures of silver conductive ink and printed by inkjet technology. Instability of the ink during printing causes the thickness irregularity of vertex, normally with peaks at these areas. We propose the usage of specific patterns for intersections as thickness regularity compensations. The results show that some patterns help to reduce this instability and improve the thickness regularity of intersections morphology.
