The Government has reached a deal with public sector unions that will allow existing public-sector workers, such as teachers, to retire at 60 on a full pension. The Government had planned to force public-sector workers to either work until they were 65 or accept a reduced pension but threats from unions have forced the Government to back down. However, those who become public-sector workers after 2007 will have to work until they are 65.
