Abstract

This work presents the densification of Co-based alloy powders by a spark plasma sintering process. The densification process was carried out at a temperature range of 800 °C to 1100 °C in order to obtain sintered coupons and study their microstructure and mechanical properties. The shrinkage behaviour of the sintered coupons was studied, and an optimal densification temperature was defined. The microstructural analysis showed a reduction in porosity with temperature increment along with the development of a fine microstructure comprised of cobalt-molybdenum-chromium-silicon-based intermetallic laves phases, which are dispersed in a softer cobalt-based alloy matrix. X-diffraction analysis showed that these crystalline phases were well-dispersed, with a lattice parameter corresponding to a hexagonal system. The obtained high Vickers hardness values were attributed to the preservation of a fine microstructure and to the precipitation of Co-Mo phases. Abstract

In this work, the transparent TiO2 photoelectrodes have been synthesized by the sol–gel method and the dip-coating technique, incorporating three rheological agents as porous template – Triton X-100, polivinilpirrolidone (M.W. 10000) and Pluronic F-127 into the TiO2 sol for the application in dye- -sensitized solar cells. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, m-lines and UV–Vis spectroscopy analyses were carried out to examine the chemical composition, structure, morphology, thickness and optical transmittance of the TiO2 photoelectrodes. Impedance spectroscopy was carried out to analyze the cells’ behaviour. An average energy conversion efficiency of 1.04 % was achieved using triton as a modifier of the transparent TiO2 film, obtaining a thickness about 1.21 μm, a crystallite size of about 7 nm in the anatase phase and the porosity of about 53.4 %. Triton proved to be efficient for obtaining transparent and porous semiconductor films, while increasing the photoelectrochemical device’s performance.

Abstract

We report a case of predation on the basket worm Oiketicus sp. (Lepidoptera, Psychidae) by the Streak-backed Oriole (Icterus pustulatus) in the Municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. The bird was photographed, and we describe the prey based on its basket, cephalic capsule, and fragments of thoracic segments. We describe the foraging strategy and provide a list of previously recorded food resources in the diet of I. pustulatus. This is the first documentation of a basket worm being consumed by I. pustulatus, which may be considered omnivorous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The arrival of a new invasive alga, Rugulopteryx okamurae, in the Strait of Gibraltar (SoG) in 2015 marked an unprecedented milestone in the North African and, later, in the European marine ecosystems. Nowadays, it is colonising vast infralittoral areas and significantly modifying some habitats and associated communities of the southern Iberian Peninsula. In recent expeditions, a high amount of free drifted thalli of this alga has been detected in different circalittoral and bathyal habitats of the northern SoG and the Alboran Sea. The present study combines quantitative data of this alga obtained with the use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and a bottom otter trawl. The coverage–entanglement level of the drifted thalli on circalittoral and bathyal benthic invertebrates (e.g., not covering, covering only the basal part, covering one-third of the invertebrate, etc.) was also annotated from picture frames taken in locations with abundant drifted thalli. In underwater images, drifted thalli were mainly detected in circalittoral and bathyal bottoms of the northern SoG and the north-western Alboran Sea, between 50 to ca. 450 m depth. Nevertheless, abundant drifted thalli were also detected in bottom otter trawl samples from circalittoral bottoms of the north-central and north-eastern Alboran Sea. Small benthic organisms (e.g., encrusting sponges, hydrozoans, etc.) generally displayed low coverage–entanglement levels of drifted thalli. Nevertheless, large sessile and colonial benthic organisms with a complex three-dimensional morphology (e.g., gorgonians, colonial scleractinians) reached high levels of R. okamurae thalli entangled in different parts of their colonies. The drifted R. okamurae thalli entangled in these colonial suspension feeding organisms may hinder their feeding capability in the long term, resulting in habitat deterioration in the near future. Abstract

High amylose starch (HAS) exhibits restricted granular swelling, limiting its use in many food applications. In this work, we investigated for the first time the potential of ohmic heating (OH) to enhance the swelling of HAS granules in a very efficient manner in terms of processing times. Specifically, the impact of OH at two voltages (130 and 150 V), two moisture conditions (1:3 and 1:5 w/v), and two final temperatures (160 and 180 °C) on the structural, thermal, pasting, and digestion of HAS (70% amylose, AM) was investigated. The electrical conductivity of native HAS showed a transition at 168 ± 1 °C consistent with the thermal transition at 139–192 °C (DSC) with an enthalpy of 11.39 J/g. Furthermore, OH caused a reduction of resistant starch (RS) from 52.0 to 34.5%, and a significant increase in granular swelling (as represented by the increased initial, maximum, and final viscosities). The above was further corroborated by SEM micrographs, which showed the disruption of the granular structure that aligned with a decrease in the relative crystallinity and shift to a B-type polymorphism. Results showed that the high temperatures reached during ohmic heating result in partial HAS gelatinization and enhanced granular swelling.

Abstract

In this work, the microwave synthesis of Nylon‐6 hybrid polymeric nanocomposite (HPNC) was studied by the polymerization of ε‐caprolactam, 6‐aminocaproic acid, and 2% wt of silver nanoparticles (Ag‐NPs). It was determined that the dielectric heating (DH) of the Ag‐NPs controls the thermal behavior of the HPNCs synthesis and triggers the chemical reaction between Ag‐NPs and the Nylon‐6 molecules. Such reaction promotes their coating with the polymer and their precipitation, which affects the agitation of the reaction mixture, and results in broader molecular weight distribution and three HPNC populations. Usually, the power output effect in these processes is thermal as it accelerates their heating rate. Still, for HPNCs, higher output reduces the agglomerate size of the Ag‐NPs and accelerates their precipitation. At power up to 600 W, the DH of the Ag‐NPs causes the explosion of the reaction vials. The antimicrobial activity of the HPNCs against P. aeruginosa is almost 100% effective at 180 min of exposure; therefore, this microwave synthesis process is suitable for producing antimicrobial HPNCs. Abstract

Eu3+-(5% mol)-doped Lu2SiO5 optical quality films were prepared using the sol–gel method and dip-coating technique from lutetium and europium salts as the lanthanide precursors and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silicon source. To increase the thickness of the films, 3-Glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (Glymo) was added as the rheological agent during sol formation. Structural, morphological, and luminescent properties were investigated for Lu2SiO5, Eu3+:Lu2SiO5, and Eu3+:Lu2SiO5/Glymo in order to obtain high quality in luminescent films. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that the incorporation of the Eu3+ ions do not affect the A-Type and B-Type monoclinic crystalline phase typical of Lu2SiO5, even after five dipping cycles on quartz substrates and a final annealing process at 1100 °C. The morphology and topography of the films were studied by SEM and AFM. These techniques revealed films without surfactant that were uniform with low rugosity while the film with surfactant presented porous hills and valleys with uneven high values of roughness. The photoluminescence spectrum of Eu3+:Lu2SiO5 films showed 2 broad emission peaks centered at 589 nm and 612 nm. The presence of Glymo in the system promoted the formation of residual Lu2Si2O7 compounds with the highest lifetime values compared with films without surfactant.
