Spacecraft Design, Testing And Performance - Abstract
The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) will add polarization to the properties (time, energy, and position) observed in x-ray astronomy. A NASA Astrophysics Small Explorer (SMEX) in partnership with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), IXPE will measure the 2–8-keV polarization of a few dozen sources during the first 2 years following its 2021 launch. The IXPE Observatory includes three identical x-ray telescopes, each comprising a 4-m-focal-length (grazingincidence) mirror module assembly (MMA) and a polarization-sensitive (imaging) detector unit (DU), separated by a deployable optical bench. The Observatory’s Spacecraft provides typical subsystems (mechanical, structural, thermal, power, electrical, telecommunications, etc.), an attitude determination and control subsystem for 3-axis stabilized pointing, and a command and data handling subsystem communicating with the science instrument and the Spacecraft subsystems.

Astronomy - Abstract
The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) will expand the information space for study of cosmic sources, by adding linear polarization to the properties (time, energy, and position) observed in x-ray astronomy. Selected in 2017 January as a NASA Astrophysics Small Explorer (SMEX) mission, IXPE will be launched into an equatorial orbit in 2021. The IXPE mission will provide scientifically meaningful measurements of the x-ray polarization of a few dozen sources in the 2-8 keV band, including polarization maps of several x-ray-bright extended sources and phase-resolved polarimetry of many bright pulsating x-ray sources.

Scientific payloads onboard CubeSats usually have complex geometries and occasionally narrower allowed temperature ranges with respect to the rest of the spacecraft. In these cases, the capability to correctly predict the thermal behaviour of the payload once in orbit is mandatory. To achieve this ability, a thermal balance test is required to correctly identify the thermal model of the payload. The test consists in the application of different external thermal boundary conditions together with the addition of heat dissipation to simulate the thermal load produced by active electronics during operation. Those experimental data are fundamental to validate the numerical thermal model and make its predictions reliable. This paper presents the configuration and procedures of the thermal balance test performed on the Demonstration Model of the payload to be embarked on each satellite of the HERMES constellation. The test data is compared with the results of a finite volume thermal model of the payload, proving the application of this method to be reliable for space thermal analyses. The obtained test results show the temperature jumps caused by the heat dissipation applied to active components. A weak correlation between the payload interface and internal equipment has been observed, thus proving that the payload is almost decoupled from the Service Module temperature variations. Based on test outcomes, some modifications in the payload design have been implemented, with the aim to lower the operative temperature on critical, temperature-sensitive equipment. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a scientific observatory with the purpose of expand observation space adding polarization property to the X-ray source's currently measured characteristics. The mission selected in the context of NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) is a collaboration between NASA and ASI that will provide to observatory the instrumentation of focal plane. IXPE instrument is composed by three photoelectric polarimeters based on the Gas Pixel Detector (GPD) design, integrated by INFN inside the detector unit (DU) that comprises of the electrical interfaces required to control and communicate with the GPD. The three DUs are interfaced with spacecraft through a detector service unit (DSU) that collect scientific and ancillary data and provides a basically data handling and interfaces to manage the three DUs. AIV has been planned to combine calibration of DUs and Instrument integration and verification activities. Due the tight schedule and the scientific and functional requirements to be verified, in IAPS/INAF have been assembled two equipment's that work in parallel. The flight model of each DU after the environmental tests campaign was calibrated on-ground using the Instrument Calibration Equipment (ICE) and subsequently integrated in the instrument in the AIV-T process on a AIV and Calibration Equipment (ACE), both the facilities managed by Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) that emulate the spacecraft interfaces of power supply, functional and thermal control and scientific data collection. AIV activities test functionalities and nominal/off-nominal orbits activities of IXPE instrument each time a calibrated DU is connected to DSU flight model completing step by step the full instrument. Here we describe the details of instrumentation and procedures adopted to make possible the full integration and test activities compatibly with calibration of IXPE Instrument.

Settore FIS/05 - Astronomia E Astrofisica ,EXTP, LAD, Silicon Drift Detector, X-ray timing - Abstract
The Large Area Detector (LAD) is the high-throughput, spectral-timing instrument onboard the eXTP mission, a flagship mission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China National Space Administration, with a large European participation coordinated by Italy and Spain. The eXTP mission is currently performing its phase B study, with a target launch at the end-2027. The eXTP scientific payload includes four instruments (SFA, PFA, LAD and WFM) offering unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. The LAD instrument is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT mission. It envisages a deployed 3.2 m2 effective area in the 2-30 keV energy range, achieved through the technology of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors - offering a spectral resolution of up to 200 eV FWHM at 6 keV - and of capillary plate collimators - limiting the field of view to about 1 degree. In this paper we will provide an overview of the LAD instrument design, its current status of development and anticipated performance.

GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10-23 for photons in the γ- ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivity. Gamma-Ray Bursts, occurring at cosmological distances, could be used to detect this tiny signature of space-time granularity. This can be obtained by coherently combine a huge number of small instruments distributed in space to act as a single detector of unprecedented effective area. This is the first example of high-energy distributed astronomy: a new concept of modular observatory of huge overall collecting area consisting in a fleet of small satellites in low orbits, with sub-microsecond time resolution and wide energy band (keV-MeV). The enormous number of collected photons will allow to effectively search these energy dependent delays. Moreover, GrailQuest will allow to perform temporal triangulation of impulsive events with arc-second positional accuracies: an extraordinary sensitive X-ray/Gamma all-sky monitor crucial for hunting the elusive electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Waves, that will play a paramount role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. A pathfinder of GrailQuest is already under development through the HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) project: a fleet of six 3U cube-sats to be launched by the end of 2022.
