Thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used for the first time to deposit iron‐nickel oxides onto carbon nanotubes in a ternary process to produce a wide range of mixed oxide thin films. When using ferrocene (FeCp2) and nickelocene (NiCp2) with ozone (O3) as metals and oxygen sources, respectively, a competition between the metal precursors and the growth modes is observed. Indeed, while ferrocene promotes a 2D‐growth, nickelocene prefers a 3D‐growth. Although both precursors are homoleptic metallocenes, they behave differently in the ALD of their respective metal oxide, leading to unexpected atomic ratios and films morphologies of the iron‐nickel oxides. The 2Fe:1Ni sample displays the best performances in the electrochemical water oxidation (oxygen evolution reaction) exhibiting an overpotential of 267 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−1, a Tafel slope of 36.8 mV dec−1, as well as a good stability after 15 h of continuous operation. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus ochraceous and various Penicillium species, which are known for contaminating agricultural products and posing significant health risks, which include immunotoxicity. This study aims to evaluate the potential of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) loaded with a carotenoid-enriched extract from pumpkin peel (Cucurbita maxima L.) in mitigating the toxic effects of OTA. To address the poor bioavailability and instability of carotenoids, nanoencapsulation techniques were employed to enhance their delivery and efficacy. NLCs were formulated using hydrogenated sunflower oil, pumpkin oil, and soy lecithin using hot high-pressure homogenization. The in vitro study involved co-digesting OTA-contaminated bread with an NLC formulation and assessing the impact of the encapsulated carotenoid on OTA bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and cellular toxicity using Caco-2 and Jurkat T cells. Even though no significant influence was observed on the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of OTA, carotenoid-loaded NLCs exhibited cytoprotective effects by improving cell viability and mitigating OTA-induced toxicity in both Caco-2 and Jurkat T cells. Particularly, the flow cytometry analysis highlighted the ability of carotenoids to mitigate OTA-induced cellular damage by decreasing ROS production and limiting mitochondrial mass changes. The study suggests that the encapsulation of carotenoids in NLCs represents a promising strategy to enhance their protective effects against OTA toxicity, potentially offering a novel approach to food safety and public health protection. Rational design of efficient pH‐universal hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts to enable large‐scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is of great significance, yet a challenging task. Herein, Ru atoms in the Ru2P structure were replaced with M = Co, Ni, or Mo to produce M2−xRuxP nanocrystals. The metals show strong site preference, with Co and Ni occupying the tetrahedral sites and Ru the square pyramidal sites of the CoRuP and NiRuP Ru2P‐type structures. The presence of Co or Ni in the tetrahedral sites leads to charge redistribution for Ru and, according to density functional theory calculations, a significant increase in the Ru d‐band centers. As a result, the intrinsic activity of CoRuP and NiRuP increases considerably compared to Ru2P in both acidic and alkaline media. The effect is not observed for MoRuP, in which Mo prefers to occupy the pyramidal sites. In particular, CoRuP shows state‐of‐the‐art activity, outperforming Ru2P with Pt‐like activity in 0.5 M H2SO4 (η10 = 12.3 mV; η100 = 52 mV; turnover frequency (TOF) = 4.7 s−1). It remains extraordinarily active in alkaline conditions (η10 = 12.9 mV; η100 = 43.5 mV) with a TOF of 4.5 s−1, which is 4x higher than that of Ru2P and 10x that of Pt/C. Further increase in the Co content does not lead to drastic loss of activity, especially in alkaline medium, where, for example, the TOF of Co1.9Ru0.1P remains comparable to that of Ru2P and higher than that of Pt/C, highlighting the viability of the adopted approach to prepare cost‐efficient catalysts. Plants, including pumpkins (Cucurbita spp.), are an interesting source of nutrients and bioactives with various health benefits. In this research, carotenoid extracts obtained from the pulp of eight pumpkin varieties, belonging to the C. moschata and C. maxima species, were tested for cytotoxicity on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. The results showed that pumpkin bioactives exert a cytotoxic action against the tested cells, in particular Butternut extract at a 100 μM (53.69 μg/mL) concentration after 24 h of treatment and Mantovana extract at 50 μM (26.84 μg/mL) after 48 h. Moreover, the carotenoid extracts also showed interesting in vitro antioxidant activity, evaluated by ABTS and ORAC assays. To fully characterize the qualitative and quantitative profile of carotenoids in the tested extracts, a high-performance chromatographic technique was performed, revealing that pumpkin pulp carotenoids were mainly represented by β-carotene, mono- and di-esterified hydroxy- and epoxy-carotenoids. Moreover, the carotenoid dataset was also useful for discriminating samples from two different species. In conclusion, the results of the present study highlight the potential anti-cancer activity of pumpkin carotenoid extracts and the possibility of using them as chemotherapeutic adjuvants. Lithium‐ion batteries, essential for electronics and electric vehicles, predominantly use cathodes made from critical materials like cobalt. Sulfur‐based cathodes, offering a high theoretical capacity of 1675 mAh g−1 and environmental advantages due to sulfur's abundance and lower toxicity, present a more sustainable alternative. However, state‐of‐the‐art sulfur‐based electrodes do not reach the theoretical capacities, mainly because conventional electrode production relies on mixing of components into weakly coordinated slurries. Consequently, sulfur's mobility leads to battery degradation—an effect known as the "sulfur‐shuttle". This study introduces a solution by developing a microporous, covalently‐bonded, imine‐based polymer network grown in situ around sulfur particles on the current collector. The polymer network (i) enables selective transport of electrolyte and Li‐ions through pores of defined size, and (ii) acts as a robust host to retain the active component of the electrode (sulfur species). The resulting cathode has superior rate performance from 0.1 C (1360 mAh g−1) to 3 C (807 mAh g−1). Demonstrating a high‐performance, sustainable sulfur cathode produced via a simple one‐pot process, our research underlines the potential of microporous polymers in addressing sulfur diffusion issues, paving the way for sulfur electrodes as viable alternatives to traditional metal‐based cathodes. Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are organic‐inorganic hybrid materials with exceptionally customizable composition and properties. MOFs intrinsically possess open metal sites, tunable pore size/shape and an ultra‐large specific surface area, and have obtained significant attention over the past 30 years. Furthermore, through the integration of functional moieties such as, molecules, functional groups, noble metal clusters and nanocrystals or nanoparticles into MOFs, the resulting composites have greatly enriched the physical and chemical properties of pure MOFs, enabling their application in a wider range of fields. Triethylamine (TEA) as an organic base has consistently played a fundamental role in the development of MOFs. In this Concept, the versatility of triethylamine when involved in the synthesis of MOFs is discussed. Four sections are used to elaborate on the role of TEA including: (1) Single crystal synthesis; (2) Size and morphology control; (3) Counterion of MOFs; (4) MOFs composites synthesis. Furfural is an industrial renewable platform chemical, which can be converted to useful furanics such as α-angelica lactone, carboxylic acids such as levulinic acid and valeric acid, or to higher carbon content products via condensation routes for producing drop-in fuel replacements and chemicals with diverse applications. These important conversion processes may be carried out in selective fashions, although they require adequate catalysts. They were successfully carried out using versatile, stable silica-wrapped niobium oxide nanostructured catalysts. For example, α-angelica lactone was converted in an integrated fashion to ethyl levulinate in 90% yield, and the esterification of levulinic and valeric acids gave ethyl levulinate in quantitative yield and ethyl valerate in 90% yield, respectively, at 140 °C. Catalytic, mechanistic and kinetic modelling studies shed light on the influence of the materials properties on the catalytic performances. These catalysts outperformed pure Nb2O5, as well as hydrothermally synthesized composites consisting of Nb2O5 nanoparticles embedded in a mesoporous siliceous matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the influence of electrode material's morphology on electrochemical behavior is of great significance for the development of rechargeable batteries, however, such studies are often limited by the inability to precisely control the morphology of electrode materials. Herein, nanostructured titanium niobium oxides (TiNb2O7) with three different morphologies (one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D)) were synthesized via a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal method. The influence of the morphological dimension of TiNb2O7 as electrode material on the electrochemical performance in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and the underlying correlation with the electrochemical kinetics were studied in detail. 2D TiNb2O7 (TNO-2D) shows a superior rate capability and cycling stability, associated with improved kinetics for charge transfer and Li-ion diffusion, compared to the 1D and 3D materials. Operando X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural stability and crystallographic evolution of TNO-2D upon lithiation and delithiation and correlate the Li-ion diffusion kinetics with the lattice evolution during battery charge and discharge. Moreover, carbon-coated TNO-2D achieves enhanced rate capability (205 mAh·g−1 at 50 C) and long-term cycling stability (87% after 1000 cycles at 5 C). This work provides insights into the rational morphology design of electrode materials for accelerated charge transfer and enhanced fast-charging capability, pushing forward the development of electrode materials for high-power rechargeable batteries in future energy storage. Tungsten disulfide (WS2) layers with different thicknesses were deposited on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to obtain CNT/WS2 core–shell heteronanostructures. WS2 conformally grows like small platelet-flakes on the CNTs initially at low ALD cycles, while, with increasing the number of ALD cycles, WS2 platelets further grow to form a continuous film. The electrical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized CNT/WS2 hierarchical heterostructures were evaluated for sensing and electrocatalysis applications. First, a CNT/WS2 conductometric sensor was developed for gas-sensing monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). CNT/WS2 heteronanostructures were also tested as effective electrochemical probes for detecting riboflavin (vitamin B6) and as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The results of gas sensing and electrochemical tests were discussed and correlated to the morphology and surface coverage of WS2 shell on CNT core. CNT/WS2 with 200–300 ALD cycles demonstrated the best performances because of the optimal catalytic WS2 properties and the formation of CNT/WS2 junctions, allowing the sensitive and selective detection of NO2 gas and riboflavin with a limit of detection (LOD) of 70 ppb and 0.4 μM, respectively, and formate production in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. This study shows that the simple approach of keeping anodic TiO2 nanotubes at 70 °C in ethanol for 1 h results in improved photoelectrochemical water splitting activity due to initiation of crystallization in the material amplified by the light‐induced formation of a Ti3+−Vo states under UV 365 nm illumination. For the first time, the light‐induced Ti3+−Vo states are generated when oxygen is present in the reaction solution and are stable when in contact with air (oxygen) for a long time (two months). We confirmed here that the amorphous or nearly amorphous structure of titania supports the survival of Ti3+ species in contact with oxygen. It is also shown that the ethanol treatment substantially improves the morphology of the titania nanotube arrays, specifically, less surface cracking and surface purification from C‐ and F‐based contamination from the electrolyte used for anodizing. The realization of large‐scale industrial application of alkaline water electrolysis for hydrogen generation is severely hampered by the cost of electricity. Therefore, it is currently necessary to synthesize highly efficient electrocatalysts with excellent stability and low overpotential under an industrial‐level current density. Herein, Ir‐incorporated in partially oxidized Ru aerogel has been designed and synthesized via a simple in situ reduction strategy and subsequent oxidation process. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the optimized Ru98Ir2‐350 electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in an alkaline environment (1 M KOH). Especially, at the large current density of 1000 mA cm−2, the overpotential is as low as 121 mV, far exceeding the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the Ru98Ir2‐350 catalyst also displays excellent stability over 1500 h at 1000 mA cm−2, denoting its industrial applicability. Defect‐engineering is a viable strategy to improve the activity of nanocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), whose slow kinetics still strongly limits the broad market penetration of electrochemical water splitting as a sustainable technology for large‐scale hydrogen production. High‐entropy spinel oxides (HESOs) are in focus due to their great potential as low‐cost OER electrocatalysts. In this work, electrospun HESO nanofibers (NFs), based on (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni), (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Zn) and (Cr,Mn,Fe,Ni,Zn) combinations, with granular architecture and oxygen‐deficient surface are produced by calcination at low temperature (600 or 500 °C), characterized by a combination of benchtop analytical techniques and evaluated as electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline medium. The variation of HESO composition and calcination temperature produces complex and interdependent changes in the morphology of the fibers, crystallinity and inversion degree of the spinel oxide, concentration of the oxygen‐vacancies, cation distribution in the lattice, which mirror on different electrochemical properties of the fibers. The best electrocatalytic performance (overpotential and Tafel slope at 10 mA cm−2: 360 mV and 41 mV dec−1, respectively) pertains to (Cr1/5Mn1/5Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5)3O4 NFs calcined at 500 °C and results from the lower outer 3d‐electron number, eg filling closer to its optimal value and higher occupation of 16d sites by the most redox‐active species. The integration of metal oxide nanomaterials with mesoporous silica is a promising approach to exploiting the advantages of both types of materials. Traditional synthesis methods typically require multiple steps. This work instead presents a fast, one-step, template-free method for the synthesis of metal oxides homogeneously dispersed within mesoporous silica, including oxides of W, Ti, Nb, Ta, Sn, and Mo. These composites have tunable metal oxide contents, large surface areas, and wide mesopores. The combination of Nb2O5 nanoparticles (NPs) with SiO2 results in an increased surface area and a larger number of acid sites compared to pure Nb2O5 NPs. The surface texture and acidity of the silica–niobia composites can be tuned by adjusting the Nb/Si molar ratio. Moreover, the silica provides protection to the niobia NPs, preventing sintering during thermal treatment at 400 °C. The silica–niobia materials exhibit superior performance as catalysts in the aldol condensation of furfural (Fur) with acetone compared to pure niobia, leading to an up to 62% in product yield. Additionally, these catalysts show remarkable stability, retaining their performance over multiple runs. This work demonstrates the potential of the proposed synthesis approach for preparing more sustainable, high-performance, durable, and stable nanoscale metal oxide-based catalysts with a tunable composition, surface area, and active site density. Pumpkin (Cucurbita sp.) represents an unquestionable source of valuable nutrients and bioactive compounds having a broad spectrum of health-promoting effects. The goal of this work was to characterize the byproducts (peels and filaments) of different pumpkin varieties belonging to C. moschata (Butternut, Lunga di Napoli, Moscata di Provenza, and Violina rugosa) and C. maxima (Delica, Delica vanity, Hokkaido, and Mantovana) species in terms of total carotenoid content, antioxidant activity, and carotenoid profiling. The research revealed that peels and filaments were a good source of β-carotene and other non-esterified carotenoids, as well as esterified carotenoids. Considering the growing market demand for safe and healthy food products, pumpkin byproducts, having also an interesting antioxidant bioactivity, could be useful in the development of novel functional products.
