Old landfill leachate is normally rich in colloidal particles, has low organic compound, poor biodegradability and hard to be biologically treated. The suspended particles are generally dispersed, negatively charged and do not settle by gravity due to their instability and repulsion. This paper aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SnCl4 as a positively charged coagulant in treating concentrated colour and suspended solids (SS) from an old leachate sampled at one of the local landfills in Malaysia (Alor Pongsu Landfill Site, Keria Perak), which may also represent other landfills with similar property. The mechanism and the effect of pH, zeta potential (ZP) and particle size of colloids on the reduction of the pollutants were evaluated through standard coagulation and flocculation experiment with ZP measurement. The standard jar test was examined at a pre-determined SnCl4 dosage and varied from pH 3 to pH 12. The raw leachate was found negatively charged throughout pH 3 to pH 12. Adding a positively charged SnCl4 increased the leachate surface charge to close to the point of zero charges (IEP) at pH 8 with −0.4 mV. Generally, as the pH value increase from acidic to basic condition, the raw leachate becomes more negatively charged as at higher pH values It was also found that the pH of the solution correlated with the size of the particles, where 221.3 d.nm was recorded from pH 4 to pH 11 and improved to the largest size 660 d.nm at pH 3. The highest colour and SS performance were observed at optimum pH 8 with reductions of 98.9% and 100%, respectively The reduction of repulsive forces at this pH promoted the collision of particles and thus made the aggregation possible. ZP measurement in is important as it provides an early estimation of the effective pH for the optimum coagulation and flocculation process of landfill leachate contributed by the colloidal particles. Leachate generation is among the main challenging issues that landfill operators must handle. Leachate is created when decomposed materials and rainwater pass through the waste. Leachate carries many harmful pollutants, with high concentrations of BOD, COD, colour, heavy metals, ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), and other organic and inorganic pollutants. Among them, COD, colour, and NH3-N are difficult to be completely eliminated, especially with a single treatment. They should be handled by appropriate treatment facilities before being safely released into the environment. Leachate remediation varies based on its properties, the costs of operation and capital expenditures, as well as the rules and regulations. Up until now, much scientific and engineering attention was given to the development of comprehensive solutions to leachate-related issues. The solutions normally demand a multi-stage treatment, commonly in the form of biological, chemical, and physical sequences. This review paper discussed the use of contemporary techniques to remediate landfill leachate with an emphasis on concentrated COD, colour, and NH3-N levels with low biodegradability that is normally present in old landfill or dumping grounds in developing countries. A semi-aerobic type of landfill design was also discussed, as this concept is potentially sustainable compared to others. Some of the challenges and future prospects were also recommended, especially for the case of Malaysia. Tin tetrachloride (SnCl4) as a coagulant and rubber seed (Hevea brasiliensis) (RS), and polyacrylamide (PAM) as the coagulant aid were investigated in this work to treat matured and stabilised landfill leachate rich in COD and colour. A standard jar test was conducted at different pH values and dosages of coagulant/coagulant aid. When SnCl4 acted as the primary coagulant, the optimum conditions occurred at pH 8 and 10,000 mg/L dosages, with 97.3% and 81% reductions of colour and COD, respectively. Both RS and PAM were not effective when used alone. When RS was used as the coagulant aid, the dosage of SnCl4 was reduced to 8000 mg/L. The colour reduction was maintained at 97.6%, but the COD removal dropped to 43.1%. In comparison, when PAM was supplemented into 6000 mg/L SnCl4, the reduction in colour was maintained at 97.6%, and the COD removal was almost at par when SnCl4 was used alone. The addition of polymers as the coagulant aid helped in improving the sludge properties with a better settling rate (SSR) and larger flocs size. The decline of the SVI value indicates that less amount of sludge will be disposed of after the treatment. In addition, the rise of settling velocity (SSR) will reduce the size of the settling tank used in coagulation-flocculation treatment. Based on the results, it can be concluded that incorporation of coagulant aid into the treatment reduced the primary coagulant dosage without affecting the removal performances of pollutants. Landfill leachate is a highly polluted and generated from water infiltration through solid waste produced domestically and industrially. In this study, a coagulation–flocculation process using a combination of Polyaluminium chloride (PACl) as a coagulant and Dimocarpus longan seed powder (LSP) as coagulant aid was used in treating landfill leachate. LSP has been tested as the main coagulant and as coagulant aid with PACl. As the main coagulant, the optimum dosage and pH for PACl were 5 g/L and 6, respectively, with removal efficiencies of 67.44%, 99.47%, and 98% for COD, SS, and color, respectively. For LSP as the main coagulant, results show that LSP is not effective where the removal efficiencies obtained for COD, SS, and color were 39.40%, 22.20%, and 28.30%, respectively, with the optimum dosage of 2 g/L and pH 4. The maximum removal efficiencies of COD, SS, and color were 69.19%, 99.50%, and 98.80%, respectively, when LSP was used as coagulant aid with PACl. Results show that using LSP as coagulant aid was found to be more effective in the removal of COD, SS, and color with less PACl dosage. The PACl dosage was decreased from 5 to 2.75 g/L when LSP was used as a coagulant aid. Cost estimation for using PACl alone and using LSP as the coagulant aid showed a reduction in the cost of approximately 40% of the cost of using PACl alone. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the toxicity levels of the coagulation and flocculation process on raw and treated leachate using acute toxicity tests. Tin tetrachloride (SnCl 4 ) and the Jatropha curcas (JC) seed were used as coagulant and coagulant aid to remove concentrated suspended solids, SS (534 mg/L), color (19,297 Pt-Co), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (4188 mg/L) in a stabilized landfill leachate. The toxicity effects on local red tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) were investigated, which involved three main steps, namely, acclimatization, range-finding test, and short-term definitive test. The presence of JC seed (0.9 g/L) as a flocculant reduced the dosage of SnCl 4 from 11.1 to 8.5 g/L and exhibited good removals of 99.78%, 98.53%, and 74.29%, respectively, for SS, color, and COD. The toxicity test indicated that only five fish died in the first 12 h for the treated sample compared with seven deaths for untreated leachate. In 96 h, a total of 42 and 31 mortality rates were noted for the raw and treated leachate samples, respectively. The treated sample could reduce the toxicity effects to the tested tilapia fish and is safe to be discharged at appropriate dilution concentrations. This paper reviews the related literature reported in 2019 about various types of wastewaters associated with chemical and allied products. The subjects comprise wastewaters produced from various activities in agricultural, chemical, dye, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Bioflocculant chitosan was used for sludge dewatering and the treatment of water and wastewater, and polishing of sanitary landfill leachate. Alkaline lignin-based flocculants were used to achieve excellent color removal for paper mill sludge.
