4. Simple Behavior of Primary Cross Sections for Low Mass Particles in p-pbar Collisions at y=0 and sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

Abstract

A set of inclusive cross sections at zero rapidity is presented for p-pbar interactions at center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. Six particle cross sections are corrected for secondary contributions from decays of higher mass resonances in order to produce a set of primary cross sections. The primary cross sections per spin state are well described by d(sigma^p)/dy|_(y=0)= 0.721*(pi*lambdabar_(pi)^2)*exp(-m/T), where m is the particle rest mass, T=hbar*c/r_h, and r_h=0.97 fm. The deuterium production cross section is also described if r_h is replaced by r_A=r_h*A^(1/3). The same exponential in m and T describes primary charm fractions in e+e- collisions at least up to the J/Psi mass. There is no significant evidence for strangeness or charm suppression if only primary production of light hadrons is considered. There is evidence that the primary cross section for each particle may have the same value for pp and pbar-p collisions and that it may have nearly constant values between sqrt(s)=63 GeV and sqrt(s)=1800 GeV. Fits to the final state transverse momenta of the particles using a gas model favor a temperature T=132 MeV, a chemical potential mu=129 MeV, and a transverse flow of the gas with beta_f=0.27., 20 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and non-strange hadrons produced in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p$\Lambda$ vs $\pi^-\pi^-$ correlations. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

Abstract

The E895 Collaboration at the Brookhaven AGS has performed a systematic investigation of Au+Au collisions at 2-8 AGeV, using a large-acceptance Time Projection Chamber. In addition to extensive measurements of particle flow, spectra, two-particle interferometry, and strangeness production, we have performed novel hybrid analyses, including azimuthally-sensitive pion HBT, extraction of the six-dimensional pion phasespace density, and a first measurement of the Lambda-proton correlation function., Presented at Quark Matter 2001, 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We have measured the sideward flow of neutral strange ($K^0_s$) mesons in 6 AGeV Au + Au collisions. A prominent anti-flow signal is observed for an impact parameter range (b $\lesssim 7$ fm) which spans central and mid-central events. Since the $K^0_s$ scattering cross section is relatively small in nuclear matter, this observation suggests that the in-medium kaon vector potential plays an important role in high density nuclear matter., 5 pages, including 3 figs

Abstract

Directed flow measurements for $\Lambda$-hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2, 4, and 6 AGeV; $b < 5 - 6$ fm). The measurements indicate that $\Lambda$-hyperons flow consistently in the same direction and with smaller magnitudes than those of protons. Such a strong positive flow [for $\Lambda$s] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the $\Lambda$-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio $\Lambda$/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations ($\sim 2/3$) from the quark counting rule at 2 AGeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy., Comment: 5 pages including 4 Figs. Abstract

It is shown that the Fisher Droplet Model (FDM), percolation and nuclear multifragmentation share the common features of reducibility (stochasticity in multiplicity distributions) and thermal scaling (one-fragment production probabilities are Boltzmann factors). Barriers obtained, for cluster production on percolation lattices, from the Boltzmann factors show a power-law dependence on cluster size with an exponent of 0.42 +- 0.02. The EOS Au multifragmentation data yield barriers with a power-law exponent of 0.68 +- 0.03. Abstract

The mean transverse kinetic energies of the fragments formed in the interaction of 1 A GeV Au+C have been determined. An energy balance argument indicates the presence of a collective energy which increases in magnitude with increasing multiplicity and accounts for nearly half of the measured mean transverse kinetic energy. The radial flow velocity associated with the collective energy yields estimates for the time required to expand to the freeze-out volume. Isentropic trajectories in the temperature-density plane are shown for the expansion and indicate that the system goes through the critical region at the same multiplicities as deduced from a statistical analysis. Here, the expansion time is approximately 70 fm/c.

Abstract

An exclusive study of the interaction of 1{ital A}GeV Au with C shows a separability into two stages: a prompt stage involving emission of most {ital Z}=1 and some {ital Z}=2 particles and a second stage involving the decay of an equilibrated remnant, which typically undergoes multifragmentation. The mean mass, charge, excitation energy, and the initial temperature {ital T}{sub {ital i}} of the remnant have been determined as a function of the total charge multiplicity, {ital m}, as has the freeze-out temperature {ital T}{sub {ital f}}. Both {ital T}{sub {ital i}} and {ital T}{sub {ital f}} increase linearly with {ital m} and their values at the critical point have been determined. {ital T}{sub {ital f}} rises monotonically with excitation energy as expected for a continuous phase transition. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}

Abstract

The yield for the multistrange Xi(-) hyperon has been measured in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions via reconstruction of its decay products pi(-) and Lambda, the latter also being reconstructed from its daughter tracks of pi(-) and p. The measurement is rather close to the threshold for Xi(-) production and therefore provides an important test of model predictions. The measured yield for Xi(-) and Lambda are compared for several centralities. In central collisions the Xi(-) yield is found to be in excellent agreement with statistical and transport model predictions, suggesting that multistrange hadron production approaches chemical equilibrium in high baryon density nuclear matter.

Abstract

Source images are extracted from two-particle correlations constructed from strange and nonstrange hadrons produced in 6A GeV Au+Au collisions. Very different source images result from pp vs p Lambda vs pi(-)pi(-) correlations. Scaling by transverse mass can describe the apparent source size ratio for p/pi(-) but not for Lambda/pi(-) or Lambda/p. These observations suggest important differences in the space-time emission histories for protons, pions, and neutral strange baryons produced in the same events.

Abstract

Rapidity distributions of protons from central 197Au+197Au collisions measured by the E895 Collaboration in the energy range from (2-8)A GeV at the Brookhaven AGS are presented. Longitudinal flow parameters derived using a thermal model including collective longitudinal expansion are extracted from these distributions. The results show an approximately linear increase in the longitudinal flow velocity, (L), as a function of the logarithm of beam energy.

Abstract

Directed flow measurements for Lambda hyperons are presented and compared to those for protons produced in the same Au+Au collisions (2A, 4A, and 6A GeV; b<5-6 fm). The measurements indicate that Lambda hyperons flow consistently in the same direction but with smaller magnitudes. A strong positive flow [for Lambdas] has been predicted in calculations which include the influence of the Lambda-nucleon potential. The experimental flow ratio Lambda/p is in qualitative agreement with expectations (approximately 2/3) from the quark counting rule at 2A GeV but is found to decrease with increasing beam energy.
