Biodiversity monitoring is key for understanding the delivery of ecosystem functions and services. Mediterranean forests and woodlands harbor many characteristic species of the Mediterranean vascular flora, and hence, they are a good surrogate for detecting changes in biodiversity linked to global change. In this work, we present a database resulting from the study of vascular plant diversity in multi-scale plots of 0.1 ha, measured around the first decade of this century and located in Mediterranean forest environments. Diversity profiles are calculated from Hill numbers (0, 1 and 2) for local (α) and regional (ϒ) diversity, as well as a multiplicative calculation of differential diversity (β). The main Mediterranean forests sampled had a medium coverage of 51% and stand dominant height of 10.6 m, and they were monospecific in two-thirds of cases. Local diversity reaches its highest values (around 78 species per 0.1 ha) in Holm oak dehesas, with values below 50 species for the most productive forest stands dominated by species of the genus Pinus. As regards the contribution to regional diversity, broadleaf formations contribute the most, with stone pine forests and dehesas in an intermediate position, and pine forests contributing the lowest in species richness terms. Estimation of tree volume typically focuses on excurrent forms, with less attention given to decurrent forms. Species with a decurrent form, particularly hardwoods, lack a dominant stem and have large diameter branches that can be included in the merchantable wood volume. We developed a preliminary two-equation system comprising a taper equation and a merchantable whole-tree volume (stem and branches) equation for Quercus rubra L. growing in Navarra (Northern Spain). The equation system includes the diameter at breast height and total tree height as independent variables, along with merchantable height—the height up to which the stem maintains a well-defined excurrent form—as an additional variable. After estimating the stem volume, the branch volume is estimated by subtracting the stem volume from the merchantable whole-tree volume. A second order continuous autoregressive error structure was used to correct for autocorrelation between residuals from the fitted taper equation. The equations explained 90% of the observed variability in diameter and 86% of the observed variability in merchantable whole-tree volume. Both equations have been implemented in the Cubica Navarra 3.0 software for use as a system of equations. Dietary factors influence the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The diet of Alaskan Eskimos differs from that of other populations. We surveyed Eskimo adults in Northwest Alaska to document their usual dietary intakes, differences based on gender and age, and sources of selected nutrients, and to generate appropriate dietary advice to reduce CVD. Interviewers surveyed 850 men and women 17-92 y old, using a quantitative food-frequency instrument. We observed many significant ([chi square] analysis P < 0.05) differences in nutrient intakes among 3 age-groups. Energy intake from carbohydrate was negatively related to participant age-group (P [less than or equal to] 0.01). Energy intake from all fats (P < 0.001) and polyunsaturated fat (P [less than or equal to] 0.01) was positively related to age-group among both men and women in contrast to other studies in which age differences were either not observed or decreased with age. Native foods were major sources of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, including 56% of (n-3) fatty acids primarily from seal oil and salmon. However, Native foods contributed significantly less to the diets of young adults than to those of elders, especially among women. Store-bought foods were the main sources of energy, carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, and fiber for all adults. Based on their nutrient density and potential to inhibit CVD, continued consumption of traditional foods is recommended. Variations in intake by age may portend changing eating patterns that will influence CVD as participants age. Understorey evaluation is essential in wildlife habitat management, biomass storage and wildfire suppression, among other areas. The lack of a standardised methodology in the field measurements, and in their subsequent analysis, forces researchers to look for procedures that effectively extract understorey data to make management decisions corresponding to actual stand conditions. In this sense, when analysing the understorey characteristics from LiDAR data, it is very usual to ask: "what value should we set the understorey height range to?" It is also usual to answer by setting a numeric value on the basis of previous research. Against that background, this research aims to identify the optimal height to canopy base (HCB) filter–LiDAR metric relationship for estimating understorey height (UH) and understorey cover (UC) using LiDAR data in the Pokupsko Basin lowland forest complex (Croatia). First, several HCB values per plot were obtained from field data (measured HCBi—HCBM-i, where i ϵ (minimum, maximum, mean, percentiles)), and then they were modelled based on LiDAR metrics (estimated HCBi—HCBE-i). These thresholds, measured and estimated HCBi per plot, were used as point cloud filters to estimate understorey parameters directly on the point cloud located under the canopy layer. In this way, it was possible to predict the UH with errors (RMSE) between 0.90 and 2.50 m and the UC with errors (RMSE) between 8.8 and 18.6 in cover percentage. Finally, the sensitivity analysis showed the HCB filter (the upper threshold to select the understorey LiDAR points) is the most important factor affecting the UH estimates, while this factor and the LiDAR metric are the most important factors affecting the UC estimates. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells provide new therapeutic options for patients with relapsed/refractory hematologic malignancies. However, neurotoxicity is a frequent, and potentially fatal, complication. The spectrum of manifestations ranges from delirium and language dysfunction to seizures, coma, and fatal cerebral edema. This novel syndrome has been designated immune effector cell–associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). In this review, we draw an arc from our current understanding of how systemic and potentially local cytokine release act on the CNS, toward possible preventive and therapeutic approaches. We systematically review reported correlations of secreted inflammatory mediators in the serum/plasma and cerebrospinal fluid with the risk of ICANS in patients receiving CAR T cell therapy. Possible pathophysiologic impacts on the CNS are covered in detail for the most promising candidate cytokines, including IL-1, IL-6, IL-15, and GM-CSF. To provide insight into possible final common pathways of CNS inflammation, we place ICANS into the context of other systemic inflammatory conditions that are associated with neurologic dysfunction, including sepsis-associated encephalopathy, cerebral malaria, thrombotic microangiopathy, CNS infections, and hepatic encephalopathy. We then review in detail what is known about systemic cytokine interaction with components of the neurovascular unit, including endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes, and how microglia and neurons respond to systemic inflammatory challenges. Current therapeutic approaches, including corticosteroids and blockade of IL-1 and IL-6 signaling, are reviewed in the context of what is known about the role of cytokines in ICANS. Throughout, we point out gaps in knowledge and possible new approaches for the investigation of the mechanism, prevention, and treatment of ICANS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Robot technology has become an integral part of the automotive industry in several tasks such as material handling, welding, painting, and part assembly. Therefore, the knowledge and skills to control the electric motors in these manipulators are essential for undergraduate electrical engineering students. Currently, the digital signal processor (DSP) is the core chip in industrial motor-control drives; however, the implementation of DSP control algorithms can be quite challenging for an experienced programmer, even more so for the novice. Considerable research has been done on this topic, although authors usually focus on DSP-based motor drives using popular control techniques such as field-oriented control (FOC). Although highly efficient, this approach is usually reserved for postgraduate education due to its complex structure and functionality. In this paper, the authors present a modular servodrive design on a low-cost, general-purpose microcontroller using the direct torque control (DTC) method, an alternative known for greater simplicity and torque response, compared with FOC. The system design was based on Micropython language allowing the software structure to be more manageable and the code to be more understandable.
