Abstract

Spot blotch has frequently been observed in volunteer wheat plants in Sichuan (China). A fungus isolated from leaf lesions was identified as Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoemaker, based on morphology and comparisons of DNA sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (EF-1α), and β-tubulin (BT) genes. Volunteer wheat plants were found to have a major role in B. sorokiniana oversummering in Sichuan, which makes their eradication important for reducing the inoculum that starts disease outbreaks. Abstract

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on Eulerian-Eulerian approach coupled with granular kinetics theory was adopted to investigate the hydrodynamics and flow structures in a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser column. A new approach to specify the inlet boundary conditions was proposed in this study to simulate gas-solids flow in CFB risers more accurately. Simulation results were compared with the experimental data, and good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data was observed under different operating conditions, which indicates the effectiveness and accuracy of the CFD model with the proposed inlet boundary conditions. The results also illustrate a clear core annulus structure in the CFB riser under all operating conditions both experimentally and numerically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The past population dynamics of four domestic and one wild species of bovine were estimated using Bayesian skyline plots, a coalescent Markov chain Monte Carlo method that does not require an assumed parametric model of demographic history. Four domestic species share a recent rapid population expansion not visible in the wild African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). The estimated timings of the expansions are consistent with the archaeological records of domestication.
