The Southern Research Institute and APTECH CST has recently pilot tested a technology for sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide control in coal-fired power plant combustion to reduce emissions. Details on injection technologies for coal combustion are discussed.

Abstract

The article presents information on various technologies for the control of emissions in the energy industry. A technology patented by Aptech Engineering Services Inc., would help owner/operators of smaller, older coal-fired plants comply with emissions limits with little expense. A heat-recovery steam generator (HRSG) design used by Alstom Power NV would reduce the cost of the unit and the problems due to thermal gradients. Toronto's Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) system , operated by Enwave Energy, provides district heating and/or cooling services to more than 140 institutional and commercial buildings in downtown Toronto.

Abstract

The article reports on the efficacy of Aptech's Clean Stack Technologies (CST) in preventing slagging in the upper furnace and convective pass among power plants. CST is specifically intended to meet the demand of power plants for a technology that assures emission control, cost effective and operating cost reductions. Specific objectives include reduction of sulfur dioxide by more than 70%, nitrogen oxide removal, and hydrochloric acid reduction. Moreover, it also aims to offer increased fuel flexibility and assure cost efficacy to show power plant operators a greater chance to continue their operation despite economic recessions.
