Graphene moiré superlattices display electronic flat bands. At integer fillings of these flat bands, energy gaps due to strong electron–electron interactions are generally observed. However, the presence of other correlation-driven phases in twisted graphitic systems at non-integer fillings is unclear. Here, we report the existence of three-fold rotational (C3) symmetry breaking in twisted double bilayer graphene. Using spectroscopic imaging over large and uniform areas to characterize the direction and degree of C3 symmetry breaking, we find it to be prominent only at energies corresponding to the flat bands and nearly absent in the remote bands. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the rotational symmetry breaking does not depend on the degree of the heterostrain or the displacement field, being instead a manifestation of an interaction-driven electronic nematic phase. We show that the nematic phase is a primary order that arises from the normal metal state over a wide range of doping away from charge neutrality. Superconductivity is a remarkably widespread phenomenon that is observed in most metals cooled to very low temperatures. The ubiquity of such conventional superconductors, and the wide range of associated critical temperatures, is readily understood in terms of the well-known Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory. Occasionally, however, unconventional superconductors are found, such as the iron-based materials, which extend and defy this understanding in unexpected ways. In the case of the iron-based superconductors, this includes the different ways in which the presence of multiple atomic orbitals can manifest in unconventional superconductivity, giving rise to a rich landscape of gap structures that share the same dominant pairing mechanism. In addition, these materials have also led to insights into the unusual metallic state governed by the Hund’s interaction, the control and mechanisms of electronic nematicity, the impact of magnetic fluctuations and quantum criticality, and the importance of topology in correlated states. Over the fourteen years since their discovery, iron-based superconductors have proven to be a testing ground for the development of novel experimental tools and theoretical approaches, both of which have extensively influenced the wider field of quantum materials.

Electronic nematicity is rarely observed as an isolated instability of a correlated electron system. Instead, in iron pnictides and in certain cuprates and heavy-fermion materials, nematicity is intertwined with an underlying spin-stripe or charge-stripe state. As a result, random strain, ubiquitous in any real crystal, creates both random-field disorder for the nematic degrees of freedom and random-bond disorder for the spin or charge ones. Here, we put forward an Ashkin-Teller model with random Baxter fields to capture the dual role of random strain in nematic systems for which nematicity is a composite order arising from a stripe state. Using Monte Carlo to simulate this $\textit{random Baxter-field model}$, we find not only the expected break-up of the system into nematic domains, but also the emergence of nontrivial disorder-promoted magnetic correlations. Such correlations enhance and tie up the fluctuations associated with the two degenerate magnetic stripe states from which nematicity arises, leaving characteristic signatures in the spatial profile of the magnetic domains, in the configurational space of the spin variables, and in the magnetic noise spectrum. We discuss possible experimental manifestations of these effects in iron-pnictide superconductors. Due to the intertwining between electronic nematic and elastic degrees of freedom, lattice defects and structural inhomogeneities commonly found in crystals can have a significant impact on the electronic properties of nematic materials. Here, we show that defects commonly present at the surface of crystals generally shift the wave-vector of the nematic instability to a non-zero value, resulting in an incommensurate electronic smectic phase. Such a smectic state onsets above the bulk nematic transition temperature and is localized near the surface of the sample. We argue that this effect may explain not only recent observations of a modulated nematic phase in iron-based superconductors, but also several previous puzzling experiments that reported signatures consistent with nematic order before the onset of a bulk structural distortion., 16 pages, 12 figures

We formulate a fracton-elasticity duality for twisted moir\'e superlattices, taking into account that they are incommensurate crystals with dissipative phason dynamics. From a dual tensor-gauge formulation, as compared to standard crystals, we identify twice the number of conserved charges that describe topological lattice defects, namely, disclinations and a new type of defect that we dub discompressions. The key implication of these conservation laws is that both glide and climb motions of lattice dislocations are suppressed, indicating that dislocation networks may become exceptionally stable. We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multi-component order parameter in lattices with three-fold and six-fold rotational symmetries support a charge-$4e$ vestigial superconducting phase above $T_c$. The charge-$4e$ state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is non-superconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities in the gauge sector and in the crystalline sector of the symmetry group. We argue that random strain generally favors the charge-$4e$ state over the nematic phase, as it acts as a random-mass to the former but as a random-field to the latter. Thus, we propose that two-dimensional inhomogeneous systems displaying nematic superconductivity, such as twisted bilayer graphene, provide a promising platform to realize the elusive charge-$4e$ superconducting phase., 5 pages plus Supplementary Material

The properties of quantum materials are commonly tuned using experimental variables such as pressure, magnetic field and doping. Here we explore a different approach using irreversible, plastic deformation of single crystals. We show that compressive plastic deformation induces low-dimensional superconductivity well above the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of undeformed SrTiO3, with evidence of possible superconducting correlations at temperatures two orders of magnitude above the bulk Tc. The enhanced superconductivity is correlated with the appearance of self-organized dislocation structures, as revealed by diffuse neutron and X-ray scattering. We also observe deformation-induced signatures of quantum-critical ferroelectric fluctuations and inhomogeneous ferroelectric order using Raman scattering. Our results suggest that strain surrounding the self-organized dislocation structures induces local ferroelectricity and quantum-critical dynamics that strongly influence Tc, consistent with a theory of superconductivity enhanced by soft polar fluctuations. Our results demonstrate the potential of plastic deformation and dislocation engineering for the manipulation of electronic properties of quantum materials. Plastic deformation is shown to tune the quantum degrees of freedom in SrTiO3.

UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered unconventional superconductor that has attracted much interest due to its many intriguing properties - a large residual density-of-states in the superconducting state, re-entrant superconductivity in high magnetic fields, and potentially spin-triplet topological superconductivity. Our ac calorimetry, electrical resistivity, and x-ray absorption study of UTe$_2$ under applied pressure reveals key new insights on the superconducting and magnetic states surrounding pressure-induced quantum criticality at P$_{c1}$ = 1.3 GPa. First, our specific heat data at low pressures, combined with a phenomenological model, show that pressure alters the balance between two closely competing superconducting orders. Second, near 1.5 GPa we detect two bulk transitions that trigger changes in the resistivity which are consistent with antiferromagnetic order, rather than ferromagnetism. The presence of both bulk magnetism and superconductivity at pressures above P$_{c2}$ = 1.4 GPa results in a significant temperature difference between resistively and thermodynamically determined transitions into the superconducting state, which indicates a suppression of the superconducting volume fraction by magnetic order. Third, the emergence of magnetism is accompanied by an increase in valence towards a U$^{4+}$ (5f2) state, which indicates that UTe$_2$ exhibits intermediate valence at ambient pressure. Electronic nematic behavior has been identified and studied in iron-based superconductors for some time, particularly in the well-known BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system, where it is well-known to compete with superconductivity. On the other hand, it has been shown recently that FeSe displays a negligible effect of nematicity on superconductivity near the superconducting transition, and actual cooperation between the two orders when the system is doped with S. Recently it has also been proposed that LiFeAs undergoes a nematic transition in the superconducting state itself. Generally, we expect superconductivity to be anisotropic when it coexists with nematic order, but it is not clear under what circumstances the two orders compete or cooperate, nor how the anisotropy of the superconducting state correlates with that in the nematic state. To address this, we study a simple mean field model of a $d$-wave Pomeranchuk instability together with a mixed $s,d$ pairing interaction, and identify when nematicity is enhanced or suppressed by superconductivity. We show that the competition or cooperation depends significantly on the distortion of the Fermi surface due to nematicity relative to the anisotropy of the superconducting gap function. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) provides a unique framework to elucidate the interplay between strong correlations and topological phenomena in two-dimensional systems. The existence of multiple electronic degrees of freedom -- charge, spin, and valley -- gives rise to a plethora of possible ordered states and instabilities. Identifying which of them are realized in the regime of strong correlations is fundamental to shed light on the nature of the superconducting and correlated insulating states observed in the TBG experiments. Here, we use unbiased, sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations to solve an effective interacting lattice model for TBG at charge neutrality. Besides the usual cluster Hubbard-like repulsion, this model also contains an assisted hopping interaction that emerges due to the non-trivial topological properties of TBG. Such a non-local interaction fundamentally alters the phase diagram at charge neutrality, gapping the Dirac cones even for infinitesimally small interaction. As the interaction strength increases, a sequence of different correlated insulating phases emerge, including a quantum valley Hall state with topological edge states, an intervalley-coherent insulator, and a valence bond solid. The charge-neutrality correlated insulating phases discovered here provide the sought-after reference states needed for a comprehensive understanding of the insulating states at integer fillings and the proximate superconducting states of TBG., 15 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The search for fractionalization in quantum spin liquids largely relies on their decoupling with the environment. However, the spin-lattice interaction is inevitable in a real setting. While the Majorana fermion evades a strong decay due to the gradient form of spin-lattice coupling, the study of the phonon dynamics may serve as an indirect probe of fractionalization of spin degrees of freedom. Here we propose that the signatures of fractionalization can be seen in the sound attenuation and the Hall viscosity. Despite the fact that both quantities can be related to the imaginary part of the phonon self-energy, their origins are quite different, and the time-reversal symmetry breaking is required for the Hall viscosity. First, we compute the sound attenuation due to a phonon scattering off of a pair of Majorana fermions and show that it is linear in temperature ($\sim T$). We argue that it has a particular angular dependence providing the information about the spin-lattice coupling and the low-energy Majorana fermion spectrum. The observable effects in the absence of time-reversal symmetry are then analyzed. We obtain the phonon Hall viscosity term from the microscopic Hamiltonian with time-reversal symmetry breaking term. Importantly, the Hall viscosity term mixes the longitudinal and transverse phonon modes and renormalize the spectrum in a unique way, which may be probed in spectroscopy measurement., published version

Motivated by the experimental observation that superconductivity in bulk doped SrTiO$_{3}$ is enhanced as a putative ferroelectric quantum critical point (FE-QCP) is approached, we study the pairing instability of a cubic system in which electrons exchange low-energy ferroelectric fluctuations. Instead of the gradient coupling to the lattice distortion associated with ferroelectricity, we consider a direct coupling between the electrons and the bosonic ferroelectric field that appears in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Working in the weak-coupling regime, we find that the pairing interaction is dominated by the soft transverse optical (TO) mode, resulting in a $T_{c}$ enhancement upon approaching the FE-QCP. Focusing on even-parity states, we find that although the $s$-wave state always wins, states with higher Cooper-pair angular momentum become close competitors as the TO mode softens. We show that the cubic anisotropy of the FE fluctuations mixes the $s$-wave and $g$-wave states, resulting in a characteristic anisotropy of the gap function. The gap anisotropy behaves non-monotonically as the FE-QCP is approached: upon decreasing the TO mode frequency, the gap anisotropy first changes sign and then increases in magnitude. The iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a rich phase diagram reflecting a complex interplay between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom [1-4]. The nematic state observed in many of these compounds epitomizes this complexity, by entangling a real-space anisotropy in the spin fluctuation spectrum with ferro-orbital order and an orthorhombic lattice distortion [5-7]. A more subtle and much less explored facet of the interplay between these degrees of freedom arises from the sizable spin-orbit coupling present in these systems, which translates anisotropies in real space into anisotropies in spin space. Here, we present a new technique enabling nuclear magnetic resonance under precise tunable strain control, which reveals that upon application of a tetragonal symmetry-breaking strain field, the magnetic fluctuation spectrum in the paramagnetic phase of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ also acquires an anisotropic response in spin-space. Our results unveil a hitherto uncharted internal spin structure of the nematic order parameter, indicating that similar to liquid crystals, electronic nematic materials may offer a novel route to magneto-mechanical control., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Magnetism is widely considered to be a key ingredient of unconventional superconductivity. In contrast to cuprate high-temperature superconductors, antiferromagnetism in Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) is characterized by a pair of magnetic propagation vectors. Consequently, three different types of magnetic order are possible. Of theses, only stripe-type spin-density wave (SSDW) and spin-charge-density wave (SCDW) orders have been observed. A realization of the proposed spin-vortex crystal (SVC) order is noticeably absent. We report a magnetic phase consistent with the hedgehog variation of SVC order in Ni- and Co-doped CaKFe4As4 based on thermodynamic, transport, structural and local magnetic probes combined with symmetry analysis. The exotic SVC phase is stabilized by the reduced symmetry of the CaKFe4As4 structure. Our results suggest that the possible magnetic ground states in FeSCs have very similar energies, providing an enlarged configuration space for magnetic fluctuations to promote high-temperature superconductivity., Comment: Updated version including supplemental material

Motivated by recent reports of nematic order in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we investigate the impact of the triangular moir\'e superlattice degrees of freedom on nematicity. In TBG, the nematic order parameter is not Ising-like, as it is the case in tetragonal crystals, but has a 3-state Potts character related to the threefold rotational symmetry ($C_{3z}$) of the moir\'e superlattice. We find that even in the presence of static strain that explicitly breaks the $C_{3z}$ symmetry, the system can still undergo a nematic-flop phase transition that spontaneously breaks in-plane twofold rotations. Moreover, elastic fluctuations, manifested as acoustic phonons, mediate a nemato-orbital coupling that ties the orientation of the nematic director to certain soft directions in momentum space, rendering the Potts-nematic transition mean-field and first-order. In contrast to the case of rigid crystals, the Fermi-surface hot-spots associated with these soft directions are maximally coupled to the low-energy nematic fluctuations in the case of the moir\'e superlattice., Comment: main text plus supplementary material

We consider the electronic spectrum near $M=(\pi,\pi)$ in the nematic phase of FeSe ($TT_{{\rm nem}}$, in apparent contradiction to the fact that in the tetragonal phase the $xz$ and $yz$ orbitals are degenerate. Here we present two scenarios which can describe the data. In both scenarios, hybridization terms present in the tetragonal phase leads to an orbital transmutation, a change in the dominant orbital character of some of the bands, between $T > T_{\rm nem}$ and $T \ll T_{\rm nem}$. The first scenario relies on the spin-orbit coupling at the $M$ point. We show that a finite spin-orbit coupling gives rise to orbital transmutation, in which one of the modes, identified as $xz$ ($yz)$ at $T \ll T_{{\rm nem}}$, becomes predominantly $xy$ at $T > T_{{\rm nem}}$ and hence does not merge with the predominantly $yz$ ($xz$) mode. The second scenario, complementary to the first, takes into consideration the fact that both ARPES and STM are surface probes. In the bulk, a direct hybridization between the $xz$ and $yz$ orbitals is not allowed at the $M$ point, however, it is permitted on the surface. In the presence of a direct $xz/yz$ hybridization, the orbital character of the $xz/yz$ modes changes from pure $xz$ and pure $yz$ at $T \ll T_{{\rm nem}}$ to $xz \pm yz$ at $T > T_{{\rm nem}}$, i.e., the two modes again have mono-orbital character at low $T$, but do not merge at $T_{{\rm nem}}$. Motivated by the observation of superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$ and Bi, we analyze phonon-mediated superconductivity in three-dimensional systems at low carrier density, when the chemical potential $\mu$ (equal to Fermi energy at $T=0$) is comparable to or even smaller than the characteristic phonon frequency $\omega_L$. We consider the attractive part of the Bardeen-Pines pairing interaction, in which the frequency-dependent electron-phonon interaction is dressed by the Coulomb potential. This dressing endows the pairing interaction with momentum dependence. We argue that the conventional Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) approximation becomes invalid when $\mu \leq \omega_L$ chiefly because the dominant contribution to pairing comes from electronic states away from the Fermi surface. We obtain the pairing onset temperature, which is equal to $T_c$ in the absence of phase fluctuations, as a function of $\mu/\omega_L$. We find both analytically and numerically that $T_c$ increases as the ratio $\mu/\omega_L$ becomes smaller. In particular, in the dilute regime, $\mu \rightarrow 0$, it holds that $T_c\propto\omega_L\left(\frac{Ry}{\omega_L}\right)^\eta$, where $\text{Ry}$ is the Rydberg constant and $\eta \sim 0.2$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Motivated by recent experiments reporting superconductivity only at very low temperature in a class of heavy fermion compounds, we study the impact of energy fluctuations with small momentum transfer on the pairing instability near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. While these fluctuations, formed by composite spin fluctuations, were proposed to explain the thermodynamic and transport properties near the quantum critical point of compounds such as YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ at $x\approx0.1$, here they are found to strongly suppress $T_{c}$ of the $d$-wave pairing of the hot quasiparticles promoted by the spin fluctuations. Interestingly, if energy fluctuations are strong enough, they can induce triplet pairing involving the quasiparticles of the cold regions of the Fermi surface. Overall, the opposing effects of energy and spin fluctuations lead to a suppression of $T_{c}$., 7 pages, 4 figures

The recent observation of superconductivity in proximity to an insulating phase in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at small `magic' twist angles has been linked to the existence of nearly-flat bands, which make TBG a fresh playground to investigate the interplay between correlations and superconductivity. The low-energy narrow bands were shown to be well-described by an effective tight-binding model on the honeycomb lattice (the dual of the triangular Moir\'e superlattice) with a local orbital degree of freedom. In this paper, we perform a strong-coupling analysis of the proposed $\left(p_{x},\,p_{y}\right)$ two-orbital extended Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. By decomposing the interacting terms in the particle-particle and particle-hole channels, we classify the different possible superconducting, magnetic, and charge instabilities of the system. In the pairing case, we pay particular attention to the two-component ($d$-wave) pairing channels, which admit vestigial phases with nematic or chiral orders, and study their phenomenology. Furthermore, we explore the strong-regime by obtaining a simplified spin-orbital exchange model which may describe a putative Mott-like insulating state at quarter-filling. Our mean-field solution reveals a rich intertwinement between ferro- and antiferro-magnetic orders with different types of nematic and magnetic orbital orders. Overall, our work provides a solid framework for further investigations of the phase diagram of the two-orbital extended Hubbard model in both strong- and weak-coupling regimes., Comment: 14+6 pages; 5 figures; v2 typesetting error corrected

Magnetism induced by external pressure ($p$) was studied in a FeSe crystal sample by means of muon-spin rotation. The magnetic transition changes from second-order to first-order for pressures exceeding the critical value $p_{{\rm c}}\simeq2.4-2.5$ GPa. The magnetic ordering temperature ($T_{{\rm N}}$) and the value of the magnetic moment per Fe site ($m_{{\rm Fe}}$) increase continuously with increasing pressure, reaching $T_{{\rm N}}\simeq50$~K and $m_{{\rm Fe}}\simeq0.25$ $\mu_{{\rm B}}$ at $p\simeq2.6$ GPa, respectively. No pronounced features at both $T_{{\rm N}}(p)$ and $m_{{\rm Fe}}(p)$ are detected at $p\simeq p_{{\rm c}}$, thus suggesting that the stripe-type magnetic order in FeSe remains unchanged above and below the critical pressure $p_{{\rm c}}$. A phenomenological model for the $(p,T)$ phase diagram of FeSe reveals that these observations are consistent with a scenario where the nematic transitions of FeSe at low and high pressures are driven by different mechanisms., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figyres

Bulk FeSe is a special iron-based material in which superconductivity emerges inside a well-developed nematic phase. We present a microscopic model for this nematic superconducting state, which takes into account the mixing between $s-$wave and $d-$wave pairing channels and the changes in the orbital spectral weight promoted by the sign-changing nematic order parameter. We show that nematicity gives rise to a $\cos2\theta$ variation of the pairing gap on the hole pocket that agrees with ARPES and STM data for experimentally-extracted Fermi surface parameters. We further argue that, in BCS theory, $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals give nearly equal contributions to the pairing glue, i.e. nematic order alone accounts for the gap anisotropy, but has little effect on $T_{c}$. This result questions the validity of the concept of orbital-selective pairing. Self-energy corrections, however, make $d_{xz}$ orbital more incoherent and reduce its contribution to pairing., Comment: 5pp, 3 figs, plus supplementary material, replaced with a published version

The paradigmatic example of a continuous quantum phase transition is the transverse field Ising ferromagnet. In contrast to classical critical systems, whose properties depend only on symmetry and the dimension of space, the nature of a quantum phase transition also depends on the dynamics. In the transverse field Ising model, the order parameter is not conserved, and increasing the transverse field enhances quantum fluctuations until they become strong enough to restore the symmetry of the ground state. Ising pseudospins can represent the order parameter of any system with a twofold degenerate broken-symmetry phase, including electronic nematic order associated with spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking. Here, we show for the representative example of orbital-nematic ordering of a non-Kramers doublet that an orthogonal strain or a perpendicular magnetic field plays the role of the transverse field, thereby providing a practical route for tuning appropriate materials to a quantum critical point. While the transverse fields are conjugate to seemingly unrelated order parameters, their nontrivial commutation relations with the nematic order parameter, which can be represented by a Berry-phase term in an effective field theory, intrinsically intertwine the different order parameters.

Significance Discovering new interdependences among magnetism, unconventional superconductivity and quantum criticality presents new insights into how electronic matter can organize itself into unexpected quantum states but also poses a fundamental challenge to current understanding. Here, we show that two qualitatively different types of magnetic order develop inside the pressure-induced superconducting state of Ce 0.95 Nd 0.05 RhIn 5 . Field-induced magnetic order, derived from Cerium’s 4 f electrons, competes with zero-field, spin-density order that forms by condensation of magnetic excitations in a spin resonance. The zero-field magnetism is tuned to quantum-critical points by pressure and magnetic field. These discoveries portend possibilities for new quantum states arising from magnetic orders and quantum criticality in other unconventional superconductors that host a spin resonance.

The close interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in several quantum materials can lead to the appearance of an unusual thermodynamic state in which both orders coexist microscopically, despite their competing nature. A hallmark of this coexistence state is the emergence of a spin-triplet superconducting gap component, called $\pi$-triplet, which is spatially modulated by the antiferromagnetic wave-vector, reminiscent of a pair-density wave. In this paper, we investigate the impact of these $\pi$-triplet degrees of freedom on the phase diagram of a system with competing antiferromagnetic and superconducting orders. Although we focus on a microscopic two-band model that has been widely employed in studies of iron pnictides, most of our results follow from a Ginzburg-Landau analysis, and as such should be applicable to other systems of interest, such as cuprates and heavy fermions. The Ginzburg-Landau functional reveals not only that the $\pi$-triplet gap amplitude couples tri-linearly with the singlet gap amplitude and the staggered magnetization magnitude, but also that the $\pi$-triplet $d$-vector couples linearly with the magnetization direction. While in the mean field level this coupling forces the $d$-vector to align parallel or anti-parallel to the magnetization, in the fluctuation regime it promotes two additional collective modes - a Goldstone mode related to the precession of the $d$-vector around the magnetization and a massive mode, related to the relative angle between the two vectors, which is nearly degenerate with a Leggett-like mode associated with the phase difference between the singlet and triplet gaps. Magnetism and nematic order are the two non-superconducting orders observed in iron-based superconductors. To elucidate the interplay between them and ultimately unveil the pairing mechanism, several models have been investigated. In models with quenched orbital degrees of freedom, magnetic fluctuations promote stripe magnetism which induces orbital order. In models with quenched spin degrees of freedom, charge fluctuations promote spontaneous orbital order which induces stripe magnetism. Here we develop an unbiased approach, in which we treat magnetic and orbital fluctuations on equal footing. Key to our approach is the inclusion of the orbital character of the low-energy electronic states into renormalization group analysis. Our results show that in systems with large Fermi energies, such as BaFe2As2, LaFeAsO, and NaFeAs, orbital order is induced by stripe magnetism. However, in systems with small Fermi energies, such as FeSe, the system develops a spontaneous orbital order, while magnetic order does not develop. To shed light on the mechanism responsible for the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in the nematic phase of the iron-based superconductors, we investigate the impact of spin fluctuations on the anisotropic AC conductivity. On the one hand, the scattering of electrons off magnetic fluctuations causes an anisotropic scattering rate. On the other hand, the accompanying Fermi velocity renormalization contributes to both the plasma frequency and the scattering rate in antagonistic ways, giving rise to anisotropies in these quantities that exactly cancel each other in the DC limit. As a result, the effective scattering rate changes its sign as function of temperature, but the DC conductivity retains the same sign, in agreement with recent experiments., 6 pages, 5 pictures

The in-plane resistivity anisotropy is studied in strain-detwinned single crystals of FeSe. In contrast to other iron-based superconductors, FeSe does not develop long-range magnetic order below the nematic/structural transition at $T_{s}\approx$90~K. This allows for the disentanglement of the contributions to the resistivity anisotropy due to nematic and magnetic orders. Comparing direct transport and elastoresistivity measurements, we extract the intrinsic resistivity anisotropy of strain-free samples. The anisotropy peaks slightly below $T_{s}$ and decreases to nearly zero on cooling down to the superconducting transition. This behavior is consistent with a scenario in which the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in FeSe is dominated by inelastic scattering by anisotropic spin fluctuations.

Recent experiments have unveiled important properties of the ground state of the elusive heavy fermion $\mathrm{URu_{2}Si_{2}}$. In the iron pnictides and chalcogenides, multiple orbitals participate in the superconducting state, enabling different gap structures to be realized in distinct materials. Here we argue that the spectral weights of these orbitals can in principle be controlled by a tetragonal symmetry-breaking uniaxial strain, due to the enhanced nematic susceptibility of many iron-based superconductors. By investigating multi-orbital microscopic models in the presence of orbital order, we show that not only $T_{c}$ can be enhanced, but pairs of accidental gap nodes can be annihilated and created in the Fermi surface by an increasing external strain. We explain our results as a mixture of nearly-degenerate superconducting states promoted by strain, and show that the annihilation and creation of nodes can be detected experimentally via anisotropic penetration depth measurements. We report Raman scattering measurement of charge nematic fluctuations in the tetragonal phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.04) single crystals. In both systems, the observed nematic fluctuations are found to exhibit divergent Curie-Weiss like behavior with very similar characteristic temperature scales, indicating a universal tendency towards charge nematic order in 122 iron-based superconductors., 6 pages, 3 figures, SCES2013 proceedings

We investigate the fate of the orthorhombic stripe-type magnetic state (ordering vectors $\left(\pi,0\right)$/$\left(0,\pi\right)$), observed in most iron-pnictide superconductors, in the presence of localized magnetic moments that tend to form a Neel state (ordering vector $\left(\pi,\pi\right)$). We show that before long-range Neel order sets in, the coupling between the conduction electrons and the fluctuations of the local moments favors an unusual magnetic state consisting of a coherent superposition of the $\left(\pi,0\right)$ and $\left(0,\pi\right)$ orders that preserves tetragonal symmetry. The magnetization of this state is non-uniform and induces a simultaneous checkerboard charge order. We discuss signatures of this magnetic configuration on the electronic spectrum and its impact on the superconducting state, showing that its phase space for coexistence with the $s^{+-}$ state is smaller than the stripe-type state. Recent experiments on two iron-pnictide families suggest the existence of a single quantum phase transition (QPT) inside the superconducting dome despite the fact that two separate transition lines - magnetic and nematic - cross the superconducting dome at $T_{c}$. Here we argue that these two observations are actually consistent. We show, using a microscopic model, that each order coexists with superconductivity for a wide range of parameters, and both transition lines continue into the superconducting dome below $T_{c}$. We investigate how emergent nematic order and nematic fluctuations affect several macroscopic properties of both the normal and superconducting states of the iron pnictides. Due to its magnetic origin, long-range nematic order enhances magnetic fluctuations, leaving distinctive signatures in the spin-lattice relaxation rate, the spin-spin correlation function, and the uniform magnetic susceptibility. This enhancement of magnetic excitations is also manifested in the electronic spectral function, where a pseudogap can open at the hot spots of the Fermi surface. In the nematic phase, electrons are scattered by magnetic fluctuations that are anisotropic in momentum space, giving rise to a non-zero resistivity anisotropy whose sign changes between electron-doped and hole-doped compounds. We also show that due to the magneto-elastic coupling, nematic fluctuations soften the shear modulus in the normal state, but harden it in the superconducting state. The latter effect is an indirect consequence of the competition between magnetism and superconductivity, and also causes a suppression of the orthorhombic distortion below T_{c}. We also demonstrate that ferro-orbital fluctuations enhance the nematic susceptibility, cooperatively promoting an electronic tetragonal symmetry-breaking. Starting from a microscopic itinerant model, we derive and analyze the effective low-energy model for collective magnetic excitations in the iron pnictides. We show that the stripe magnetic order is generally preempted by an Ising-nematic order which breaks $C_{4}$ lattice symmetry but preserves O(3) spin-rotational symmetry. This leads to a rich phase diagram as function of doping, pressure, and elastic moduli, displaying split magnetic and nematic tri-critical points. The nematic transition may instantly bring the system to the verge of a magnetic transition, or it may occur first, being followed by a magnetic transition at a lower temperature. In the latter case, the preemptive nematic transition is accompanied by either a jump or a rapid increase of the magnetic correlation length, triggering a pseudogap behavior associated with magnetic precursors. Furthermore, due to the distinct orbital character of each Fermi pocket, the nematic transition also induces orbital order. We compare our results to various experiments, showing that they correctly address the changes in the character of the magneto-structural transition across the phase diagrams of different compounds, as well as the relationship between the orthorhombic and magnetic order parameters., revised version with two new figs and a few refs added; 35 pages

We show that the interference between scattering by impurities and by critical spin fluctuations gives rise to anisotropic transport in the Ising-nematic state of the iron pnictides. The effect is closely related to the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Our theory not only explains the observed sign of the resistivity anisotropy $\Delta\rho$ in electron doped systems, but also predicts a sign change of $\Delta\rho$ upon sufficient hole doping. We show that, in antiferromagnetic superconductors, the optical spectral weight transferred to low frequencies below the superconducting transition temperature originates from energies that can be much larger than twice the superconducting gap $\Delta$. This contrasts to non-magnetic superconductors, where the optical spectrum is suppressed only for frequencies below $2\Delta$. In particular, we demonstrate that the superfluid condensate of the magnetically ordered superconductor is not only due to states of the magnetically reconstructed Fermi surface, but is enhanced by transfer of spectral weight from the mid infrared peak generated by the spin density wave gap.
