Plasmodium vivax causes the largest malaria burden in Brazil, and chloroquine resistance poses a challenge to eliminating malaria by 2035. Illegal mining in the Roraima Yanomami Indigenous territory can lead to the introduction of resistant parasites. This study aimed to investigate mutations in the pvcrt-o and pvmdr-1 genes to determine their potential as predictors of P. vivax chloroquine-resistant phenotypes. Samples were collected in two health centers of Boa Vista. A questionnaire was completed, and blood was drawn from each patient. Then, DNA extraction, PCR, amplicon purification, and DNA sequencing were performed. After alignment with the Sal-1, the amplified fragment was analyzed. Patients infected with the mutant parasites were queried in the Surveillance Information System. Among the patients, 98% (157/164) of participants were from illegal mining areas. The pvcrt-o was sequenced in 151 samples, and the K10 insertion was identified in 13% of them. The pvmdr1 was sequenced in 80 samples, and the MYF haplotype (958M) was detected in 92% of them and the TYF was detected in 8%, while the MYL was absent. No cases of recrudescence, hospitalization, or death were found. Mutations in the pvcrt-o and pvmdr-1 genes have no potential to predict chloroquine resistance in P. vivax. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Most of the shrimp side streams are discarded due to the lack of appropriate processing techniques/methodology for their utilization, which is not only a loss of potentially valuable compounds, but also leads to environmental pollution. The study aimed to employ a mechanical filter press to separate the liquid called press juice (PJ) and the solid named press cake (PC) fraction from shrimp head and shell (H&S). Results: The proximate composition was performed, including amino acids analysis, protein content, fatty acids, and the main volatile compounds. In the whole shrimp (WS), the average values of protein, lipid, dry matter, and ash content were recorded at 14.7%, 2.9%, 21.1%, and 4.8%, respectively. The protein percentage reached 10.1% in H&S, indicating considerable amount of protein leftover in the shrimp side streams (p < 0.05). The major PUFAs in WSs' sample were Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (8.8%) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (7.8%). Furthermore, the values of EPA and DHA a showed nearly two‐folded increase after peeling and filter‐pressing, PC sample. Total amino acids in the WS, H&S, PJ, and PC samples were found to be 94.6, 67.7, 22.2, and 76.6 mg/g, respectively. From the nutritional point of view, non‐essential amino acids represented higher values (13.2%–56.9%) compared to essential amino acids (9.0%–37.6%). The major components of 5′‐neucleoitides in WS sample were in order of guanosine‐5′‐diphosphate (GDP) ≫ hypoxanthine (HYP) > inosine‐5′‐monophosphate (IMP) ≫ adenosine‐5′‐monophosphate (AMP) > adenosine‐5′‐diphosphate (ADP) with values of 684.4, 293.6, 201.4, 25.6 and 16.2 μg/g sample, while no inosine (INO), guanosine‐5′‐monophosphate (GMP), and guanosine‐5′‐triphosphate (GTP) were detected. Equivalent umami concentration (g MSC/100 g) was recorded as 0.63, 0.07 for WS and H&S samples and 0.015 for PJ sample, which indicates a significant drop from the shrimp raw material toward the side streams. Most volatile compounds belonged to alkenes followed by alkanes groups. Conclusion: This work showed the possibility to employ the filter press machine to obtain PJ and PC from shrimp H&S, after peeling processing. We work with polynomial three-dimensional rigid differential systems. Using the Lyapunov constants, we obtain lower bounds for the cyclicity of the known rigid centres on their centre manifolds. Moreover, we obtain an example of a quadratic rigid centre from which is possible to bifurcate 13 limit cycles, which is a new lower bound for three-dimensional quadratic systems. Introduction: The advantages of single-stage treatment of cholecystocholedocholithiasis are well established, but the conditions for carrying out treatment on an outpatient basis require a review of concepts and practices of medical corporations. Objective: To evaluate the practice of treating cholecystocholedocholithiasis by laparoendoscopy on an outpatient basis with cost analysis. Method: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with cholecystocholedocholithiasis treated by combined laparoscopic cholecystectomy and endoscopic choledocholithotomy from January 2015 to January 2019. After collecting data from physical and digital medical records, the patients were divided into two groups—AR (n = 42)—ambulatory regimen and HR (n = 28)—hospitalization regimen—which were compared in terms of demographic, clinical and treatment variables and their results, as well as in terms of costs. Results: The mean age of the AR group was lower than that of the HR group and the physical status of the AR patients was better when assessed according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) (p = 0.01). There was no difference between groups regarding the risk of choledocholithiasis (p = 0.99). For the AR group, the length of stay was shorter: 11.29 h × 65.21 h (p = 0.02), as was the incidence of postoperative complications assessed by applying the Clavien–Dindo classification: 3 (7.1%) × 11 (39.2%) (p < 0.01). The total mean costs were higher for the HR group (USD 2489.93) than the AR group (USD 1650.98) (p = 0.02). Conclusion. Outpatient treatment of cholecystocholedocholithiasis by laparoendoscopy is safe and viable for most cases, has a lower cost and can support the reorientation of training and practice of hepatobiliary surgeons. (1) Background: Malaria remains a significant global public health issue. Since parasites quickly became resistant to most of the available antimalarial drugs, treatment effectiveness must be constantly monitored. In Brazil, up to 10% of cases of vivax malaria resistant to chloroquine (CQ) have been registered. Unlike P. falciparum, there are no definitive molecular markers for the chemoresistance of P. vivax to CQ. This work aimed to investigate whether polymorphisms in the pvcrt-o and pvmdr1 genes could be used as markers for assessing its resistance to CQ. (2) Methods: A total of 130 samples from P. vivax malaria cases with no clinical and/or parasitological evidence of CQ resistance were studied through polymerase chain reaction for gene amplification followed by target DNA sequencing. (3) Results: In the pvcrt-o exons, the K10 insert was present in 14% of the isolates. Regarding pvmdr1, T958M and F1076L haplotypes showed frequencies of 95% and 3%, respectively, while the SNP Y976F was not detected. (4) Conclusions: Since K10-pvcrt-o and F1076L/T958M-pvmdr1 polymorphisms were detected in samples from patients who responded well to CQ treatment, it can be concluded that mutations in these genes do not seem to have a potential for association with the phenotype of CQ resistance. Indeed, the textile dye industry has a significant impact on the global economy, as it is an integral part of the textile and fashion industries. However, this advancement has become a great concern with industrial waste, a good part of these dyes have toxic characteristics to the environment and living beings. The objective of this work is the use of local corn starch as an adsorbent, for the removal of acid violet (AV19), a dye that is highly toxic and carcinogenic in real water samples. The material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared (IR). The optimized parameters were concentration, time, and pH, in which the best results will be obtained at 60 min and pH 7. The experiment was compared to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The concentration of dye was 4 mg L−1 had the highest removal which was 84.46 %. The prim rate constant is k′ = 0.8592 therefore the adsorption system studied obeys the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In the next step, we will apply the top-performing starch to environmental samples containing the investigated dye. An analytical curve was constructed in the 2–14 ppm range at a maximum wavelength of 590 nm. The detection limit was 0.541 mg/L, and the percentage recovery was obtained in the range of 95–99.8 % for real water samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cheese powder is a multifunctional ingredient that is produced by spray drying a hot cheese emulsion called cheese feed. Feed stability is achieved by manipulating calcium equilibrium using emulsifying salts. However, the increased demand for 'green' products created a need for alternative production methods. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of ohmic heating (OH) on Cheddar cheese, mineral balance, and the resulting cheese feed characteristics compared with a conventional method. A full factorial design was implemented to determine the optimal OH parameters for calcium solubilization. Electric field exposure and temperature had a positive correlation with mineral solubilization, where temperature had the greatest impact. Structural differences in pre-treated cheeses (TC) were analyzed using thermorheological and microscopic techniques. Obtained feeds were analyzed for particle size, stability, and viscosity. OH-treatment caused a weaker cheese structure, indicating the potential removal of calcium phosphate complexes. Lower component retention of OH_TC was attributed to the electroporation effect of OH treatment. Microscopic images revealed structural changes, with OH_TC displaying a more porous structure. Depending on the pre-treatment method, component recovery, viscosity, particle size distribution, and colloidal stability of the obtained feeds showed differences. Objetivo: compreender as práticas de educação em saúde no contexto da formação em enfermagem. Métodos: estudo qualitativo, realizado em Instituição de Ensino Superior da rede privada. Participaram 22 sujeitos, que responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada, cujas informações foram organizadas e analisadas pelo método de Análise Conteúdo. Resultados: identificaram-se três categorias: educação em saúde e o enfermeiro como educador; educação em saúde na atenção primária; e comparativo das práticas educativas nos níveis de atenção. Conclusão: os acadêmicos compreenderam a importância da educação em saúde em sua formação, e sentiam a necessidade de expandir essas práticas para todos os níveis de atenção em saúde.

In electromagnetism courses, students often solve Poisson's equation for a point charge in the presence of an infinitely large perfectly conducting planar surface, usually by the method of images. However, no surface is perfectly flat; so at some level, corrugations must be introduced to model the real world. Clinton et al. [Phys. Rev. B 31, 7540 (1985)] solved the problem, including corrugations, using a perturbative calculation of the corresponding Green's function. We provide a detailed pedagogical review of this calculation and extend it in order to solve for the electrostatic potential of a corrugated neutral conducting cylinder in the presence of a uniform electric field. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a worldwide public health problem, with high morbidity and mortality rates. The development of new drugs to treat OSCC is paramount. Piper plant species have shown many biological activities. In the present study, we show that dichloromethane partition of Piper cernuum (PCLd) is nontoxic in chronic treatment in mice, reduces the amount of atypia in tongues of chemically induced OSCC, and significantly increases animal survival. To identify the main active compounds, chromatographic purification of PCLd was performed, where fractions 09.07 and 14.05 were the most active and selective. These fractions promoted cell death by apoptosis characterized by phosphatidyl serine exposition, DNA fragmentation, and activation of effector caspase-3/7 and were nonhemolytic. LC–DAD–MS/MS analysis did not propose matching spectra for the 09.07 fraction, suggesting compounds not yet known. However, aporphine alkaloids were annotated in fraction 14.05, which are being described for the first time in P. cernuum and corroborate the observed cytotoxic activity. Putative molecular targets were determined for these alkaloids, in silico, where the androgen receptor (AR), CHK1, CK2, DYRK1A, EHMT2, LXRβ, and VEGFR2 were the most relevant. The results obtained from P. cernuum fractions point to promising compounds as new preclinical anticancer candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
