Abstract:: Around parturition, dairy cows inevitably and perhaps necessarily experience some degree of systemic inflammation, but when excessive or dysregulated, it may contribute to health disorders. As immune activation decreases blood Ca, greater extracellular Ca availability may potentiate or sustain inflammation. We hypothesized that in clinically healthy multiparous cows, postpartum administration of supplemental Ca would increase serum concentrations of inflammatory markers. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to investigate a possible effect of supplementing calcium (Ca) on postpartum systemic inflammation in dairy cows. Healthy cows (n = 101) from 2 commercial dairy farms in Ontario calving into parity 2, 3, or 4 were enrolled. Cows were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to receive an oral bolus of Ca (42 g of Ca) within 12 h after calving and a second bolus 12 h later (TRT; n = 51), or no Ca supplementation (CON; n = 49). Concentrations in serum of total Ca (tCa), haptoglobin (Hp), and albumin (ALB) were assessed at d 0 (within 12 h postpartum), 0.5 (12 h later), 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 postpartum; ionized calcium was assessed at d 0, 0.5, 2, and 4, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) were assessed at d 0, 2, and 4. Multivariable linear regression models of each outcome accounting for repeated measures included treatment, parity (2 vs. 3 or 4), farm, sampling day, baseline concentration (d 0), and interactions of treatment with farm, parity, and day. Results are presented as least squares means and 95% confidence intervals. Concentration of tCa tended to be greater at d 0.5 (TRT 2.07 mmol/L [2.03–2.12]; CON 2.01 [1.96–2.06]) but was lesser at d 2 (TRT 2.18 [2.13–2.23]; CON 2.27 [2.23–2.32]) in TRT than CON cows. Concentrations of LBP were greater in TRT (2.28 ng/mL [2.06–2.50]) than CON (1.99 [1.77–2.21]) in parity 2, but not different in older cows (TRT 2.28 ng/mL [2.06–2.50]; CON 1.99 [1.77–2.21]). Concentrations of SAA were greater in TRT than CON cows at d 2 (TRT 135 ug/mL [124–146]; CON 114 [75–106]). Treatment had no effect on ALB or Hp. In clinically healthy cows, oral Ca supplementation had a small transient effect on blood tCa and little indication of increasing inflammation based on the analytes evaluated.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this prospective observational study was to investigate associations of postpartum health with estrus detection (ED) by activity monitors and pregnancy outcomes in dairy cows. A total of 1,743 Holstein cows from 2 commercial dairy herds in Ontario, Canada were enrolled 3 wk before expected parturition and examined for health variables until 9 wk postpartum. Body condition score (BCS) and lameness were measured at 3 wk prepartum, and serum concentrations of total Ca, haptoglobin (Hp), and nonesterified fatty acids were measured at 2 and 6 ± 2 d in milk (DIM), and blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and metritis were assessed at 4, 8, 11, and 15 ± 2 DIM. Cows were examined for purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) and endometritis (ENDO) by endometrial cytology at wk 5, for lameness at wk 3 and 7, for BCS at wk 9 postpartum, and for time to onset of cyclicity by biweekly serum progesterone (P4) measurements. Additional disease data were obtained from farm records. Reproductive management for first AI was primarily based on ED by activity monitors until at least 75 DIM, and cows not detected in estrus were synchronized. Data were analyzed in multivariable logistic or Cox proportional hazards regression models including blood markers, health variables, potential covariates, and herd as a random effect. Estrus was detected in 77% of primiparous and 66% of multiparous cows between 50 or 55 DIM and 75 DIM. In 1,246 cows, the model-predicted probability of ED (percentage point difference) was lower in cows that had retained placenta (−14%), ENDO (−7%), PVD (−8%), delayed cyclicity (no P4 > 1 ng/mL by wk 9; −12%), or ≥0.5-point BCS loss (−14%) compared with cows without each of these risk factors, and it was negatively associated with blood BHB at 15 DIM. Considering only variables measured on farm (not requiring laboratory analysis), the probability of ED was lower (56 vs. 81%) in cows with >1 risk factor compared with cows without risk factors. The predicted probability of pregnancy at first artificial insemination (percentage point difference) was lower in cows that had ENDO (−7%) or PVD (−7%), and negatively associated with serum Hp at 6 ± 2 DIM. In cows detected in estrus by 75 DIM (n = 888), risk factors for reduced pregnancy rate by 250 DIM (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR); 95% confidence intervals) included difficult calving (AHR: 0.67; 0.45 to 1.00), metritis (AHR: 0.79; 0.61 to 1.01), PVD (AHR: 0.79; 0.65 to 0.97), or lameness (AHR: 0.79; 0.62 to 1.01), and it was negatively associated with serum Hp at 6 ± 2 DIM. Monitoring postpartum health may be used to identify cows that are more or less likely to be detected in estrus by activity monitors and to become pregnant in a timely manner. This would support a selective reproductive management program with targeted interventions.

ABSTRACT: Ketosis in dairy cattle is primarily diagnosed based on the concentrations of ketone bodies in the blood, milk, or urine. Cow-side tests using these fluids are available for rapid detection of elevated concentrations of ketone bodies. Although these tests have been extensively validated, the performance of different tests has not been compared over time. Our objectives were to investigate the relationship between point-of-care diagnostic tests measuring the concentrations of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood (BT; Precision Xtra, Abbott Laboratories), BHB in milk (MT; Keto-Test, Elanco), and acetoacetate (AcAc) in urine (UT; Ketostix, Bayer Corporation) through cases of ketosis. Holstein cows (n = 148) were screened daily for hyperketonemia (HYK; blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) from 3 to 16 d in milk (DIM); moreover, milk and urine samples were collected concomitantly and tested for ketones (ketosis thresholds: 100 µmol/L milk BHB and 5 mg/dL urine AcAc). Of the animals screened (n = 148), 74% were diagnosed with HYK. When diagnosed with HYK, cows were treated with propylene glycol orally once daily for 5 d. After the day of diagnosis (d 0), hyperketonemic cows were retested with BT, MT, and UT for 3 d (d 1, 2, and 3). We assessed the diagnostic test performance and time to ketosis (survival analyses and Cox proportional hazards models) of MT and UT compared with BT. Considering all paired samples (before and after diagnosis of HYK), MT had 61% sensitivity and 91% specificity, whereas the UT had 77% sensitivity and 94% specificity compared with BT. The specificity of MT and UT increased from d 0 to d 1, decreased on d 2, and increased on d 3. The median time to diagnosis of ketosis in blood was 5 DIM (95% CI 5 to 7 DIM); moreover, MT and UT had 2 d greater median time to diagnosis of ketosis compared with the BT [7 DIM (6 to 11 d); and 7 DIM (6 to 13 d), respectively]. We concluded that the UT is a more sensitive predictor of blood BHB concentration than the MT. The UT and MT tests diagnosed ketotic cows approximately 2 d later than the BT. The possible consequences of delay in detection of ketosis in milk and urine should be investigated.

ABSTRACT: This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of temporarily reducing milking frequency (MF) on the resolution of ketosis and milk production in dairy cows in early lactation. To detect ketosis [blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L], Holstein cows were screened daily from 3 to 16 d in milk using a cow-side meter. Cows diagnosed with ketosis (n = 104) were randomly assigned to twice-daily milking (TDM) or reduced to once-daily milking (ODM) for 2 wk, then returned to twice-daily milking. Both treatment groups received a 5-d treatment of an oral propylene glycol drench (PG; 300 g) beginning on the afternoon of the diagnosis; cows received additional 5-d PG treatments if they had a ketotic test result (blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) at least 4 d after finishing the first PG treatment. Blood BHB tests were conducted for the first 3 d after ketosis diagnosis, and then once every 3 d for 21 d of trial (DOT). Milk and milk component data were collected weekly for 15 wk following trial enrollment. The ODM group showed rapidly and markedly decreased blood BHB concentrations (primiparous cows: 1 DOT, 0.92 ODM vs. 1.22 TDM, 15 DOT, 0.55 vs. 0.81 mmol/L; multiparous cows: 1 DOT, 1.01 vs. 1.40, 15 DOT, 0.78 vs. 1.65 mmol/L). In addition, a logistic regression model indicated that ODM cows were less likely to have blood BHB concentrations ≥1.2 mmol/L [primiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 1% (95% confidence interval: 0–10%) vs. TDM 43% (30–58%), 15 DOT ODM 0% (0–0.2%) vs. TDM 22% (13–36%); multiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 33% (24–44%) vs. TDM 59% (48–69%), 15 DOT ODM 20.9% (13–31%) vs. TDM 64% (53–74%)]. The proportion of ODM cows that required additional treatments of PG were substantially lower than the TDM group (ODM: 39%; TDM: 64%) than the TDM cows during the initial 21-d period. However, during the 2-wk treatment period, cows in the ODM group produced 26% less milk and 25% less energy-corrected milk than the TDM cows. During wk 3 to 15, when all cows were milked twice daily, ODM cows produced less milk (−14%) and energy-corrected milk (−12%) compared with the TDM group. Milk protein percentage was greater, and milk fat percentage and linear score tended to be greater in the ODM group over 15 wk. In conclusion, a 2-wk reduction of MF in ketotic cows from twice to once daily with treatment with PG resolved ketosis and decreased blood BHB concentrations more effectively than treating TDM cows with PG alone. However, the 2-wk MF reduction had immediate and long-term (up to 13 wk after cessation of MF reduction) negative effects on milk production.

Laboratory profile of young ovines was studied in order to evaluate and compare their antiserum production from natural and Cobalt-60 irradiated Crotalus durissus terrificus (C.d.t.) venoms. The parameters analyzed included complete blood count, and urea, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, total proteins, albumin and globulin serum measurements. Three groups of six animals each were used. Group 1 (G1) received natural C.d.t. venom; Group 2 (G2) received irradiated C.d.t. venom; and Group 3 (G3) was used as control and did not receive venom, only adjuvants, using seven venom inoculations. During the experimental period, animals were fortnightly weighed. Uridine diphosphate-glucose dehydrogenase (UGD) is an enzyme that produces uridine diphosphate-glucuronic acid (UDP-GlcA), which is an intermediate in glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) production pathways. GAGs are generally extracted from animal tissues. Efforts to produce GAGs in a safer way have been conducted by constructing artificial biosynthetic pathways in heterologous microbial hosts. This work characterizes novel enzymes with potential for UDP-GlcA biotechnological production. The UGD enzymes from Zymomonas mobilis (ZmUGD) and from Lactobacillus johnsonii (LbjUGD) were expressed in Escherichia coli. These two enzymes and an additional eukaryotic one from Capra hircus (ChUGD) were also expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. The three enzymes herein studied represent different UGD phylogenetic groups. The UGD activity was evaluated through UDP-GlcA quantification in vivo and after in vitro reactions. Engineered E. coli strains expressing ZmUGD and LbjUGD were able to produce in vivo 28.4 µM and 14.9 µM UDP-GlcA, respectively. Using S. cerevisiae as the expression host, the highest in vivo UDP-GlcA production was obtained for the strain CEN.PK2-1C expressing ZmUGD (17.9 µM) or ChUGD (14.6 µM). Regarding the in vitro assays, under the optimal conditions, E. coli cell extract containing LbjUGD was able to produce about 1800 µM, while ZmUGD produced 407 µM UDP-GlcA, after 1 h of reaction. Using engineered yeasts, the in vitro production of UDP-GlcA reached a maximum of 533 µM using S. cerevisiae CEN.PK2-1C_pSP-GM_LbjUGD cell extract. The UGD enzymes were active in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic hosts, therefore the genes and expression chassis herein used can be valuable alternatives for further industrial applications.

The association of HLA-B27 with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and other spondyloarthropathies (SpA), remains as one of the strongest between HLA molecules and human disease. Since it was reported, in 1973, it has been extensively studied in order to understand the underlying pathogenic mechanism. The objective of this article is to review the current knowledge on the structure and polymorphism of HLA-B27 molecule, as well as describe the main pathogenic hypotheses trying to explain its association with AS.

A study is conducted to examine the relationship between archaeal community structure and oil spill bioremediation in laboratory microcosms and in a bioremediation field trial. 16S rRNA gene-based PCR and denaturing gradient gel analysis revealed that the archaeal community in oil-free laboratory microcosms was stable for a period of 26 days.

Chondroitin is a glycosaminoglycan that has gained widespread use in nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, mainly for treating osteoarthritis. Traditionally, it has been extracted from animal cartilage but recently, biotechnological processes have emerged as a commercial alternative to avoid the risk of viral or prion contamination and offer a vegan-friendly source. Typically, these methods involve producing the chondroitin backbone using pathogenic bacteria and then modifying it enzymatically through the action of sulfotransferases. Despite the challenges of expressing active sulfotransferases in bacteria, the use of eukaryotic microorganisms is still limited to a few works using Pichia pastoris. To create a safer and efficient biotechnological platform, we constructed a biosynthetic pathway for chondroitin production in S. cerevisiae as a proof-of-concept. Up to 125 mg/L and 200 mg/L of intracellular and extracellular chondroitin were produced, respectively. Furthermore, as genome-scale models are valuable tools for identifying novel targets for metabolic engineering, a stoichiometric model of chondroitin-producing S. cerevisiae was developed and used in optimization algorithms. Our research yielded several novel targets, such as uridine diphosphate (UDP)-N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase (QRI1), glucosamine-6-phosphate acetyltransferase (GNA1), or N-acetylglucosamine-phosphate mutase (PCM1) overexpression, that might enhance chondroitin production and guide future experimental research to develop more efficient host organisms for the biotechnological production process.

Conventional assays of polymorphonuclear cell (PMN, neutrophil) function such as oxidative burst (OB) and phagocytosis (PC) are widely used to evaluate innate immunity in the transition period of dairy cows. Oxidative burst is commonly evaluated by measuring PMN median fluorescence intensity (MFI) involving the release of reactive oxygen species after in vitro stimulation. Phagocytosis can be measured by engulfment of fluorescent beads by PMN. DQ-ovalbumin (DQ-OVA) is a molecule suitable for the assessment of intracellular proteolytic degradation, so it might be informative about an additional pathway of pathogen handling by PMN. In this study, we evaluated the use of the DQ-OVA assay for the assessment of PMN function and the relationships among OB, PC, and DQ-OVA results in PMN isolated from blood of dairy cows between 5 and 21 d post partum. Results of the DQ-OVA validation assay were assessed with mixed linear regression models. Pearson correlation tests and kappa values for agreement were used to associate the MFI between each PMN function assay (OB, PC, and DQ-OVA). For the validation assay (9 cows in 3 replicates), PMN incubated with DQ-OVA were stimulated with IFN-γ or inhibited with cytochalasin D, and fluorescence was compared with untreated PMN. Stimulated and inhibited PMN had greater (970 ± 160 units) and lesser (593 ± 55 units) MFI relative to untreated PMN (791 ± 154 units), respectively, indicating that DQ-OVA fluorescence reflected enhanced or reduced endocytic and proteolytic function. To associate the MFI outcomes among OB, PC, and DQ-OVA, 153 samples from 40 cows were analyzed. Results showed significant, although weak association between DQ-OVA and PC MFI (Pearson r = 0.16). When values of MFI were categorized according to the first ("high" PMN functionality), second and third ("moderate" PMN functionality), or fourth ("low" PMN functionality) quartiles, agreement beyond chance (κ) was moderate: κ = 0.38 for DQ-OVA and OB, κ = 0.43 for DQ-OVA and PC, and κ = 0.43 for OB and PC. The DQ-OVA assay may complement traditional PMN functional assays because it provides additional information regarding the combination of endocytosis and proteolytic degradation, but it is not a substitute for assessment of OB or PC. Abstract Objectives Many acellular dermal matrices (ADMs) are available for use in periodontal surgical procedures. However, few studies exist evaluating their in vivo healing properties. The objectives of this study were to compare the wound healing and remodeling of two ADMs used for gingival augmentation procedures in the rat model. Materials and methods This was a nonrandomized controlled split‐mouth study. Envelope flaps were surgically created in the maxillary quadrants of 24 Sprague Dawley rats. Each received either (a) AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix, or (b) OrACELL. Gingival tissue from one mandibular quadrant served as the untreated control. Six male and six female rats were treated for 7 or 21 days. Biopsies were processed for histologic analysis (H&E, Picro‐sirius red, Verhoeff's solution) or RNA analysis (RT‐PCR) to analyze the expression of type I collagen (Col1a1), fibronectin (Fn‐1) and VEGF‐A (Vegf‐A). Results There was a greater density of fibroblasts in OrACELL compared to AlloDerm at both timepoints. There was a greater density of elastin present in AlloDerm compared to OrACELL at 7 days but no differences at 21 days. There were no differences between test groups in the percentage of birefringent collagen or in the expression of Vegf‐A or Fn‐1. At 7 days, there were significantly more fibroblasts for males in the OrACELL group compared to females. At 21 days, there was a significantly greater expression of Col1a1 for males in the OrACELL group compared to females. Conclusions Early wound healing and remodeling of OrACELL appeared to occur more rapidly than AlloDerm and was accelerated in male rats. Whether these results have clinical implications for soft tissue grafting procedures in humans remains to be determined.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a glycosaminoglycan with a broad range of applications being a popular dietary supplement for osteoarthritis. Usually, CS is extracted from animal sources. However, the known risks of animal products use have been driving the search for alternative methods and sources to obtain this compound. Several pathogenic bacteria naturally produce chondroitin-like polysaccharides through well-known pathways and, therefore, have been the basis for numerous studies that aim to produce chondroitin using non-pathogenic hosts. However, the yields obtained are not enough to meet the high demand for this glycosaminoglycan. Metabolic engineering strategies have been used to construct improved heterologous hosts. The identification of metabolic bottlenecks and regulation points, and the screening for efficient enzymes are key points for constructing microbial cell factories with improved chondroitin yields to achieve industrial CS production. The recent advances on enzymatic and microbial strategies to produce non-animal chondroitin are herein reviewed. Challenges and prospects for future research are also discussed.

The Brazilian species Pustulatirus ogum and Hemipolygona beckyae were examined, and certain morphological characters were described. Both species were originally assigned to the genus Latirus, considered as a heterogeneous complex. The radulae of both species are like that which characterizes Latirus, in which the innermost cusp of the rachidian tooth is well developed but always smaller than the other cusps. This feature differs from Leucozonia, in which this cusp is reduced or absent. The penis tapers terminally, and the tapered part may be long (more than half the total penis length), as in H. beckyae, or very short (less than half the total penis length), as in P. ogum. The anatomical data observed in both species are discussed under the framework of fasciolariid systematics and they appear to be widespread among other fasciolariid species. For this reason, to date, the soft-part features here provided and those known from previously studied species of Latirus are not useful for delineating precise generic diagnoses.

Coupled carbon/climate models are predicting changes in Amazon carbon and water cycles for the near future, with conversion of forest into savanna-like vegetation. However, empirical data to support these models are still scarce for Amazon. Facing this scenario, we investigated whether conservation status and changes in rainfall regime have influenced the forest-savanna mosaic over 20 years, from 1986 to 2006, in a transitional area in Northern Amazonia. By applying a spectral linear mixture model to a Landsat-5-TM time series, we identified protected savanna enclaves within a strictly protected nature reserve (Maracá Ecological Station - MES) and non-protected forest islands at its outskirts and compared their areas among 1986/1994/2006. The protected savanna enclaves decreased 26% in the 20-years period at an average rate of 0.131 ha year-1, with a greater reduction rate observed during times of higher precipitation, whereas the non-protected forest islands remained stable throughout the period of study, balancing the encroachment of forests into the savanna during humid periods and savannization during reduced rainfall periods. Thus, keeping favorable climate conditions, the MES conservation status would continue to favor the forest encroachment upon savanna, while the non-protected outskirt areas would remain resilient to disturbance regimes. However, if the increases in the frequency of dry periods predicted by climate models for this region are confirmed, future changes in extension and directions of forest limits will be affected, disrupting ecological services as carbon storage and the maintenance of local biodiversity.

The unfavorable evolution of a young ovine during hyperimmunization process with Crotalus durissus terrificus venom was investigated in order to differentiate its origin between ophidic envenomation and copper toxicosis. Clinical, laboratory, necroscopic and histological exams as well as evaluation and measurement of heavy metals (copper) in the kidneys and in the liver were carried out. Blood counts revealed anemia and serological tests showed high levels of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine phosphokinase, total bilirubin and indirect bilirubin; which indicates liver, kidney and skeletal muscle damages. At necropsy, the animal presented hepatopathy and nephropathy. Histological examination revealed renal and hepatic features that may imply copper intoxication. Copper levels were 237.8 µg/g in the liver and 51.2 µg/g in the kidneys. Although the amount of metal found in both organs was below the level that can cause death, according to the literature, anatomopathological signs were suggestive of copper intoxication. Therefore, the hypothesis of metal toxicosis during the hyperimmunization process became more consistent than the crotalic envenomation one.

The aim of this study is to reevaluate the plant sources of the Amazon rosewood oil which have been named Aniba rosaeodora Ducke and Aniba duckei Kosterm. There is some disagreement on the exact botanical status of these species. Some Lauraceae specialists analyzing available material from both species concluded that there is no basis for regarding them as different. Based on our results we are confirming that the chemical composition of both species is quite different from that previously reported. So we are suggesting to bring back the previous botanical rosewood status as proposed by Adolph Ducke.

Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito residual da adubação potássica do azevém sobre o arroz subseqüente, em sistema de semeadura direta, foi desenvolvido um experimento de campo, no período de maio de 1996 a abril de 1997, no Centro Agropecuário da Palma-UFPel, localizado no município do Capão do Leão (RS). Foi utilizado um Planossolo pertencente à unidade de mapeamento Pelotas. Os tratamentos constituíram-se por três níveis de K aplicados no azevém, equivalentes a 0, 0,5 e 1 vez a dose recomendada de 70 kg ha-1 de K2O, sobre cada um dos quais foram aplicados quatro níveis de K no arroz, cultivado após o azevém, equivalentes a 0, 0,5, 1 e 1,5 vez a dose recomendada de 60 kg ha-1 de K2O, resultando num fatorial completo com 12 tratamentos. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que: (a) o K disponível após as culturas não aumentou neste solo com a adubação potássica nas doses recomendadas; (b) o efeito residual da adubação potássica do azevém para a cultura seguinte, neste solo, equivaleu a pelo menos 56 % do potássio aplicado, contido na parte aérea do azevém.

Objectives. To investigate the efficacy of infliximab in the treatment of severe calcium pyrophosphate deposition diseases (CPPD). Methods. Two patients with severe CPPD and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis- (DISH-) like phenotype are described. Both patients were resistant to therapy with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Both patients were treated with infliximab, a TNF-α receptor antagonist, for nine years. Results. Treatment with infliximab resulted in major clinical and laboratory improvements without relevant side effects. Conclusions. These results suggest that infliximab may be an effective treatment of severe CPDD.

The compliance with influenza vaccination is poor among health care workers (HCWs) due to misconceptions about safety and effectiveness of influenza vaccine. We proposed an educational prospective study to demonstrate to HCWs that influenza vaccine is safe and that other respiratory viruses (RV) are the cause of respiratory symptoms in the months following influenza vaccination. 398 HCWs were surveyed for adverse events (AE) occurring within 48 h of vaccination. AE were reported by 30% of the HCWs. No severe AE was observed. A subset of 337 HCWs was followed up during four months, twice a week, for the detection of respiratory symptoms. RV was diagnosed by direct immunofluorescent assay (DFA) and real time PCR in symptomatic HCWs. Influenza A was detected in five episodes of respiratory symptoms (5.3%) and other RV in 26 (27.9%) episodes. The incidence density of influenza and other RV was 4.3 and 10.8 episodes per 100 HCW-month, respectively. The educational nature of the present study may persuade HCWs to develop a more positive attitude to influenza vaccination.

Pro-fibrotic M2-like macrophages are widely implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of lung fibrosis due to their production of pro-fibrotic growth factors and cytokines. Yeast beta-glucan (YBG) microparticles have shown potential as immunomodulators that can convert macrophage polarization from a pro-fibrotic phenotype to an anti-fibrotic phenotype through the engagement of the Dectin-1 receptor. However, the processing conditions used to fabricate YBG microparticles can lead to unpredictable immunomodulatory effects. Herein, we report the use of Pressurized Gas eXpanded liquids (PGX) Technology® to fabricate YBG (PGX-YBG) microparticles with higher surface areas, lower densities, and smaller and more uniform size distributions compared to commercially available spray-dried YBGs. PGX-YBG is shown to activate Dectin-1 more efficiently in vitro while avoiding significant TLR 2/4 activation. Furthermore, PGX-YBG microparticles effectively modulate M2-like fibrosis-inducing murine and human macrophages into fibrosis-suppressing macrophages both in vitro as well as in ex vivo precision-cut murine lung slices, suggesting their potential utility as a therapeutic for addressing a broad spectrum of fibrotic end-point lung diseases., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest This work has been conducted in collaboration with Ceapro Inc. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telework emerged as a pivotal strategy to mitigate the spread of the virus. However, telework's feasibility was contingent on job roles. This gave rise to two distinct groups: teleworkers and on-site workers. However, the impacts of social support and well-being extended to both groups. This study investigated the link between organisational and supervisory family support and subjective well-being, examining work engagement as a mediator. Conducted in Portugal, this cross-sectional study surveyed 515 individuals via web-based questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and multiple-group analysis. The findings revealed a positive correlation between perceived organisational family support (POFS) and work engagement for both groups. Additionally, perceived supervisory family support (PSFS) positively correlated with work engagement for telecommuters but not on-site workers. Furthermore, work engagement was positively associated with subjective well-being for both groups. Moreover, work engagement mediated the relationship between POFS and subjective well-being. This study enriches the literature by analysing POFS, PSFS, work engagement, and subjective well-being dynamics among teleworkers and on-site employees.

The objective of this prospective observational study was to investigate associations of postpartum health with estrus detection (ED) by activity monitors and pregnancy outcomes in dairy cows. A total of 1,743 Holstein cows from 2 commercial dairy herds in Ontario, Canada were enrolled 3 wk before expected parturition and examined for health variables until 9 wk postpartum. Body condition score (BCS) and lameness were measured at 3 wk prepartum, and serum concentrations of total Ca, haptoglobin (Hp), and nonesterified fatty acids were measured at 2 and 6 ± 2 d in milk (DIM), and blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and metritis were assessed at 4, 8, 11, and 15 ± 2 DIM. Cows were examined for purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) and endometritis (ENDO) by endometrial cytology at wk 5, for lameness at wk 3 and 7, for BCS at wk 9 postpartum, and for time to onset of cyclicity by biweekly serum progesterone (P4) measurements. Additional disease data were obtained from farm records. Reproductive management for first AI was primarily based on ED by activity monitors until at least 75 DIM, and cows not detected in estrus were synchronized. Data were analyzed in multivariable logistic or Cox proportional hazards regression models including blood markers, health variables, potential covariates, and herd as a random effect. Estrus was detected in 77% of primiparous and 66% of multiparous cows between 50 or 55 DIM and 75 DIM. In 1,246 cows, the model-predicted probability of ED (percentage point difference) was lower in cows that had retained placenta (-14%), ENDO (-7%), PVD (-8%), delayed cyclicity (no P4 > 1 ng/mL by wk 9; -12%), or ≥0.5-point BCS loss (-14%) compared with cows without each of these risk factors, and it was negatively associated with blood BHB at 15 DIM. Considering only variables measured on farm (not requiring laboratory analysis), the probability of ED was lower (56 vs. 81%) in cows with >1 risk factor compared with cows without risk factors. The predicted probability of pregnancy at first artificial insemination (percentage point difference) was lower in cows that had ENDO (-7%) or PVD (-7%), and negatively associated with serum Hp at 6 ± 2 DIM. In cows detected in estrus by 75 DIM (n = 888), risk factors for reduced pregnancy rate by 250 DIM (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR); 95% confidence intervals) included difficult calving (AHR: 0.67; 0.45 to 1.00), metritis (AHR: 0.79; 0.61 to 1.01), PVD (AHR: 0.79; 0.65 to 0.97), or lameness (AHR: 0.79; 0.62 to 1.01), and it was negatively associated with serum Hp at 6 ± 2 DIM. Monitoring postpartum health may be used to identify cows that are more or less likely to be detected in estrus by activity monitors and to become pregnant in a timely manner. Around parturition, dairy cows inevitably and perhaps necessarily experience some degree of systemic inflammation, but when excessive or dysregulated, it may contribute to health disorders. As immune activation decreases blood Ca, greater extracellular Ca availability may potentiate or sustain inflammation. We hypothesized that in clinically healthy multiparous cows, postpartum administration of supplemental Ca would increase serum concentrations of inflammatory markers. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to investigate a possible effect of supplementing calcium (Ca) on postpartum systemic inflammation in dairy cows. Healthy cows (n = 101) from 2 commercial dairy farms in Ontario calving into parity 2, 3, or 4 were enrolled. Cows were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to receive an oral bolus of Ca (42 g of Ca) within 12 h after calving and a second bolus 12 h later (TRT; n = 51), or no Ca supplementation (CON; n = 49). Concentrations in serum of total Ca (tCa), haptoglobin (Hp), and albumin (ALB) were assessed at d 0 (within 12 h postpartum), 0.5 (12 h later), 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 postpartum; ionized calcium was assessed at d 0, 0.5, 2, and 4, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) were assessed at d 0, 2, and 4. Multivariable linear regression models of each outcome accounting for repeated measures included treatment, parity (2 vs. 3 or 4), farm, sampling day, baseline concentration (d 0), and interactions of treatment with farm, parity, and day. Results are presented as least squares means and 95% confidence intervals. Concentration of tCa tended to be greater at d 0.5 (TRT 2.07 mmol/L [2.03-2.12]; CON 2.01 [1.96-2.06]) but was lesser at d 2 (TRT 2.18 [2.13-2.23]; CON 2.27 [2.23-2.32]) in TRT than CON cows. Concentrations of LBP were greater in TRT (2.28 ng/mL [2.06-2.50]) than CON (1.99 [1.77-2.21]) in parity 2, but not different in older cows (TRT 2.28 ng/mL [2.06-2.50]; CON 1.99 [1.77-2.21]). Concentrations of SAA were greater in TRT than CON cows at d 2 (TRT 135 ug/mL [124-146]; CON 114 [75-106]). Treatment had no effect on ALB or Hp. Objective: The exposure to some environmental sounds has detrimental effects on health and might affect the performance in cognitive tasks. In this study, we analyze the effect of the neighborhood noises of a baby crying and dogs barking on the autonomic response and cognitive function., Materials and Methods: Twenty participants were exposed, in separate sessions, to white noise, a baby crying, a small dog barking, and a large dog barking. During each session, heart rate, skin conductance, reaction times, spatial memory, and mathematical processing measures were taken throughout time., Results: The sounds of a baby crying and dogs barking led to significantly higher heart rates and skin conductance levels as opposed to exposure to white noise. Results were not as consistent with exposure to barking as they were to the baby. Exposure to the baby crying and dogs barking led to faster reaction times, possibly due to a facilitation by the autonomic system activation. No significant effects on spatial memory were found. Conversely, participants performed worse and slower in a mathematical task when exposed to the dog and baby sounds, than when exposed to control noise., Conclusion: Exposure to the sound of crying babies and dogs barking leads to increased sympathetic response and decreased cognitive ability, as compared to exposure to control sounds. Special attention should be paid to the mitigation of exposure to these types of noises.

Patient organizations play an ever-growing role in modern societies by providing organized resources for patients and care partners. Importantly, patient organizations enable patients to define and share their needs and views. In Parkinson's disease (PD), patient organizations play significant roles in different countries. However, there is limited support and resources tailored for people with early onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD). These individuals face unique social, professional, and personal challenges that are often not accounted for by general PD organizations, which play very important roles for a significant proportion of individuals with PD. In Portugal, this was the situation until 2022, when Young Parkies Portugal (YPP) was founded to allow people with EOPD and various stakeholders to join forces to cover their specific needs. In this manuscript, we aim to share our experience in building an association for people with EOPD, reflecting on the reasons for this need, the activities developed thus far, challenges in implementation, and future directions. In summary, we believe that nonprofit organizations like YPP play an essential role in shaping the care and support of people with PD care and should be considered key partners of care alongside the larger multidisciplinary team. We are confident that sharing our experience can inspire and guide the implementation of similar initiatives in other countries.

Advances are needed in the site-directed mutagenesis of large plasmids for protein structure-function studies, as current methods are often inefficient, complicated and time-consuming. Here two new methods are reported that overcome these difficulties, namely the single primer extension reaction (SSPER) strategy that reaches 100% efficiency and the reduce recycle PCR (rrPCR) method that is advantageous in generating single and pairwise combinations of mutations. Both methods are distinguished from current technologies by the addition of a step that easily removes the oligonucleotide primer(s) after the first reaction, thus allowing for the addition of a second reaction in chronological sequence to generate and isolate the appropriate DNA product with the site-directed mutation(s). High efficiency of the methods is demonstrated by generating single and paired combinations of the 11 site-directed mutations targeted on 5 different plasmid DNA templates ranging from 10 to 12 kb and 57-60% GC-content at a rate of 50-100%. Overall, the methods are demonstrated to be (i) highly accurate, allowing for screening of plasmids by DNA sequencing, (ii) streamlined to generate the mutations within a single day, (iii) cost-effective in requiring only two primers and two enzymes (DpnI and a proofreading DNA polymerase), (iv) straightforward in primer design, (v) applicable for both large and small plasmids, and (vi) easily implemented by entry level researchers., Competing Interests: Declarations of interest The authors do not have a conflict of interest to declare., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Objectives: HIV outcomes centre primarily around clinical markers with limited focus on patient-reported outcomes. With a global trend towards capturing the outcomes that matter most to patients, there is agreement that standardizing the definition of value in HIV care is key to their incorporation. This study aims to address the lack of routine, standardized data in HIV care., Methods: An international working group (WG) of 37 experts and patients, and a steering group (SG) of 18 experts were convened from 14 countries. The project team (PT) identified outcomes by conducting a literature review, screening 1979 articles and reviewing the full texts of 547 of these articles. Semi-structured interviews and advisory groups were performed with the WG, SG and people living with HIV to add to the list of potentially relevant outcomes. The WG voted via a modified Delphi process - informed by six Zoom calls - to establish a core set of outcomes for use in clinical practice., Results: From 156 identified outcomes, consensus was reached to include three patient-reported outcomes, four clinician-reported measures and one administratively reported outcome; standardized measures were included. The WG also reached agreement to measure 22 risk-adjustment variables. This outcome set can be applied to any person living with HIV aged > 18 years., Conclusions: Adoption of the HIV360 outcome set will enable healthcare providers to record, compare and integrate standardized metrics across treatment sites to drive quality improvement in HIV care., (© 2021 British HIV Association.)

This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of temporarily reducing milking frequency (MF) on the resolution of ketosis and milk production in dairy cows in early lactation. To detect ketosis [blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ≥1.2 mmol/L], Holstein cows were screened daily from 3 to 16 d in milk using a cow-side meter. Cows diagnosed with ketosis (n = 104) were randomly assigned to twice-daily milking (TDM) or reduced to once-daily milking (ODM) for 2 wk, then returned to twice-daily milking. Both treatment groups received a 5-d treatment of an oral propylene glycol drench (PG; 300 g) beginning on the afternoon of the diagnosis; cows received additional 5-d PG treatments if they had a ketotic test result (blood BHB ≥1.2 mmol/L) at least 4 d after finishing the first PG treatment. Blood BHB tests were conducted for the first 3 d after ketosis diagnosis, and then once every 3 d for 21 d of trial (DOT). Milk and milk component data were collected weekly for 15 wk following trial enrollment. The ODM group showed rapidly and markedly decreased blood BHB concentrations (primiparous cows: 1 DOT, 0.92 ODM vs. 1.22 TDM, 15 DOT, 0.55 vs. 0.81 mmol/L; multiparous cows: 1 DOT, 1.01 vs. 1.40, 15 DOT, 0.78 vs. 1.65 mmol/L). In addition, a logistic regression model indicated that ODM cows were less likely to have blood BHB concentrations ≥1.2 mmol/L [primiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 1% (95% confidence interval: 0-10%) vs. TDM 43% (30-58%), 15 DOT ODM 0% (0-0.2%) vs. TDM 22% (13-36%); multiparous cows: 3 DOT: ODM 33% (24-44%) vs. TDM 59% (48-69%), 15 DOT ODM 20.9% (13-31%) vs. TDM 64% (53-74%)]. The proportion of ODM cows that required additional treatments of PG were substantially lower than the TDM group (ODM: 39%; TDM: 64%) than the TDM cows during the initial 21-d period. However, during the 2-wk treatment period, cows in the ODM group produced 26% less milk and 25% less energy-corrected milk than the TDM cows. During wk 3 to 15, when all cows were milked twice daily, ODM cows produced less milk (-14%) and energy-corrected milk (-12%) compared with the TDM group. Milk protein percentage was greater, and milk fat percentage and linear score tended to be greater in the ODM group over 15 wk. In conclusion, a 2-wk reduction of MF in ketotic cows from twice to once daily with treatment with PG resolved ketosis and decreased blood BHB concentrations more effectively than treating TDM cows with PG alone. However, the 2-wk MF reduction had immediate and long-term (up to 13 wk after cessation of MF reduction) negative effects on milk production., (The Authors. The complex and interrelated management components of dairy farming are associated with health, production, and profitability of the herd, yet there is limited objective data on current management practices of the far-off, close-up, and fresh periods across Canadian dairy farms. We aimed to describe management practices of Canadian dairy farms by using a pre-existing risk assessment tool and outline potential management opportunities. Upon veterinarians' or producers' request, a transition management risk assessment (The Vital 90, Elanco) was performed by trained observers (n = 10) during farm visits (n = 78) between August 2014 and March 2018. Most farms were in Ontario (n = 64), whereas the remaining were in Alberta (n = 5), British Columbia (n = 4), Manitoba (n = 1), Prince Edward Island (n = 2), Newfoundland (n = 1), and Saskatchewan (n = 1). The study included 79 questions about nutrition, pen management, and cow comfort of the dry (approximate ranges: far-off, -60 to -20 d in milk; close-up, -20 to 0 d in milk) and fresh (0-30 d in milk) periods. The herds averaged 125 milking cows, and most had 2 defined dry groups (81%). Freestall (FS; 54%) and straw-bedded loose pack (BP; 81%) were the most common housing systems observed in the far-off and close-up periods, respectively. Heifers and cows were housed together in 56, 80, and 59% of the far-off, close-up, and fresh pens, respectively. A large proportion of the far-off (FS: >100% stocking density; BP: <9.3 m 2 /cow; 41%), close-up, and fresh pens (FS: >80% stocking density; BP: <13.9 m 2 /cow; 52 and 49%, respectively) were overstocked. Poor water access was observed across all periods (65, 58, and 24% of the far-off, close-up, and fresh, respectively). Only a few farms had proper heat abatement systems in place (absence of properly functioning soakers or fans; <10% in the dry and 15% in the fresh periods). Cows were able to sort their ration in 60% of the dry period pens and 31% of the fresh pens. In 73% of the farms, fresh cow health monitoring protocols were not in place. Colostrum cows and sick cows were housed together in 40% of the farms; 59% separated the newborn from the dam within 2 to 12 h of birth with colostrum harvested immediately thereafter. This work describes prevalent management practices in the dry and fresh periods and highlights areas for potential improvement. Abstract: We present a case of a 75-year-old woman with clinical suspicion of stroke whose cranial CT showed ischemic changes in right precentral region, without visible vascular occlusion, and a right vagal lesion suggestive of paraganglioma. Two weeks later, 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT with IV iodine-based contrast administration (Biograph 6 True Point equipment; Siemens) was performed for characterization of this lesion and staging. Objective: The aim of the study was the development and evaluation of a Descriptive Cognitive Model (DCM) for the identification of three types of usability issues in a low-code development platform (LCDP)., Background: LCDPs raise the level of abstraction of software development by freeing end-users from implementation details. An effective LCDP requires an understanding of how its users conceptualize programming. It is necessary to identify the gap between the LCDP end-users' conceptualization of programming and the actions required by the platform. It is also relevant to evaluate how the conceptualization of the programming tasks varies according to the end-users' skills., Method: DCMs are widely used in the description and analysis of the interaction between users and systems. We propose a DCM which we called PRECOG that combines task decomposition methods with knowledge-based descriptions and criticality analysis. This DCM was validated using empirical techniques to provide the best insight regarding the users' interaction performance. Twenty programmers (10 experts, 10 novices) were observed using an LCDP and their interactions were analyzed according to our DCM., Results: The DCM correctly identified several problems felt by first-time platform users. The patterns of issues observed were qualitatively different between groups. Experts mainly faced interaction-related problems, while novices faced problems attributable to a lack of programming skills., Conclusion: By applying the proposed DCM we were able to predict three types of interaction problems felt by first-time users of the LCDP., Application: The method is applicable when it is relevant to identify possible interaction problems, resulting from the users' background knowledge being insufficient to guarantee a successful completion of the task at hand.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) dry cow diets on postpartum health. Cows from 4 commercial dairy farms in Ontario, Canada, were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm), with cows 3 wk before expected calving, were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD [TRT; -108 mEq/kg of dry matter (DM); target urine pH 6.0-6.5] or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of DM with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period) then switched to the other treatment for the next period, with 4 periods per farm. Urine pH was measured weekly until calving, and body condition score (BCS) was measured at enrollment and at 5 wk postpartum. Data from 15 experimental units [8 TRT and 7 CON, with 1,086 (TRT: n = 681; CON: n = 405) observational units (cows)] that received the assigned diet for >1 wk were included. The incidence of milk fever (MF), retained placenta (RP), metritis, hyperketonemia (blood β-hydroxybutyrate >1.2 mmol/L, measured weekly in wk 1 and 2), clinical mastitis within 30 DIM (MAST), displaced abomasum (DA) within 30 d in milk (DIM), purulent vaginal discharge (PVD, assessed once at wk 5), and number of disease events (≥1 or ≥2) were analyzed with logistic regression models with treatment, parity, BCS, and their interactions, accounting for pen-level randomization and clustering of animals within farm with random effects, giving 10 degrees of freedom to test treatment effects. Multiparous cows fed TRT had greater blood calcium between 1 and 4 DIM than multiparous cows fed CON, and the prevalence of subclinical hypocalcemia (total Ca ≤2.14 mmol/L) was lesser when fed TRT compared with CON (d 1: 73 ± 6% vs. 93 ± 4%; d 2: 65 ± 7% vs. 90 ± 5%), with no differences between treatments detected in primiparous cows. We detected interactions of treatment and BCS at enrollment for MF in multiparous cows and of treatment and parity for ≥2 disease events. Overconditioned (BCS ≥3.75) multiparous cows had reduced incidence of MF when fed TRT (TRT: 2 ± 1%, vs. CON: 13 ± 8%). We detected no treatment effects on RP, metritis, hyperketonemia, or PVD incidence. Cows fed TRT had lesser incidence of DA (1.7 ± 0.7% vs. 3.6 ± 1.6%) and tended to have lesser incidence of MAST compared with CON (1.8% ± 0.6% vs. 4.4 ± 1.4%). No treatment effect was detected on ≥1 disease events (TRT: 38 ± 7%, vs. CON: 42 ± 8%); however, multiparous cows on TRT were less likely to have ≥2 disease events than cows on CON (14 ± 4% vs. 23 ± 6%). Our objective was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) prepartum diets on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling. Cows from 4 commercial farms in Ontario, Canada were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm) with cows 3 wk before calving were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD (TRT; -108 mEq/kg of dry matter; target urine pH 6.0-6.5) or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of dry matter with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period), and then switched to the other treatment for the next period (4 periods per farm). Data from 15 experimental units (8 pen treatments in TRT and 7 in CON), with a total of 1,086 observational units (cows), were included. The effect of treatment on milk yield at the first 3 milk recording tests of lactation was assessed with linear regression models accounting for repeated measures. The risk of pregnancy at first artificial insemination and culling by 30, 60, and 305 d in milk (DIM) were analyzed with logistic regression models, and effects on time to first AI, pregnancy, and culling were assessed with Cox proportional hazards models. All models included treatment, parity, and their interactions, accounting for pen-level randomization and clustering of animals within farm with random effects, giving 10 degrees of freedom for treatment effects. Multiparous cows fed TRT produced more milk at the first (42.0 vs. 38.8 ± 1.2 kg/d) and second (44.2 vs. 41.7 ± 1.3 kg/d) milk tests. However, multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have 0.2 percentage units less milk fat content at these tests. Although multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have greater energy-corrected milk at the first test (least squares means ± standard error: TRT = 46.1 ± 0.9 vs. CON = 43.8 ± 1 kg/d), there were no differences observed in energy-corrected milk at the second or third tests. In primiparous cows, there was no effect of treatment on milk production. Multiparous cows fed TRT had greater pregnancy to first insemination (TRT = 42 ± 3 vs. CON = 32 ± 4%) and tended to have shorter time to pregnancy [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.20; 95% CI: 0.96-1.49]. In primiparous cows fed TRT, time to pregnancy was increased (HR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.59-0.99). Culling by 30 DIM tended to be less in TRT (3.3 ± 1.1%) than CON (5.5 ± 1.8%). No effect of treatment on culling by 305 DIM was detected in primiparous cows, but in multiparous cows, the TRT diets decreased the odds of culling (21.3 ± 1.9 vs. 31.7 ± 2.8%) and daily risk of culling to 305 DIM (HR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.89). Under commercial herd conditions, prepartum negative DCAD diets improved milk production and reproductive performance, and reduced culling risk in multiparous cows. In primiparous cows, TRT diets had no effect on milk yield or culling, but increased the time to pregnancy. This narrative literature review summarizes findings regarding the associations of clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia with postpartum health, reproduction, and milk production. To better understand the effects of hypocalcemia, we reviewed clinical and subclinical presentations of the condition and the dynamics of blood Ca concentration in the early postpartum period. We summarize and discuss the associations between hypocalcemia and performance of dairy cows. Up to 50% of dairy cows suffer from at least one disease event in the transition period. The important roles of calcium in muscle contraction and immune function make it a key component of metabolism, inflammation, and defense against infection. Although the effect of clinical hypocalcemia (milk fever) on health and performance is clear, the definition of subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) and its consequences for health and performance are still ambiguous. Differences in study designs, sampling protocols, Ca concentration thresholds, and sample sizes that may be underpowered for health and reproduction outcomes lead to inconsistent conclusions on the effects of SCH. On current evidence, classification of SCH should be based on at least 2 measurements of blood calcium, using cutpoints supported with relevant data, which may vary depending on the outcome of interest. Arbitrary or poorly supported interpretative thresholds for blood Ca concentrations should be abandoned. Transient SCH appears to be associated with greater milk yield, whereas SCH that is present several days after calving is associated with lesser production and greater disease risk. However, when blood calcium is measured days after calving, primary effects of calcium metabolism may be confounded by feed intake, inflammation, or disease, which might either contribute to or be a consequence of hypocalcemia.
