Standard traditional gem identification requires expert supervision, while sophisticated modern methods are time-consuming and expensive. In contrast, reflectance spectroscopy coupled with artificial intelligence is economical and convenient and does not require specialist supervision. This study established an artificial neural network model that consists of standard multilayered, feed-forward, and back-propagation neural networks, and obtained reflectance spectra of a transparent gem (almandine), an opaque gem (turquoise), several almandine imitations (agate, plastic, and glass), and several treated turquoise samples (dyed, impregnated, and Zachery treated) using an Analytical Spectral Devices spectrometer. The acquired spectra were used to train and test the artificial neural network model. The results show that the model can effectively discriminate between genuine and imitation gems of different classes. However, discrimination between natural and treated gems of same class is not as effective as discrimination of gems of different classes. The results suggest that an artificial neural network based on reflectance spectroscopy could serve as a useful tool for preliminary gem identification, and the advanced identification needs further training and investigation. Two phases of diabase-sill-forming magmatism are recorded within the Badu anticline where magmas were emplaced into upper Palaeozoic carbonates and clastic rocks of the Youjiang fold-and-thrust belt in the SW South China Block, China. Zircons from these diabase units yield weighted mean U–Pb ages of 249.2±2.0 Ma and 187.1±3.3 Ma, and magmatic oxygen fugacity values from ‒20 to ‒6 (average of ‒12, equating to FMQ +5) and ‒20 to ‒10 (average of ‒15, equating to FMQ +2), respectively. These data indicate that the sills were emplaced during Early Triassic and Early Jurassic times. The discovery of c. 250 Ma mafic magmatism in this area was probably related to post-flood-basalt extension associated with the Emeishan mantle plume or rollback of the subducting Palaeo-Tethys slab. The c. 190 Ma diabase sills indicate that the southwestern South China Block records Early Jurassic mafic magmatism and lithospheric extension that was likely associated with a transition from post-collisional to within-plate tectonic regimes. The emplacement of diabase intrusions at depth may have driven hydrothermal systems, enabling the mobilization of elements from sedimentary rocks and causing the formation of a giant epigenetic metallogenic domain. The results indicate that high-oxygen-fugacity materials within basement rocks caused crustal contamination of the magmas, contributing to the wide range of oxygen fugacity conditions recorded by the Au-bearing Badu diabase. In addition, data from inherited xenocrystic zircons within the Badu diabase and detrital zircons from basement rocks suggest that the Neoproterozoic Jiangshao suture extends to the south of the Badu anticline. Many of the sandstones at cultural heritage sites around the world are susceptible to chemical weathering, and long-term monitoring of the chemical weathering would be of great value for heritage conservation and would also provide reference data for environmental protection policies and projects. Reflectance spectroscopy is a potential tool for monitoring sandstone weathering due to its non-destructive characteristics. In this paper, we present the results of an investigation into the reflectance spectra of sandstones at the Yungang Grottoes, China, where the sandstones are variously fresh, calcite-dissolved, or argillitic-altered. We found several spectral absorptions, including those at 490, 675, 900, 1410, 1918, 2205, 2330, 2350, and 2380 nm. The absorptions at 490, 675, and 900 nm are related to hematite cement, while that at 2330 nm is associated with calcite cement. The absorptions at 1410, 2205, 2350, and 2380 nm are induced by the Al-OH vibration of kaolinite, and that at 1918 nm is related to crystal water. The calcite-dissolved sandstones have lower absorption intensities at 2330 nm than fresh sandstones, and the argillitic-altered sandstones have lower absorption intensities at 490, 675, and 900 nm than the fresh sandstones. In the 1st-derivative reflectance plots, the absorption peaks at ∼1400 nm shift towards shorter wavelengths with increasing kaolinite contents. The spectral features of the fresh, calcite-dissolved, and argillitic-altered sandstones are all different, and this means they can be distinguished spectroscopically, which demonstrates the usefulness of reflectance spectroscopy for the long-term monitoring of sandstone weathering in the Yungang Grottoes. Reflectance spectra and hyperspectral images of carnallite, halite, and anhydrite samples from the Mboukoumassi sylvite deposit, Congo, were obtained using an ASDTMspectrometer and a HySpexTMimager, respectively. The spectral absorption features of the ore mineral, carnallite, at 999, 1076, 1206, 1232, 1763, and 1970 nm are highly reproducible and distinct from absorption features of the gangue minerals, halite and anhydrite. The intensity of the approximately 1200 nm absorption feature can be used to map the spatial distribution of carnallite in drill core. We also established an empirical relationship between potassium content estimated through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements and absorption intensity at approximately 1200 nm. Based on this empirical relationship, the potassium content of a core surface was mapped. This technique provides more detailed estimates of potassium content and its spatial distribution in core samples than possible by point sampling, and this is beneficial in assessing the resource potential sylvite deposits. This study presents an IDL program to subset hyperspectral drill core imagery automatically based on graphic identification. A HySpex SWIR-320m-e imager and drill cores from the Xiangshan uranium deposit were used to do an application test. Based on the HySpex images, we found that the ratio variation tolerance of 75%, minimum marker size of 37 pixel × 37 pixel (28 mm × 28 mm), and wavelength of 1141.3 nm (band #30) are preferences for the IDL program. The results indicate that the IDL program subsets hyperspectral images with high accuracy and efficiency without consuming additional time during the scanning process. Additionally, deformation of the core box, the material from which the core box is made, and variation in the diameter of the drill core do not significantly affect the quality of the results.
