Abstract We have developed a non-invasive predictive nomogram model that combines image features from Sonazoid contrast-enhanced ultrasound (SCEUS) and Sound touch elastography (STE) with clinical features for accurate differentiation of malignant from benign focal liver lesions (FLLs). This study ultimately encompassed 262 patients with FLLs from the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, covering the period from March 2020 to April 2023, and divided them into training set (n = 183) and test set (n = 79). Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent indicators and develop a predictive model based on image features from SCEUS, STE, and clinical features. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC) curve was determined to estimate the diagnostic performance of the nomogram with CEUS LI-RADS, and STE values. The C-index, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were further used for validation. Multivariate and LASSO logistic regression analyses identified that age, ALT, arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE), enhancement level in the Kupffer phase, and Emean by STE were valuable predictors to distinguish malignant from benign lesions. The nomogram achieved AUCs of 0.988 and 0.978 in the training and test sets, respectively, outperforming the CEUS LI-RADS (0.754 and 0.824) and STE (0.909 and 0.923) alone. The C-index and calibration curve demonstrated that the nomogram offers high diagnostic accuracy with predicted values consistent with actual values. DCA indicated that the nomogram could increase the net benefit for patients. The predictive nomogram innovatively combining SCEUS, STE, and clinical features can effectively improve the diagnostic performance for focal liver lesions, which may help with individualized diagnosis and treatment in clinical practice.

CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) manufactured by laser powder bed fusion has been demonstrated to possess a superior trade-off of tensile strength and ductility due to unique microstructures during the printed process. However, the improvement of mechanical properties of 3D printed-CrMnFeCoNi HEA through the addition of nano-scaled ceramic particles instead of in-situ precipitated particles is poorly studied. In this work, the effects of WC additions on the microstructure evolution and strengthening mechanism of additive-manufactured HEA samples at both room temperature (298 K) and cryogenic temperature (77 K) were systematically investigated. Except for the representative hierarchical microstructure characteristics of 3D printed- HEA samples, WC particles are dissolved completely in the CrMnFeCoNi matrix without obvious element segregation. The mechanical tests at room temperature (RT) revealed an excellent comprehensive mechanical property (tensile strength of 925 MPa and ductility of 38%) of the HEA sample with 5 wt% WC addition, which is mainly attributed to the solid solution strengthening induced by WC dissolution. In addition, the strength and ductility of the HEA sample synchronously increase when the testing temperature decreases from 298 K to 77 K, due to the reaction between dislocation and high-density deformation twins (DTs). The tensile strength (∼1420 MPa) of HEA-5 wt% WC sample at 77 K is higher than that of traditional CrMnFeCoNi HEA, because of contribution to strengthening from dislocation pile-up, entanglement and wavy dislocation slide.

Several studies have documented a relationship between short-term exposure to atmospheric sulfur dioxide (SO2) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, findings vary across different regions. This meta-analysis employed a random-effects model to calculate the combined risk estimate for each 10-μg/m3 increase in ambient SO2 concentration. Subgroup analysis aimed to identify sources of heterogeneity. To assess potential bias, studies were evaluated using a domain-based assessment tool developed by the World Health Organization. Sensitivity analyses, based on bias risk, explored how model assumptions influenced associations. An evidence certainty framework was used to evaluate overall evidence quality. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023446823). We thoroughly reviewed 191 full-text articles, ultimately including 15 in the meta-analysis. The pooled relative risk for COPD was 1.26 (95 % CI 0.94–1.70) per 10-μg/m3 increase in ambient SO2. Eleven studies were deemed high risk due to inadequate handling of missing data. Overall evidence certainty was rated as medium. Given SO2's significant public health implications, continuous monitoring is crucial. Future research should include countries in Africa and Oceania to enhance global understanding of atmospheric SO2-related health issues.

Abstract Hemiacetal compounds are valuable building blocks in synthetic chemistry, but their enzymatic synthesis is limited and often hindered by the instability of hemiacetals in aqueous environments. Here, we show that this challenge can be addressed through reaction engineering by using immobilized peroxygenase from Agrocybe aegerita (AaeUPO) under neat reaction conditions, which allows for the selective C-H bond oxyfunctionalization of environmentally significant cyclic ethers to cyclic hemiacetals. A wide range of chiral cyclic hemiacetal products are prepared in >99% enantiomeric excess and 95170 turnover numbers of AaeUPO. Furthermore, by changing the reaction medium from pure organic solvent to alkaline aqueous conditions, cyclic hemiacetals are in situ transformed into lactones. Lactams are obtained under the applied conditions, albeit with low enzyme activity. These findings showcase the synthetic potential of AaeUPO and offer a practical enzymatic approach to produce chiral cyclic hemiacetals through C-H oxyfunctionalization under mild conditions.

Drawing inspiration from the structural resemblance between a natural product N-(3-carboxypropyl)-2-acetylpyrrole and phenylbutyric acid, a pioneer HDAC inhibitor evaluated in clinical trials, we embarked on the design and synthesis of a novel array of HDAC inhibitors containing an N-linked 2-acetylpyrrole cap by utilizing the pharmacophore fusion strategy. Among them, compound 20 exhibited potential inhibitory activity on HDAC1, and demonstrated notable potency against RPMI-8226 cells with an IC50 value of 2.89 ± 0.43 μM, which was better than chidamide (IC50 = 10.23 ± 1.02 μM). Western blot analysis and Annexin V-FTIC/propidium iodide (PI) staining showed that 20 could enhance the acetylation of histone H3, as well as remarkably induce apoptosis of RPMI-8226 cancer cells. The docking study highlighted the presence of a hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen of the 2-acetylpyrrole cap group and Phe198 of the HDAC1 enzyme in 20, emphasizing the crucial role of introducing this natural product-inspired cap group. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that the docked complex had good conformational stability. The ADME parameters calculation showed that 20 possesses remarkable theoretical drug-likeness properties. Taken together, these results suggested that 20 is worthy of further exploration as a potential HDAC-targeted anticancer drug candidate.

Neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) is a highly aggressive cancer that is resistant to hormone therapy and characterized by poor prognosis, as well as limited therapeutic options. Since the natural product lycobetaine was reported to exhibit good antitumor activities against various types of cancers, we initially simplified the scaffold of lycobetaine to obtain the active compound 1, an isoquinoline derivative with an aryl moiety substitution at the 4-position, which showed apparent antiproliferative activities against NPEC cell line LASCPC-01 in vitro. Subsequently, we carried out structural optimization and systematic structure–activity relationship (SAR) studies on compound 1, leading to the discovery of compound 46, which demonstrated potent inhibitory activities against the LASCPC-01 cell line with an IC50 value of 0.47 μM. Moreover, compound 46 displayed remarkable selectivity over prostate cancer cell line PC-3 with a selectivity index greater than 190-fold. Further cell-based mechanism studies revealed that compound 46 and lycobetaine can effectively induce G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis dose dependently. However, lycobetaine inhibited the expression of neuroendocrine markers, while compound 46 slightly upregulated these proteins. This suggested that compound 46 might exert its antitumor activities through a different mechanism than lycobetaine, warranting further study.

Photocatalytic non-oxidative coupling of methane (PNOCM) is a mild and cost-effective method for the production of multicarbon compounds. However, the separation of photogenerated charges and activation of methane (CH4) are the main challenges for this reaction. Here, single crystal-like TiO2 nanotubes (VO-p-TNTs) with oxygen vacancies (VO) and preferential orientation were prepared and applied to PNOCM. The results demonstrate that the significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance is mainly related to the strong synergistic effect between preferential orientation and VO. The preferential orientation of VO-p-TNT along the [001] direction reduces the formation of complex centers at grain boundaries as the form of interfacial states and potential barriers, which improves the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, VO provides abundant coordination unsaturated sites for CH4 chemisorption and also acts as electron traps to hinder the recombination of electrons and holes, establishing an effective electron transfer channel between the adsorbed CH4 molecule and photocatalyst, thus weakening the C–H bond. In addition, the introduction of VO broadens the light absorption range. As a result, VO-p-TNT exhibits excellent PNOCM performance and provides new insights into catalyst design for CH4 conversion.

Abstract Background The joint effect of folic acid (FA) supplements and maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has not been fully addressed. This study aimed to examine the joint effect of FA supplements and pre-pregnancy BMI on GDM. Methods Pregnant women at 4 to 14 weeks of gestation (n = 3186) were recruited during their first prenatal visit in Qingdao from May 1, 2019, to June 27, 2021. The main outcome was GDM at 24–28 weeks’ gestation. Screening was based on 75 g 2-hour oral glucose tolerance (OGTT), a fasting glucose ≥ 5.1 mmol/L, or a 1-hour result ≥ 10.0 mmol/L, or a 2-hour result ≥ 8.5 mmol/L. The interactive effect of FA supplements and pre-pregnancy BMI on GDM was examined using logistic regression analysis and ratio of odds ratios (ROR) was used to compare subgroup differences. Results Overall, 2,095 pregnant women were included in the analysis, and GDM incidence was 17.76%. Sn-2 palmitate is widely used in infant formula. However, little is known about its effects on metabolism and body composition in middle-aged and elderly adults. In a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, we enrolled Chinese adults aged 45–75 years with self-reported constipation. Individuals were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to a 1,3-dioleoyl-2-palmitoyl-glycerol (OPO)-enriched oil (66% palmitic acid in the sn-2 position) or a control vegetable oil (24% palmitic acid in the sn-2 position) daily for 24 weeks. Skim milk powder was used as the carrier for both fats. Interviews and body composition were performed at baseline, week 4, week 12 and week 24. A fasting blood draw was taken except at week 4. This study was a secondary analysis and considered exploratory. A total of 111 adults (83 women and 28 men, mean age 64.2 ± 7.0 years) were enrolled, of whom 53 were assigned to the OPO group and 57 to the control group. During the intervention, blood glucose, triglyceride, the triglyceride-glucose index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and remnant cholesterol remained stable, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased in both groups (p = 0.003). No differences in change were observed between the groups (all p > 0.05). From baseline to week 24, the level of visceral fat increased slightly (p = 0.017), while body weight, total body water, protein, soft lean mass, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) decreased in two groups (p < 0.01). At weeks 4, 12 and 24, the SMI decreased less in the OPO group than in the control group, with a trend towards significance (p = 0.090). A 24-week daily intake of sn-2-palmitate-enriched oil had no adverse impact on fasting blood glucose, lipids and body composition compared with the control vegetable oil in Chinese adults (funded by Chinese Nutrition Society National Nutrition Science Research Grant, National Key Research and Development Program of China and Wilmar (Shanghai) Biotechnology Research & Development Center Co., Ltd.; ChiCTR1900026480).

Abstract Effective charge separation and transfer is deemed to be the contributing factor to achieve high photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting performance on photoelectrodes. Building a phase junction structure with controllable phase transition of WO3 can further improve the photocatalytic performance. In this work, we realized the transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic by regulating the annealing temperatures, and constructed an orthorhombic-monoclinic WO3 (o-WO3/m-WO3) phase junction. The formation of oxygen vacancies causes an imbalance of the charge distribution in the crystal structure, which changes the W-O bond length and bond angle, accelerating the phase transition. As expected, an optimum PEC activity was achieved over the o-WO3/m-WO3 phase junction in WO3-450 photoelectrode, yielding the maximum O2 evolution rate roughly 32 times higher than that of pure WO3-250 without any sacrificial agents under visible light irradiation. The enhancement of catalytic activity is attributed to the atomically smooth interface with a highly matched lattice and robust built-in electric field around the phase junction, which leads to a less-defective and abrupt interface and provides a smooth interfacial charge separation and transfer path, leading to improved charge separation and transfer efficiency and a great enhancement in photocatalytic activity. This work strikes out on new paths in the formation of an oxygen vacancy-induced phase transition and provides new ideas for the design of catalysts.

Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are emerging as one of the most advanced hybrid energy storage devices, however, their development is limited by the imbalance of the dynamics and capacity between the anode and cathode electrodes. Herein, anthracite was proposed as the raw material to prepare coal-based, nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials (CNPCs), together with being employed as a cathode and anode used for dual-carbon lithium-ion capacitors (DC-LICs). The prepared CNPCs exhibited a folded carbon nanosheet structure and the pores could be well regulated by changing the additional amount of g-C3N4, showing a high conductivity, abundant heteroatoms, and a large specific surface area. As expected, the optimized CNPCs (CTK-1.0) delivered a superior lithium storage capacity, which exhibited a high specific capacity of 750 mAh g−1 and maintained an excellent capacity retention rate of 97% after 800 cycles. Furthermore, DC-LICs (CTK-1.0//CTK-1.0) were assembled using the CTK-1.0 as both cathode and anode electrodes to match well in terms of internal kinetics and capacity simultaneously, which displayed a maximum energy density of 137.6 Wh kg−1 and a protracted lifetime of 3000 cycles. This work demonstrates the great potential of coal-based carbon materials for electrochemical energy storage devices and also provides a new way for the high value-added utilization of coal materials.

Abstract Background Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) may increase the risk of hypertension in women of childbearing age, who may be exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) simultaneously. Till now, few studies have investigated the joint effects of VDD and SHS on hypertension in this population. We evaluated whether exposure to SHS modified the association between VDD and hypertension. Methods Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2007-2014 were analyzed. Our research subjects were 2826 nonsmoking and nonpregnant women of childbearing age (20-44 years old). Hypertension was defined based either on systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 130 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 80 mmHg or on now taking prescribed medicine for hypertension. The directed acyclic graphs (DAG) and the back-door criterion were used to select a minimal sufficient adjustment set of variables (MSAs) that would identify the unconfounded effect of 25(OH)D and hypertension. The interactive effect of VDD and SHS on hypertension was evaluated by using logistic regression models, followed by strata-specific analyses. Results The prevalence of VDD in the hypertension group was significantly higher than that in the non-hypertension group (48.2% vs 41.0%, P = 0.008), as well as the exposure rate of SHS (39.1% vs 33.8%, P = 0.017). VDD was independently associated with nearly 50% increased risk of hypertension [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 2.04], while no significant association was observed between SHS and hypertension. However, SHS showed a significant synergistic effect on VDD with a higher aOR of 1.79 (95% CI: 1.14, 2.80) (P interaction = 0.011). This synergistic effect was more obvious when stratified by BMI (in overweight women, aOR, 95% CI =4.74, 1.65-13.60 for interaction vs 2.33, 1.01-5.38 for VDD only) and race (in Non-Hispanic Black women, aOR, 95% CI =5.11, 1.58-16.54 for interaction vs 2.69, 1.10-6.62 for VDD only). Conclusion There exist synergistic effects of SHS and VDD on the prevalence of hypertension in American women of childbearing age, with more significant effects in women who were overweight or Non-Hispanic Black. Further studies are warranted to verify this finding in other populations, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the joint effect of SHS and VDD need to be elucidated.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the reliability of corticomotor excitability measurements using the conventional hand-hold transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) method for the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle in healthy adults and the number of stimuli required for reliable assessment.Methods: Forty healthy adults participated in three repeated sessions of corticomotor excitability assessment in terms of resting motor threshold (rMT), slope of recruitment curve (RC), peak motor evoked potential amplitude (pMEP), and MEP latency using conventional TMS method. The first two sessions were conducted with a rest interval of 1 h, and the last session was conducted 7–10 days afterward. With the exception of rMT, the other three outcomes measure elicited with the block of first 3–10 stimuli were analyzed respectively. The within-day (session 1 vs. 2) and between-day (session 1 vs. 3) reliability for all four outcome measures were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement, and minimum detectable difference at 95% confidence interval.Results: Good to excellent within-day and between-day reliability was found for TMS-induced outcome measures examined using 10 stimuli (ICC ≥ 0.823), except in pMEP, which showed between-day reliability at moderate level (ICC = 0.730). The number of three stimuli was adequate to achieve minimum acceptable within-day reliability for all TMS-induced parameters and between-day reliability for MEP latency. With regard to between-day reliability of RC slope and pMEP, at least seven and nine stimuli were recommended respectively.Conclusion: Our findings indicated the high reliability of corticomotor excitability measurement by TMS with adequate number of stimuli for the TA muscle in healthy adults. This result should be interpreted with caveats for the specific methodological choices, equipment setting, and the characteristics of the sample in the current study.Clinical Trial Registration:http://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2100045141.

Background: Intrapartum cesarean delivery has been the focus of many researchers. We derived and validated a model to predict cesarean for low-risk Chinese nulliparous undergoing induction of labor. Methods: We developed a risk model for cesarean by including variables in univariate and multivariable logistic regression using the development set (3841 pregnant women). The performance of the model was assessed for the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration and decision curve analysis (DCA). Additionally, we validated the model externally using an independent dataset (3421 pregnant women). Results: Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that age, height, body mass index (BMI), weight change during pregnancy, gestational age, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), meconium-stained amniotic fluid and neonatal sex were independent factors affecting cesarean outcome. Two models were established, depending on whether the sex of the fetus was included. The area under the ROC curve of two models were 0.755 and 0.748, respectively. We verified externally, and the area under the ROC curve of two models were 0.758 and 0.758, respectively. The calibration plots demonstrated a good correlation. DCA demonstrated that two models had clinical application value. The online web servers were constructed based on the nomograms for convenient clinical use. Conclusions: These two models can be used as useful tools to assess the risk of cesarean for low-risk Chinese nulliparous undergoing induction of labor.

Abstract Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has become alarming public health concern. It is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and increased risk of postpartum type 2 diabetes. Pre-pregnant body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and other anthropometric parameters have been proposed to predict GDM. However, visceral fat thickness can better reflect the distribution of body fat, and may more accurately predict the risk of GDM. Visceral fat thickness may lead to insulin resistance by regulating the adipose-derived exosomes miRNA-148 family, which affect the development of GDM. Evidence from prospective cohort studies on visceral fat thickness as a predictor of GDM and the possible mechanisms is still insufficient. Methods In this prospective cohort study, we will recruit 3000 women at first antenatal visit between 4 and 12 weeks of gestation. Baseline socio-demographic factors and visceral fat thickness will be assessed by questionnaire form and the ultrasonic measurement, respectively. At 20 weeks of gestation, 10 ml blood samples will be drawn and we will extract adipose-derived exosomes miRNA on the basis of nested case-control study. GDM will be screened at 24–28 weeks’ gestation and the expression of miRNA-148 family between pregnant women with GDM and without GDM will be analyzed. Intermediary analysis will be used to investigate whether visceral fat thickness can predict GDM by regulating adipose-derived exosomes miRNA-148 family. Discussion We hypothesized that visceral fat thickness may predict GDM by regulating the miRNA-148 family of adipose-derived exosomes. The findings of the study will assist in further clarifying the pathophysiological mechanism of GDM, it will also provide technical support for effective screening of high-risk pregnant women with GDM.

Large-capacity hydropower transmission from southwestern China to load centers via ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) or ultra-high voltage alternating current (UHVAC) transmission lines is an important measure of the accommodation of large-scale hydropower in China. The East China Grid (ECG) is the main hydropower receiver of the west-east power transmission channel in China. Moreover, it has been subject to a rapidly increasing rate of hydropower integration over the past decade. Currently, large-scale outer hydropower is one of the primary ECG power sources. However, the integration of rapidly increasing outer hydropower into the power grid is subject to a series of severe drawbacks. Therefore, this study considered the load demands and hydropower transmission characteristics for the analysis of several major problems and the determination of appropriate solutions. The power supply-demand balance problem, hydropower transmission schedule problem, and peak- shaving problem were considered in this study. Correspondingly, three solutions are suggested in this paper, which include coordination between the outer hydropower and local power sources, an inter-provincial power complementary operation, and the introduction of a market mechanism. The findings of this study can serve as a basis to ensure that the ECG effectively receives an increased amount of outer hydropower in the future. In order not to sacrifice nitrided layer thickness and reduce brittle compound layer thickness, Ni-coated pretreatment was carried out with electrodeposition on a pure iron surface, followed by gas nitriding. The brittle compound layer thickness of duplex surface treated samples was reduced, and the nitrided layer thickness increased to 320 μm. The microhardness was 4 times harder, and the wear loss was reduced by 68% compared with the original material. The results indicate that Ni-coated pretreatment could effectively improve microhardness and wear resistance and realize the controlled microstructure of a brittle compound layer of pure iron without compromising nitrided layer thickness. Ni coating plays an important role in ammonia adsorption and decomposition, and in the transfer of active nitrogen atoms during nitriding.

Under the effects of rapid changes in current social environment and family, family structure gradually changes from past extended family and stem family to nuclear family for matching modern social environment. Preschool children's learning is affected by school education as well as family education. When different family socioeconomic status would affect children's cognitive ability to form the stratification of cognitive ability development, such a phenomenon is growing apart from the philosophy of equality of educational opportunity. Aiming at parents of children in preschool education units in china, as the research objects, total 360 copies of questionnaire are distributed, and 237 valid copies are retrieved, with the retrieval rate 66%. The research results are summarized as below. 1. Children with higher family socioeconomic status present better cognitive ability, explaining the actual effect of family socioeconomic status on current children's cognitive ability to form educational stratification as well as unequal opportunity for preschool education. 2. The higher family socioeconomic status shows the richer family educational resources. It is therefore inferred that children with higher family socioeconomic status reveal better cognitive ability, possibly because of richer family educational resources allowing children receiving more cultural, social, or financial capital stimulation to enhance more cognitive ability. According to the result to proposed suggestions, it is expected to enhance domestic ideal of equality of preschool educational opportunity, allow domestic education parallel to various advanced countries, and achieve the responsibility for cultivating quality citizen in the future. Objective - The present study investigates the impact of augmented reality (AR) on the learning abilities of primary and secondary students at the cognitive and affective levels. Methodology/Technique - The data of 59 relevant domestic and international studies between 2010 and 2021, including 83 studies and 4123 samples, were analyzed through CMA for meta-analysis. Finding - The overall effect size of AR technology on the teaching effectiveness of primary and secondary school students was 0.598, which had a positive contribution. The impact of AR technology on primary and secondary school students was stronger at the affective levels than at the cognitive levels. Novelty - In the process of learning with AR-assisted resources for primary and secondary school students, the school levels, teaching methods, and resource types did not differ significantly, and the differences in teaching outcomes were manifested in the different subject content. The interaction between the natural environmental and socioeconomic factors is crucial for assessing the dynamics of plateau ecosystems. Therefore, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and CatBoost-SHAP model were employed to investigate changes in the ecological quality and their driving factors in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China, from 2001 to 2021. The results showed an increase from 0.44 in 2001 to 0.71 in 2021 in the average RSEI for the Diqing Prefecture, indicating an overall upward trend in the ecological quality. Spatial analysis shows the percentage of the area covered by different levels of RSEI and their temporal changes. The results revealed that “good” ecological quality accounted for the largest proportion of the study area, at 42.77%, followed by “moderate” at 21.93%, and “excellent” at 16.62%. “Fair” quality areas accounted for 16.11% and “poor” quality areas only 2.57%. The study of ecological and socioeconomic drivers based on the CatBoost-SHAP framework also indicated that natural climate factors have a greater impact on ecological quality than socioeconomic factors; however, this effect differed significantly with altitude. The findings suggest that, in addition to strengthening climate monitoring, further advancements in ecological engineering are required to ensure the sustainable development of the ecosystem and the continuous improvement of the environmental quality in the Diqing Prefecture.

Soil salinization significantly impacts the ecological environment and agricultural production, posing a threat to plant growth. Currently, there are over 400 varieties of Bougainvillea with horticultural value internationally. However, research on the differences in salt tolerance among Bougainvillea varieties is still insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the physiological responses and tolerance differences of various Bougainvillea varieties under different concentrations of salt stress, reveal the effects of salt stress on their growth and physiology, and study the adaptation mechanisms of these varieties related to salt stress. The experimental materials consisted of five varieties of Bougainvillea. Based on the actual salinity concentrations in natural saline-alkali soils, we used a pot-controlled salt method for the experiment, with four treatment concentrations set: 0.0% (w/v) (CK), 0.2% (w/v), 0.4% (w/v), and 0.6% (w/v). After the Bougainvillea plants grew stably, salt stress was applied and the growth, physiology, and salt tolerance of the one-year-old plants were systematically measured and assessed. The key findings were as follows: Salt stress inhibited the growth and biomass of the five varieties of Bougainvillea; the ‘Dayezi’ variety showed severe salt damage, while the ‘Shuihong’ variety exhibited minimal response. As the salt concentration and duration of salt stress increase, the trends of the changes in antioxidant enzyme activity and osmotic regulation systems in the leaves of the five Bougainvillea species differ. Membrane permeability and the production of membrane oxidative products showed an upward trend with stress severity. The salt tolerance of the five varieties of Bougainvillea was comprehensively evaluated through principal component analysis. It was found that the ‘Shuihong’ variety exhibited the highest salt tolerance, followed by the ‘Lvyehuanghua’, ‘Xiaoyezi’, ‘Tazi’, and ‘Dayezi’ varieties. Therefore, Bougainvillea ‘Shuihong’, ‘Lvyehuanghua’, and ‘Xiaoyezi’ are recommended for extensive cultivation in saline-alkali areas. The investigation focuses primarily on how Bougainvillea varieties respond to salt stress from the perspectives of growth and physiological levels. Future research could explore the molecular mechanisms behind the responses to and tolerance of different Bougainvillea varieties as to salt stress, providing a more comprehensive understanding and basis for practical applications.

This study investigated the impact of Bacillus subtilis on plant growth and the rhizosphere microbial community in rose cultivation under saline–alkaline stress. Saline–alkaline stress was simulated with varying salt and alkali levels. Bacillus subtilis was introduced, and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was conducted to analyze the root microbial community. Introduction of Bacillus subtilis significantly promoted rose growth and mitigated saline–alkaline stress effects. Gene sequencing revealed increased abundance of microbial genera, such as Tessaracoccus, Intrasporangium, Glutamicibacter, Agrobacterium, Saccharibacteria, Falsochrobactrum, Mesorhizobium, Bacillus, Ensifer, and Ornithinicoccus, under normal and saline–alkaline conditions, while functional changes in colony abundance were observed under different environments through PICRUST2 analysis. Bacillus subtilis demonstrated potential in enhancing rose growth and stress resistance under saline–alkaline conditions, affecting the regulation of the root microbial community. This study provides insights for improving soil conditions and enhancing plant adaptability in saline–alkaline regions.

This study utilized the platform for ensemble forecasting of species distributions, biomod2, to predict and quantitatively analyze the distribution changes of Zelkova schneideriana Hand.-Mazz. under different climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) based on climate and land-use data. This study evaluated the geographic range changes in future distribution areas and the results indicated that, under both SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, the distribution area of Zelkova schneideriana would be reduced, showing a trend towards migration to higher latitudes and elevations. Particularly, in the more extreme SSP5-8.5 scenario, the contraction of the distribution area was more pronounced, accompanied by more significant migration characteristics. Furthermore, the ecological structure within the distribution area of Zelkova schneideriana also experienced significant changes, with an increasing degree of fragmentation. The variables of Bio6 (minimum temperature of the coldest month), Bio2 (mean diurnal temperature range), Bio15 (precipitation seasonality), and elevation exhibited important influences on the distribution of Zelkova schneideriana, with temperature being particularly significant. Changes in land use, especially the conversion of cropland, had a significant impact on the species’ habitat. These research findings highlight the distributional pressures faced by Zelkova schneideriana in the future, emphasizing the crucial need for targeted conservation measures to protect this species and similar organisms.

By constructing a rural digital design ecosystem, this paper develops ecological villages through design empowerment, enhances the carbon sequestration benefits of plants in rural areas, and strengthens rural vitality. Combined with the carbon sequestration benefits of street trees in Bulao Village in Nanjing, the feasibility of the digital design ecosystem in rural planning was verified, and the ways and methods of rural environmental renewal were explored. Through the existing literature, the possibility of constructing a digital design ecosystem was deduced, the theoretical framework was derived, field research was carried out in the village of Bulao, the carbon sequestration benefit of street trees was quantified by the i-Tree model, and a structure chart of street trees, including breast diameter, tree height, type, etc., was formed. There were 35 species of street trees in Bulao Village, belonging to 33 genera in 22 families, including 19 species of trees, a total of 312 trees, and 16 species of shrubs. The street trees’ total carbon sink benefit was equivalent to RMB 30,327.47, a single street tree’s average carbon sequestration benefit was RMB 96.86, and the average CO2 absorption was 164.64 kg. The average CO2 absorption and single benefit of elm trees were the highest, reaching 465.48 kg·plant−1 and 186.81 RMB·plant−1, respectively. The CO2 absorption (185.13 kg) and the average benefit per plant (RMB 109.48) of the camphor tree were lower than those of the elm. However, because their number far exceeded that of elms, their total carbon sequestration benefit contribution was the highest, reaching RMB 25,837.28, accounting for 85.19% of the total benefit. In addition, the contribution rates of elm and willow’s total annual carbon sequestration benefits were also relatively high, reaching RMB 747.24 and RMB 710.04, respectively, accounting for 2.46% and 2.34% of the total benefits. This paper uses the digital design ecosystem’s theoretical framework to quantify street trees’ carbon sequestration benefits through field research. It optimizes and improves the plant allocation of parking lots in Bulao Village from the ecology and carbon sink perspectives. Practice shows that inheriting the connotation values of rural culture, improving the quality of the rural environment, and increasing residents’ and tourists’ sense of belonging and identity to the countryside are conducive to jointly promoting sustainable rural development against the background of “dual carbon”. Combining art design with quantitative scientific methods of ecological environment indicators provides a reference for future rural development.

The air pollutant NO2 is one of the major constraints on plant growth, and the ecological value of the ornamental plant Bougainvillea glabra can be weakened by NO2. In this study, an indoor 4 μL·L−1 NO2 simulated fumigation test was conducted with three treatments, CK (normal growth with clean air), T1 (4 μL·L−1 NO2 + 8 h/d), and T2 (4 μL·L−1 NO2 + 24 h/d), which were set up with considerations for time and concentration. The results demonstrated that most of the morphological parameters of B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’, except for the floral organs, were decreased in the root, stem, leaf, and bract. Continuous fumigation significantly attenuated the growth rate and reduced the water and pigment contents of organs. Excessive NO2 reduced the number and transfer rate of photoelectrons by destroying the photosynthetic reaction center, which in turn weakened photosynthesis, but the plants with intermittent fumigation recovered after fumigation. The Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival curve displayed median survival periods of 41 and 55.5 h for T1 and T2, respectively, and the morphological structure and most of the indicators of photosynthetic reaction centers changed significantly during stress. Acute injury to B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’ was caused by 4 μL·L−1 NO2, and B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’ had limited ability to regulate high concentrations of NO2 acute stress.

The rapid socio-economic development and urbanization in China have led to a decline in air quality. Therefore, the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of urban air pollution, as well as its formation mechanisms and influencing factors, have become important areas of research in atmospheric environment studies. This paper focuses on nine monitoring sites in Nanjing, where concentration data for six air pollutants and vegetation index data were collected from 2013 to 2021. The objective of this study is to investigate the changes in air pollutants and vegetation index over time and space, as well as their relationship with each other, and to assess the social and environmental impacts of air pollution. The findings reveal a spatial distribution pattern of air pollution in Nanjing that exhibits significant variability, with pollutant concentrations decreasing from the city center towards the surrounding areas. Notably, the main urban area has lower air quality compared to the peripheral regions. The results obtained from best-fit linear regression models and correlation heatmaps demonstrate a strong correlation (coefficient of determination, R2 > 0.5) between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and pollutants such as SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10, and O3 within a radial distance of 2 km from the air pollutant monitoring sites. These findings indicate that NDVI can be an effective indicator for assessing the distribution and concentrations of air pollutants. Negative correlations between NDVI and socio-economic indicators are observed under relatively consistent natural conditions, including climate and terrain. Therefore, the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of NDVI can provide valuable insights not only into socio-economic growth but also into the levels and locations of air pollution concentrations.

The rapid urbanization and growing number of motor vehicles in China have led to a significant increase in NO2 emissions, posing a severe threat to the air quality in cities. Road traffic pollution has emerged as a significant environmental issue in China. Exploring the utilization of landscape plants for air pollutant mitigation and assessing the influence of various plant concentrations on reducing air pollution holds great significance in urban ecological environment protection and urban development. Through field surveys and data collection in January 2022, the objectives of this study are to explore the relationship between road meteorological factors and the reduction in air pollutant concentrations in Nanjing city’s road green spaces and to investigate the influence of plant configuration in road green spaces on pollutant concentration. The findings demonstrate a distinct positive correlation between road traffic volume during winter peak hours and the concentration of NO2 pollution gas. Furthermore, meteorological factors, including temperature and light intensity, strongly correlate with air pollutant concentrations. Open green spaces with ventilated structures and high tree planting density (deciduous trees are preferred) exhibit optimal purification effects. Excessive or insufficient planting density hinders the purifying function of green belts. In conclusion, our research on plant configurations and air pollutant concentrations in Nanjing City during the winter suggests that the recommended road green space plant configuration in Nanjing is a combination of arbor (deciduous tree), shrub, and grass.

Exogenous substances can alleviate plant damage under adverse conditions. In order to explore whether different concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) can play a role in the resistance of Bougainvillea × buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) stress and the relevant mechanisms of their effects, different concentrations of SA were applied locally under the control experiment condition of 4.0 μL·L−1 NO2, and the role of SA in alleviating injury was studied. The findings noted a significant increase in metabolic adaptations and antioxidant enzyme activities following 0.25–0.75 mM SA application (p < 0.05), except 1 mM. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in particular increased by 21.88% and 59.71%, respectively. Such an increase led to effective control of the reduction in photosynthetic pigments and the photosynthetic rate and protection of the structural stability of chloroplasts and other organelles. In addition, the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) increased by 83.85%, and the content of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) decreased by 29.23% in nitrogen metabolism. Concurrently, a principal component analysis (PCA) and a membership function analysis further indicated that 0.75 mM SA provided the most notable improvement in NO2 resistance among the different gradients. These findings suggest that 0.25–0.75 mM SA can relieve the stress at 4 μL·L−1 NO2 injury by effectively improving the antioxidant enzyme activity and nitrogen metabolizing enzyme activity, protecting the photosynthetic system and cell structure, but 1 mM SA had the opposite effect. In the future, the specific reasons for inhibition of SA at high concentrations and the comprehensive effects of the application of other exogenous compounds should be further studied.

With a growing economy, the living standard of people has improved which has led to increased use of urban motor vehicles globally. Consequently, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has increased in the ambient air, becoming a major pollutant in urban areas. Plant leaves can absorb, adsorb and fix nitrogen oxides to some extent. Interestingly, NO2 has been recognized as a positive/negative regulator of plant growth. To comprehensively understand the effect of NO2-induced pollution on plants, Bougainvillea spectabilis seedlings were fumigated with different concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for a short period in the current study. Further, the induced morphological, physiological, and biochemical changes were measured in the treated as well as untreated seedlings. NO2 exposure caused yellow-brown spotting on the leaf blades in B. spectabilis, which could be the symptoms of oxidative damage. Our findings also reflected the changes in antioxidant enzyme activity and peroxidation of membrane lipids. In addition, the levels of osmotic regulatory substances were also found to be altered to different degrees. In addition, the activities of nitrogen metabolism-related enzymes varied, mainly affecting amino acid metabolism. Overall, the current study would provide a theoretical and scientific basis for selecting and allocating plants in NO2-contaminated areas to manage the pollutants level.

Ginkgo biloba, a relict plant, has been popularized and planted in most areas of China for its leaves, timber, and fruits. In the present study, the dynamic changes in leaf color, leaf pigment content during the color change period, and photosynthetic characteristics in different growth periods were studied to explore the coloring mechanism and adaptability of five late-deciduous superior Beijing G. biloba cultivars (LD1–LD5). The results showed that the leaf color change of each superior cultivar was relatively stable, and the discoloration period of LD3 and LD5 was later than that of others. From September to November, the chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content in all superior cultivars showed a downward trend, except in LD3, in which the pigment content was slightly higher in October than in September. Except in LD3 and LD4, the ratio of carotene content to total chlorophyll content in other cultivars slightly decreased in October. In May, the photosynthetic capacity of LD5 was stronger than that of other cultivars. The photosynthetic capacity of LD3 was strong in July and October. Our results imply that LD3 and LD5 are suitable for mixed planting with common G. biloba to increase the overall leaf color viewing period. Ginkgo biloba leaves turn yellow in autumn because of both a decrease in the chlorophyll content after leaf senescence and an increase in the Car content during leaf senescence. Although LD5 presented rapid seedling emergence, LD3 grew faster during the vigorous and late growth stages and is thus suitable for agricultural production.

Bougainvillea L. (Nyctaginaceae) is a South American native woody flowering shrub of high ornamental, economic, and medicinal value which is susceptible to cold damage. We sequenced the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of B. glabra and B. spectabilis, two morphologically similar Bougainvillea species differing in cold resistance. Both genomes showed a typical quadripartite structure consisting of one large single-copy region, one small single-copy region, and two inverted repeat regions. The cp genome size of B. glabra and B. spectabilis was 154,520 and 154,542 bp, respectively, with 131 genes, including 86 protein-coding, 37 transfer RNA, and 8 ribosomal RNA genes. In addition, the genomes contained 270 and 271 simple sequence repeats, respectively, with mononucleotide repeats being the most abundant. Eight highly variable sites (psbN, psbJ, rpoA, rpl22, psaI, trnG-UCC, ndhF, and ycf1) with high nucleotide diversity were identified as potential molecular markers. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship between B. glabra and B. spectabilis. These findings not only contribute to understanding the mechanism by which the cp genome responds to low-temperature stress in Bougainvillea and elucidating the evolutionary characteristics and phylogenetic relationships among Bougainvillea species, but also provide important evidence for the accurate identification and breeding of superior cold-tolerant Bougainvillea cultivars.

Climate change, a global biodiversity threat, largely influences the geographical distribution patterns of species. China is abundant in woody landscape plants. However, studies on the differences in the adaptive changes of plants under climate change between northern and southern China are unavailable. Therefore, herein, the MaxEnt model was used to predict changes in the suitable distribution area (SDA) and dominant environmental variables of 29 tree species under two climate change scenarios, the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) 126 and 585, based on 29 woody plant species and 20 environmental variables in northern and southern China to assess the differences in the adaptive changes of plants between the two under climate change. Temperature factors dominated the SDA distribution of both northern and southern plants. Southern plants are often dominated by one climatic factor, whereas northern plants are influenced by a combination of climatic factors. Northern plants are under greater pressure from SDA change than southern plants, and their SDA shrinkage tendency is significantly higher. However, no significant difference was observed between northern and southern plants in SDA expansion, mean SDA elevation, and latitudinal change in the SDA mass center. Future climate change will drive northern and southern plants to migrate to higher latitudes rather than to higher elevations. Therefore, future climate change has varying effects on plant SDAs within China. The climate change intensity will drive northern landscape plants to experience greater SDA-change-related pressure than southern landscape plants. Therefore, northern landscape plants must be heavily monitored and protected.

Xanthoceras sorbifolium, belonging to the family Sapindaceae, has a beautiful tree shape, elegant leaves, large and many brightly colored flowers, and a long flowering duration. This plant is widely applied in gardens. In this study, 33 cultivars of Xanthoceras sorbifolium were selected from the perspective of ornamental properties, and their phenotypic traits, such as leaves, flowers, and branches, were measured and analyzed, and their phenotypic diversity was comprehensively evaluated using principal component analysis, in order to investigate the phenotypic diversity characteristics of Xanthoceras sorbifolium. The results showed that the genetic diversity index of the qualitative traits varied from 0.14 to 1.50, and that of quantitative traits varied from 1.76 to 2.05. The quantitative traits were more diverse than the qualitative traits. The coefficient of variation of the qualitative traits ranged from 16.90% to 57.96%, and that of quantitative traits ranged from 12.92% to 32.87%. The phenotypic traits of the tested cultivars had relatively rich variation. Furthermore, the level of the phenotypic diversity index of Xanthoceras sorbifolium was not consistent with the level of coefficient of variation, indicating large variation and uneven distribution of variation. Through principal component analysis, 17 quantitative characters were extracted into five principal components, with a cumulative contribution rate of 79.82%, representing the primary information on the quantitative characters of ornamental Xanthoceras sorbifolium cultivars. The F value of the 33 samples ranged from –2.79 to 1.93, and the comprehensive scores of seven cultivars were greater than 1, indicating that these cultivars had rich phenotypic diversity. Therefore, the screening, development, and utilization of fine germplasm resources of Xanthoceras sorbifolium should focus on these cultivars. The 33 cultivars were subsequently clustered into five categories through systematic clustering. The cluster analysis provided references for breeding ornamental Xanthoceras sorbifolium cultivars with different utilization values, such as large white flowers, small red flowers, large red flowers, large orange flowers, and double-petaled flowers.

Abstract Carpinus betulus and Carpinus putoensis are precious species in the world. Studies on the ecosystem function of the two species are rare. This study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of C. betulus and C. putoensis to NO2 stress and their natural recovery. C. betulus and C. putoensis seedlings underwent fumigation with 12.0 mg/m3 NO2 for 0, 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Then, the plants were allowed to recover at room temperature for 30 d. Physiological and biochemical changes in the leaves were compared between the two species. In terms of peroxidase (POD) activity, the damage response of C. betulus under NO2 stress appeared later than that of C. putoensis. The soluble protein content of C. betulus was noticeably higher than that of C. putoensis, and C. betulus exhibited more stable membrane lipoperoxidation. The tendency of the changes in nitrate reductase of C. betulus was less noticeable than that of C. putoensis. The variation amplitudes of N, K, Mg, Zn and Mn in the leaves of C. putoensis were greater than those of C. betulus. C. putoensis showed more sensitive metabolisms in response to NO2 stress compared with C. betulus. High-concentration NO2 caused damage to C. betulus and C. putoensis was reversible, and both species returned to normal growth via their own metabolism after 30-d recovery. The results of this study may provide useful reference data for quantitative assessment of the ecosystem function of C. betulus and C. putoensis and for their scientific application in urban greening.

Thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine as an effective pharmacophore has been extensively studied. However, its 2,6-substituted derivatives are rarely reported. In the present study, eighteen 2,6-substituted thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidine derivatives containing electrophilic warheads were designed based on the first known Fibroblast growth factor receptor-4 (FGFR4) inhibitor Blu9931. Unexpectedly, all of the derivatives exhibited negligible activity against FGFR4. However, most of the target compounds exhibited antiproliferative activities against four human cancer cell lines, including A431, NCI-H1975, Ramos and SNU-16. Compound 12 showed the most potent antiproliferative activities on the above four cell lines with IC50 values of 1.4 μM, 1.2 μM, 0.6 μM, and 2.6 μM, respectively. Additionally, the antiproliferative activity of 12 against MDA-MB-221 proved that 12 had the selectivity towards certain tumor cell lines. Bougainvillea, a widely used ornamental plant, is mainly propagated by cuttings and tissue culture. Still, large-scale production of Bougainvillea is often difficult because of rooting issues. Therefore, based on an early establishment of the regeneration system for tissue culture in Bougainvillea by our research team, we further studied its rooting mechanism. It was observed that the morphology and anatomical structure of Bougainvillea buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ contained endogenous hormones, such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA3), and zeatin-riboside (ZR), including peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and IAA-oxidase (IAAO) activities. Following the culture, Days 0–15 consisted of the induction and initiation stages, while Days 15–25 included the expression stages. No latent root primordium was found in the Bougainvillea plantlet, which belonged to the induced rooting type. The root primordium was derived from callus cells generated by divisions of parenchyma cells in the basic tissues. It was found that the changes in the POD, PPO, and IAAO activities were closely related to the formation of adventitious roots (AR), in which the highest rooting values occurred during the transition from the initiation stage to the expression stage, whereas the endogenous IAA and ABA contents had negative and positive correlations during the induction, initiation, and expression stages.; The values of GA3 and ZR also peaked during the transition from the initiation to the expression stage. ZR and GA3 were found to promote adventitious root formation, while ABA inhibited it. The IAA/ABA, ABA/ GA3, and IAA/ZR ratios also shifted at the onset of the expression stage of AR, indicating these values were closely related to their occurrence. Overall, this study provides the basis for further research considering AR formation in Bougainvillea, and the propagation of various Bougainvillea varieties.

Highly transparent hydrogel has been proposed as promising soft corneal contact lenses. In this paper, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels with high transparence were prepared by dissolving PVA powders into dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) aqueous solutions and followed by freeze–thaw cycle technology. The various influences such as PVA concentration, freeze–thaw cycle times and DMSO concentration on the tensile mechanical and transparent characteristics of the PVA hydrogel have been investigated. Results of the tensile mechanical investigation revealed that the tensile strength of PVA hydrogel increased with the rise of PVA concentration and freeze–thaw cycle times, but decreased with the increasing DMSO concentration. The results of optical tests indicated that the light transmittance of the PVA hydrogel increased with the increasing light wavelength, PVA and DMSO concentrations. Hydroxyapatite filled polyetheretherketone functional gradient biomaterials (HA/PEEK FGBm) were fabricated through layer-stacking method and in combination with hot press moulding technology. The influences of total HA content, HA concentration difference between adjacent layers (HCDBAL) and annealing treatment on the tensile properties of HA/PEEK FGBm were investigated. The results indicated that the tensile strength and tensile fracture strain of HA/PEEK FGBm decreased with the increasing total HA content. Contrarily, the tensile modulus of HA/PEEK FGBm increases with the rise of total HA content. The tensile strength and modulus of the HA/PEEK FGBm first increased and then decreased with the rise of HCDBAL. Such change in behaviour was more obvious for the HA/ PEEK FGBm with 30% total HA content. Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is one of the most promising orthopedic implant biomaterials. In this paper, CF reinforced PEEK biocomposites were fabricated by hot press molding technology. The influence of the CF surface modification on the flexural mechanical properties of CF/PEEK biocomposites was investigated. Studies on the flexural mechanical properties of CF/PEEK biocomposites revealed that the flexural stress-strain behavior of the biocomposites possessed linear elastic characteristics. The fracture mechanism of the biocomposites was predominated by brittle rupture. Both flexural strength and modulus of the biocomposites obviously increased with the rise of CF content. The influence degree of different CF modification on the flexural properties of CF/PEEK biocomposites increased with the rise of CF content. Moreover, the CF modified by concentrated HNO3 is beneficial for the flexural strength of the CF/PEEK biocomposites improvement. Conversely, CF modified by KH-560 coupling agent played an adverse influence on the flexural strength of the biocomposites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Owing to the wide variation in their morphological characteristics across diverse geographies, the identification and classification of plants in the Nymphaea genus are challenging. Therefore, the present study investigated the pollen morphological characteristics of hardy water lilies (N. ‘Rose Arey’, N. ‘Perry’s Fire Opal’, and N. ‘Peter Slocum’), their relationship with species classification and system evolution, and their cross-compatibility with three strains of Nymphaeahybrid (NH-1, NH-2, and NH-3), a tropical waterlily. Pollen of the hardy water lilies was single-grained, oblate, and 18.31–20.47 × 32.51–37.64 μm. The pollen apertures were of the ring-groove type, and the pollen exine ornamentation was rod- and tumour-shaped. Pollen grains of different species differed in size, the obviousness of tumour ornamentation, and the size and density of rod-like ornamentation; their germination rates also differed significantly. Viabilities of N. ‘Rose Arey’ and N. ‘Peter Slocum’ pollen were the highest and lowest, respectively. According to the artificial pollination results, all hybrid combinations except three (NH-1 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’, NH-2 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’, and NH-3 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’) bore seeds; combinations with NH-2 as the female parent and N. ‘Rose Arey’ as the male parent had the highest seed-setting rates.

Functional graded materials provided us one new concept for artificial articular cartilage design with graded component and graded structure. In this article, a novel functional material design was proposed by functionalizing hydroxyapatite (HA) particles in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel. The goal of the present study was to fabricate a multilayer gradient HA/PVA gel biocomposites through layer-by-layer casting method combining with freeze/thaw cycle technology and establish a mechanical model to predict the compressive mechanical properties of multilayer gradient gel biocomposites. The results showed that the compressive strength of the multilayer gradient gel biocomposites increased with the rise of HA content, but it presented decreasing trend with the rise of interlayer gradient concentration of HA particles. Furthermore, the compressive strength of multilayer gradient biocomposites would be approximately predicted by the established mechanical model. The maximum error between theoretical compressive strength predicted by the model and the experimental strength is less than 7%. On the other hand, the compressive mechanical properties of multilayer gradient composites could be designed and controlled by the mechanical model as established in this study. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at a high concentration is among the most common and harmful air pollutants. The present study aimed to explore the physiological responses of plants exposed to NO2. A total of 41 plants were classified into 13 functional groups according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification system. The plants were exposed to 6 μL/L NO2 in an open-top glass chamber. The physiological parameters (chlorophyll (Chl) content, peroxidase (POD) activity, and soluble protein and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations) and leaf mineral ion contents (nitrogen (N+), phosphorus (P+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), manganese (Mn2+), and zinc (Zn2+)) of 41 garden plants were measured. After NO2 exposure, the plants were subsequently transferred to a natural environment for a 30-d recovery to determine whether they could recover naturally and resume normal growth. The results showed that NO2 polluted the plants and that NO2 exposure affected leaf Chl contents in most functional groups. Increases in both POD activity and soluble protein and MDA concentrations as well as changes in mineral ion concentrations could act as signals for inducing defense responses. Furthermore, antioxidant status played an important role in plant protection against NO2-induced oxidative damage. NO2 poses a pollution risk to plant systems, and antioxidant status plays an important role in plant protection against NO2-induced oxidative damage. In conditions of strong air pollution, more evergreen plants may be considered in landscape design, particularly in seasonal regions. The results of this study may provide useful data for the selection of landscaping plants in NO2 polluted areas.
