7. Barriers and Facilitators in Inclusive Daycare Facilities: Mothers' Perspectives

Abstract

The purpose of this article is the analysis of barriers and facilitators to enrolling children with disabilities in inclusive daycare facilities. Data were gathered from nine (N = 9) mothers of children with diverse developmental disabilities who were admitted to inclusive daycare centres in Paris, France. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using the Inductive Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke [2006. "Using Thematic Analysis in Psychology." "Qualitative Research in Psychology" 3 (2): 77-101. doi: 10.1191/1478088706qp063oa]). The emerging themes related to barriers were: lack of inclusive practice training, perceived attitudes towards disability, daycare centre's directors' reluctance, and wider challenges on a community level. Facilitators included having a regular contact person, staff training, space adjustment of the daycare facility and adaptive equipment, inclusive daycare centre's project, getting and sharing information. Finally, further implications for practice and research are proposed.

17. Perceived Barriers and Facilitators in Infant-Toddler Day Care Inclusion: The Childcare Professionals' Point of View

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the barriers and facilitators to enrolling a toddler in inclusive day care facilities. Data were gathered from ten (N = 10) childcare providers who work in inclusive day care centres in Paris, France. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed using the thematic analysis (Braun and Clarke in Qual Res Psychol 3(2):77-101, 2006. https://doi.org/10.1191/1478088706qp063oa). The emerging categories related to barriers were the challenges induced by the disability itself, childcare provider's emotional exhaustion and parental and childcare providers' perceptions on disability. Facilitators included space adjustment of the day care facility and adequate equipment, specialized inclusive practices, training programmes, support within the childcare team, skills recognition and sense of competence and, finally, partnerships and cooperation with specialized settings. Further implications for practice and research are discussed.

Abstract

Total or partial replacement of traditional durum wheat semolina (DWS) by alternative flours, such as legumes or wholegrain cereals in pasta improves their nutritional quality and can make them interesting vector for fortification. Climate-smart gluten-free (C-GF) flours, such as legumes (bambara groundnut, chickpea, cowpea, faba bean, and pigeon pea), some cereals (amaranth, teff, millet, and sorghum), and tubers (cassava and orange fleshed sweet potato), are of high interest to face ecological transition and develop sustainable food systems. In this review, an overview and a critical analysis of their nutritional potential for pasta production and processing conditions are undertaken. Special emphasis is given to understanding the influence of formulation and processing on techno-functional and nutritional (starch and protein digestibility) properties. Globally C-GF flours improve pasta protein quantity and quality, fibers, and micronutrients contents while keeping a low glycemic index and increasing protein digestibility. However, their use introduces anti-nutritional factors and could lead to the alteration of their techno-functional properties (higher cooking losses, lower firmness, and variability in color in comparison to classical DWS pasta). Nevertheless, these alternative pasta remain more interesting in terms of nutritional and techno-functional quality than traditional maize and rice-based gluten free pasta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Engaging the Learner's Voice? Catechetics and Oral Involvement in Reform Strategy Lessons

Abstract

This case study is set within the context of a national reform strategy that strongly espouses oral involvement of learners through "catechetic" interactions, i.e. the use of question-and-answer as a means of teaching, and its inverse, the students' use of question-and-answer with their teacher and their peers in order to enhance their learning, and other oral contributions. Fourteen lessons spanning learners aged 4-15 years were observed and analysed with respect to the extent and quality of such interactions. Attention was paid to observing the catechetics of each lesson. The incidence and nature of students' oral contributions and interactions could be described as "the learner's voice" within lessons. Data on these lessons, coupled with data gathered from surrounding structured conversations with teachers and pupils, indicates that the espousal by teachers of some key tenets of the reform strategy is not as yet being significantly enacted in their practice. Also, implicit altered expectations of their role within lessons have not been communicated effectively to most students. 44. Identification of factors associated with sarcopenic obesity development: Literature review and expert panel voting.

Abstract

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is defined as the combination of excess fat mass (obesity) and low skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia). The identification and classification of factors related to SO would favor better prevention and diagnosis. The present article aimed to (i) define a list of factors related with SO based on literature analysis, (ii) identify clinical conditions linked with SO development from literature search and (iii) evaluate their relevance and the potential research gaps by consulting an expert panel. From 4746 articles screened, 240 articles were selected for extraction of the factors associated with SO. Factors were classified according to their frequency in the literature. Clinical conditions were also recorded. Then, they were evaluated by a panel of expert for evaluation of their relevance in SO development. Experts also suggested additional factors. Thirty-nine unique factors were extracted from the papers and additional eleven factors suggested by a panel of experts in the SO field. The frequency in the literature showed insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, lack of exercise training, inflammation and hypertension as the most frequent factors associated with SO whereas experts ranked low spontaneous physical activity, protein and energy intakes, low exercise training and aging as the most important. Although literature and expert panel presented some differences, this first list of associated factors could help to identify patients at risk of SO. Further work is needed to confirm the contribution of factors associated with SO among the population overtime or in randomized controlled trials to demonstrate causality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. The Science Safety Essentials: A Resource for New and Aspiring Science Leaders

Abstract

Running a secondary school science department is one of the most complex and diverse leadership roles that exists in schools, particularly when compared to other middle leadership roles. The workplace health and safety responsibilities, in particular, has some very real legal (and human) consequences when science leaders do not understand their responsibilities. Yet, while school systems put significant resources into leadership training, there is very little in the way of training people to manage such complex legal issues. The Science Safety Essentials is an attempt to fill this gap by creating a set of documents that provides out-of-field science teachers and new science leaders with the essential information that they need in order to do their job in a way that is both safe and informs them of their legal responsibilities. This article provides a brief explanation of the Science Safety Essentials.
