1. Using self-affirmation to increase intellectual humility in debate

Abstract: Intellectual humility, which entails openness to other views and a willingness to listen and engage with them, is crucial for facilitating civil dialogue and progress in debate between opposing sides. In the present research, we tested whether intellectual humility can be reliably detected in discourse and experimentally increased by a prior self-affirmation task. Three hundred and three participants took part in 116 audio- and video-recorded group discussions. Blind to condition, linguists coded participants' discourse to create an intellectual humility score. As expected, the self-affirmation task increased the coded intellectual humility, as well as participants’ self-rated prosocial affect (e.g. empathy). Unexpectedly, the effect on prosocial affect did not mediate the link between experimental condition and intellectual humility in debate. Self-reported intellectual humility and other personality variables were uncorrelated with expert-coded intellectual humility. Implications of these findings for understanding the social psychological mechanisms underpinning intellectual humility are considered.

3. Well-being as a function of person-country fit in human values

Abstract: Resumo Dois estudos (N = 457) examinaram as propriedades psicométricas da versão reduzida do Questionário de Necessidade de Emoções (Need for Affect Questionnaire: NAQ-S) no contexto brasileiro. No primeiro estudo, uma análise de componentes principais indicou uma estrutura bifatorial, com cinco itens cada: aproximação (α = 0,70) e evitação (α = 0,75). Confirmou-se essa estrutura no segundo estudo (GFI = 0,92; CFI = 0,90), mostrando-se invariante quanto ao sexo. Para verificar os correlatos do NAQ-S, utilizou-se, nos dois estudos, medidas que visam avaliar os valores humanos, a solidão e a necessidade de pertença, além dos cinco fatores da personalidade no segundo estudo. Os resultados demonstraram que uma maior necessidade de emoção foi associada com maior extroversão, maiores escores em valores de experimentação e interativos, e escores mais baixos de solidão. Os estudos apresentam suporte de validade do NAQ-S no Brasil, mostrando sua utilidade para fins de pesquisa.

5. Timing rather than user traits mediates mood sampling on smartphones

Abstract: Abstract Objective Recent years have seen an increasing number of studies using smartphones to sample participants’ mood states. Moods are usually collected by asking participants for their current mood or for a recollection of their mood states over a specific period of time. The current study investigates the reasons to favour collecting mood through current or daily mood surveys and outlines design recommendations for mood sampling using smartphones based on these findings. These recommendations are also relevant to more general smartphone sampling procedures. Results N=64 participants completed a series of surveys at the beginning and end of the study providing information such as gender, personality, or smartphone addiction score. Through a smartphone application, they reported their current mood 3 times and daily mood once per day for 8 weeks. We found that none of the examined intrinsic individual qualities had an effect on matches of current and daily mood reports. However timing played a significant role: the last followed by the first reported current mood of the day were more likely to match the daily mood. Current mood surveys should be preferred for a higher sampling accuracy, while daily mood surveys are more suitable if compliance is more important.

7. An Empirical Comparison of Human Value Models

Abstract: Over the past century, various value models have been proposed. To determine which value model best predicts prosocial behavior, mental health, and pro-environmental behavior, we subjected seven value models to a hierarchical regression analysis. A sample of University students (N = 271) completed the Portrait Value Questionnaire (Schwartz et al., 2012), the Basic Value Survey (Gouveia et al., 2008), and the Social Value Orientation scale (Van Lange et al., 1997). Additionally, they completed the Values Survey Module (Hofstede and Minkov, 2013), Inglehart’s (1977) materialism–postmaterialism items, the Study of Values, fourth edition (Allport et al., 1960; Kopelman et al., 2003), and the Rokeach (1973) Value Survey. However, because the reliability of the latter measures was low, only the PVQ-RR, the BVS, and the SVO where entered into our analysis. Our results provide empirical evidence that the PVQ-RR is the strongest predictor of all three outcome variables, explaining variance above and beyond the other two instruments in almost all cases. The BVS significantly predicted prosocial and pro-environmental behavior, while the SVO only explained variance in pro-environmental behavior.

8. Cross-Cultural Differences and Similarities in Human Value Instantiation

Abstract: Previous research found that the within-country variability of human values (e.g., equality and helpfulness) clearly outweighs between-country variability. Across three countries (Brazil, India, and the United Kingdom), the present research tested in student samples whether between-nation differences reside more in the behaviors used to concretely instantiate (i.e., exemplify or understand) values than in their importance as abstract ideals. In Study 1 (N = 630), we found several meaningful between-country differences in the behaviors that were used to concretely instantiate values, alongside high within-country variability. In Study 2 (N = 677), we found that participants were able to match instantiations back to the values from which they were derived, even if the behavior instantiations were spontaneously produced only by participants from another country or were created by us. Together, these results support the hypothesis that people in different nations can differ in the behaviors that are seen as typical as instantiations of values, while holding similar ideas about the abstract meaning of the values and their importance.

Abstract: Objective: Extant research mostly treats values as being stable over time. Our research examined how people perceive values over time and whether or not these perceptions reflect motivational tensions between theoretically opposing values. We also assessed the viability of examining values over time to predict well-being and future intentions.Method: Four studies (N = 934) asked participants to report their values across past, present, and future settings. These temporal trajectories were analyzed across the four types of higher-order values: self-transcendence, self-enhancement, openness, and conservation. Studies 3 and 4 assessed associations with well-being. Study 4 assessed associations with self-reported behavior over time.Results: Across all four studies, participants perceived their values as being dynamic over time. Younger participants' trajectories did not reflect the motivational conflicts typically reported in values research, but Study 4 showed potential awareness in older age groups. Variability in temporal values correlated with well-being, particularly for openness values. Future values predicted future intentions, even when controlling for present values.Conclusion: This novel method of examining values provides new understanding into how people perceive the pursuit of values over time. Additionally, we show two ways that a temporal values measure can offer new insights into well-being and future intentions.

Abstract: Introduction: Systemic inflammatory response in individuals with cancer is related to a progressive reduction in total body mass, especially lean mass. Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the association between nutritional status and systemic inflammatory response in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methodology: A case series study was carried out involving 30 male and female adults and elderly patients with no prior treatment sent consecutively for surgery. Nutritional status was assessed using subjective and objective methods. Inflammatory response and prognosis were assessed through the determination of C-reactive protein (CRP), the Glasgow Prognostic Score and CRP/albumin ratio. Results: High prevalence values were found for systemic inflammation (73%), a greater risk of infectious and/or inflammatory complication (43%) and worse prognosis (50%). The percentage of weight loss was correlated with serum CRP (r = 0.38; p < 0.05) and the CRP/albumin ratio (r = 0.44; p < 0.05). Inflammation markers and prognosis were negatively correlated with serum albumin (r= -0.50; p < 0.05), body mass index (r = -0.39; p < 0.05) and total lymphocyte count (r= -0.37; p < 0.05). Patients with weight loss and malnourishment had significantly higher serum CRP and CRP/albumin ratio values as well as lower serum albumin levels in comparison to those without weight loss and in well-nourished. Conclusion: Nutritional status is related to inflammation markers and prognosis in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. The diagnosis and attenuation of systemic inflammation should be part of the nutritional care of these patients.Introducción: En los individuos con cáncer, la respuesta inflamatoria sistémica es relacionada a la progresiva disminución de la masa corpórea total, principalmente de la masa magra. Objetivo: Verificar la relación entre el estado nutricional y la actividad inflamatoria sistémica en pacientes con cáncer del trato gastrointestinal. Metodología: estudio tipo serie de casos, envolviendo 30 pacientes adultos y ancianos de ambos sexos, sin tratamiento anterior, enviados consecutivamente para cirugía. El estado nutricional fue evaluado por métodos subjetivo y objetivo, y la actividad inflamatoria y el pronóstico por medio de proteína C-reactiva (PCR), Puntuación Pronóstico de Glasgow (GPS) y Relación Proteína C-reactiva/ albumina. Resultados: Se verificó elevada prevalencia de pacientes con inflamación sistémica (73%), mayor riesgo de complicación infecciosa y/o inflamatoria (43%) y peor pronóstico (50%). El porcentual de pérdida de peso se correlacionó con la PCR seria (r = 0,38; p < 0,05) y la relación PCR/albumina (r = 0,44; p < 0,05). Hubo correlación negativa de la albumina sérica (r= -0,50; p < 0,05), del Índice de Masa Corporal (r = -0,39; p < 0,05) y del Cómputo Total de Linfocitos (r = -0,37; p < 0,05) con los marcadores de inflamación y pronóstico. Los pacientes con pérdida de peso y desnutridos presentaban valores significativamente mayores de PCR sérica y relación PCR/ albumina, y menores de albumina sérica cuando comparados con aquellos sin pérdida de peso y eutróficos. Conclusión: El estado nutricional es relacionado con los marcadores de inflamación y pronóstico. Se sugiere que el diagnóstico y la atenuación de la inflamación sistémica sean parte del cuidado nutricional de estos pacientes.

Abstract: Pathological personality traits are an important inhibitor of social functioning and well-being. Individual human values also possess important connections to both personality and well-being, but the links between human values and pathological personality traits have not been directly examined. Across two studies (N = 478), we provide the first direct examination of these relations by employing linear and sinusoidal methodologies assessing relations between Schwartz's circular model of human values (Schwartz, 1992) and a series of personality measures, including the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 (e.g., Callousness, Intimacy avoidance, Rigid perfectionism). Data for Study 1 was collected in Germany and data for Study 2 in the UK. Self-transcendence values buffer against several pathological personality traits that constrain psychological well-being (e.g., callousness). Conversely, self-enhancement values (which are motivationally opposite to self-transcendence values in Schwartz's circular model of human values) were positively associated with these personality traits. Several pathological personality traits were related to the 10 value types in a sinusoidal waveform that was consistent with Schwartz's circular model of human values. Findings were overall consistent across samples from both countries. The results help us move closer to distinguishing between different processes underpinning the associations between personality traits and human values.

Abstract: The present research provides the first direct assessment of the fit of diverse behaviors to putatively related personal and social values from Schwartz’s theory. Across three studies, we examined spatial representations of value-related behaviors that were explicitly derived from people’s mental representations of the values. Participants were asked how similar the behaviors were to each other and various values, and these judgments were used to specify multidimensional scaling solutions. The results indicated that the spatial representation of the behaviors was consistent with the two-dimensional space described in Schwartz’s model of values, although several deviations occurred. For example, self-enhancement behaviors were widely spread, indicating more variation in the way individuals interpret these behaviors, which are often associated with other value types. These data provide evidence that a range of behaviors can at least partly be reduced to underlying motivations expressed by values. Furthermore, our findings indicate that behaviors are often expressed by several values, which might help to explain why value–behavior associations in previous studies were weak. Finally, they illustrate a new approach to learning which behaviors might relate to multiple values.

13. Social Values as Arguments: Similar is Convincing

Abstract: Politicians, philosophers, and rhetors engage in co-value argumentation: appealing to one value in order to support another value (e.g., equality leads to freedom). Across four experiments in the United Kingdom and India, we found that the psychological relatedness of values affects the persuasiveness of the arguments that bind them. Experiment 1 found that participants were more persuaded by arguments citing values that fulfilled similar motives than by arguments citing opposing values. Experiments 2 and 3 replicated this result using a wider variety of values, while finding that the effect is stronger among people higher in need for cognition and that the effect is mediated by the greater plausibility of co-value arguments that link motivationally compatible values. Experiment 4 extended the effect to real-world arguments taken from political propaganda and replicated the mediating effect of argument plausibility. The findings highlight the importance of value relatedness in argument persuasiveness.

Such initiatives raise a key theoretical and applied question that has yet to be addressed directly: Does the salience of children increase prosocial motivation and behavior in adults? We present findings aggregated across eight experiments involving 2,054 adult participants: Prosocial values became more important after completing tasks that made children salient compared to tasks that made adults (or a mundane event) salient or compared to a no-task baseline. An additional field study showed that adults were more likely to donate money to a child-unrelated cause when children were more salient on a shopping street. The findings suggest broad, reliable interconnections between human mental representations of children and prosocial motives, as the child salience effect was not moderated by participants' gender, age, attitudes, or contact with children. 10 p.

15. Measured and manipulated effects of value similarity on prejudice and well-being

Abstract: We review recent research investigating the effect of shared human values on personal and social outcomes. Using more precise methods than past research, cross-sectional and experimental evidence suggests that well-being and prejudice are predicted by the extent to which people’s values align (or are perceived to align) with those of other people around them. Importantly, this research shows that these effects depend on the type of values being considered and are more nuanced than prior research suggests. For example, well-being is higher among individuals who perceive their fellow citizens to share their values of power and achievement. Prejudice against immigrants is higher among individuals who value conservation more but perceive immigrants to value openness. Moreover, experimentally highlighting actual value similarities rather than mean differences improves attitudes towards outgroups. We discuss how future studies can improve our understanding of value similarity effects and their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract: There has been surprisingly little examination of how recall performance is affected by processing demands induced by retrieval cues, how manipulations at encoding interact with processing demands during maintenance or due to the retrieval cue, and how these are affected with aging. Here, we investigate these relationships by examining the fidelity of working memory recall across two delayed reproduction tasks with a continuous measure of report across the adult lifespan. Participants were asked to remember and subsequently reproduce from memory the identity and location of a probed item from the encoding display. In Experiment 1, we examined the effect of filtering irrelevant information at encoding and the impact of filtering distracting information at retrieval simultaneously. In Experiment 2, we tested how ignoring distracting information during maintenance or updating current contents with new information during this period affects recall. The results reveal that manipulating processing requirements induced by retrieval cues (by altering the nature of the retrieval foil) had a significant impact on memory recall: the presence of two previously viewed features from the encoding display in the retrieval foil led to a decrease in identification accuracy. Although irrelevant information can be filtered out well at encoding, both ignoring irrelevant information and updating the contents of memory during the maintenance delay had a detrimental effect on recall. These effects were similar across the lifespan, but older individuals were particularly affected by manipulations of processing demands at encoding as well as increasing set size of information to be retained in memory. Finally, analyses revealed that there were no systematic relationships between filtering performance at encoding, maintenance and retrieval suggesting that these processing demands are independent of each other. Rather than filtering being a single, monolithic entity, the data suggest that it is better accounted for as distinctly dissociable cognitive processes that engage and articulate with different phases of working memory.

17. Cancro do Pulmão e Tabagismo Passivo

Abstract: RESUMO: A associação entre tabagismo passivo e cancro do pulmão tem adquirido grande importância social e política. Vários estudos epidemiológicos, centrandose sobretudo na exposição ao fumo do tabaco do conjuge, têm demonstrado esta relação. Com o objectivo de determinar a existência de um efeito positivo do fumo do tabaco do ambiente, analisando a exposição durante a infância, a exposição ao conjuge e outros membros do agregado familiar, e ainda da exposição em veículos, lugares públicos e no ambiente profissional, realizámos um estudo caso-controle, integrado num projecto multicêntrico. Estudámos 38 doentes com cancro do pulmão confirmado histologica-mente e que nunca tinham fumado e 67 controlos, igualmente não fumadores. Os resultados obtidos, mostram que os doentes com cancro do pulmão tem maior exposição ao fumo de tabaco quer durante a infincia quer durante a vida adulta. Por outro lado, apenas a exposição relativa ao fumo do tabaco do conjuge tinha significado estatistico, duplicando o risco de cancro do pulmão quando os níveis de exposição eram superiores a 5000 cigarros fumados («odds ratio», 3.10; 95% de intervalo de confiança, 1.09-13.09). Apesar dos nossos dados necessitarem de integração no estudo multicêntrico para serem mais conclusivos, mostram uma relação entre a exposição ao tabagismo passivo do conjuge e o cancro de pulmão em não fumadores. ABSTRACT: The association between passive smoking and lung cancer has reached a big political and social impact. A number of epidemiological studies, mainly dealing with exposure to tobacco smoke from the spouse, have shown this relationship. With the aim to determine the existence of a positive effect of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), analysing exposure during childhood, to the spouse and other relatives, and also exposure inside vehicles, public places and at work, we performed a case-control study included in a broader multicentric project. We studied 38 non-smoker patients with hystologically confirmed lung cancer and 67 non-smoker controls. Results show that patients with lung cancer have greater exposure to ETS during childhood and adulthood. Moreover, only the exposure to the spouse reached statistical significance, doupling the risk for lung cancer when exposure levels were above 5000 cigarrettes smoked (Odds ratio, 3,1: 95% CI,1.09-13.09). Although our data deserve to be included in the whole multicentric study to become more conclusive, they show a relationship between ETS from the spouse and lung cancer in nonsmokers. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic poses an exceptional challenge for humanity. Because public behaviour is key to curbing the pandemic at an early stage, it is important for social psychological researchers to use their knowledge to promote behaviours that help manage the crisis. Here, we identify human values as particularly important in driving both behavioural compliance to government guidelines and promoting prosocial behaviours to alleviate the strains arising from a prolonged pandemic. Existing evidence demonstrates the importance of human values, and the extent to which they are shared by fellow citizens, for tackling the COVID-19 crisis. Individuals who attach higher importance to self-transcendence (e.g., responsibility) and conservation (e.g., security) values are likely to be more compliant with COVID-19 behavioural guidelines and to help others who are struggling with the crisis. Further, believing that fellow citizens share one's values has been found to elicit a sense of connectedness that may be crucial in promoting collective efforts to contain the pandemic. The abstract nature of values, and cross-cultural agreement on their importance, suggests that they are ideally suited to developing and tailoring effective, global interventions to combat this pandemic.

Abstract: Arieli, Sagiv, and Roccas’s lead article provides a timely and important review of the role of individual values and their role in organisations. At the same time as identifying several key areas of progress, the review identifies significant gaps. In this commentary, we focus on additional gaps that merit attention. In particular, we highlight a need for greater theoretical clarity in the literature about the concrete ways in which values are instantiated in different organisational contexts, roles, and cultural settings. We argue that the growing importance of values in studies of organisational contexts would be well-served by more precision in how they are conceptualised and operationalised in studies of organisational behaviour.

Abstract: People often make inferences about the values of other people in their families, cities, and countries, but there are reasons to expect systematic biases in these inferences. Across four studies ( N = 1,763), we examined people’s perceptions of the values of their families, fellow citizens of the cities in which they live, and compatriots across three nations (Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom). Our results show that people systematically misperceive comparison groups’ values. People underestimate the importance that their compatriots ascribe to more important values and overestimate the importance of less important values. This occurs in comparison with their own values, the actual values of the people living in the same city and the actual values of their compatriots. The effect sizes were medium to large. Furthermore, the results occurred independently of participants’ culture, time spent in the culture, and the underlying value model used. These results consistently show that people’s speculations about values in their community and society are biased in a self- and family favoring direction. In addition, we found that the structure of values (e.g., as proposed by Schwartz) holds for perceived family, fellow citizens of the cities in which they live, and compatriots’ values. Overall, our findings suggest that the values of other people are more selfless than is often believed.

Abstract: Previous research found that the within-country variability of human values (e.g., equality and helpfulness) clearly outweighs between-country variability. Across three countries (Brazil, India, and the United Kingdom), the present research tested in student samples whether between-nation differences reside more in the behaviors used to concretely instantiate (i.e., exemplify or understand) values than in their importance as abstract ideals. In Study 1 (N = 630), we found several meaningful between-country differences in the behaviors that were used to concretely instantiate values, alongside high within-country variability. In Study 2 (N = 677), we found that participants were able to match instantiations back to the values from which they were derived, even if the behavior instantiations were spontaneously produced only by participants from another country or were created by us. Together, these results support the hypothesis that people in different nations can differ in the behaviors that are seen as typical as instantiations of values, while holding similar ideas about the abstract meaning of the values and their importance.

Abstract: We propose a short and ultrashort version of the vengeance scale (Stuckless & Goranson, 1992). Across three samples, good psychometric properties and convergent validity for the new scales were found. Study 1 found in a Brazilian sample that the original 20 items can be reduced to both a 10 and 5 item version (VS-10 and VS-5), without losing psychometric quality. In Study 2, the one-factorial structure was confirmed in a Brazilian and a British sample. Also, (partial) measurement invariance was established across gender and countries for the VS-10, but not for the VS-5. Across both samples, the short-versions correlated as expected with the Big-5, Big-6, and Dark Triad. Overall, the 10- and 5-item versions of the vengeance scale exhibited comparable reliabilities and validities to the full version.

Abstract: Motivational interdependence is an organizing principle in Schwartz’s (1992) circumplex model of social values, which has received abundant cross-cultural support (Schwartz et al., 2012). We used fMRI to test whether motivational relations between social values predict different brain responses in a situation of choice between values. We hypothesized that differences in brain responses would become evident when the more important value had to be selected in pairs of congruent (e.g., wealth and success) as opposed to incongruent (e.g., curiosity and stability) values as they are described in Schwartz’s model, because the former serve mutually facilitating motives, whereas the latter serve mutually inhibiting motives. Consistent with the model, choosing between congruent values led to longer response times and more activation in conflict-related brain regions (e.g., the supplementary motor area, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) than selecting between incongruent values. These results provide novel neural evidence supporting the circumplex model’s predictions about motivational interdependence between social values. In particular, our results show that the neural networks underlying social values are organized in a way that allows activation patterns related to motivational similarity between congruent values to be dissociated from those related to incongruent values.

Abstract: International audience; The influence of competition level on referees' decision-making was investigated. Referees' decisions in 90 handball games (30 games X 3 competition levels) were observed in different situations related to the advantage rule, and 100 referees from two different levels of expertise were subsequently asked to offer explanations for the competition-level effects from the first part of the study. Results revealed that at the highest level of competition referees intervened less frequently with sporting sanctions, but more frequently with disciplinary sanctions. These effects were apparent mainly in immediate intervention situations and unsuccessful advantage situations, but not in successful situations. Referees explained these effects of competition level in terms of a player competence stereotype, in addition to referees' different expertise across competition level. The implications of the findings for understanding how status-related stereotypes impact on intervention behavior are discussed.

Abstract: Three studies tested whether individualism-collectivism moderates the extent to\ud which values are endorsed as ideal self-guides and ought self-guides, and the\ud consequences for regulatory focus and emotion. Across Studies 1 and 2,\ud individualists endorsed values that are relatively central to the self as\ud stronger ideals than oughts, whereas collectivists endorsed them as ideals and\ud oughts to a similar degree. Study 2 found that individualists justified central\ud values using reasons that were more promotion focused than prevention focused,\ud whereas collectivists used similar amount of prevention-focused and\ud promotion-focused reasons. In Study 3, individualists felt more dejected after\ud violating a central (vs. peripheral) value and more agitated after violating a\ud peripheral (vs. central) value. Collectivists felt a similar amount of dejection \ud regardless of values centrality and more agitation after violating central (vs.\ud peripheral) values. Overall, culture has important implications for how we\ud regulate values that are central or peripheral to our self-concept.

28. Sensitivity to reward and punishment: associations with diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking

Abstract: This study examined whether sensitivity to reward predicts a range of potentially health-damaging behaviours. Secondary objectives were to explore the relationship between these behaviours and sensitivity to punishment. Sensitivity to reward and punishment were assessed among 184 individuals using questionnaire measures of Behavioural Approach System (BAS) and Behavioural Inhibition System (BIS) sensitivity. Participants also completed a food frequency questionnaire and measures of alcohol consumption and smoking. Higher BAS sensitivity predicted higher fat intake, higher alcohol consumption, greater likelihood of binge drinking, greater likelihood of being a smoker and, amongst smokers, smoking frequency. Higher BIS sensitivity predicted lower alcohol consumption but higher sugar intake. Thus, sensitivity to reward appears to be a risk factor for lifestyle behaviours that contribute to poor health. Whilst BIS sensitivity seems to offer some protection with respect to alcohol intake, the results suggest that this does not extend to health-related behaviours, in which the negative consequences may be less immediate. Instead, BIS sensitivity predicted higher sugar intake. This is consistent with the view that BIS sensitivity leads to higher anxiety, which individuals may attempt to regulate by indulging in sugary foods.

Abstract: Leadership is one of the most examined factors in relation to understanding employee well-being and performance. While there are disparate approaches to studying leadership, they share a common assumption that perceptions of a leaderâ€™s behavior determine reactions to the leader. The concept of leadership perception is poorly understood in most theoretical approaches. To address this, we propose that there are many benefits from examining leadership perceptions as an attitude towards the leader. In this review, we show how research examining a number of aspects of attitudes (content, structure and function) can advance understanding of leadership perceptions and how these affect work-related outcomes. Such a perspective provides a more multi-faceted understanding of leadership perceptions than previously envisaged and this can provide a more detailed understanding of how such perceptions affect outcomes. In addition, we examine some of the main theoretical and methodological implications of viewing leadership perceptions as attitudes to the wider leadership area. The cross-fertilization of research from the attitudes literature to understanding leadership perceptions provides new insights into leadership processes and potential avenues for further research.

O papel central do fígado no metabolismo dos substratos energéticos e de proteínas e aminoácidos é revisto, de modo relacionado à desnutrição protéico-energética, em pacientes com hepatopatia crônica. Aceita-se que a redução da ingestão dietética seja um dos principais componentes etiológicos da desnutrição, particularmente em pacientes alcoolistas. Acresce-se a iatrogenia pela indicação de dietas restritas e jejum prolongado aos pacientes hospitalizados. Como fatores agravantes, há má absorção intestinal de gorduras e o hipermetabolismo associado ao alcoolismo agudo. Hipoglicemia, resistência insulínica, esteatose e hipertrigliceridemia constituem achados comuns, assim como níveis elevados de alguns aminoácidos com conseqüências neurológicas. O entendimento desses mecanismos fisiopatológicos permite a intervenção nutricional apropriada reduzindo a morbidade e mortalidade desses pacientes. Liver chronic pathologies often courses with metabolic abnormalities of macronutrients leading to or aggravating a protein-energy malnutrition status. This review raised the major pathophysiologycal mechanisms related to the protein-energy malnutrition in chronic liver patients. By large the reduced dietary intake is the most accepted cause particularly among alcoholic patients. Moreover during the treatment prevails the iatrogenic anorexia by unpalatable (restricted) diets interpolated with long-lasting fastings of hospitalyzed patients. Intestinal fat malabsorption is a common finding whereas hypermetabolism can be found associated with an acute alcoholism. Hipoglycemia or insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia and liver steatosis are common findings as well as lower plasma proteins along with higher levels of ammonia, aromatic and sulfer amino acids leading to neurological outcomes. The knowledge of these metabolic changes allow proper dietary interventions toward reduced morbi-mortality of those patients. Abstract: Human values and affective traits were found to predict attitudes toward the use of different types of drugs (e.g., alcohol, marijuana, and other illegal drugs). In this study (N = 196, Mage = 23.09), we aimed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of those predictors of attitudes toward drug use in a mediated structural equation model, providing a better overview of a possible motivational path that drives to such a risky behavior. Specifically, we predicted and found that the relations between need for affect and attitudes toward drug use were mediated by excitement values. Also, results showed that excitement values and need for affect positively predicted attitudes toward the use of drugs, whereas normative values predicted it negatively. The pattern of results remained the same when we investigated attitudes toward alcohol, marijuana, or illegal drugs separately. Abstract: International audience; The influence of player gender on referees' decision making was experimentally investigated. In Experiment 1, including 145 male handball referees, we investigated (a) the influence of referees' level of expertise on their decisional biases against women and (b) the referees' gender stereotypes. Results revealed that biases against women were powerful regardless of the referees' level of expertise and that male referees' stereotype toward female players tends to be negative. In Experiment 2, including 115 sport science students, we examined the influence of the participants' gender, motivation to control bias, and time constraints on gender bias. Results indicated that participants' gender had no impact on gender bias and that participants were able to reduce this bias in conditions in which they were motivated to control the bias.

Abstract: The reconstruction of photons in the ATLAS detector is studied with data taken during the 2004 Combined Test Beam, where a full slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to beams of particles of known energy at the CERN SPS. The results presented show significant differences in the longitudinal development of the electromagnetic shower between converted and unconverted photons as well as in the total measured energy. The potential to use the reconstructed converted photons as a means to precisely map the material of the tracker in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter is also considered. All results obtained are compared with a detailed Monte-Carlo simulation of the test-beam setup which is based on the same simulation and reconstruction tools as those used for the ATLAS detector itself.

Abstract: A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20GeV and 180GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale. © 2011 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration, published under license by IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

The results indicated that referees make more lenient decisions toward male players when administering sporting sanctions, but more severe decisions toward male players when administering disciplinary sanctions, depending on whether or not the players were able to succeed in their action despite the foul. The findings are congruent with the hypothesis that referees use player gender as a judgmental heuristic. We suggest that further experimental studies examining the effects of referee gender and level of expertise, and of level of competition are needed to better understand the extent and limits of referees’ use of player gender as a decision-making heuristic.

Abstract: A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudo-rapidity values in the range 0.20.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit. © 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: In 2004 at the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) combined test beam, one slice of the ATLAS barrel detector (including an Inner Detector set-up and the Liquid Argon calorimeter) was exposed to particles from the H8 SPS beam line at CERN. It was the first occasion to test the combined electron performance of ATLAS. This paper presents results obtained for the momentum measurement p with the Inner Detector and for the performance of the electron measurement with the LAr calorimeter (energy E linearity and resolution) in the presence of a magnetic field in the Inner Detector for momenta ranging from 20 GeV/c to 100 GeV/c. Furthermore the particle identification capabilities of the Transition Radiation Tracker, Bremsstrahlungs-recovery algorithms relying on the LAr calorimeter and results obtained for the E/p ratio and a way how to extract scale parameters will be discussed. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

We tested whether this bias also occurs at a higher, national level of competition, despite the greater pressures for objectivity and fairness at this level. Referees' decisions were examined in 15 national-level handball matches between women and 15 national-level handball matches between men after transgressions that varied in severity. The results suggest that referees made harsher decisions in female than in male matches. Although more research is needed, this study supported the hypothesis that referees may use the gender of players as a powerful judgmental heuristic for deciding how to respond to aggression.

Abstract: A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The stereotype content model (SCM) proposes potentially universal principles of societal stereotypes and their relation to social structure. Here, the SCM reveals theoretically grounded, cross-cultural, cross-groups similarities and one difference across 10 non-US nations. Seven European (individualist) and three East Asian (collectivist) nations (N 1⁄4 1; 028) support three hypothesized cross-cultural similarities: (a) perceived warmth and competence reliably differentiate societal group stereotypes; (b) many out-groups receive ambivalent stereotypes (high on one dimension; low on the other); and (c) high status groups stereotypically are competent, whereas competitive groups stereotypically lack warmth. Data uncover one consequential cross-cultural difference: (d) the more collectivist cultures do not locate reference groups (in-groups and societal prototype groups) in the most positive cluster (high-competence/high-warmth), unlike individualist cultures. This demonstrates out-group derogation without obvious reference-group favouritism. The SCM can serve as a pancultural tool for predicting group stereotypes from structural relations with other groups in society, and comparing across societies. Abstract: We propose two fundamentally different motives for helping: gaining pleasure and fulfilling one’s duty (‘‘pressure’’). Using the newly developed pleasure and pressure based prosocial motivation scale, we demonstrated the distinctiveness of pleasure and pressure based prosocial motivation in three studies. Although the two motives exhibited different relations to a variety of personality characteristics, they were similarly related to trans-situational helping. Of particular interest, pleasure based prosocial motivation was positively related to self-actualization, self-esteem, life satisfaction, and positive affect and negatively related to negative affect. On the contrary, pressure based prosocial motivation was unrelated to self-actualization, self-esteem, life satisfaction, and positive affect but positively related to negative affect. These results qualify research showing that prosocial life goals generally increase subjective well-being.

Abstract: A field experiment provided the first test of the hypothesis that intergroup attitudes within a nation predict the group members' attitudes toward the break-up of the nation. Prior to a referendum on the devolution of power from Britain to Wales, Welsh (minority) and English (majority) participants indicated their attitudes towards each other and towards devolution. As expected, there were significant correlations between intergroup attitudes and attitudes towards devolution, and these relations were different for Welsh vs. English participants. English respondents who held more positive attitudes towards Welsh people were significantly more favourable toward devolution, whereas Welsh respondents who held more positive attitudes towards English people were significantly less favourable towards devolution. A subsequent laboratory experiment provided a conceptual replication of this result, using manipulations of majority vs. minority status and of intergroup attitudes towards potentially devolving groups in psychology. These findings demonstrate that intergroup attitudes are highly relevant to understanding attitudes regarding devolution.

45. Bringing Hope to Improve Treatment in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma-A New Tool for Molecular Profiling of KRAS Mutations in Tumor and Plasma Samples.

Abstract: Background/objectives: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) incidence is rising, and prognosis remains poor due to late diagnosis and limited effective therapies. Currently, patients are treated based on TNM staging, without molecular tumor characterization. This study aimed to validate a technique that combines the amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) with high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) for detecting mutations in codon 12 of KRAS in tumor and plasma, and to assess its prognostic value., Methods: Prospective study including patients with newly diagnosed PDAC with tumor and plasma samples collected before treatment. Mutations in codon 12 of KRAS (G12D, G12V, G12C, and G12R) were detected using ARMS-HRMA and compared to Sanger sequencing (SS). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the prognostic significance of these mutations., Results: A total of 88 patients, 93% with ECOG-PS 0-1, 57% with resectable disease. ARMS-HRMA technique showed a higher sensitivity than SS, both in tumor and plasma (77% vs. 51%; 25 vs. 0%, respectively). The most frequent mutation was G12D (n = 32, 36%), followed by G12V (n = 22, 25%). On multivariate analysis, patients with G12D and/or G12C mutations, either in tumor or plasma, had lower PFS (HR 1.792, 95% CI 1.061-3.028, p = 0.029; HR 2.081, 95% CI 1.014-4.272, p = 0.046, respectively) and lower OS (HR 1.757, 95% CI 1.013-3.049, p = 0.045; HR 2.229, 95% CI 1.082-4.594, p = 0.030, respectively)., Conclusions: ARMS-HRMA is a rapid and cost-effective method for detecting KRAS mutations in PDAC patients, offering the potential for stratifying prognosis and guiding treatment decisions. The presence of G12D and G12C mutations in both tumor and plasma is associated with a poorer prognosis.

46. Safety, tolerability, and efficacy outcomes of the Investigation of Levetiracetam in Alzheimer's disease (ILiAD) study: a pilot, double-blind placebo-controlled crossover trial.

Abstract: Objective: To assess whether the antiseizure medication levetiracetam may improve cognition in individuals with Alzheimer's disease who have not previously experienced a seizure., Methods: We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study in individuals with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. Electroencephalography was performed at baseline and those with active epileptiform discharges were excluded. Eligible participants were randomized to placebo for 12 weeks or an active arm of oral levetiracetam (4 weeks up-titration to levetiracetam 500 mg twice daily, 4 weeks maintained on this dose followed by 4 weeks down-titration to nil). Participants then crossed over to the other arm. The primary outcome was change in cognitive function assessed by the Oxford Memory Task, a task sensitive to hippocampal memory binding. Secondary outcomes included tolerability, other neuropsychological scales, and general questionnaires., Results: Recruitment numbers were severely limited owing to restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of the study. Eight participants completed both arms of the study (mean age 68.4 years [SD = 9.2]; 5 females [62.5%]). No participants withdrew from the study and there was no significant difference between reported side effects in the active levetiracetam or placebo arm. Measures of mood and quality of life were also not significantly different between the two arms based on participant or carer reports. In limited data analysis, there was no statistically significant difference between participants in the active levetiracetam and placebo arm on the memory task., Significance: This pilot study demonstrates that levetiracetam was well tolerated in individuals with Alzheimer's disease who do not have a history of seizures and has no detrimental effect on mood or quality of life. Larger studies are needed to assess whether levetiracetam may have a positive effect on cognitive function in subsets of individuals with Alzheimer's disease., Plain Language Summary: Abnormal electrical activity within the brain, such as is seen in seizures, might contribute to memory problems in people with dementia. We completed a clinical trial to see if an antiseizure medication, levetiracetam, could help with memory difficulties in people with Alzheimer's disease (the most common cause of dementia). In this pilot study, we could not prove whether levetiracetam helped memory function. We did show that the drug is safe and well tolerated in people with dementia who have not had a seizure. Abstract: Background: Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents a major comorbidity in the elderly and is associated with cognitive impairment (CoI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this context, there is an increase in oxidative stress and platelet activation biomarkers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of 6 months' treatment with SGLT2i on functional, mood-related, and cognitive aspects, assessed by performing a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), and on oxidative stress and platelet activation biomarkers, in a cohort of HFpEF elderly patients with T2DM. We recruited 150 elderly outpatients (mean age 75.8 ± 7.4 years)., Results: At six-month follow-up, there was a significant improvement in MMSE ( p < 0.0001), MoCA ( p < 0.0001), GDS score ( p < 0.0001), and SPPB ( p < 0.0001). Moreover, we observed a significant reduction in Nox-2 ( p < 0.0001), 8-Isoprostane ( p < 0.0001), Sp-Selectin ( p < 0.0001), and Gp-VI ( p < 0.0001). Considering ΔMMSE as the dependent variable, ΔE/e', ΔNox-2, ΔHOMA, Δ8-Isoprostane, and ΔUricemia were associated for 59.6% with ΔMMSE. When ΔMoCA was considered as the dependent variable, ΔHOMA, ΔE/e', Δ8-Isoprostane, ΔNox-2 and ΔUricemia were associated for 59.2%. Considering ΔGDS as the dependent variable, ΔHOMA, ΔNox-2, Δ8-Isoprostane, and ΔUricemia were associated with 41.6% of ΔGDS variation. Finally, ΔHOMA was the main predictor of ΔSPPB, which was associated with 21.3% with ΔSPPB, Δ8-Isoprostane, ΔNox-2, ΔE/e', and ΔUricemia added another 24.1%., Conclusion: The use of SGLT2i in elderly patients with T2DM and HFpEF significantly contributes to improving CGA scales and biomarkers of OS and PA.

48. Prognostic role of serum albumin levels in patients with chronic heart failure.

Abstract: Background: Hypoalbuminemia is common in heart failure (HF) patients; however, there are no data regarding the possible long-term prognostic role of serum albumin (SA) in the younger population with chronic HF without malnutrition. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term prognostic role of SA levels in predicting major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in middle-aged outpatients with chronic HF., Methods: In the present retrospective analysis, 378 subjects with HF were enrolled. MACE (non-fatal ischemic stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, cardiac revascularization or coronary bypass surgery, and cardiovascular death), total mortality, and HF hospitalizations (hHF) occurrence were evaluated during a median follow-up of 6.1 years., Results: In all population, 152 patients had a SA value < 3.5 g/dL and 226 had a SA value ≥ 3.5 g/dL. In patients with SA ≥ 3.5 g/dL, the observed MACE were 2.1 events/100 patient-year; while in the group with a worse SA levels, there were 7.0 events/100 patient-year (p < 0.001). The multivariate analysis model confirmed that low levels of SA increase the risk of MACE by a factor of 3.1. In addition, the presence of ischemic heart disease, serum uric acid levels > 6.0 mg/dL, chronic kidney disease, and a 10-year age rise, increased the risk of MACE in study participants. Finally, patients with SA < 3.5 g/dl had a higher incidence of hHF (p < 0.001) and total mortality (p < 0.001) than patients with SA ≥ 3.5 g/dl., Conclusions: Patients with chronic HF that exhibits low SA levels show a higher risk of MACE, hHF and total mortality., (© 2024. 50. Gut Permeability and Immune-Mediated Inflammation in Heart Failure.

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is characterized by low-grade immune-mediated inflammation due to increased Toll-like receptor (TLR) expression as response to endotoxin increase and dysregulated gut barrier permeability. We investigated TLR expression and possible gut dysbiosis in HF patients compared to a control group. We enrolled 80 Caucasian HF patients and 20 controls. Low-grade immune-mediated inflammation was evaluated by TLR expression, while gut dysbiosis by the detection of zonulin and bacterial endotoxin activity in a semi-quantitative (endotoxin activity assay [EAA]) and quantitative (limulus amebocyte lysate [LAL] test) way. Compared to controls, patients with HF showed significantly higher age and blood pressure values, worse metabolic profile and kidney function, higher inflammatory biomarkers levels, and lower levels of zonulin and endotoxin activity. When dividing failing patients in those with reduced ejection fraction (HF-rEF) and those with preserved ejection fraction (HF-pEF), HF-rEF patients showed significantly higher values of inflammatory biomarkers and TLR expression than HF-pEF patients. Gut permeability biomarkers inversely correlated with the severity of HF and positively with renal function. eGFR was retained as an independent predictor of zonulin variation in all the three groups of failing patients. Present data work to extend current knowledge about the role of gut microbiota in immune-mediated inflammation in HF.
