The prevalence of endoparasites associated with chaetognath abundance in the coastal waters of the Mexican Central Pacific was studied fortnightly from November 2010 to December 2011. A total of 35 (0.21%) out of 16,407 chaetognaths were found to be parasitized. Five out of twelve chaetognath species (Flaccisagitta enflata, F. hexaptera, Parasagitta euneritica, Serratosagitta pacifica, Zonosagitta bedoti) were found to be parasitized by nine endoparasitic taxa: Protists (two morphotypes), digenean metacercariae [Didymozoidae, Hemiuridae, Parahemiurus sp., Lepocreadiidae, Prosorhynchus sp. (Bucephalidae)], and cestodes (metacestodes) [Tetraphyllidea (two morphotypes)]. Parasagitta. euneritica and Z. bedoti were the most abundant chaetognath species, and Protist sp. 2 and Tetraphyllidea sp. 1 were the most abundant parasites. The highest prevalence for most of the endoparasite species occurred in June, and the values varied according to three hydroclimatic periods: stratified (S), semi-mixed (SM), and mixed (M). Eight non-infected chaetognath species, two parasitized chaetognaths (F. enflata and S. pacifica), and two parasites (Protist sp. 1 and Tetraphyllidea sp. 2) were associated with warm temperatures (S and SM periods); in contrast, P. euneritica, Z. bedoti, parasitized F. hexaptera, and the parasite Tetraphyllidea sp. 1 showed a strong local preference for cooler temperatures, high productivity, and high biomass conditions (M periods). We discovered the occurrence of the digenean Prosorhynchus sp. (Bucephalidae) parasitizing the chaetognath P. euneritica, and this is the first report of Prosorhynchus parasitizing chaetognaths worldwide. We also confirmed the presence of Lepocrediidae (metacercariae larval stage) infecting F. hexaptera, a parasite that had only been recorded infecting other chaetognaths of the Atlantic Ocean. The parasite diversity affecting the chaetognath populations of the Central Mexican Pacific coast likely differs between the offshore, outer slope areas, and the surveyed coastal system.

Background: As the migratory flow to the USA has intensified in recent months, health problems associated have been identified. The aim of this work was the identification of malaria cases imported into Mexican territory. Methods: Operational definitions of suspected and confirmed cases were used for investigation of malaria cases. Detection of parasitic entities by thick blood smear and molecular biology served as a confirmatory test. With the characteristics of the cases, a heat map was made to determine common clinical pictures. Finally, epidemiological analysis of cases was performed for the construction of timelines of imported malaria and the tracing of migratory routes. Results: Twelve migrants from four countries were treated for presenting clinical symptoms with suspected dengue or malaria. Malaria was confirmed and two Plasmodium species were identified. From the epidemiological dates of arrival in Mexico, onset of symptoms and migratory routes, we speculate that ten cases acquired P. vivax during their crossing through Honduras, El Salvador or Guatemala. For the Guinea cases, we conclude that there was African importation of P. falciparum. Conclusion: The epidemiological panorama of malaria cases imported into Mexico show the need to join efforts to ensure universal access to health services, with the objective of timely detection of imported cases.

Antecedentes: El parche transdérmico anticonceptivo es eficaz con ventajas frente a otros métodos hormonales. El porcentaje de usuarias en México de este método es 2.8 %. Objetivo: Describir los factores que determinan la utilización del parche. Material y métodos: Revisión de la literatura sobre anticoncepción en México. Resultados: El sistema de salud ofrece anticoncepción gratuita. Es necesario evitar obstáculos burocráticos, asegurar la provisión de suministros y mejorar la capacitación de los profesionales de salud. En México, el parche anticonceptivo es el método anticonceptivo menos conocido y accesible para la población femenina; solo 20.9 % de mujeres saben cómo funciona correctamente. El parche, debido a su conveniencia, es una opción efectiva y segura. La información y consejería adecuada en el uso del parche debe incrementar el conocimiento funcional de las usuarias y mejorar el apego terapéutico. Conclusión: El parche transdérmico es una alternativa anticonceptiva adecuada, de tal forma que incrementar el conocimiento funcional puede contribuir a reducir la necesidad insatisfecha.

IntroductionThis study aims to estimate the validity and reliability of sound transmission tests using a tuning fork and stethoscope compared with the usual clinical procedures for the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in newborns from the state of Guanajuato, Mexico.MethodologyThis is a cross-sectional study of newborns at the Guanajuato General Hospital of the Institute of Public Health from Guanajuato. The population under study comprised newborns born from April to May 2023. All parents of newborns were invited to participate. The Ortolani, Barlow, Peter–Baden, and sound transmission tests were performed with a tuning fork and stethoscope three times by two observers. Ultrasonography using the Graf technique was also applied to both hips. We evaluated the validity and repeatability of clinical procedures and sound transmission tests against ultrasonography as the gold standard. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values for validity and Cohen's kappa for repeatability.ResultsThe sample consisted of 100 newborns (56% male and 44% female); 65% born by vaginal delivery. Sound transmission test results for sensitivity, specificity, the positive predictive value, and the negative predictive value were 87.88%, 95.81%, 80%, and 97.53%, respectively. The intra-observer kappa was 0.89 (95% CI = 0.80–0.97) and the inter-observer kappa was 0.85 (95% CI = 0.73–0.97). The validity and repeatability of the Ortolani, Barlow, and Peter–Baden tests were low compared with the sound transmission test.ConclusionThe sound transmission test using a tuning fork and stethoscope is helpful for the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of smartphone viewing distance and angle on reaction times. Design: A prospective, self-controlled, single-center study. Methods: Participants engaged in a driving simulation facing a large screen with a simulated brake pedal. They were tasked to stop the simulation once recognizing the deceleration of upcoming traffic. Tests were conducted without distraction and with a standardized distraction simulating texting while driving (TWD). Smartphone positions varied at distances of 30 cm and 60 cm, and at angles parallel to and 30° below the road plane. Reaction times were measured from the onset of simulated closure to detection. Stopping distances were extrapolated using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Results: Ninety-four participants were included with a mean age of 24 ± 2.7 years. Abstract During the last decade, Latin America has witnessed an unprecedented massive current of migration flows. This migration crisis has been well documented by the local and international press. This article focuses on the reporting of the internal migration crisis in Latin America, particularly how the media has negatively framed migrants. The main objective focuses on understanding how Latin American newspapers have covered the internal migration flows? And what kind of frames promote a negative image towards migrants? As final outcomes will show, it is possible to observe how local newspapers have promoted an adverse vision towards migrants based on traditional stereotypes and prejudices.

Abstract There are limited data on first seizure (FS) among adults in low and middle‐income countries. We describe findings from a prospective cohort study involving 180 adults presenting with seizures in emergency departments in five Latin American countries. Overall, 102 participants (56.7%) had acute symptomatic seizures (ASyS) while 78 (43.3%) had unprovoked seizures (UPS). Among patients with ASyS, 55 (53.9%) had structural causes, with stroke (n = 24, 23.5%), tumor (n = 10, 9.8%), and trauma (n = 3, 3%) being the most frequent. Nineteen patients (18.6%) had infectious causes, including four (4%) with meningoencephalitis, three (3%) neurocysticercosis, and two (2%) bacterial meningoencephalitis. Twenty patients (19.6%) had metabolic/toxic evidence, including four (4%) with uremic encephalopathy, two (2%) hyponatremia, and three (3%) acute alcohol intoxication. Immune dysfunction was present in seven (7%) patients and neurodegenerative in two (2%). Among participants with UPS, 45 (57.7%) had unknown etiology, 24 (30.7%) had evidence of structural disorders (remote symptomatic), four (5%) were related to infectious etiology (>7 days before the seizure), and five (6.4%) had genetic causes. During the 3‐ and 6‐month follow‐up, 29.8% and 14% of patients with UPS, respectively, experienced seizure recurrence, while 23.9% and 24.5% of patients with ASyS had seizure recurrence. Longer follow‐up is necessary to assess seizure recurrence for patients with ASyS after the acute cause is resolved and to determine the 10‐year risk of recurrence, which is part of the definition of epilepsy. Plain Language Summary We monitored 180 adults who presented with their first seizure in emergency departments across five Latin American countries. Among these patients, 57% had acute symptomatic seizures, with structural causes such as stroke (23%), infection (17%), or tumor (10%) being more prevalent. Among the 43% with unprovoked seizures, 58% showed no identifiable acute cause, while 6.4% were due to genetics. Within 3 months after their initial seizure, 26.6% of individuals experienced a second seizure, with 11.9% continuing to have seizures in Months 3–6. Between Months 3 and 6, an additional 20% of patients encountered a second seizure. Research is needed to better understand the cause and prognosis of these patients to improve outcomes.

Second-growth forests represent the largest area of forest in southern Mexico and can provide relevant information on how their structural attributes in are linked to anthropogenic factors and for their forest management. However, a knowledge gap remains at national level with little scientific literature available. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the structure and tree richness of second-growth forests in the south of Quintana Roo State, México. With stratified sampling through participatory mapping of local collaborators, secondary tropical forests of 7, 15, 27, 37, and ≥ 48 to 80 years (y) old-growth were identified. We categorized forests into three successional stage classes: 5-20 y (Class I; forests of 7 and 15 y); 25-40 y (Class II; forests of 27 and 37 y), and old-growth forest (Class III; forests 48-80 y). In each forest (7, 15, 27, 37, 48, and 80 y of time since abandonment [tSA]) three plots were randomly chosen and established within the forest. Each age class was composed of two forests and six sample plots. In total there were 18 plots of 500 m2 each. Subsequently, we: i) calculated the land use intensity (LUI) to which the sites were subjected, ii) described the following structural attributes: floristic similarity, true diversity (effective number of species), stem density, and basal area (AB), and iii) evaluated if tSA and LUI influence the aforementioned structural attributes. Tree diversity was characterized with Hill numbers associated with observed species richness (0D), richness of equally abundant species (1D), and dominant species (2D). Forest structure was analyzed by density (number of trees ha−1) and distribution of stems by diameter class ha−1 and basal area (BA, m2 ha−1). The second-growth forest was derived from the milpa agricultural system under moderate land use intensity (LUI index = 0.02 - 0.1). Floristic structure was at least similar between Class I and Class III. Forest age and LUI do not affect tree composition of the forests (p ≥ 0.1667). However, these two factors affected stem density and BA. Only the species richness (0D) of second-growth forest and old-growth forest was influenced by tSA (p = 0.0002). In second-growth forests, Classes I and II, 78 species (0D) were recorded, 8 and 8 exclusive species, 28 and 36 equally abundant species (1D), and 15 to 24 dominant species (2D). In the old-growth forest, Class III, 70 species were recorded, and 38 and 26 equally abundant (1D) and dominant species (2D), as well as 5 exclusive species. The density of stems decreased with increasing forest age and increasing BA. Second-growth forest and old-growth forest all showed a high density of small diameter stems. These results indicate that second-growth forests are important tree species reservoirs (including those for timber purposes), comparable to old-growth or mature forests, and therefore they are relevant not only as biodiversity conservation areas or carbon sinks, but also for planned sustainable forest management.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent fatal neoplasias worldwide. Despite efforts to improve the early diagnosis of CRC, the mortality rate of patients is still nearly 50%. The primary treatment strategy for CRC is surgery, which may be accompanied by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The conventional and first-line chemotherapeutic agent utilized is 5-fluorouracil (5FU). However, it has low efficiency. Combination treatment with leucovorin and oxaliplatin or irinotecan improves the effectiveness of 5FU therapy. Unfortunately, most patients develop drug resistance, leading to disease progression. Here, we evaluated the effect of a potential alternative adjuvant treatment for 5FU, helminth-derived Taenia crassiceps (TcES) molecules, on treating advanced colitis-associated colon cancer. The use of TcES enhanced the effects of 5FU on established colonic tumors by downregulating the expression of the immunoregulatory cytokines, Il-10 and Tgf-β, and proinflammatory cytokines, Tnf-α and Il-17a, and reducing the levels of molecular markers associated with malignancy, cyclin D1, and Ki67, both involved in apoptosis inhibition and the signaling pathway of β-catenin. TcES+5FU therapy promoted NK cell recruitment and the release of Granzyme B1 at the tumor site, consequently inducing tumor cell death. Additionally, it restored P53 activity which relates to decreased Mdm2 expression. In vitro assays with human colon cancer cell lines showed that therapy with TcES+5FU significantly reduced cell proliferation and migration by modulating the P53 and P21 signaling pathways. Our findings demonstrate, for the first time in vivo, that helminth-derived excreted/secreted products may potentiate the effect of 5FU on established colon tumors.

The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder associated with stress that may occur in the academic context, given that students are exposed to high demands during their education process which can lead to the development of diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation and predictive value between the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with stress in dentistry students at a public university in Mexico, taking into account the gender variable. The design is cross-sectional with 740 dental students. Nowack’s Stress Profile was used as well as the ROMA III criteria to identify IBS. Multiple lineal regression models were built, in which the dependent variable was IBS and the independent ones were the stress profile variables and group data. Such models were built independently for each sex and their results were compared. The IBS model in males was significant in the following variables: IBS = – 1.454 (problem concentration) + .315 (negative valuation) – .390 (social support network) + .513 (type A behavior) – .464 (rest/sleep), with a strength of R2 = .685; F = 75.72; p < .01 which explains 68% of the variance; and for females it was: ISB = – .041 (positive valuation) – .082 (eating habits/nutri-tion) with a strength of R2 = .643; F = 42.69; p < .01, which explains 64% of the variance. The comparative analysis determined that male dental students are at a greater risk of developing IBS due to stress. Therefore, programs aimed at a timely identification of the stress risk variables would be recommended to prevent consequences to the health, inadequate academic performance and wellbeing of dental students in Mexico.

Introduction: Bilothorax is a rare condition defined by the presence of bile in the pleural space. Currently, there are around 70 cases described in the literature. It remains relatively unknown and, therefore, little suspected. This entity is usually the result of an iatrogenic injury, often secondary to surgery or trauma to the biliary tract, leading to the formation of a pleurobiliary fistula. Clinical case: We present the case of a patient with probable metastatic lung cancer to the pleura and liver who, due to extensive liver disease, developed bilothorax as a complication. Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of having a high degree of suspicion for bilothorax in patients presenting with pleural effusion caused by lung cancer with extensive metastatic liver disease. Although it is a rare diagnosis, bilothorax can cause significant respiratory complications and morbidity.

Six Holstein steers (153 kg ± 11) with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used in a 6 × 6 Latin square design experiment to compare flake density (FD, kg/L), flake thickness (FT, mm), amyloglucosidase reactivity (AGR, % DM) and faecal starch (FS, % DM) as predictors of ruminal (RSD, %) and total tract (TSD, %) starch digestion. Dietary treatments consisted of a finishing diet containing 77% corn. The six corn processing treatments consisted of dry-rolled corn (DRC) with a density of 0.54 kg/L, and steam-flaked corn (SFC) processed to obtain densities of 0.46, 0.41, 0.36, 0.31 and 0.26 kg/L. Forest cover is deteriorating rapidly due to anthropogenic causes, making its restoration urgent. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) could offer a viable solution to ensure successful reforestation efforts. This study aimed to select bacterial strains with mechanisms that promote plant growth and enhance seedling development. The bacterial strains used in this study were isolated from the rhizosphere and endophyte regions of Pinus montezumae Lamb. and Pinus patula Schl. et Cham., two Mexican conifer species commonly used for reforestation purposes. Sixteen bacterial strains were selected for their ability to produce auxins, chitinase, and siderophores, perform nitrogen fixation, and solubilize inorganic phosphates; they also harbored genes encoding antimicrobial production and ACC deaminase. The adhesion to seeds, germination rate, and seedling response of P. montezumae and P. patula were performed following inoculation with 10 bacterial strains exhibiting high plant growth-promoting potential. Some strains demonstrated the capacity to enhance seedling growth. The selected strains were taxonomically characterized and belonged to the genus Serratia, Buttiauxella, and Bacillus. These strains exhibited at least two mechanisms of action, including the production of indole-3-acetic acid, biological nitrogen fixation, and phosphate solubilization, and could serve as potential alternatives for the reforestation of affected areas.

Robot manipulators play a critical role in several industrial applications by providing high precision and accuracy. To perform these tasks, manipulator robots require the effective computation of inverse kinematics. Conventional methods to solve IK often encounter significant challenges, such as singularities, non-linear equations, and poor generalization across different robotic configurations. In this work, we propose a novel approach to solve the inverse kinematics (IK) problem in robotic manipulators using a metaheuristic algorithm enhanced with a Jacobian step. Our method overcomes those limitations by selectively applying the Jacobian step to the differential evolution (DE) algorithm. The effectiveness and versatility of the proposed approach are demonstrated through simulations and real-world experimentation on a 5 DOF KUKA robotic arm.

The aim of this study was to evaluate growth performance, dietary energy utilization, and carcass characteristics (carcass weight, dressing percentage, and visceral organ mass) of feedlot lambs fed different levels of AZOMITE (AZO), a source of volcanic clay composed of hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate, the same as that included in a finishing diet. For this reason, 36 Pelibuey × Katahdin crossbred intact male lambs (18.81 ± 3.04 kg initial weight) were used in a feeding trial lasting 81 d. Lambs were grouped by initial weight and assigned within six weight groupings to 18 pens in a randomized complete block design. Diets, offered ad libitum, were corn-based finishing diets with an 88:12 concentrate-to-forage ratio supplemented as follows: 1) no AZO inclusion (CTRL), 2) AZO inclusion at a 0.75% level (0.75AZO) in diet dry matter, 3) AZO inclusion at a 1.50% level (1.5AZO) in diet dry matter. Cracked corn was replaced by AZO. After the feeding trial was finished, lambs were slaughtered and carcass weight was registered and dressing percentage was calculated. The data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design, with the pen as the experimental unit. Water consumption and dry matter intake were not affected (p ≥ 0.11) by supplemental AZO. The incorporation of AZO into the diet increased gain efficiency and observed dietary net energy (NE), being maximal with 0.75% AZO inclusion (quadratic effect, p = 0.02). The observed-to-expected dietary NE in the control group was as anticipated (1.00) according to the estimated energy based on the ingredient composition in diet, while in the 0.75AZO group, the observed dietary energy was 6% above expected, indicating a greater efficiency in energy utilization destined to growth (quadratic effect, p = 0.006). Lambs that were fed the AZO treatment showed an improvement (linear effect, p = 0.04) in hot carcass weight (HCW), and tended (linear effect, p = 0.06) to improve dressing percentage (DP) as AZO was increased in the diet. Visceral organ mass was not affected by the treatments. It is concluded that AZOMITE clay can be included up to 1.5% in finishing diets for lambs without negative effects on the intake of water and feed. Lambs that received diets supplemented with 0.75% AZO showed greater improvements in feed efficiency and dietary energy utilization, but an inclusion of 1.50% resulted in greater improvements to HCW and DP. This is the first report regarding the effects of AZO supplementation in the dietary energy utilization of fattening hairy lambs. Further research about the effects of AZO supplementation on ruminal and total tract digestion, carcass and meat quality, and the health of lambs is needed in order to more deeply understand the effects of AZO on its productivity performance.

A barium-rich Celestine (Sr,Ba)SO4 concentrate from the primary Mexican ore production was used as a thickening agent to produce closed-cell Zn-22Al-2Cu alloy foams, while calcium carbonate was used as a foaming agent. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the foams were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and compression tests, respectively. The Zn-22Al-2Cu alloy foams showed a typical lamellar eutectic microstructure, constituted by a zinc-rich phase (η) and a (α) solid solution that was richer in aluminum, while a copper-rich (ε) phase was formed in the interdendritic regions. The SEM micrographs show the presence of small particles and aggregates that are randomly scattered in the cell walls and correspond to unreacted calcite and Celestine–Barian particles, especially for the higher barite addition. The compressive curves showed smooth behavior, wherein the particles at the cell walls did not affect the foam’s compressive behavior. The trial containing 1.5 wt. % of BaSO4 and 1.0 wt. % of CaCO3 showed a higher energy absorption capacity of 5.64 MJ m−3 because of its highest relative density and lowest porosity values. The Celestine–Barian concentrate could be used as a foaming agent for high melt-point metals or alloys based on the TGA results.

Este estudio aborda el problema de la injusticia cognitiva que persiste en México, a pesar de los mecanismos propuestos para garantizar los derechos de los pueblos indígenas. Dado que la educación superior es fundamental para la generación y transmisión del conocimiento, se realizó una investigación teórico-narrativa para examinar cómo se manifiesta esta problemática desde el discurso de personas de pueblos originarios inmersas en el sistema educativo. El marco teórico propone soluciones basadas en conceptos como inclusión y autonomía universitaria. Los resultados indican que los participantes entienden el problema desde perspectivas más pertinentes a su contexto, remitiendo a errores históricos de la época colonial, y ofrecen medidas para que la escuela refleje el sistema social. Se encuentra que una de las manifestaciones de la injusticia cognitiva está en los diseños curriculares oficiales, dada la estrecha relación entre cultura, lengua y conocimientos. Junto a los participantes, se cuestiona la limitada participación de los pueblos originarios en la elaboración de planes y programas académicos.

Objective. To highlight the objectives, achievements, challenges, and next steps for the World Health Organization’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) framework, a project designed to improve psychosocial care (PSC) in pediatric cancer centers across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Methods. The project was launched in Peru, the first GICC focal country, in November 2020. The diagnosis phase included a survey and a semistructured interview with health professionals to assess PSC practices in institutions, and a needs assessment survey for caregivers. In the second phase, a strategic plan was developed to address the identified needs, including the adaptation of PSC standards, the establishment of multicenter working groups, the expansion of the proposal, and the development of materials. Results. The study found that PSC was not being adequately provided in accordance with international standards. Six adapted standards were proposed and validated, and more than 50 regional health professionals participated in online activities to support the project. The implementation process is currently ongoing, with the establishment of five multidisciplinary working groups, one regional committee, and the production of 16 technical outputs. Conclusion. This project represents a substantial step forward to improve PSC for pediatric patients with cancer and their families in LAC countries. The establishment of working groups and evidence-based interventions strengthen the proposal and its implementation. Development of health policies that include PSC according to standards is needed to achieve sustainable results in the quality of life of children with cancer and their families.

Enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses for reference intervals (RIs) establish ranges of physiological normality, which are useful for diagnosing diseases and physiological alterations. Within the same species, RIs vary according to age, gender, productive and physiological states, and environmental factors including health management and nutrition. RIs have been extensively studied in dairy calves during a critical stage of life (from birth up to first 90 days of age). A critical stage for feedlot calves is their arrival at the feedlot, but no reports determine RIs for different enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses during their initial period at the feedlot. Consequently, a total of 461 high-risk crossbreed beef calves, received on three different dates, were examined upon arrival at the feedlot. Of these, 320 calves (148.3 ± 1.3 kg body weight) whose “clinical health” was evaluated were included in the study. Blood samples were taken upon arrival and on days 14, 28, 42, and 56 to determine the following parameters: enzymic activity, metabolites, electrolytes, white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. Enzymic activity, metabolites, and complete blood count were determined by automated analyzers. The freeware Reference Value Advisor Software was used to calculate the non-parametric values of RIs. This study is the first to establish RIs for different enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses in high-risk newly received calves during their initial period at the feedlot. This information will be useful for veterinary clinical practice and research related to the health and welfare of high-risk newly received calves during their initial period at the feedlot.
