Abstract Background Previous research on the association between physical activity (PA) and kidney function is inconsistent. The association between muscle mass and serum creatinine (SCr) may have implications for interpreting the effect of PA on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Few studies have reported changes in physical activity and changes in kidney function. Methods A cohort study was constructed using the UK Biobank. Changes in physical activity were self‐reported as metabolic equivalent task (MET) minutes/week. eGFR was calculated using SCr and cystatin C (CysC). Cox and nonlinear regressions with restricted cubic splines were applied to explore the association between changes in physical activity and rapid decline of kidney function (RDKF, eGFR annual decrease ≥3 mL/min/1.73 m2), and the annual change of eGFR. An exploratory analysis of cardiorespiratory fitness as the exposure was conducted. Results Among 11 757 participants, the median follow‐up time was 4.4 years. Participants whose PA decreased by 1000 MET minutes/week at the follow‐up assessment had a 2% reduction in risk of developing RDKFSCr (HR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.00). In contrast, a 1000 MET minutes/week increase in PA was associated with a 4% reduction in risk of developing RDKFCysC (HR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.93, 0.99). A PA increase of 1000 MET minutes/week was associated with eGFRCysC annual increase of 0.04 mL/min/1.73 m2 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.06) but no significant changes in eGFRSCr. Conclusions In this general population study, there are differing associations between changes in PA and changes in kidney function depending on the kidney biomarker used. Increasing PA is modestly associated with improving annual eGFRCysC and reduced risk of RDKF.

Abstract Background The predictive value of systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) risk in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treated by thrombectomy remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of SIRI for SAP in patients with AIS treated by thrombectomy. Methods We included AIS patients treated by thrombectomy between August 2018 and August 2022 at our institute. We used multivariate logistic regression to construct the prediction model and performed a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis to evaluate the ability of SIRI to predict SAP and constructed a calibration curve to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the model. We evaluated the clinical application value of the nomogram using decision curve analysis. Results We included 84 eligible patients with AIS in the analysis, among which 56 (66.7%) had SAP. BackgroundDespite the widespread use in ischemic stroke, cancer, and malnutrition, the predictive ability of serum albumin to globulin ratio (A/G) among patients suffering from aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains unknown. This study aimed to determine if serum A/G ratio is associated with the occurrence of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) after aSAH.MethodsWe retrospectively viewed the medical records of aSAH patients from 08/2017 to 08/2022. Serum albumin and globulin laboratory test results were collected within 24 hours after admission. Serum A/G were dichotomized based on whether the DCI occurred. Logistic regression was used to determine the predictors of DCI. The relationship between serum A/G and the occurrence of DCI was analyzed with receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve.ResultsA total of 363 eligible patients with aSAH were included in the study, among which DCI occurred in 87 patients(23.97%). Serum A/G[OR=2.720, 95%CI (1.190-6.270), P=0.018], non-surgical[OR=0.228, 95%CI (0.065-0.621), P=0.008], lactate dehydrogenase[OR=1.004, 95%CI (1.000-1.008), P=0.029], P[OR=0.354, 95%CI (0.130-0.926), P=0.038], plasma fibrinogen[OR=1.266, 95%CI (1.019-1.583), P=0.035] were associated with the occurrence of DCI. ROC showed that serum A/G, non-surgical, LDH, P, plasma fibrinogen could predict the occurrence of DCI in aSAH patients with values 0.575, 0.560, 0.602, 0.571 and 0.539 for serum A/G, non-surgical, LDH, P, plasma fibrinogen, respectively.ConclusionsIn conclusion, serum A/G levels are correlated with DCI in individuals with aSAH, and high serum A/G levels on admission may be associated with the occurrence of DCI.

Developing highly efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) for electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising approach to promoting carbon neutrality. However, challenges such as low activity, selectivity and high costs hinder industrial scaling, attributed to the lack of innate activity or insufficient transition metal (TM) active site density in current catalysts. Therefore, the focus of CO2RR research remains on developing SACs with intrinsic catalytic activity, high TM coverage and cost-effectiveness. This study presents the design of carbon-based materials with ultra-high TM coverage (TM2C12) (TM = Mo, Ru, Rh, W, Re, Os and Ir) as electrocatalyst SACs for CO2RR using density functional theory calculations. Among these materials, W2C12 (W represents tungsten) demonstrates superior selectivity and catalytic activity for CO2RR to carbon monoxide (CO) products with overpotentials of 0.45 V and a W coverage of up to 71.84 wt%. To further enhance its catalytic activity, non-metallic (NM) coordination modification (NM = B, N, O, P doping and C vacancy) was explored on W2C12. The results indicate that N-doped W2C12 (N-W2C12) can significantly improve selectivity and catalytic activity, achieving an extremely low overpotential of 0.34 V. This research offers valuable insights into designing SACs with high activity, selectivity and stability for CO2RR and other catalytic reactions.

Abstract Background Primary caregivers of hemodialysis patients suffer from varying degrees of stress from their patients. Caring for hemodialysis patients can expose caregivers to many problems, leading to an increased burden of care and even impacting the quality of care. The purpose of our study was to examine whether family resilience could be a mediating variable moderating the relationship between patient coping styles and caregiver burden. Methods The study was a cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study that interviewed 173 pairs of hemodialysis patients and their caregivers at a blood purification center in a public hospital in China. The Brief Coping Styles Scale (Chinese version) was used to assess individuals’ coping styles for disease and treatment. From the caregiver’s perspective, the Family Resilience Assessment Scale (Chinese version) was used to understand the resilience of families, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale was used to capture the caregiver’s subjective experience of burden. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 23 and Amos version 26 to analyze the relationships between variables to examine for correlation and construct mediated effects models. ObjectiveChoroidal neovascularization (CNV) represents the predominant form of advanced wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (wAMD). Macrophages play a pivotal role in the pathological progression of CNV. Meteorin-like (Metrnl), a novel cytokine known for its anti-inflammatory properties in macrophages, is the focus of our investigation into its mechanism of action and its potential to impede CNV progression.MethodsCell viability was evaluated through CCK-8 and EdU assays following Metrnl treatment. Expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and proteins were assessed using quantitative reverse‐transcription polymerase chain reaction(qRT‐PCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and western blot techniques. Protein-protein interactions were identified through protein mass spectrometry and co-immunoprecipitation (Co‐IP). Additionally, in vivo and in vitro neovascularization models were employed to evaluate angiogenesis.ResultsOur results revealed downregulated Metrnl levels in the choroid-sclera complex of CNV mice, the aqueous humor of wAMD patients, and activated macrophages. Metrnl overexpression demonstrated a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokine production, influenced endothelial cell function, and suppressed angiogenesis in choroid explants and CNV models. Through protein mass spectrometry and Co‐IP, we confirmed Metrnl binds to UCHL-1 to modulate the NF-κB signaling pathway. This interaction inhibited the transcription and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, ultimately suppressing angiogenesis.ConclusionIn summary, our findings indicate that Metrnl down-regulates macrophage pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion via the UCHL-1/NF-κB signaling pathway. This mechanism alleviates the inflammatory microenvironment and effectively inhibits choroidal neovascularization.

Conclusions: Gasserian ganglion HL-PRF combined with block can be an effective and safe technique to relieve the pain of acute/subacute zoster-related trigeminal neuralgia and prevent the incidence of TPHN.

Abstract Background Necroptosis is a novel type of programmed cell death distinct from apoptosis. However, the role of necroptosis in ovarian cancer (OC) remains unclear. The present study investigated the prognostic value of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) and the immune landscape in OC. Methods The gene expression profiling and clinical information were downloaded from the TCGA and GTEx databases. Differentially expressed NRGs (DE-NRGs) between OC and normal tissueswere identified. The regression analyses were conducted to screen the prognostic NRGs and construct the predictive risk model. Patients were then divided into high- and low-risk groups, and the GO and KEGG analyses were performed to explore bioinformatics functions between the two groups. Subsequently, the risk level and immune status correlations were assessed through the ESTIMATE and CIBERSORT algorithms. The tumor mutation burden (TMB) and the drug sensitivity were also analyzed based on the two-NRG signature in OC. Results Totally 42 DE-NRGs were identified in OC. The regression analyses screened out two NRGs (MAPK10 and STAT4) with prognostic values for overall survival. The ROC curve showed a better predictive ability in five-year OS using the risk score. Immune-related functions were significantly enriched in the high- and low-risk group. Macrophages M1, T cells CD4 memory activated, T cells CD8, and T cells regulatory infiltration immune cells were associated with the low-risk score. The lower tumor microenvironment score was demonstrated in the high-risk group. Patients with lower TMB in the low-risk group showed a better prognosis, and a lower TIDE score suggested a better immune checkpoint inhibitor response in the high-risk group. Besides, cisplatin and paclitaxel were found to be more sensitive in the low-risk group. Conclusions MAPK10 and STAT4 can be important prognosis factors in OC, and the two-gene signature performs well in predicting survival outcomes. Our study provided novel ways of OC prognosis estimation and potential treatment strategy.

Objectives This study aims to explore the possible association between dietary knowledge and muscle mass in a Chinese population aged 60 years and above.Design Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies.Setting Data from the 2006 and 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were used for this study.Participants A total of 1487 Chinese participants (44.38% males) aged 60 and above in the 2006 survey were included in the cross-sectional study. From the same study population, a total of 1023 participants (46.82% males) with normal muscle mass on the interview date of 2006 were included in the longitudinal study.Outcome measures Dietary knowledge was accessed by a validated CHNS questionnaire. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was calculated using a validated anthropometric equation derived from a representative Chinese population. Based on the 2021 Chinese consensus on sarcopenia, the appendicular skeletal muscle mass was categorised as ‘normal’ or ‘low’ using sex-specific cut-off values.Results The prevalence of low muscle mass in the study population was 31.20%, with a higher prevalence in females (34.22%). People with low muscle mass have a significantly lower dietary knowledge score (mean difference: −1.74, 95% CI −2.20 to −1.29). In the cross-sectional analysis, one score higher in dietary knowledge score was associated with a 4% lower odds of low muscle mass (OR=0.96, 95% CI 0.93 to 0.99). Compared with people in the lowest quartile of dietary knowledge, people in the highest quartile have a 44% lower odds of low muscle mass (OR=0.56, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.91). In the longitudinal analysis, no significant association was found between dietary knowledge and low muscle mass, yet the upper 95% CI was close to one (HR=0.97, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.01).Conclusions Sufficient dietary knowledge may play a protective role in maintaining normal muscle mass in Chinese adults aged 60 or above.

Ferroptosis is a novel types of regulated cell death and is widely studied in cancers and many other diseases in recent years. It is characterized by iron accumulation and intense lipid peroxidation that ultimately inducing oxidative damage. So far, signaling pathways related to ferroptosis are involved in all aspects of determining cell fate, including oxidative phosphorylation, metal-ion transport, energy metabolism and cholesterol synthesis progress, et al. Recently, accumulated studies have demonstrated that ferroptosis is associated with gynecological oncology related to steroid hormone signaling. This review trends to summarize the mechanisms and applications of ferroptosis in cancers related to estrogen and progesterone, which is expected to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancers.

ObjectiveResearch on the possible impact of social alienation, family resilience, and caregiver burden on the coping styles of Chinese patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) is scarce. We explore the influence of social alienation, family resilience, and caregiver burden on the coping styles of MHD patients, both directly and indirectly.MethodsWe invited 173 MHD patients and their primary caregivers for a cross-sectional study; the study using convenience sampling method at the hemodialysis center of the First People’s Hospital of Foshan. The Chinese version of the generalized social of alienation scale, the Chinese version of the simplified coping style questionnaire, and a sociodemographic questionnaire were completed by the MHD patients, while their primary caregivers had filled out the Chinese family resilience assessment scale, the Chinese version of the Zarit caregiver burden interview, and provided socio-demographic information. SPSS macro program PROCESS v3.3 Model 6 were used for analyses of chain-mediated effects.ResultsIn the mediating effects model, the direct influence of social alienation upon coping styles was significant (95% CI −0.050, −0.014), and social alienation indirectly impacted coping style by family resilience in a significant way (95% CI −0.012, −0.001) or caregiver burden (95% CI −0.013, −0.001). In addition, social alienation significantly impacted coping style by both family resilience and caregiver burden (95% CI −0.008, −0.001).ConclusionSocial alienation can exert both a direct and indirect influence on coping styles through the mediating factors of family resilience and caregiver burden. Clinicians can take interventions to strengthen family resilience and reduce caregiver burden, which may be useful in improving socially isolated behaviors and coping skills in MHD patients.

Abstract Phase separation (PS) is a fundamental principle in diverse life processes including immunosurveillance. Despite numerous studies on PS, little is known about its dissolution. Here, it is shown that oleic acid (OA) dissolves the cyclic GMP–AMP synthase (cGAS)–deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) PS and inhibits immune surveillance of DNA. As solvent components control PS and metabolites are abundant cellular components, it is speculated that some metabolite(s) may dissolve PS. Metabolite‐screening reveals that the cGAS–DNA condensates formed via PS are markedly dissolved by long‐chain fatty acids, including OA. OA revokes intracellular cGAS–PS and DNA‐induced activation. OA attenuates cGAS‐mediated antiviral and anticancer immunosurveillance. These results link metabolism and immunity by dissolving PS, which may be targeted for therapeutic interventions.

As one of the most critical economic traits, the litter performance of sows is influenced by their parity. Some studies have indicated a connection between the gut microbiota and the litter performance of animals. In this study, we examined litter performance in 1363 records of different parities of Large White sows. We observed a marked decline in TNB (Total Number Born) and NBH (Number of Healthy Born) We observed a marked decline in TNB (Total Number Born) and NBH (Number of Healthy Born) among sows with parity 7 or higher. To gain a deeper understanding of the potential role of gut microbiota in this phenomenon, we conducted 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing of fecal DNA from 263 Large White sows at different parities and compared the changes in their gut microbiota with increasing parity. The results revealed that in comparison to sows with a parity from one to six, sows with a parity of seven or higher exhibited decreased alpha diversity in their gut microbiota. There was an increased proportion of pathogenic bacteria (such as Enterobacteriaceae, Streptococcus, and Escherichia–Shigella) and a reduced proportion of SCFA-producing families (such as Ruminococcaceae), indicating signs of inflammatory aging. The decline in sow function may be one of the primary reasons for the reduction in their litter performance.

IntroductionSarcopenia and low hemoglobin level are common in older adults. Few studies have evaluated the association between hemoglobin level and sarcopenia and with inconsistent findings. The multifaceted effects of sarcopenia on the human body and the high prevalence of anemia in the Chinese population make it necessary to explore the association between the two.MethodsUsing the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we explored the association between hemoglobin with sarcopenia and its components in the Chinese population aged 60 and above. Multivariate logistic and Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to examine the association of hemoglobin level with sarcopenia and sarcopenia components in individuals aged 60 years or above. The subgroup analysis covered residence, body mass index level, drinking status, and smoking status were conducted. The possible difference of associations between sexes was also explored.ResultsWith a total of 3,055 people, the hemoglobin concentration in people without sarcopenia, possible sarcopenia, and sarcopenia are 14.34 ± 2.22, 14.64 ± 2.27, and 13.58 ± 2.02 g/dl, respectively. Cross-sectional analysis showed strong evidence that hemoglobin was negatively associated with sarcopenia [Odds Ratio (OR) = 0.95, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.90–0.99] and low height-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86–0.97). On average, a per 1 g/dl higher hemoglobin level was associated with 5% lower odds of sarcopenia (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.90–0.98). The cohort study of 1,022 people demonstrated a statistically significant negative association of hemoglobin level with low physical performance [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.85–0.99], merely with sarcopenia (HR = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.84–1.00) and skeletal muscle mass (HR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.80–1.00). Sex-specific analysis suggested hemoglobin's association with sarcopenia, muscle mass, and physical performance in all sexes, with weaker magnitudes in females. Hemoglobin in urban residents and people with high body mass index (BMI) has a larger magnitude of the negative association with sarcopenia.DiscussionHemoglobin level associates with sarcopenia, muscle mass, and physical performance in the Chinese population aged 60 and above, with sex-specific, residence-specific, and BMI-specific effects.

Acute high-altitude diseases, including acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), have been recognized as potentially lethal diseases for altitude climbers. Various preconditioning stimuli, including hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), have been proposed to prevent acute high-altitude diseases. Herein, we reviewed whether and how HBO preconditioning could affect high-altitude diseases and summarized the results of current trials. Evidence suggests that HBO preconditioning may be a safe and effective preventive method for acute high-altitude diseases. The proposed mechanisms of HBO preconditioning in preventing high-altitude diseases may involve: 1) protection of the blood-brain barrier and prevention of brain edema, 2) inhibition of the inflammatory responses, 3) induction of the hypoxia-inducible factor and its target genes, and 4) increase in antioxidant activity. However, the optimal protocol of HBO preconditioning needs further exploration. Translating the beneficial effects of HBO preconditioning into current practice requires the “conditioning strategies” approach. More large-scale and high-quality randomized controlled studies are needed in the future.

Abstract Background The prognosis of lung cancer was found to be associated with a series of biomarkers related to the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME), which can modulate the biological behaviors and consequent outcomes of lung cancer. Therefore, establishing a prognostic model based on the TIME for lung cancer patients, especially young patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), is urgently needed. Methods In all, 809 lung cancer patients from the TCGA database and 71 young patients with LUAD in our center were involved in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis based on clinical characteristics and TIME-related expression patterns (as evaluated by IHC) were performed to estimate prognosis and were verified by prognostic nomograms. Results Both LUAD and lung cancer patients with high CD28 expression had shorter disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.0011; P = 0.0001) but longer overall survival (OS) (P = 0.0001; P = 0.0282). TIME-related molecules combined with clinical information and genomic signatures could predict the prognosis of young patients with LUAD with robust efficiency and could be verified by the established nomogram based on the Cox regression model. In addition, CD28 expression was correlated with an abundance of lymphocytes and could modulate the TIME. Higher CD28 levels were observed in primary tumors than in metastatic tissues. Conclusion TIME-related molecules were identified as compelling biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of lung cancer, especially in a cohort of young patients. Furthermore, CD28, which is associated with poor DFS but long OS, might participate in the modulation of the TIME and has a different role in the prognosis of young patients with LUAD.

Abstract Introduction Patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) benefit from treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Biomarkers such as programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), the tumor mutational burden (TMB) and the mismatch repair (MMR) status are used to predict the prognosis of ICIs therapy. Nevertheless, novel biomarkers need to be further investigated, and a systematic prognostic model is needed for the evaluation of the survival risks of ICIs treatment. Methods A cohort of 240 patients who received ICIs from the cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics was evaluated in this research. Clinical information and targeted sequencing data were acquired for analyses. The Kaplan-Meier plot method was used to perform survival analyses, and selected variables were then confirmed by a novel nomogram constructed by the “rms” package of R software. Results Seven percent of the NSCLC patients harbored ARID1A mutations, while 4% of the NSCLC patients harbored ARID1B mutations. Mutations in ARID1A and ARID1B were confirmed to be associated with sensitivity to ICIs. Patients harboring these mutations were found to have a better response to treatment (ARID1A: P = 0.045; ARID1B: P = 0.034) and prolonged progression-free survival (ARID1B: P = 0.032). Here, a novel nomogram was constructed to predict the prognosis of ICIs treatment. Elevation of the TMB, enhanced expression of PD-L1 and activation of the antigen presentation process and cellular immunity were found to be correlated with ARID1A and ARID1B mutations. Conclusion ARID1A and ARID1B could serve as novel biomarkers for the prognosis and sensitivity to ICIs of advanced NSCLC.

This study investigated the feasibility of using nanofibrilliated celluloses (CNF) (0.1% by weight of binder materials) with three oxidation degrees, no oxidation (NCNF), low oxidation (LCNF), and high oxidation (HCNF), as a viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) to develop polyethylene fiber (PE)-engineered cementitious composites (ECC). Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential were performed to characterize the properties of the CNF with different oxidation degrees. More stable CNF suspensions could be obtained due to the increasing oxidation degree. Rheology tests showed that CNF replacing VMA could modify the plastic viscosity and yield stress of the fresh matrices. With increasing the oxidation degree of CNF, a significant enhancement was seen for the rheological parameters. It was conducted that CNF could increase the compressive strength, the tensile stress, the nominal flexural strength, and the fracture toughness compared with ECC using VMA, and much higher oxidation degrees yielded higher enhancements (HCNF > LCNF > NCNF). ECC using CNF to replace VMA also achieved ultra-high ductility behavior with the tensile strain of over 8% and the saturated multiple cracking pattern. These finds were supplemented by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed that the degree of hydration increased with increasing CNF surface oxidation degree. Additionally, the morphology images of PE fibers were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of inulin and Chinese gallotannin on the meat fatty acids and urinary metabolites in sheep. Twenty-four healthy (25.80 ± 3.85 kg) weaned Hu lambs of approximately 4.5 months old were equally divided into four groups: control group (basal diet), treatment group I (basal diet + 0.1% inulin), treatment group II (basal diet + 0.1% inulin + 2% Chinese gallotannin), and treatment group III (basal diet + 0.1% inulin + 2% Chinese gallotannin + 4% PEG). The contents of myristic acid (C14:0) and palmitic acid (C16:0) were found to be lower in treatment group II than in the control group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the palmitoleic acid (C16:1) content in treatment group II was notably higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05), while the elaidic acid (C18:1n9t) content in treatment group II was higher than that in other groups (p < 0.05). Besides, the linoleic acid (C18:2n6c) content was higher in the treatment II and control groups than in the treatment I and III groups. Furthermore, compared with the control group, both 4-pyridoxic acid and creatinine in treatment groups I and II were upregulated (p < 0.05), while other metabolites, such as nicotinuric acid, l-threonine, palmitic acid, and oleic acid, were drastically downregulated (p < 0.05). These differential metabolites were found to be mainly involved in nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism (ko00760), vitamin B6 metabolism (ko00750), and the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway (ko00061). It is concluded that the combination of inulin and Chinese gallotannin in the diet could improve the energy and lipid metabolism of sheep, which may improve both mutton quality and production performance.

This study sought to evaluate the potential of mulched gravel to release nutrients in the field by conducting trials with three variations of wet-and-dry cycling of the soil beneath gravel mulch and bare soil. The results revealed that quartz, muscovite, clinochlore, and albite were the most abundant minerals in the gravels. Throughout the whole wet-and-dry cycle, the total content of 30 elements measured in the gravel-mulched soil was higher than in the bare soil treatment, and the content of the total element rose with increasing wet–dry cycle humidity. The enrichment ratio (Br) of each element in soil under gravel mulch relative to bare soil was in the sequence Mg > Ca > K > Cr > Na > Mn > V > Zn > Fe > Ti > Si > C > N > B> Co > (Br = 0) > Pb > Cu > Ga > P > Sn > Sr > Al > Be > Li > Mo > Ni > Se > As > S. Under gravel mulch, the elements impacted by the wet–dry cycle are primarily rock-forming, whereas the elements affected under bare soil are primarily trace elements. The wet-and-dry cycles of gravel affected soil nutrients mainly by increasing soil K, Ca, Na, and Mg contents. The differences in soil K and Ca contents significantly affected the growth of jujube trees and the jujube fruit yield. A dry/wet cycle level of 5 L/d per tree under gravel cover conditions can effectively improve soil nutrients and increase the jujube fruit yield without causing environmental problems.

Targeting DNA repair pathway offers an important therapeutic strategy for Homo sapiens (human) cancers. However, the failure of DNA repair inhibitors to markedly benefit patients necessitates the development of new strategies. Here, we show that exosome component 1 (EXOSC1) promotes DNA damages and sensitizes human kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) cells to DNA repair inhibitor. Considering that endogenous source of mutation (ESM) constantly assaults genomic DNA and likely sensitizes human cancer cells to the inhibitor, we first analyzed the statistical relationship between the expression of individual genes and the mutations for KIRC. Among the candidates, EXOSC1 most notably promoted DNA damages and subsequent mutations via preferentially cleaving C site(s) in single-stranded DNA. Consistently, EXOSC1 was more significantly correlated with C>A transversions in coding strands than these in template strands in human KIRC. Notably, KIRC patients with high EXOSC1 showed a poor prognosis, and EXOSC1 sensitized human cancer cells to poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors. These results show that EXOSC1 acts as an ESM in KIRC, and targeting EXOSC1 might be a potential therapeutic strategy.

Background/AimsLong non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in many diseases and participate in posttranscriptional regulatory networks in tumors. However, the functions of major lncRNAs in cervical cancer are unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to construct a lncRNA-mRNA coexpression functional network and analyze lncRNAs that might contribute to the pathogenesis of cervical cancer.MethodsDifferentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) between three pairs of cervical cancer tissues and adjacent mucosa were identified by lncRNA microarray analysis. LncRNA-mRNA correlation analysis and functional enrichment were performed on the DEGs. From the correlation network, PCBP1-AS1 was selected as a candidate for further analysis. PCBP1-AS1 expression was examined by qPCR, and Kaplan–Meier survival, clinicopathology, GSEA, and immune infiltration analysis of PCBP1-AS1 were performed. The immune responses of PCBP1-AS1 expression in cervical cancer were analyzed using TIMER and western blot. PCBP1-AS1 was knocked down and overexpressed to evaluate its role in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.ResultsA total of 130 lncRNAs were significantly differentially expressed in cervical cancer patient samples compared with control samples. Differentially expressed mRNAs in the lncRNA-mRNA interaction network were involved in the EMT process. Combined with the Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, the coexpression network revealed that PCBP1-AS1 was significantly associated with OS and clinicopathological parameters in cervical cancer patients. Moreover, PCBP1-AS1 expression was not only significantly increased in cervical cancer specimens but also associated with tumor stage, TNM, and invasion. GSEA revealed that PCBP1-AS1 is closely correlated with cell biological function via the p53 and notch signaling pathways. TIMER analysis revealed that the numbers of NK cells and M2 macrophages decreased when PCBP1-AS1 expression was high, which was consistent with the western blot results in clinical samples. Furthermore, in vitro experiments showed that high expression of PCBP1-AS1 promoted cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.ConclusionsTranscriptomic and lncRNA-mRNA correlation analyses revealed that PCBP1-AS1 plays a key role as an independent prognostic factor in patients with cervical cancer. The identification of PCBP1-AS1 as a new biomarker for cervical cancer could help explain how changes in the immune environment promote cervical cancer development.

High-throughput antibody sequencing allows in-depth insights into human antibody repertoires. To investigate the characteristics of antibody repertoires in patients with chronic HBV infection, we performed Illumina sequencing and IMGT/HighV-QUEST analysis of B lymphocytes from healthy adults and the HBV carriers with high or low level of viral replication. The comparative study revealed high levels of similarity between the IgM and IgG repertoires of the HBV carriers and the healthy adults, including the somatic mutations in V regions, the average CDR3 length, and the occurrence of junctional modifications. Nevertheless, the diversity of the unique clones decreased and some clusters of unique clones expanded in the IgM repertoire of chronic HBV carriers (CHB) compared with healthy adults (HH) and inactive HBV carriers (IHB). Such difference in clone diversity and expansion was not observed in the IgG repertoires of the three populations. More shared antibody clones were found between the IgM repertoires of IHB and HH than that found between CHB and HH (7079 clones vs. 2304 clones). Besides, the biased used IGHD genes were IGHD2-2 and IGHD3-3 in CHB library but were IGHD3-10 and IGHD3-22 in IHB and HH library. In contrast, for IgG repertories, the preferred used VDJ genes were similar in all the three populations. These results indicated that low level of serum HBV might not induce significant changes in BCR repertoires, and high level of HBV replication could have more impacts on IgM repertories than IgG repertoires. Taken together, our findings provide a better understanding of the antibody repertoires of HBV chronically infected individuals.

ObjectivesTo investigate the association between the source of dietary fat and blood pressure for Chinese people aged between 30-59 with the aim of elucidating methods of hypertension prevention.DesignProspective cohort study using national survey data.Participants1,104 adults aged between 30-59 with normal blood pressures in 2006 were included in the study. Adults with history of prehypertension, hypertension, or were taking hypertension drugs in 2006 were excluded. Participants with implausibly high or low daily total energy intakes (5000 kcal/d) were excluded. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and people with motor impairment were excluded.ResultsPeople with abnormal blood pressure ingested a lower percent of dietary fat taken from seafood (P < 0.001) and a higher percent of dietary fat taken from fast food (P < 0.001). Dietary fat obtained from seafood and dairy products can be protective against abnormal blood pressure with a RR = 0.01 (95% CI: 0.001 to 0.25; P = 0.004) for seafood, and RR = 0.14 (95% CI: 0.04 to 0.44; P = 0.001) for egg, milk, and dairy products.ConclusionSeafood, egg, milk, and dairy products can be recommended as sources of dietary fat to reduce the incidence of hypertension and prehypertension while fast food should be avoided.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a deadly disease with a low 5-year survival rate. Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapy has been widely used in the treatment of malignancies, and chemotherapy regimens that include nimotuzumab have been confirmed to have satisfactory efficacy among esophageal carcinoma (EC) patients. However, a subpopulation of patients may develop resistance to nimotuzumab. Here, we report an advanced ESCC patient who experienced hyperprogressive disease induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors and was then treated with a chemotherapy regimen containing nimotuzumab. NGS examination of this patient demonstrated that PIK3CA mutation and a RICTOR amplification might participate in primary and acquired resistance to nimotuzumab, respectively, via the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of peptidyl-prolyl cis-trans isomerase NIMA-interacting 1 (Pin1) with C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) count for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in infants. A total of 84 hospitalized infants with CAP and 69 healthy infants were included in this study. The clinical manifestations and laboratory assay results of infants were recorded. Abstract In the recruitment domain, knowing the employer industry of jobs is important to get an insight about the demand in each industry. The existing system at CareerBuilder uses an employer name normalization system and an employer knowledge base (KB) to infer the employer industry of a job. However, errors may occur during the computation of the job employer and in the construction of the employer KB with the industry attributes. Since the KB is huge, it is not possible to manually detect the errors. Therefore, in this paper we use machine learning techniques to automatically detect the errors. With the observation that the main jobs posted by an employer often relate to the employer industry, e.g., truck driver jobs often correspond to employers in the transportation industry, we develop a system that classifies the industry of an employer using job posting data. We aggregate job postings from an employer and derive features from employer names, employer descriptions, job titles, and job descriptions to predict the industry of the employer. Two models are used for classification: (1) support vector machine and (2) random forest. Our experiments show that random forest is more effective than SVM in identifying the errors in the existing industry classification system, which achieves precision 0.69, recall 0.78, and f-score 0.73. It especially better handles mixed feature vectors when normalization errors occur. We also observe that generally our models perform better in detecting errors for industries that have higher error rates.

Person re-identification refers to matching images of pedestrians from camera networks distributed at different locations. It involves multiple challenging problems, especially large variations in illumination, viewpoint, and occlusion which exert negative affect on recognition rate. In this paper, we propose the partial least square (PLS) algorithm based on the Riemannian manifold. The covariance matrix is established by extracting the feature information of the region of the torso and leg images of a pedestrian. To find a suitable tangent plane in the covariance matrix of the Riemannian manifold, we create a relation between the torso and leg image by using the PLSs algorithm to obtain the correlative feature information of pedestrian images. Using unsupervised learning, this method performs well in the single-shot scenario. Experimental results on publicly available benchmarks show better performance of the proposed method.

We reported the complete mitochondrial genome yielded using next-generation sequencing of Corydoras agassizii in this study. The total length of the mitochondrial genome is 16,562 bp, with the base composition of 32.6% A, 25.9% T, 26.8% C, and 14.7% G, in several. It contains two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and a 945 bp non-coding control region (D-loop region). The sequence of these genes is consistent with that found in the Siluriformes. The complete mitogenomes of C. agassizii and other 17 species of fish were constructed by phylogenetic analysis using Neighbour-Joining method. The topological structure indicated that species participating in the analysis belong to three groups (Siluridae, Loricariidae, and Callichthyidae) of nine genera, and the C. agassizii was clustered with other species from genus Corydoras. The external morphological characteristics of C. agassizii are consistent with the results of molecular classification, so the mitogenome can be used to identify Corydoras species in the future.

Based on a pair of linear frequency modulation waveforms with opposite slopes, the mathematical model of the influence of intermediate frequency deviation (IFD) and sampling frequency deviation (SFD) on simultaneous polarisation measurement is derived. An IFD and SFD joint estimation and calibration method is proposed in this article. Simulation and real data results show that the radar frequency stability can change the position and phase of the polarisation scattering matrix (PSM) measurement. The approach proposed in this article can regulate the peak deviation effectively, compensate the phase error and accurately acquire the four elements of PSM.

Biomimetic giant membrane vesicles, with size and lipid compositions comparable to cells, have been recognized as an attractive experimental alternative to living systems. Due to the similarity of their membrane structure to that of body cells, cell-derived giant plasma membrane vesicles have been used as a membrane model for studying lipid/protein behavior of plasma membranes. However, further application of biomimetic giant membrane vesicles has been hampered by the side-effects of chemical vesiculants and the utilization of osmotic buffer. We herein develop a facile strategy to derive giant membrane vesicles (GMVs) from mammalian cells in biofriendly medium with high yields. These GMVs preserve membrane properties and adaptability for surface modification and encapsulation of exogenous molecules, which would facilitate their potential biological applications. Moreover, by loading GMVs with therapeutic drugs, GMVs could be employed for drug transport to tumor cells, which represents another step forward in the biomedical application of giant membrane vesicles. This study highlights biocompatible GMVs with biomimicking membrane surface properties and adaptability as an ideal platform for drug delivery strategies with potential clinical applications.

The random responses of the vibratory machine systems with stochastic parameters subjected to random excitation are researched using a stochastic perturbation method. The numerical results are obtained. The dynamic characteristics of nonlinear stochastic vibratory machine are analyzed.

Math6/atoh8, a bHLH transcription factor, is thought to be indispensable for early embryonic development and likely has important roles in vertebrate tissue-specific differentiation. However, the function of Atoh8 during early development is not clear because homozygous knockout causes embryonic lethality in mice. We have examined the effects of the atoh8 gene on the differentiation of retina and skeletal muscle during early development in zebrafish.We isolated a Math6 homologue in zebrafish, designated as zebrafish atoh8. Whole -mount in situ hybridization analysis showed that zebrafish atoh8 is dynamically expressed mainly in developing retina and skeletal muscle. Atoh8-MO knock-down resulted in reduced eye size with disorganization of retinal lamination. The reduction of atoh8 function also affected the arrangement of paraxial cells and differentiated muscle fibers during somite morphogenesis.Our results show that Atoh8 is an important regulator for the development of both the retina and skeletal muscles necessary for neural retinal cell and myogenic differentiation during zebrafish embryogenesis.

Background. Zoster-associated pain (ZAP) is often refractory to conventional treatments and can seriously affect patients' physical and mental health. High-voltage pulsed radio frequency (H-PRF) is a new method for treating ZAP with pulse voltages above 60 V or even up to 100 V. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of H-PRF in the management of ZAP. Methods. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library were searched from their inception to June 2022 to identify controlled trials which evaluated the effectiveness of H-PRF compared with standard PRF and sham operations. The primary outcome was pain scores at different treatment times. The secondary outcomes included SF-36 scores, rescue analgesic dose, and side effects. Results. We reviewed 6 randomized controlled trials involving 428 patients. There was no significant difference between the H-PRF and standard PRF pain scores at 1 week after surgery and the sham operation group at 1 month. At 1, 3, and 6 months, the H-PRF group had better pain score than the standard PRF group, and at 3 months, the pain score was better than the sham operation group. The H-PRF group showed improvement in the SF-36 score, and there were no significant complications in the H-PRF group. Conclusions. H-PRF is an effective and safe treatment method that has better effects in relieving pain and improving the quality of life and physical and mental health. Although H-PRF provides pain relief rates comparable to those of the control group in the early stages, it remains the preferred and alternative treatment for relieving herpes zoster-related pain. In recent years, using network pharmacology and molecular docking technology to reveal the therapeutic targets of irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS) has become a research hotspot. This paper summarizes 31 studies of traditional Chinese medicine for IBS by domestic and foreign scholars, and expounds the action mechanism of single drug drug pair and compound prescription in the treatment of IBS from the aspects of drug activity, action target, biological process and pathway analysis. It also discusses the shortcomings and prospects of network pharmacology and molecular docking technology in the field of traditional Chinese medicine research, and provides reference for expanding the research ideas of traditional Chinese medicine in treating IBS.
