In this study, we evaluated the cis/trans-lycopene content in commercial ketchup, and investigated the effect of cooking of fermented tomato sour soup added with one of seven oils including peanut oil (PO), sesame oil (SO), corn oil (CO), tung seed oil (TSO), olive oil (OO), Litsea cubeba oil (LCO), and mustard oil (MO) on lycopene isomerization. The results showed significant differences in the contents of total lycopene and cis-lycopene among six brands of ketchup (P < 0.05), with cis-lycopene accounting for only 20.84%-24.56% of the total lycopene. The contents of total lycopene and cis-lycopene were significantly different among the seven cooked fermented tomato sour soup samples (P < 0.05), and their proportions of cis-isomers (51.40%-78.23%) were 1.2-1.9 times higher than that of the blank group and 2.09-3.75 times higher than those of the six brands of ketchup. Specifically, the sample with added MO had the highest proportion of cis-lycopene (78.23%), followed by those with SO and PO (75.34% and 71.65%, respectively). The total lycopene and cis-lycopene contents of the sample with added PO were 6.6 and 11.4 times higher than those of the blank control group, respectively, indicating that the former has great market potential. Therefore, the results of this study could provide a scientific basis for the further processing of fermented tomato sour soup for high-value functional products.

Red sour soup is a Guizhou specialty condiment made by the natural fermentation of tomatoes and chili. In this study, three components (tomato acid, chili acid, and tomato and chili mixed acid) of split‐fermented red sour soup were explored to compare the quality characteristics and microbial communities in the middle and late fermentation stages. The titratable acidity of mixed acids was lower than that of tomato acid and chili acid in the middle stage, but it was significantly increased in the late stage. The cell viability of lactic acid bacteria was mostly higher than that of yeasts during the whole fermentation. Also significantly increased in the late stage of fermentation were sensory scores and the signal intensity of sour substances. However, the signal intensity of both bitter and salty substances decreased, and the total amount of free amino acids was reduced. In addition, the antioxidant capacity of the samples and the dominant microorganisms were different between the two fermentation stages, Lactobacillus and Kazachstania were the key common genus of the different components of split‐fermented red sour soup. Neuroendocrine transdifferentiation (NEtD), also commonly referred to as lineage plasticity, emerges as an acquired resistance mechanism to molecular targeted therapies in multiple cancer types, predominately occurs in metastatic epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)‐mutant non‐small cell lung cancer treated with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors and metastatic castration‐resistant prostate cancer treated with androgen receptor targeting therapies. NEtD tumors are the lethal cancer histologic subtype with unfavorable prognosis and limited treatment. A comprehensive understanding of molecular mechanism underlying targeted‐induced plasticity could greatly facilitate the development of novel therapies. In the past few years, increasingly elegant studies indicated that NEtD tumors share key the convergent genomic and phenotypic characteristics irrespective of their site of origin, but also embrace distinct change and function of molecular mechanisms. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of molecular mechanism in regulating the NEtD, including genetic alterations, DNA methylation, histone modifications, dysregulated noncoding RNA, lineage‐specific transcription factors regulation, and other proteomic alterations. The inherent chiral structures of DNA serve as attractive scaffolds to construct DNA hybrid catalysts for valuable enantioselective transformations. Duplex and G‐quadruplex DNA‐based enantioselective catalysis has made great progress, yet novel design strategies of DNA hybrid catalysts are highly demanding and atomistic analysis of active centers is still challenging. DNA i‐motif structures could be finely tuned by different cytosine‐cytosine base pairs, providing a new platform to design DNA catalysts. Herein, we found that a human telomeric i‐motif DNA containing cytosine‐silver(I)‐cytosine (C‐Ag+‐C) base pairs interacting with Cu(II) ions (i‐motif DNA(Ag+)/Cu2+) could catalyze Diels–Alder reactions with full conversions and up to 95 % enantiomeric excess. As characterized by various physicochemical techniques, the presence of Ag+ is proved to replace the protons in hemiprotonated cytosine‐cytosine (C : C+) base pairs and stabilize the DNA i‐motif to allow the acceptance of Cu(II) ions. The i‐motif DNA(Ag+)/Cu2+ catalyst shows about 8‐fold rate acceleration compared with DNA and Cu2+. Based on DNA mutation experiments, thermodynamic studies and density function theory calculations, the catalytic center of Cu(II) ion is proposed to be located in a specific loop region via binding to one nitrogen‐7 atom of an unpaired adenine and two phosphate‐oxygen atoms from nearby deoxythymidine monophosphate and deoxyadenosine monophosphate, respectively. Background: Significant progress has been made in kidney xenotransplantation in the past few years, and this field is accelerating towards clinical translation. Therefore, surveillance of the xenograft with appropriate tools is of great importance. Ultrasonography has been widely used in kidney allotransplantation and served as an economical and non‐invasive method to monitor the allograft. However, questions remain whether the ultrasonographic criteria established for human kidney allograft could also be applied in xenotransplantation. Methods: In the current study, we established a porcine‐rhesus life sustaining kidney xenotransplantation model. The xenograft underwent intensive surveillance using gray‐scale, colorful Doppler ultrasound as well as 2D shear wave elastography. The kidney growth, blood perfusion, and cortical stiffness were measured twice a day. These parameters were compared with the clinical data including urine output, chemistry, and pathological findings. Results: The observation continued for 16 days after transplantation. Decline of urine output and elevated serum creatinine were observed on POD9 and biopsy proven antibody‐mediated rejection was seen on the same day. The xenograft underwent substantial growth, with the long axis length increased by 32% and the volume increased by threefold at the end of observation. The resistive index of the xenograft arteries elevated in response to rejection, together with impaired cortical perfusion, while the peak systolic velocity (PSV) was not compromised. The cortical stiffness also increased along with rejection. Conclusion: In summary, the ultrasound findings of kidney xenograft shared similarities with those in allograft but possessed some unique features. Background. MRI is an important tool for accurate detection and targeted biopsy of prostate lesions. However, the imaging appearances of some prostate cancers are similar to those of the surrounding normal tissue on MRI, which are referred to as MRI-invisible prostate cancers (MIPCas). The detection of MIPCas remains challenging and requires extensive systematic biopsy for identification. In this study, we developed a weakly supervised UNet (WSUNet) to detect MIPCas. Methods. The study included 777 patients (training set: 600; testing set: 177), all of them underwent comprehensive prostate biopsies using an MRI-ultrasound fusion system. MIPCas were identified in MRI based on the Gleason grade (≥7) from known systematic biopsy results. Results. The WSUNet model underwent validation through systematic biopsy in the testing set with an AUC of 0.764 (95% CI: 0.728-0.798). Furthermore, WSUNet exhibited a statistically significant precision improvement of 91.3% (p < 0.01) over conventional systematic biopsy methods in the testing set. This improvement resulted in a substantial 47.6% (p < 0.01) decrease in unnecessary biopsy needles, while maintaining the same number of positively identified cores as in the original systematic biopsy. In this study, the effects of Lentilactobacillus buchneri (L. buchneri: CCTCC M 2023228) and Kazachstania bulderi (K. bulderi: CCTCC M 2023227) on the quality characteristics and volatile flavor substances in fermented red sour soup were explored based on natural fermentation. Compared to natural fermentation (nitrite: 5.5 mg/kg; amino acid nitrogen: 0.17 g/100 g; lycopene: 63.73 µg/mL), three fortified fermentation methods using L. buchneri, K. bulderi, and both strains together significantly reduced the concentrations of nitrite (2.62, 2.49, and 2.37 mg/kg), amino acid nitrogen (0.03 g/100 g, 0.02 g/100 g, and 0.05 g/100 g), and lycopene (26.64, 32.45, and 51.89 µg/mL). Total acid content (11.53 g/kg) and lactic acid bacteria count (285.9 ± 1.65 × 106 CFU/mL) were the elements most significantly increased by fortified fermentation with L. buchneri relative to other fermentation methods. A total of 99 volatile compounds were determined in red sour soup and could be roughly classified into alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and esters. Fortified fermentation with two strains and fortified fermentation with K. bulderi increased the content of methyl butanoate and 3-hydroxybutan-2-one-acetoin (D). This study confirmed the effects of L. buchneri and K. bulderi on the quality and flavor of fermented red sour soup and provided a theoretical basis for the fortified fermentation of red sour soup. Scale-up bubble columns for wet air oxidation (WAO) represent a novel solution to the growing problem of sodium acetate-containing waste discharge. This study used an axial dispersion model to simulate a reactor at a high temperature of 320 °C. By minimizing the structure size and gas fed into the system, the estimated optimal reactor dimensions were obtained. At the optimized reactor diameter, total height, initial oxygen partial pressure, and superficial gas velocity of 1 m, 7 m, 40 bar, and 0.07 m/s, respectively, a degradation efficiency of over 90% was obtained, at which the residual concentration of sodium acetate degraded from 700 mol/m3 to 70 mol/m3. The axial distributions of the dissolved oxygen, sodium acetate, and oxygen concentrations in the gas were nearly uniform. The bubble column reactor exhibited an intermediate state between well-mixed flow and plug flow for both liquid and gas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy can be effective against clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), but many patients show no benefit. Tumor-derived pericytes (TDPs) may promote tumor progression by influencing T cells and are an immunotherapy target; however, they may comprise functionally distinct subtypes. We aimed to identify markers of tumor-promoting TDPs and develop TDP-targeting strategies to enhance ICB therapy effectiveness against ccRCC. Methods: We analyzed the relationship between endosialin (EN) expression and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) infiltration in ccRCC tumor samples using flow cytometry and in a ccRCC-bearing mice inhibited for EN via knockout or antibody-mediated blockade. The function of ENhigh TDPs in CTL infiltration and tumor progression was analyzed using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) data from ccRCC tissue-derived TDPs and single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data from an online database. The role of EN in TDP proliferation and migration and in CTL infiltration was examined in vitro. Finally, we examined the anti-tumor effect of combined anti-EN and anti-programmed death 1 (PD-1) antibodies in ccRCC-bearing mice. Results: High EN expression was associated with low CTL infiltration in ccRCC tissues, and inhibition of EN significantly increased CTL infiltration in ccRCC-bearing mice. RNA-seq and scRNA-seq analyses indicated that high EN expression represented the TDP activation state. EN promoted TDP proliferation and migration and impeded CTL infiltration in vitro. Finally, combined treatment with anti-EN and anti-PD-1 antibodies synergistically enhanced anti-tumor efficacy. Conclusion: ENhigh TDPs are in an activated state and inhibit CTL infiltration into ccRCC tissues. This article introduces a practical software architecture called CUBES, which focuses on system integration and evolvement for online virtual universities. The key of CUBES is a supporting platform that helps to integrate and evolve heterogeneous educational applications developed by different organizations. Both standardized educational applications that follow popular e-learning standards, such as SCORM and CELTS, and unstandardized ones can be integrated into CUBES with ease. A regularly used virtual university based on CUBES that includes educational applications covering the entire spectrum of the learning and management process is introduced to examine the usability of CUBES. The authors hope that new architectures, tools, and methods are explored to reduce the effort in building and evolving virtual universities.

Evidence of more recent studies should be updated to evaluate the effect of long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) on blood pressure and hypertension. Studies of long-term effects of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 on blood pressure (SBP, DBP, MAP), hypertension were searched in Pubmed, Web of Science and Embase before May, 2021. Meta-analysis of 41 studies showed that exposure to PM1, PM2.5 was associated with SBP (1.76 mmHg (95%CI:0.71, 2.80) and 0.63 mmHg (95%CI:0.40, 0.85), per 10 μg/m3 increase in PM), all three air pollutants (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) was associated with DBP (1.16 mmHg (95%CI:0.34, 1.99), 0.31 mmHg (95%CI:0.16, 0.47), 1.17 mmHg (95%CI:0.24, 2.09), respectively. As for hypertension, PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 were all significantly associated with higher risk of hypertension (OR=1.27 (95%CI:1.06, 1.52), 1.15 (95%CI:1.10, 1.20) and 1.11 (95%CI:1.07, 1.16). A picosecond synchronously pumped terahertz optical parametric oscillator based on silicon membrane waveguide (Si‐based WTPO) is proposed and numerically simulated. Through designing the structure parameters of the silicon membrane waveguide, a broadband terahertz frequency range is obtained by satisfying the phase matching condition. The parametric oscillation process and output characteristics of Si‐based WTPO are numerically analyzed by solving the four‐wave mixing coupled‐wave equations, and the result has indicated that the parametric oscillation within the resonant cavity can apparently enhance the output terahertz wave power. Meanwhile, high bandwidth and efficiency output terahertz wave can be obtained, and too high pump power will lead to a reaction of reverse conversion. Finally, the threshold pump power is calculated. The Si‐based WTPO system we proposed is expected to make some contributions to the study of compact and efficient terahertz wave sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
