KM3NeT will study atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos with two multipurpose neutrino detectors, ARCA and ORCA, primarily aimed at GeV–PeV neutrinos. Thanks to the multiphotomultiplier tube design of the digital optical modules, KM3NeT is capable of detecting the neutrino burst from a Galactic or near-Galactic core-collapse supernova. This potential is already exploitable with the first detection units deployed in the sea. This paper describes the real-time implementation of the supernova neutrino search, operating on the two KM3NeT detectors since the first months of 2019. A quasi-online astronomy analysis is introduced to study the time profile of the detected neutrinos for especially significant events. Themechanism of generation and distribution of alerts, aswell as the integration into theSNEWSandSNEWS 2.0 global alert systems, are described. The approach for the follow-up of external alerts with a search for a neutrino excess in the archival data is defined. Abstract: The optical module of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope is an innovative multi-faceted large area photodetection module. It contains 31 three-inch photomultiplier tubes in a single 0.44m diameter pressure-resistant glass sphere. The module is a sensory device also comprising calibration instruments and electronics for power, readout and data acquisition. It is capped with a breakout-box with electronics for connection to an electro-optical cable for power and long-distance communication to the onshore control station. The design of the module was qualified for the first time in the deep sea in 2013. Since then, the technology has been further improved to meet requirements of scalability, cost-effectiveness and high reliability. The module features a sub-nanosecond timing accuracy and a dynamic range allowing the measurement of a single photon up to a cascade of thousands of photons, suited for the measurement of the Cherenkov radiation induced in water by secondary particles from interactions of neutrinos with energies in the range of GeV to PeV. A distributed production model has been implemented for the delivery of more than 6000 modules in the coming few years with an average production rate of more than 100 modules per month. LCF/BQ/IN17/11620019), EU: MSC program (ref. 101025085), Spain., This article presents the potential of a combined analysis of the JUNO and KM3NeT/ORCA experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. This combination is particularly interesting as it significantly boosts the potential of either detector, beyond simply adding their neutrino mass ordering sensitivities, by removing a degeneracy in the determination of Delta M-31(2) between the two experiments when assuming the wrong ordering. The study is based on the latest projected performances for JUNO, and on simulation tools using a full Monte Carlo approach to the KM3NeT/ORCA response with a careful assessment of its energy systematics. From this analysis, a 5 sigma determination of the neutrino mass ordering is expected after 6 years of joint data taking for any value of the oscillation parameters. Abstract: KM3NeT is a research infrastructure aiming to study astrophysical sources as well as to perform particle physics studies, through the detection of neutrinos in the abyssal depths of the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector (Oscillation Research with Cosmics in the Abyss), currently under construction, is deployed at 2450 m depth near Toulon, France. It consists of vertical structures (Detection Units) equipped with spherical Digital Optical Modules, each hosting a set of photomultiplier tubes capable of detecting neutrino events from the Cherenkov radiation induced by the daughter particles. In this contribution, an analysis of data collected with the first 6 Detection Units (ORCA6) leading to a sample of atmospheric neutrino events is described. The angular resolution and the energy reconstruction performance for this event selection, which is a key factor for measuring the atmospheric neutrino flux are presented.

Abstract: KM3NeT/ORCA is a water-Cherenkov neutrino detector, currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 2450 meters. The project’s main goal is the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy by measuring the energy- and zenith-angle-resolved oscillation probabilities of atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth. Additionally, the detector observes a large amount of atmospheric muons, which can be used to study extensive air showers generated by cosmic ray particles. This work describes a deep-learning based reconstruction of atmospheric muons using graph convolutional networks. They are used to reconstruct the zenith angle, the muon multiplicity and the diameter of atmospheric muon bundles. Simulations and measured data from an early four line stage of the detector are used to evaluate the performance. Furthermore, the reconstructions are compared to the ones of classical approaches, and use cases for the indirect study of cosmic ray particles are shown.

Abstract: Star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and starburst galaxies (SBGs) are extragalactic sources which could produce high-energy neutrinos. In principle, they could play a rather important role for explaining at least a sizeable part of IceCube’s observations of astophysical neutrino. Using a recent theoretical model which implemented a blending of spectral indeces, we present the KM3NeT/ARCA sensitivities for such a diffuse flux from the startburst galaxies. In particular, we provide the 5-year differential sensitivity for the two building blocks of ARCA. We make use only of the track-like events in the range of 100 GeV - 10 PeV differentiate in 11 bins of energy. We show how the upcoming neutrino telescope could observe the diffuse SFG and SBG within 5 years of data taking. We found the minimum of the sensitivity at around 100 TeV, which is also the energy where the SBG contribution is expected to peak. This would not only constrain the multi-component fit of the observed astrophysical neutrino flux at that energy (100 TeV), but would also provide us a direct link between the star-forming activity in the reservoir environments and the hadronic emissions.

Abstract: We present the design of a next-generation experiment, n2EDM, currently under construction at the ultracold neutron source at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) with the aim of carrying out a high-precision search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron. The project builds on experience gained with the previous apparatus operated at PSI until 2017, and is expected to deliver an order of magnitude better sensitivity with provision for further substantial improvements. An overview is of the experimental method and setup is given, the sensitivity requirements for the apparatus are derived, and its technical design is described.

Abstract: Experiments dedicated to the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron require outstanding control of the magnetic-field uniformity. The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute uses a Hg199 co-magnetometer to precisely monitor temporal magnetic-field variations. This co-magnetometer, in the presence of field nonuniformity, is, however, responsible for the largest systematic effect of this measurement. To evaluate and correct that effect, offline measurements of the field nonuniformity were performed during mapping campaigns in 2013, 2014, and 2017. Abstract: The KM3NeT Collaboration is constructing a km3-volume neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean sea, ARCA (Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss), for the detection and subsequent study of high-energy cosmic neutrinos.This telescope will be able to reconstruct the arrival direction of the neutrinos with a precision of ~0.1 degrees. The configuration of ARCA makes it sensitive to neutrinos in a wide energy range, from sub-TeV up to tens of PeV. Moreover, this detector has a large field of view and a very high duty cycle, allowing a full-sky (and all-flavours) searches. All these features make ARCA an excellent candidate to study transient neutrino sources. Atmospheric muons and neutrinos, produced by primary cosmic rays, constitute the main background for ARCA. This background can be several orders of magnitude higher than the expected cosmic neutrino flux. In this work, we introduce an event selection which reduces the background up to a negligible level inside the region of interest and within the search time window. The ARCA performance to detect a transient neutrino flux, including the effective area, sensitivity and discovery potential, are provided for a given test source, and for different time windows.

Abstract: An anomalous flux of neutrinos produced in hypothetical annihilations or decays of dark matter inside a source would produce a signal observable with neutrino telescopes. As suggested by observations, a conspicuous amount of dark matter is believed to accumulate in the centre of our Galaxy, which is in neat visibility for the Mediterranean underwater telescopes ANTARES and KM3NeT. Searches have been conducted with a maximum likelihood method to identify the presence of a dark matter signature in the neutrino flux measured by ANTARES. Results of all-flavour searches for WIMPs with masses from 50 GeV/c$^2$ up to 100 TeV/c$^2$ over the whole operation period from 2007 to 2020 are presented here. Alternative scenarios which propose a dark matter candidate in the heavy sector extensions of the Standard Model would produce a clear signature in the ANTARES telescope, that can exploit its view of the Galactic Centre up to high energies. The presentation of Galactic Centre searches is completed with ongoing analyses and future potential of the KM3NeT telescope, in phased construction in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract: We report first time measurements of the beta-neutrino angular correlation based on the kinetic energy shift of protons emitted in parallel or anti-parallel directions with respect to the positron in the beta decay of $^{32}$Ar. This proof of principle experiment provided simultaneous measurements for the superallowed 0$^+$~$\rightarrow$~0$^+$ transition followed by a 3356~keV proton emission and for a Gamow-Teller transition followed by a 2123~keV proton emission. The results, respectively ${\tilde a_{\beta\nu}}=1.01(3)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$ and ${\tilde a_{\beta\nu}}=-0.22(9)_{(stat)}(2)_{(syst)}$, are found in agreement with the Standard Model. A careful analysis of the data shows that future measurements can reach a precision level of 10$^{-3}$ for both pure Fermi and pure Gamow-Teller decay channels, providing new constraints on both scalar and tensor weak interactions., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Precise measurements in the β decay of the 35Ar nucleus enable to search for deviations from the Standard Model (SM) in the weak sector. These measurements enable either to check the CKM matrix unitarity or to constrain the existence of exotic currents rejected in the V-A theory of the SM. For this purpose, the β-ν angular correlation parameter, aβν, is inferred from a comparison between experimental and simulated recoil ion time-of-flight distributions following the quasi-pure Fermi transition of 35Ar1+ ions confined in the transparent Paul trap of the LPCTrap device at GANIL. During the last experiment, 1.5×106 good events have been collected, which corresponds to an expected precision of less than 0.5% on the aβν value. The required simulation is divided between the use of massive GPU parallelization and the GEANT4 toolkit for the source-cloud kinematics and the tracking of the decay products.

Abstract: The STEREO experiment is a very short baseline reactor antineutrino experiment aiming at testing the hypothesis of light sterile neutrinos as an explanation of the deficit of the observed neutrino interaction rate with respect to the predicted rate, known as the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly. The detector center is located 10 m away from the compact, highly $^{235}$U enriched core of the research nuclear reactor of the Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble, France. This paper describes the STEREO site, the detector components and associated shielding designed to suppress the external sources of background which were characterized on site. It reports the performances in terms of detector response and energy reconstruction.

Abstract: International audience; The electron shakeoff of F19 and Cl35 atoms resulting from the β+ decay of Ne+19 and Ar+35 ions has been investigated using a Paul trap coupled to a time of flight recoil-ion spectrometer. The charge-state distributions of the recoiling daughter nuclei were compared to theoretical calculations based on the sudden approximation and accounting for subsequent Auger processes. The excellent agreement obtained for Cl35 is not reproduced in F19. The shortcoming is attributed to the inaccuracy of the independent particle model employed to calculate the primary shakeoff probabilities in systems with rather low atomic numbers. This calls for more elaborate calculations, including explicitly the electron-electron correlations.

46. Quantum dynamics of rovibrational transitions in H2-H2 collisions: Internal energy and rotational angular momentum conservation effects.

Abstract: We present a full dimensional quantum mechanical treatment of collisions between two H2 molecules over a wide range of energies. Elastic and state-to-state inelastic cross sections for ortho-H2 + para-H2 and ortho-H2 + ortho-H2 collisions have been computed for different initial rovibrational levels of the molecules. For rovibrationally excited molecules, it has been found that state-to-state transitions are highly specific. Inelastic collisions that conserve the total rotational angular momentum of the diatoms and that involve small changes in the internal energy are found to be highly efficient. The effectiveness of these quasiresonant processes increases with decreasing collision energy and they become highly state-selective at ultracold temperatures. They are found to be more dominant for rotational energy exchange than for vibrational transitions. For non-reactive collisions between ortho- and para-H2 molecules for which rotational energy exchange is forbidden, the quasiresonant mechanism involves a purely vibrational energy transfer albeit with less efficiency. When inelastic collisions are dominated by a quasiresonant transition calculations using a reduced basis set involving only the quasiresonant channels yield nearly identical results as the full basis set calculation leading to dramatic savings in computational cost. Abstract: We report quantum dynamics calculations of rotational and vibrational energy transfer in collisions between two para-H2 molecules over collision energies spanning from the ultracold limit to thermal energies. Results obtained using a recent full-dimensional H2-H2 potential energy surface (PES) developed by Hinde [J. Chem. Phys. 128, 154308 (2008)] are compared with those derived from the Boothroyd, Martin, Keogh, and Peterson (BMKP) PES [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 666 (2002)]. For vibrational relaxation of H2(v=1,j=0) by collisions with H2(v=0,j=0) as well as rotational excitations in collisions between ground state H2 molecules, the PES of Hinde is found to yield results in better agreement with available experimental data. A highly efficient near-resonant energy transfer mechanism that conserves internal rotational angular momentum and was identified in our previous study of the H2-H2 system [Phys. Rev. A 77, 030704(R) (2008)] using the BMKP PES is also found to be reproduced by the Hinde PES, demonstrating that the process is largely insensitive to the details of the PES. In the absence of the near-resonance mechanism, vibrational relaxation is driven by the anisotropy of the potential energy surface. Based on a comparison of results obtained using the Hinde and BMKP PESs with available experimental data, it appears that the Hinde PES provides a more accurate description of rotational and vibrational transitions in H2-H2 collisions, at least for vibrational quantum numbers v <= 1.
