The determination of the current and past recharge sources, as well as the reconstruction of the timing of the recharge in geothermal reservoirs, is required in order to correctly assess the resource potential of these systems. Theistareykir is a newly developed geothermal field close to the well-known exploited fields of Krafla and Námafjall in NE Iceland. In this study, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios measured in deep geothermal fluids are presented and, together with the Cl and noble gas signatures, are used to place constraints on the fluid sources. The Cl/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios show a peculiar and unique composition among Icelandic geothermal fluids. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios range from 0.70355 to 0.70671, suggesting the presence of a significant seawater component—possibly marine aerosols added to rain or snowfall—as well as an additional source of Sr leached from local basalts. Moreover, a correlation between the atmospheric noble gas (ANGs) elemental ratios Ne/Ar, Kr/Ar and Xe/Ar, and the 87Sr/86Sr ratios is observed. The latter results from the mixing of meteoric water with Sr leached from local basalts, meteoric water containing unrelated Sr from seawater, and recharge water with ANGs derived from trapped air bubbles in snow. Background: We examined frailty as a predictor of recovery in older adults hospitalized with influenza and acute respiratory illness.Methods: A total of 5011 patients aged ≥65 years were admitted to Canadian Serious Outcomes Surveillance Network hospitals during the 2011/2012, 2012/2013, and 2013/2014 influenza seasons. Frailty was measured using a previously validated frailty index (FI). Poor recovery was defined as death by 30 days postdischarge or an increase of more than 0.06 (≥2 persistent new health deficits) on the FI. Multivariable logistic regression controlled for age, sex, season, influenza diagnosis, and influenza vaccination status.Results: Mean age was 79.4 (standard deviation = 8.4) years; 53.1% were women. At baseline, 15.0% (n = 750) were nonfrail, 39.3% (n = 1971) were prefrail, 39.8% (n = 1995) were frail, and 5.9% (n = 295) were most frail. Poor recovery was experienced by 21.4%, 52.0% of whom had died. Frailty was associated with lower odds of recovery in all 3 seasons: 2011/2012 (odds ratio [OR] = 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.59-0.84), 2012/2013 (OR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.66-0.79), and 2013/2014 (OR = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.69-0.82); results varied by season, influenza status, vaccination status, and age.Conclusions: Increasing frailty is associated with lower odds of recovery, and persistent worsening frailty is an important adverse outcome of acute illness. The rare earth element concentrations and radiogenic isotope (Sr‐Nd‐Hf) compositions measured in bulk sediment leachates, together with bulk and clay mineralogical data, from two piston cores recovered in the Canadian Beaufort (AMD0214‐02PC) and Chukchi‐Alaskan (HLY0501‐01JPC) margins were studied to investigate changes in the weathering regimes and deep water circulation during the Holocene. The coupled evolutions of the Nd and Hf isotopic compositions (expressed in epsilon units: ɛNd and ɛHf, respectively) are in good agreement with modern seawater and bulk sediment leachate data from Pacific water, Atlantic water, and the Mackenzie River. This agreement supports the idea that boundary exchange and brine formation likely play a significant role in the ɛNd and ɛHf values of the bottom waters in the western Arctic Ocean. The ɛNd and ɛHf records from the Canadian Beaufort and Chukchi‐Alaskan margins reveal changes toward more radiogenic values from the early to late Holocene. Based on the ɛNd and ɛHf records, we suggest that the unradiogenic values are not controlled by water mass provenance and mixing but rather by provenance and a change in the weathering regime in the Mackenzie and Yukon drainage basins during the early to mid‐Holocene. In contrast, the more radiogenic ɛNd and ɛHf values in the Chukchi‐Alaskan margin and the mineralogical records in the late Holocene have primarily been controlled by an increase in the contributions of seawater and detrital particles from the Bering Sea via the Bering Strait inflow, which is likely related to major changes in the Pacific Ocean‐atmospheric dynamics. The geochemistry of Re-Os and the recent use of Re as a non-traditional stable isotope both need accurate and precise quantification of 187Re/185Re ratios. This paper reports rhenium isotopic data obtained from the analysis of a standard solution and geological samples by MC-ICP-MS. We show that measured isotopic ratios are modified by matrix effects that cannot be accounted for by the standard solution bracketing technique. The bias resulting from measurements on a spiked (185Re-enriched) sample is shown to alter the apparent Re concentration by several percent. When spiking samples and calibrators with tungsten, simultaneous measurement of tungsten and rhenium isotopes compensates for the matrix-induced modification of mass bias. Rhenium and tungsten are shown to have different fractionation factors. This may be due to the fact that the two elements fractionate in a different but systematic way, or that the reference isotopic ratios used for elemental Re and W are incoherent with one another. The consistency of fractionation through time can be used to obtain an empirical relationship between W and Re measured ratios from a standard solution to obtain a sample's fractionation-corrected 187Re/185Re spiked ratio on samples containing pg g−1 levels of Re, even if some matrix capable of affecting mass bias remains in the final solution. Higher osmium concentrations and lower 187Os/188Os ratios in sediments from urban areas have been linked to anthropogenic osmium sources. Automobile catalytic converters that use platinum group metals (PGM) are a potential source for this Os pollution. We present the first direct Os concentrations and isotopic measurements of catalytic converters for major automobile brands to test the assumption that car catalysts release Os with a distinct signature in the environment The analysis of four new catalytic converters yields similar low l87Os/l88Os ratios (0.1-0.2), suggesting a similar source for the PGM. The Os concentrations measured are in the ppt range (6-228 ppt). From our results, the osmium contribution of the car catalysts to the environment through attrition (wearing and grinding down of the catalyst by friction) is predicted to be low, <0.2 pg Os/m²/year in highly urbanized environment We show that Os loss from catalysts as volatile OsO4 is important at car catalyst operating temperatures. Moreover, we estimate that car catalysts may be responsible for up to ∼120 pg Os/m² deposited per year in urban areas and that part of it may be exported to sedimentary sinks. Car catalytic converters are thus an important anthropogenic osmium source in densely populated areas. The NIST car catalyst standard (SRM- 2557, made from recycled used catalysts) yields higher concentrations (up to 721 ppt Os) and a more radiogenic isotopic composition (∼0.38), perhaps indicative of Os contamination during its preparation. Molar tooth structures are poorly understood early diagenetic, microspar-filled voids in clay-rich carbonate sediments. They are a common structure in sedimentary successions dating from 2600–720 Ma, but do not occur in rocks older or younger, with the exception of two isolated Ediacaran occurrences. Despite being locally volumetrically significant in carbonate rocks of this age, their formation and disappearance in the geological record remain enigmatic. Here we present iron isotope data, supported by carbon and oxygen isotopes, major and minor element concentrations, and total organic carbon and sulphur contents for 87 samples from units in ten different basins spanning ca. 1900–635 Ma. The iron isotope composition of molar tooth structures is almost always lighter (modal depletion of 2‰) than the carbonate or residue components in the host sediment. We interpret the isotopically light iron in molar tooth structures to have been produced by dissimilatory iron reduction utilising Fe-rich smectites and Fe-oxyhydroxides in the upper sediment column. The microbial conversion of smectite to illite results in a volume reduction of clay minerals (∼30%) while simultaneously increasing pore water alkalinity. When coupled with wave loading, this biogeochemical process is a viable mechanism to produce voids and subsequently precipitate carbonate minerals. The disappearance of molar tooth structures in the mid-Neoproterozoic is likely linked to a combination of a decrease in smectite abundance, a decline in the marine DIC reservoir, and an increase in the concentration of O 2 in shallow seawater. Bioindicators, by naturally cumulating the impacts of chemical contaminants over time, have demonstrated their added value in evaluating environmental quality. We studied Pb, Sr and Os isotope systematics from Cladonia rangiferina lichens collected along a transect between two smelting complexes located in Rouyn-Noranda and Sudbury (Canada) to identify sources of these metals in the Abitibi region and to delineate the extent of their respective emission plumes. Results show that metals present in the study area are explained by the contamination of the regional background by deposition from the atmospheric emissions of the different smelters over distances up to 250 km. A rough estimate of the respective metal contributions of each smelter to the lichen samples was calculated. At low metal concentrations, lichen samples indicate that dispersion plumes may differ for the Pb and Os contamination, perhaps to be linked to differential volatility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mining activities at Duparquet in Western Quebec (Canada) have significantly affected the local environment and left behind significant amounts of metals. Monitoring this contamination is essential to infer its past and present impacts on environmental quality and to evaluate the resulting human exposure. In that context, we measured long time series of Pb concentrations and their corresponding stable isotope ratios in long-lived white cedars (Thuja occidentalis L.) growing at Duparquet Lake in order to evaluate potential time variations of the Pb environmental contamination as well as to identify the responsible source(s). Results show that before 1950, Pb at Duparquet is mostly terrigenous. Lead concentrations rapidly increase afterwards. A simultaneous shift to lower 206Pb/207Pb ratios identifies the smelting of Abitibi ores as the source of contamination. An isotope mass balance model evaluates at roughly 7.5–20%, 5–40%, 5–9% and <3% the Pb contributions from local smelters at distances of 3.6, 3.9, 7 and 9 km, respectively. The dispersion of the Pb contamination plume is possibly driven by the distance from the Beattie smelter. We finally estimated a delay of at least 13 years between atmospheric emissions from the Beattie smelting activities and the time they are recorded by tree rings. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that white cedar tree rings series provide reliable archives of past and present Pb atmospheric contamination. Iron isotopes have been widely applied to investigate the redox evolution of Earth’s surface environments. However, it is still unclear whether iron cycling in the water column or during diagenesis represents the major control on the iron isotope composition of sediments and sedimentary rocks. Interpretation of isotopic data in terms of oceanic redox conditions is only possible if water column processes dominate the isotopic composition, whereas redox interpretations are less straightforward if diagenetic iron cycling controls the isotopic composition. In the latter scenario, iron isotope data is more directly related to microbial processes such as dissimilatory iron reduction. Here we present bulk rock iron isotope data from late Proterozoic marine shales from Svalbard, northwestern Canada, and Siberia, to better understand the controls on iron isotope fractionation in late Proterozoic marine environments. Bulk shales span a δ 56 Fe range from −0.45 ‰ to +1.04 ‰ . Although δ 56 Fe values show significant variation within individual stratigraphic units, their mean value is closer to that of bulk crust and hydrothermal iron in samples post-dating the ca. 717–660 Ma Sturtian glaciation compared to older samples. After correcting for the highly reactive iron content in our samples based on iron speciation data, more than 90% of the calculated δ 56 Fe compositions of highly reactive iron falls in the range from ca. −0.8 ‰ to +3 ‰ . An isotope mass-balance model indicates that diagenetic iron cycling can only change the isotopic composition of highly reactive iron by < 1 ‰ , suggesting that water column processes, namely the degree of oxidation of the ferrous seawater iron reservoir, control the isotopic composition of highly reactive iron. Considering a long-term decrease in the isotopic composition of the iron source to the dissolved seawater Fe(II) reservoir to be unlikely, we offer two possible explanations for the Neoproterozoic δ 56 Fe trend. First, a decreasing supply of Fe(II) to the ferrous seawater iron reservoir could have caused the reservoir to decrease in size, allowing a higher degree of partial oxidation, irrespective of increasing environmental oxygen levels. Alternatively, increasing oxygen levels would have led to a higher proportion of Fe(II) being oxidized, without decreasing the initial size of the ferrous seawater iron pool. We consider the latter explanation as the most likely. According to this hypothesis, the δ 56 Fe record reflects the redox evolution of Earth’s surface environments. δ 56 Fe values in pre-Sturtian samples significantly heavier than bulk crust and hydrothermal iron imply partial oxidation of a ferrous seawater iron reservoir. In contrast, mean δ 56 Fe values closer to that of hydrothermal iron in post-Sturtian shales reflects oxidation of a larger proportion of the ferrous seawater iron reservoir, and by inference, higher environmental oxygen levels. Nevertheless, significant iron isotopic variation in post-Sturtian shales suggest redox heterogeneity and possibly a dominantly anoxic deep ocean, consistent with results from recent studies using iron speciation and redox sensitive trace metals. However, the interpretation of generally increasing environmental oxygen levels after the Sturtian glaciation highlights the need to better understand the sensitivity of different redox proxies to incremental changes in oxygen levels to enable us to reconcile results from different paleoredox proxies. • Modern groundwater from Southern Quebec contain up to 18% of mantle helium. • This helium could be a fossil record of the Cretaceous Monteregian Hills (MH). • Mantle helium is diluted with time by radiogenic 4He before released in water. • Monte Carlo simulations of a "magma aging" model was done to estimate initial 3He/4He. • Initial 3He/4He of 21–33 × the atmospheric ratio suggests that MH resulted from a hotspot source. The Monteregian Hills are an alignment of magmatic intrusions of Cretaceous age located in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, Quebec, Canada. Their origin is controversial and numerous studies have failed to decipher between a hotspot trail or sub-continental magmatism related to the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean. Here, we show that 17.7 ± 9.6 % of the helium of the modern to Holocene-aged groundwater from the regional aquifer is of mantle origin, with a 3He/4He (R) of up to 1.42 times the atmospheric ratio (Ra). It suggests that a fossil Monteregian Hills magmatic signal, diluted by local radiogenic helium and preserved in the Monteregian Hills intrusions, is leached locally by flowing modern or sub-modern groundwater. Helium isotopic measurements by pyrolysis in Monteregian Hills bulk rocks and clinopyroxene separates show R/Ra values of up to 4.96, suggesting that fossil mantle helium has been partially preserved in these rocks and their mineral phases. Monte Carlo simulations of a magma aging model shows that the initial 3He/4He ratio in these Cretaceous intrusions could have been between 21 ± 10 Ra and 33 ± 28 Ra (2 σ), favoring the hypothesis that the Monteregian Hills are the product of the passage of the North American plate over the New England hotspot. Despite its major role as a global climate regulator, little is known about the recent evolution of the North Atlantic Ocean, especially prior to the fifties, principally because of the lack of long-term instrumental data. Moreover, the North Atlantic Ocean is undergoing rapid changes at the physical scale leading to modifications at the biological scale increasing interest to monitor the environment. The phytoplankton is the base of the ocean life and its perturbation can lead to further changes in the food chain. Recording its dynamics implies to observe both its spatial and temporal variations. This study brings forward the use of the Ba/Ca ratio from shells of the long-living bivalve Arctica islandica collected in the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean near Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (SPM) as a recorder of the past and present phytoplankton dynamics. A high inter and intra-reproducibility and synchrony between Ba/Ca shell profiles were demonstrated allowing the reconstruction of a 124 years annually-resolved Ba/Ca shell master chronology (from 1893 to 2016). This master chronology was positively correlated to the surface chlorophyll a measured by satellite sensor at regional (around SPM) and global scales (Northwestern Atlantic). In a comparison of 4 second-generation nucleic acid amplification tests performed with self-collected vaginal swab (SCVS) and first-void urine (FVU) specimens from 575 women, SCVS specimens indicated more infections than did FVU specimens in all assays. The prevalence rates were 9% (53/575 patients) for Chlamydia trachomatis and 2% (11/575 patients) for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The clinical sensitivities for testing SCVS specimens for C. trachomatis were 98.1% on a Tigris system and 96.2% on a Panther system for the Aptima Combo 2 assay (Hologic Gen-Probe), 98.0% for the RealTime CT/NG assay on an m2000 instrument (Abbott), 90.6% for the ProbeTec CT/GC Q(x) assay on the Viper system (Becton Dickinson), and 84.6% for the cobas CT/NG assay on the cobas 4800 platform (Roche). Clinical sensitivities for C. trachomatis in FVU specimens were 88.7% (Tigris) and 88.0% (Panther) for the Aptima Combo 2 assay, 76.9% for the RealTime CT/NG assay, 75.5% for the ProbeTec CT/GC Q(x) assay, and 81.1% for the cobas CT/NG assay. Clinical sensitivities of the assays for N. gonorrhoeae, with limited positive results, ranged from 63.6% to 100%. Specificities for both infections ranged from 98.4 to 100%.
