The response of fish assemblages to changes in protection status is a major issue for both biodiversity conservation and fishery management. In New Caledonia, the Aboré reef marine reserve harbours more than 500 fish species, and has been subjected to changes in protection status since 1988. The present study investigates the impact of these changes on a wide subset of species (213), based on underwater visual counts collected before the opening and after the closure to fishing of this marine protected area (MPA). We analysed the spatial and temporal variability in fish assemblage attributable to protection status, explicitly considering habitat. To understand the successive responses of fish assemblage to fishing and protection, the assessment models included four criteria defining species groups that partition the fish assemblage: trophic regime, adult size, mobility, and interest for fishing. We could therefore identify the negative impact of opening the MPA to fishing on piscivores and highly mobile species. Surprisingly, target species were not affected more than non-target species. Model results were used to identify species groups that respond to fishing and protection. These results utilize fisheries-related criteria to provide new insight into the response of fish assemblages to protection from the perspective of MPA monitoring.

Cette étude évalue le potentiel d’exploitation des poissons démersaux récifo-lagonaires d’intérêt commercial dans les lagons de la Province Nord de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. La pression de pêche est estimée d’après les relevés des pêcheurs professionnels et le budget de consommation des ménages. Les captures totales ont été estimées à 1 326 tonnes en 1995, dont 94 % sont représentés par la pêche de poissons consommés sur place. Les captures sont effectuées sur les côtes ouest et est, et sont très faibles dans le lagon nord (Bélep). Compte tenu de cette pression de pêche d’une part, et des stocks d’autre part, la prise maximale soutenue annuelle a été estimée à 12 600 t, soit environ 10 % du stock total (138 300 t). Elle est principalement constituée par des espèces de cinq familles : les Lethrinidés, Acanthuridés, Scaridés, Serranidés et Lutjanidés. Comparés à la pression de pêche sur l’ensemble des lagons, les stocks semblent loin d’être menacés dans leur ensemble. Il serait donc possible d’augmenter sensiblement l’effort de pêche. Cependant, à une échelle géographique plus fine, certains secteurs communaux (Koné et Népoui sur la côte ouest), certains biotopes récifaux (les abords récifaux), ou certains groupes d’espèces (poissons de ligne) semblent supporter déjà une activité conséquente. Des recommandations sont formulées, notamment la mise en place d’un suivi de la ressource des espèces cibles et la réorientation de l’effort de pêche en direction d’autres groupes d’espèces et d’autres biotopes grâce à une diversification des techniques de captures.

Since long time ago, the small pelagics are exploited along the north coast of Java Island by two fisheries, one which exploit coastal species, and the other one which exploit mainly the scads (#Decapterus spp.$). Until the seventies, these fish were caught with Danish seines ("Payang") carried by large canoes ("Mayang"). Due to the vessels and the fishing gear used, the fishing season was short and the fishing grounds were located not far from the shore. In 1970's, the introduction of a new net and new type of vessel allowed the extension of the fishing season and of the fishing grounds. The landings show a high seasonality related to the monsoon, phenomenon which seems common to many pelagic fisheries in the Asian region. (Résumé d'auteur)

Ce document synthétise les principales caractéristiques des pêcheries artisanales du Sénégal qui visent les deux espèces de Sardinelles, selon les engins. Les éléments du cycle vital des deux espèces dans les eaux sénégalo-mauritaniennes sont résumés. La forte dépendance des ressources vis-à-vis des conditions de l'environnement est soulignée. Fishery exploitation systems are driven by environmental fluctuations, the communities'adaptability, and the dynamics of interaction between these two. Better understanding and monitoring of fishery systems therefore requires an integrated representation scheme. An object-oriented model is presented for that purpose. Each component of the fishery system is considered a sub-object of a "fishery-system" generic object. In the hierarchy, environments, markets, fish stocks, fish industries, and equipment, as well as fishing, trading, and consuming communities are identified. The different components can exchange information, fishes, currencies, or human actors. A submodel of the human actors' decision process formalizes the interactions between the different components of the represented system. An application of this sub-model to a Senegalese (West Africa) small-scale fishery is presented. Ten years of fishery activity with observed communities' appearances and collapses, simple biological resource and fish prices dynamics have been successfully simulated. This scale model of the fishery system provides a simulation tool whereby hypotheses can be tested and the consequences of a perturbation (e.g., resource of market fluctuation, management decision) evaluated on the whole system dynamics. Les facteurs qui influencent la distribution spatiale des bivalves #Atactodea striata$, #Gafrarium tumidum$ et #Anadara scapha$ ont été analysées sur la côte sud-ouest de Nouvelle-Calédonie en utilisant une approche multivariable (analyse des correspondances). #A. striata$ est rencontré préférentiellement sur les plages de sable grossier. #G. tumidum$ est inféodé aux substrats situés près de la limite intérieure des basses mers de mortes-eaux et paraît relativement indépendant de la granulométrie du substrat. Les adultes d'#A. scapha$ sont rencontrés à un niveau bathymétrique inférieur dans des sédiments composés de 40% de sables moyens, fins et très fins et de 30% de sables grossiers. Une répartition différentielle entre jeunes et adultes a été mise en évidence sur cette espèce, suggérant un comportement migratoire des juvéniles. (Résumé d'auteur)

L'analyse synthétique des résultats d'une étude multidisciplinaire menée sur une île de la plaine inondée d'Amazonie centrale et sur son lac intérieur débouche sur un certain nombre d'observations. La production piscicole actuelle est largement inférieure au potentiel estimé. La différence peut néanmoins varier amplement d'une année à l'autre. La composition des captures est sensiblement différente de la composition du peuplement. Outre qu'il existe dans le peuplement de nombreuses espèces de petite taille dont l'exploitation n'est pas pratiquée, il y a nettement un désintérêt de la pêche pour certaines espèces exploitables abondantes. Le régime de crue affecte, de manière prononcée, les comportements de pêche. Il affecte aussi les captures par effort qui, du fait de larges changements de la densité des poissons dans le volume d'eau, ne sont pas proportionnelles à l'abondance en poisson. Lorsque la hauteur d'eau moyenne sur une année augmente, la biomasse totale de poisson augmente aussi, mais les captures par effort diminuent

The annual c.p.u.e. and mean catch per set of the seiners working along the "Petite Cote" off Senegal from 1969 to 1987 have been studied using multivariate and time series analysis. The annual mean catch per set has decreased from 22 to 4 metric tons during this period. This phenomenon may correspond both to a decrease in the proportion of the large schools in the stock, and to a real decrease of the overall abundance associated with a modification of fishing strategy : fishermen accept to catch smaller and smaller schools since larger schools are less frequently found. The increase in fishing effort and the variation of upwelling strength seem to govern these changes. The possibility of using the mean catch per set as an index of school size, and perhaps of abundance, is envisaged in the conclusion. (Résumé d'auteur)

Les phénomènes hydroliques (sic) sont essentiels dans la répartition des espèces pélagiques et leur abondance en certains secteurs. L'hydrologie de la mer de Java est mal connue, car nous ne possédons pas de données recouvrant plusieurs cycles annuels. La synthèse des travaux réalisés depuis 1910 nous permet d'affirmer que malgré son caractère relativement fermé la mer de Java est le siège d'importants mouvements d'eaux, dépendant du régime des moussons, qui modifient profondément son hydrologie. Les fluctuations de salinité sont élevées alors que celles de la température sont faibles. La richesse en sels nutritifs y semble moyenne. (Résumé d'auteur)

Les variations annuelles de la salinite de surface autour de Tahiti indiquent un minimum en été austral (Décembre à Avril) et un maximum en hiver austral (Juillet à Octobre). Les prises de thon de surface (skipjack et yellowfin) en nombre/jour sont élevées en été austral et 2 fois plus faibles en hiver austral. L'extension jusqu'en Polynésie en été austral du contre courant equatorial sud, peu salé et plus riche en plancton que les eaux du gyre tropical, semble être le facteur causal liant ces deux paramètres. Lastly, the tuna-environment programme investigates the impact of environment variability (seasonal and inter-annuel) on the distribution and availability of tunas to the different surface fishing gears, using the data bases available at ORSTOM (oceanography) and at the Tuna and Billfish Assessment Programme of the South Pacific Commission (tuna fisheries statistics); this is collaborative effort between these two organisations. Some preliminary results of this study are presented hereafter.

In order to make up a set of data available for a study of climatic induced fisheries variations, an historical description of sardine and herring fisheries is attempted. It is supposed that, during some periods, chronological records of landings might provide useful indications of availability and total abundance of these highly variable stock

Shrimps are short-lived animals living in highly variable inshore areas during the juvenile phase and are therefore subject to particularly strong environmentally driven variability in recruitment and stock size. This paper examines the likely consequences of this fact on the surplus yield production and stock-recruitment modelling underlining the high risk of generating artefactual models when the data series are short.
